Hard Drive Problem Caused By Electricity Failure

My hard drive partition was in the middle of being resized, when the electricity went out. Needless to say, i could not log back on to the windows installation on that hard drive. I logged on to another windows installation on another hard drive to try to access the data on the corrupted hard drive. The drive gets detected, but i can't access the data, with a prompt requiring the drive to be formatted. The hard drive is physically intact btw. Now the question is. Will i be able to access the data if i purchase an external hdd enclosure? Or just a sata to usb adapter? I really need to access this hard drive with 320gb of valuable data.

Failure To Boot From Hard Drive

I have two hard drives. I tried installing windows vista business on the first one to use in a dual-boot configuration with windows xp which was on the second hard drive. Well, the vista installation worked fine, but when i went to boot into xp, i found vista's boot loader hadn't recognized windows xp. Clearly frustrated, i tried several different things until i finally decided to format the first hard drive. It was horrible i lost my entire data from the hard drive. Vista made my data vanish. I hate it. I tried using repair tool and many recovery software, but it did not work.

Hard Drive Failure When Booting

I have been having trouble with my desktop when i boot up. I am getting a "hard drive failure" when i boot and it asks for me to insert a system disk (which i can't find at the moment). So far i have been lucky enough that after a few tries it will finally boot up and run just fine. I try not to shut it down but from time to time i forget and shut it down only to be reminded why i shouldn't do that the next time i try to boot it up. But, i am afraid that it will someday no longer do this. I have purchased an external hard drive so i can copy the contents of the bad drive to it before i replace the drive, but am not sure what to do or how to do it. I would apprieciate any help you can give me. I have seen in another post on this site a program mentioned by the name of hdclone. I have found a free version of this and am interested in knowing if this is something i need to transfer the contents of the old drive to the external one? Also, the old drive is an ide but when i look online for a new drive they are sata or pata drives. What are they and will they work with my current setup?

If i recall correctly, the external hdd is about 120gb and the old hdd is 60gb. I am running windows xp pro. Since i am unable to locate my xp program disk at the moment i want to do everything possible to not lose this on the hard drive. If you need any further information, i will do my best to supply it.

Hard Drive With Potential Failure

I have 2 of the seagate 1. 5 tb models which i bought before i was informed of the failure rate and i figured that it would be wise to ask here if i should be alarmed because if i dont check now i never will. Basically my problem is that the drive tends to "stall" after a period of idle time. It is usually only an issue in windows but it happens too often now. For instance, i go to my computer in the morning and click on the folder on the drive (which is the secondary non os drive for storage) and it will stall and about 3 seconds later there is a small click sound as is if it were trying to find its place. It is very annoying so i really want to resolve it. The thing is other seagate drives that i have had have done the same thing to me without failure for years, and instead just leaves me annoyed. I for one am pretty mad about the epidemic with these drives but if anyone has suggestions i am open to them.

How To Prepare For Hard Drive Failure On Laptop ?

I am about to order a new laptop, i have an option between 2 120gb (7200rpm) hard drives, or 1 250gb (5400rpm) hard drive. Right now i'm planning to go for the single hard drive. One thing that i am concerned about before hitting the final buy button, is hard drive failure. I've replaced my desktop hard drives (2 of them) on a few occasions (i go ahead and change em when i think their making noise). I usually just plug in the hard drive i want to swap out, and the new one i buy, then run a program that boots off a cd to clone the hard drive. With a laptop, i don't know how simple this might be. I'm thinking if i buy just a single hard drive, there won't be a 2nd sata cable for me to clone the hard drive with. And even if there is a 2nd cable, i don't know if i can run my laptop while the hard drives are out etc. (Assuming i purchase the single hard drive, perhaps there isn't physical room to put in a temporary 2nd hard drive)

I'm not really wanting to purchase the dual hard drive option for the laptop because its just extra money wasted, and higher battery consumption as i see it. Being mostly a desktop user and only a very rare occasions opening up the bottom panels of a laptop, i'm not sure what to expect. I just dont want to get stuck in a situation where i have to buy a replacement hard drive and lose everything and do a base install etc.

