I have two 300gig sata drives set up in a raid 1 array. I want to add a third sata drive separate from the raid array so i can extract data from it. Any info would be appreciated.

Ok, what i'm trying to do is probably dumber than dirt but here goes. Trying to install an old 6. 4gb western digital (ide) data drive as a 3rd drive in an already configured raid 0 setup. Raid 0 is using 2 160 gb seagates in a new dell dimension 8400. Here's the challenge. Mobo only has a primary ide controller and all pci slots taken up with other cards so can't add something like a promise controller card with a secondary ide channel. Good news is that mobo has 4 sata connectors on board with 0 & 2 allocated to the 160gb drives in the raid arrangement. So, tried to install ide drive connected to sata connector 1 using a sata to ide adapter. Drive is configured as cable select, which if i understand doesn't really have a function if connected via sata. I've also verified that i have the current bios from dell's website and enabled it during setup to look for a drive on sata connector 1 but it fails to find the drive during bootup. The raid bios which launches after the system bios doesn't see the ide drive either. Dell users manual suggests that a 3rd drive can be added to an existing raid 1 configuration but doesn't say anything about adding a data (non-raid configured) drive to a raid 0 configuration. Just wanting to use the ide drive as a data backup drive for critical files. Probably better (and worth the expense based on the time i've spent troubleshooting) to just buy a small sata drive or an external usb drive for the data backup. Anyone got any ideas?

Adding Scsi Drives To Existing Raid 5 System

I'm fairly new to the world of scsi. We currently have a server with 4 scsi drives in it setup in raid 5. My boss wants to add two 300 gb scsi drives to the system, but does not need them to be part of the raid array. Is this possible? I have never deal with scsi before and i do not want to screw this up. If it makes any difference, this is for a dell poweredge 2600 server.

Adding 3rd Hard Drive But Motherboard Supports 2 Sata Channels

I order a replacement seagate 80g hardrive to replace my primary "c" drive that appeared to be on the verge of quitting (bad sounds coming from the hard drive). Well, the drive appears to be working just fine - without the ominous sounds. Now i have an extra hard drive. My mother board supports 2 sata channels and both are full with 80g hard drives. The primary & secondary ide slots are occupied with a cdrom & a dvdrw. Is there a way i can add this extra hard drive to the system?

4 Sata Drive Raid Configuration

Ok i just bought some drives and have played around with the setup and wanted to get some feedback on configuration. I have 4 750gb sata drives all 7200rpm
Samsung spinpoint f1
Wd caviar black
2x wd caviar blue

I had the samsung and the wd black drive in a raid 0 initially and when i got the blue drives i put those in a raid 0 and was just backing up the first raid 0 to the second once a week. Now i've configured them in a raid 5. Is this the best solution for performance. I'm not terribly concerned with redundantcy i just want to be able to have some sort of protection. I was fine with the once a week back of the raid 0.

Moving From Raid 0 To 1tb Sata Ii Single Drive

When i built my current high performance rig last october, i noticed the raid0 performance kinda sucked. The benchmark score on these old 80gig drives are nowhere near up to par with a new sataii drive. So i just ordered a 1tb western digital wd10eads drive. I plan to ghost the the raid0 to this new drive and then remove the raid setup all together. Anyone done something similar recently? The performance advantages now a days with raid0 is questionable. Storage bandwidth with sata ii more than makes up for any performance gain from striping 2 drives. The idea originally was drop frame free video capturing on a pc. But times have changed. Dv capture need sustained 3. 4mb/s throughput. That is a drop in the bucket now! But in the old days it was hard to achieve on a system with out raid0.

Adding Sata Ports - Any Easy Solution ?

I've been mulling this for a day or two now. I can't seem to find exactly what i'm looking for:

4+ ports
Pci-e
No raid necessary
Whs friendly
2tb drive friendly
Modern driver support

The only options i see are the supermicro 8-port pci-x/pci-e cards and some highpoint/adaptec cards that cost more than my cpu, ram, and mobo combined. Is there a reliable solution out there that's faster than pci? And under the $75 mark?

I'm willing to pay for quality, but spending another $50 on sas-to-sata cables is no fun.

Why Is A 2nd Sata Drive Making Both Sata's Unrecognized ?

I just removed my old ide hdd with xp and replaced it with a sata drive and installed vista on it. Everything was fine, until:

I installed a second brand new unformatted sata hdd. With the second drive installed neither of the new drives are recognized and windows won't boot. Is it something obvious i'm missing?

Internal Sata Blu Ray Drive Plugged Into Sata

Alright, i'll make this short and sweet. I want to free one of my sata ports up so i can install another hard drive. My motherboard has a built in esata port on the back. Is it as simple as moving my blu ray sata cable to the esata jack on the back? Aesthetics mean nothing, this computer is hidden.

Use Laptop Hard Drives In Raid 5 Array For Whs System Drive

One thing i don't like about whs is the lack of failure protection for the system drive. If the system drive dies the whs is toast. I have an adaptec 3805 hardware raid card ( 8 x internal sas/sata ), and am considering putting the os on a raid 5 array. Doesn't need to be be particularly big in capacity, but small in physical volume occupied by the drives and low power consumption. To this end i am considering a super-micro 8 2. 5inch drives into 2 5. 25inch bay module, and a set of seagate 7200. 3 laptop hard-drives, probably 4 500gb in a raid 5. The 7200 drives don't use much more power than the 5400 drives. I checked the data sheets. Data is currently on 3. 5inch seagate drives

How crazy is the idea of using laptop hard-drives ( 7200rpm or otherwise ) in a raid array?

The raid array would be transparent to whs as it would be done in hardware.

Scsi Vs. Sata 150 On Raid

I was looking for hard drives on the next computer i am building and was wondering which is better: a single scsi or two sata 150 hdd on raid. I'm looking at anything about 80 gb up to 200 gb and mostly for performance drives versus storage. The motherboard in the system will be a msi k8n neo 4 platinum and the cpu will be a 3700+.

925xcv Sata Raid Questions

First how does this work? Not raid but installing. I mean do i install windows first to install the drivers for raid? Ideally i want this to be a gaming system and would like drive c raided. (So two indentical hardrives). Anyone done this before? Secondly how much will raid help the performance of a system? It is worth it to spring for the 10, 000 rpm drivers? A bigger cache? Or both? Ideally i will also have an additonal storage drive for the insurmountable amount of pictures my wife takes. Also if you happen to know as a fact with this mb if it would be possible to run the c drive raided, the d drive as a storage drive and the e drive as a dvd burner.

Hardware Sata Raid Card

Trying to find an inexpensive hardware based raid card for an esxi install. I have 2 sets of raid 1 arrays. Raid1 2x 75gb raptors (boot drives) and raid1 2x 1tb (vm drives). Preferably i'd like to get a raid card that can do 2 raid 1's and is hardware based but i could live with a card that just did raid 1 hardware based for a single array. Has to be esxi compatible and preferably inexpensive. Any suggestions or recommendations on cards? I've been looking at the 3ware cards but its so hard to tell which are software and which are fully hardware based.

Raid 6 Sata Hardware Card

I need recommendations for a new pcie raid card for a high use home server. I plan to put 5 1tb wd black drives on it. The server will be running 3 virtual machines (i plan to try to use esxi as the vm base) so the card needs to support full ncq and be able to handle the occasional heavy load.

Sata Hard Drives For Raid On A Perc 6/i

I've been working on a server build for awhile and decided that the poweredge t610 that i've configured on dell's site should fit the bill, and then some. I'll be loading windows 2003 standard onto it. I have some questions and would appreciate any input. Please see the attached image for details of this build. The server will be used primarily as a file server. My questions mainly involve hard drives. 1. I was thinking i'd just make a simple mirror for the system drive out of the two sata drives included in the attached build. Should i use the onboard raid for this, or should i use two ports on the perc. 2. I'd like to create a 1tb (or larger) raid 5 or 6 array using the perc to serve network folders. What sata drives should i purchase for this purpose?

3. I'd like to have a nightly backup to one of eight 500gb sata drives that i already own. 7 are maxtor quickview 500 (model: 3h500f0) and 1 (warranty replacement for a dead maxtor) is a seagate barracuda es (p/n: 9bl146-303). Can the nightly backup go onto one of these and can it be hot swappable? Would i need to use a port on the perc or could it be onboard? Do i need to buy special "drawer" attachments for each of these drives so they can slide in and out easily?

Mixing Ide / Sata Raid Drives

At the moment i have two 120 gig hard drives installed and working, and wish to expand my storage capacity. My motherboard has two raid connections as well as the above, can anybody advise if it is possible to run two raid drives in addition to my two ide drives.

Usb To Sata Adapters For Storage Rather Than Buy Sata Cards

I've read here where people need to buy raid cards or pci, sata cards to add more hard drives to their system. Well i am in the same boat, i have 2, 30g vertex in raid, 3, 1. 5tb samsung, and 1 sata dvd drive. All my sata ports are full and a sata card costs. Idk more than 50 bucks i guess. Why can't we just use usb to sata adapters? The speed is relatively the same, at least for just xfer of files and streaming. It can be put internally, and it's cheap. Usb to sata adapter kits usually consist of the usb to sata adapter cable and a separate power-brick for sata to outlet. You can buy just the usb to sata adapter for 1$ from overseas with free shipping. Mount some usb headers internally to plug a few of these cables and run the sata power from your regular power-supply, it can handle.

So whats the thought behind this? It can be relatively hidden(i like clean cases and you can hide most anything) is a cheap solution to an expanding computer case (can't usb do like 126 devices?) And speeds are pretty good. Again this is for internal installation, you would use your power-supply for power, and 1$ per hard drive for the usb to sata adapter. I have a spare 750 and 2x 500 segates lying around and a lian li v2000 (abs clone) i got the space, just don't have the connections! Thoughts?

Intel Ich8r / Ich9r / Ich10r / Do / Pch Sata Raid Controller

I have an hp pavilion p6110f. In device manager i find the controller under storage controllers. Support for hp says there is not raid or controller on this pc. So i am not sure what this is. Is it a raid controller and what can i do with it. I would like to experiment with raid 0 and 1 but can't find any info on how to use it.