Hard Drive Failure - Unknown Error

When vista loads, it gives me a message telling me one of my hard drives need to be checked for consistency. If i let it run, it either freezes, or aborts with some kind of unknown error at some point (happens at different points in the process, randomly). When i finish booting into vista, the hard drive is there, but it needs to be formatted before it can be used. If i keep letting chkdsk run is there a chance it may be able to repair whatever the issue is? It seems to get progressively further, but how far away from completing chkdsk it is, i have no idea. Edit: actually, i'm going download wd lifeguard tools, and see if i can scan the drive first, and see what it tell me. Will update when done.

Hang On Post Caused By Drive

I have a foxconn 945gz7mc ks2h board and two sata drives attached (1x320gb samsung, 1x 1tb seagate). I've thrown freenas on there and all was going well; until i setup my 1tb drive. I formatted it to the ufs filesystem from within freenas. I managed to move files over and play with it for a little bit. Ever since then; no matter what i do the system will not get past post if that drive is connected. I've tried taking the drive out, put it in another machine; it works fine - i even restored it back to an ntfs drive and it still hung at post on the other board. I'm at a loss - does anyone have any ideas?

Broken Drive Caused By Data Recovery Software

I accidentally formatted a drive recently and used file scavenger to get the data back, copying everything it found onto another drive plugged into a dock. After rebooting or hotplugging the drive back into the dock it makes my computer freeze up. On reboots windows xp just hangs after the splash screen. I'm assuming i copied boot sector files or something on to the drive that i shouldn't have. Everything is accessible on the drive when i plug it into my laptop running os x, but as soon as any windows install sees the disc it either freezes up or bluescreens. Is there any way to delete the offending files and fix the disc? The only system files i see in os x is a folder "system volume information", none of the $ type files i saw when first scanning with file scavenger.

Hard Disk Failure - Device Scsi Ultra1

I've inherited an older windows 2000 server. It acts as a co-location box. Recently, i've been unable to access it until it is rebooted. Today, i checked out the event logs and saw it filled with error messages. Some of them said: "the device, devicescsiultra1, did not respond within the timeout period. " And others said: "dmio: disk harddisk5 block 562598323 (mountpoint m: uncorrectable write error" many of these two occured in the last two days. Another message i received a little while ago said:
"The device, devicescsipnp6801, did not respond within the timeout period. "

Can anyone tell me what it looks like the problem is, or could be? I'm thinking that a hard drive has gone bad (or is going bad).

Drive Failure In Raid 5, Now Corrupt C: Drive

I had a hard drive die in my raid 5 configuration. I replaced the drive and rebuilt it. Now when i click on the c: drive it says: "the file or directory c: is corrupt and unreadable, please run chkdsk"

From what i am reading, chkdsk is not raid aware which probably won't help with my situation. Can anyone recommend any tools available (paid or otherwise) to try and fix this error?

Usb Flash Drive Failure

Three times-once each with three different flash drives, and on six different pcs-i've had the experience of finding that the computer won't recognize the drive, and the data on the drive has become inaccessible. I see this is a common problem. Other users ask for advice on the web, and nobody seems able to offer any solid information on this occurrence. In none of my incidents has the flash drive been dropped, heated, frozen, or dropped into a liquid or run through a strong magnetic field. One day they work; next day they don't. Anybody know why or what could be causing this issue? And whether my data is permanently lost in such cases? Three times, three different flash drives can't be a coincidence!

Floppy Drive Disk Boot Failure

Just built my own computer, and i cant install an os because the computer doesnt seem to find the floppy drive. I have connected the floppy drive to the motherboard with a 34-pin connecter, and i have the twisted end plugged to the floppy drive, and the long end to the mb. I noticed that one pin on the floppy drive (the second from the side) is missing.could that be the problem or should it be like that?

When i start the computer it says after counting the memory and all that, "verifying dmi pool data. Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter".

Static Electricity - Computer

I am just curious on what static electricity precautions that i should be taking when building a pc. I think i am doing it right, but not sure. I just got a wrist strap, but before i had one i used to just leave the computer plugged into the wall socket and have the switch turned off on both the psu and the wall socket while touching a metal part of the case to discharge static electricity. Was that correct doing it that way?

If that was the correct way of doing it now that i have a wrist strap i was wondering if i do it the same way? Do i keep the computer plugged into the wall socket and turned off at both the psu and wall socket while using the wrist strap?

Raid Drive Failure, Can't Get Backup Image To Work

Having trouble getting my backup cloned drive to work. I initially had a raid setup: two wd 250gig sata in raid 0, one drive started to go nuts, i luckily was able to make a backup image to a single wd 640gig sata. The raid was from the motherboard controller epox ep-8k9a7i. I unplugged the two 250gig drives then proceeded to plug in the single 640gig, the mobo controller recognizes the drive, but it wont boot into windows. I then did a successful boot sector rebuild in the xp recovery console on the 640gig drive, still no go. I used driveimage xml from the raid0 windows install for the clone process to the 640gig, would this be causing a bad clone? What programs might others suggest i use? Am i missing something? Could use a few more ideas to get this backup drive to boot!

Razer Lycosa Keyboard Caused Computer Not To Boot

I found out what was causing my computer to not boot. It was the razer lycosa keyboard of all things. When i plugged in the two usb cables for the keyboard and tried to boot the computer all the lights inside the case began to flash (the psu fan would not even kick on). When i removed the keyboard everything started up just fine and all the lights stopped blinking. I tested the keyboard out on another computer just to make sure it was not the motherboard and what do you know it caused all the lights inside the second test computer to blink the same way. I think its time to switch back to a microsoft keyboard. Overall, i think the packaging for the lycosa is subpar. The top of the keyboard is only protected by very thin cardboard and the top cover on the box looks like it is about to bust open just sitting on the store shelf. This type of packaging allows a substantial amount of shock to be transfered to the keyboard. Defective packaging is the same thing as defective hardware. I initially liked the look and feel of the lycosa but i am not going to run the risk of getting another damaged or defective keyboard my time means too much to me.

Input Stutter Caused By Monitor Usb Hub

I've been playing crysis warhead and left4dead. I have a dell 24" with built-in card reader and usb hub. I hooked the monitor usb to system usb so that i could just plugin my keyboard and mouse into it instead of the system underneath my desk. I have an apple keyboard and a razer deathadder mouse. While playing crysis, everything is fine, smooth as butter, no problems. But, in left4dead, i started noticing that my input (kb/mouse) would start to lag/stutter after playing for about 15-20 mins. Nothing else would stutter, fps never dipped, game itself never lagged. I would just get input lag/stutter for about a second. Then it would return to normal (if i moved the mouse during the stutter, the crosshair would jump to where it was supposed to be). I initially thought it may be overheating, or perhaps an unstable overclock, but it made no sense as crysis was working just fine. Then i thought it may have been a bad hdd, but i ran several test and everything was fine. I came to the conclusion that it could be the monitor's usb hub. So, i plugged the kb/mouse directly into the system, and now everything appears to be fine. No lag, no stutter. The weirdest thing about this is that the latest time that it happened, my audio also started to lag and stutter, and eventually the game crapped out. All is well now, but why would this happen as a result of a usb hub, and why in only one game? I don't understand. Anyone care to shed some light?

Flashing Bios To Install Windows 7 Caused Blue Screen Error

I was having problems installing windows 7(currently running xp). My friend suggested flashing my bios. I did has he said. Now i'm getting blue screens. He said it could be the ram voltage so i played around with it. No luck. To make sure it was the ram causing the issue, i did an orthos stress test. 4 seconds after starting it. Error. I left my comp off overnight and it worked for about half an hour this morning without a blue screen. Anyone know what i should do to fix this? My system specs should be up to date on my profile if you need any of those.

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Intermittent Boot Failure

The problem is intermittently the system powers up but fails to even attempt to boot - no bios beeps, and bios and vid. Bios screens not displayed. Drives spin up ok. Have tried different case and psu (in fact system is currently in borrowed case). The system only ever fails to boot if the system is cold-started - the system warm-reboots ok. Tried different ram, had m/b replaced once, new m/b been returned to dealer where they (supposedly) found no problems when tested with other kit and with my psu, but system not been professionaly tested as a whole. Have also tried different graphics card, removing modem and sound card, running system from hdd only, but still having problems. All connectors are firmly seated. There are no config options in bios or jumpers for ram and the cpu is set up correctly and automatically. Have used 375 and 300w psus with system (300w seemed better then system started playing up again)
Nvidia geforce4 mx440 agp8x graphics card (8x is supported by m/b), and have also tried geforce2 4x. The os may be irrelevant, but i've tried winxppro, win2000, winnt4, mandrake linux 9 and a linux distro that boots from cd (knoppix). All drivers installed ok. Won't even bother with win9x/me because i hate it.