Can't Boot From Sata Cdrom And Can't Find Sata Hd

Last night i built my dad a new computer, with two sata dvd-drives (but can only connect one with one of my sata cables. Apparently the motherboard manufacturer only likes to include one sata cable. My fault for ordering oem and not checking on the cable quantity. ), A wd sata hard drive and an ecs nforce 570 slit-a motherboard. Anyway, when i boot up with the windows xp cd in the dvd drive, it won't detect the drive and boot from the cd. Ok, i thought i might have that problem (never dealt with sata drives besides hd's), so i just plugged in an ide cdrom, but now it won't find the hd.

I've put raid drivers from ecs on a disk as well as wd sata drives on a disk and hit f6 when prompted in the winxp boot screen. The ecs drivers did nothing for me and the wd drivers said something about it being corrupt or something of the sort (sorry, can't remember exactly. So i've had no luck. I've also tried plugging in the original ide hd from his old computer but it immediately restarts when it should start loading windows. I had to go to sleep because i have work today, so i didn't fiddle around with it too much more than what i've explained above, and that's where i am now so i won't get to try anything for awhile.

6 Drives For A Raid Array

I have been out of the hd loop lately, doing a new server for work, and yes sas is out of the question due to cost, i was able to get a nice raid card, arc-1680ix-16. So with that i need some good sata drives to go with it in the 500g or larger range. For now i have 6 segate 500g es2 drives that will be temporarily used, but will go to another older server once i move things over, so i need some replacement drives. I know wd has "raid" edition drives and such, and i have heard here and there of certain drives wont play nice in raid and so on, so i want to get some recommendations from people who have used 6 or more drives in raid 50, 60 or 10 and had no issues.

2tb Drives For A Raid Array

I'm running a 5 x 750 gb array of seagates right now on a dell perc 5i, but am running out of space. I told myself that i would upgrade when 2 tb drives really started dropping in price, and at the $140 level that we're seeing with holiday sales i'm ready to bite. However, it seems that people are complaining about each kind of drive out there. Wd - problems with raid

Seagate - questions coming from the 1. 5 tb series and potentially problems with raid
Hitachi - deathstar (i owned two of those, wow, what a pain), but i wouldn't hold that against the company now

So what is actually the safest bet? 5900 vs. 7200 rpm doesn't matter to me because i only need to be able to max out gb ethernet; in fact, the 5900 rpm drives running cooler would be a good thing. Many people seem to complain about a brand because of reputation, so if i could get opinions from actual owners that would be preferable. Actually, i suppose the real reason i am making this thread is to weed out opinions from what people are actually seeing.

I've recently noticed than when i start up windows it shows 250g sata i, but my hardrive is sata ii and should be connecting as it, now i'm 100% positive my hardrive is sata ii. So does anyone know why this could be happening?

Delayed Write Errors On Server 2003 Raid 5ee Array

One of our file servers consists of 10 hard drives on a raid 5ee array. Recently, we began getting delayed write errors:

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file xxx. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. "

I've talked to adaptec and sent them diagnostic information from the raid card and they said the card is in perfect working order, and the hard drives appear to be as well. I hooked the server up to a different port on the switch, used a different cable, and switched to the 2nd nic on it as well. I'm still getting these errors, and we've lost several documents. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I'm almost at the point where i want to just format the entire thing and start over.

Sata 150 Vs. Sata 2

I'm building my new computer, and i was wondering. Western digital makes a 10, 000rpm sata 150 hard drive. Although this is a super fast drive speed, i'm not sure the transfer rates can back it up. Would running 2 sata 150 10, 000rpm drives in raid 0 be faster than 2 sata ii 7, 200rpm.

1. Can you plug/unplug sata devices without problems like usb devices?

2. If i get a sata controller card can i also go ahead and add what sata devices i want to add before booting up, or do i need to install it then turn off the computer and then plug them in?

Sata Cd / Dvd Drive

So i have been surfing around the web trying to find a cd/dvd drive that has tabs on the tray so a disc could stay in place when being loaded vertically or at a angle. If some one could direct me to a company still putting tabs on their trays that would be a huge help to me.

Sata Drive Trouble

I got a diamond maxtor 10 sata drive 250g with 16mb cache. Hooked it up to my msi ms7093 board with no issues and installed xp without a hitch. After that ran some stuff evrything seemed ok. Now i zeroed the drive in prep for copying my partitons from my old seagate drive, after zeroing it it no longers except partitioning or formatting very well. I ran the utlities disc from maxtors website and it spat out a drive error code and then states the drive is in imminent failure save your files while you can type scenerio. This is a refurb so should i rma it or try some other sofware like partition magic to fix it.

Secondary Sata Drive

I am putting in a second hard drive in my pc. A wester digital 40 gb, sata. It was from another pc, so i wiped it (wipedrive pro) and i have it plugged in on my pc. If i open windows explorer i don't see the drive, but if i go into computer management and click on disk management i can see the disk. What do i need to do to get this new hd visible so i can use it?
