St31000528as Only Two Platter 1tb Drive

I'm kinda new on evaluating hard drives when purchasing them and recently discovered the advantage of looking more than size when deciding between hard drives. After owning a wd6400aaks i want to constrain myself to "two platter" drives for the reliability and cool operation advantage. Not counting that higher density platter means more performance. Then i was surprised when looking for 1tb, two platter, 7200rpm drive and only found the seagate st31000528as (7200. 12). Is it the only one?

I think i will wait for the spinpoint f3 recently announced by samsung to make my purchase decision in this "category", but i would love to have a choice by western digital. Even if wd only have 640 gb when counting only two platter drives. I would love to see a performance comparison between one wd6400xxxx and a st31000528as. Does anybody have a link comparing this two drives side by side?

From more than 10 reviews that i have check, none have compared this "two platter" drives in the same review.

Some Hard Drive Platter And Brands Questions

How do you check if your hdd is running at the full 3. 0 speed?

How do you check which hdd has more platters vs the other ones. Ive been hearing that certain wd blue hdd are better than my black one. Ive also been hearing alot of good things about the samsung drives. Ahh so many new things well im thinking of buying another hdd to just have faster loading times for cheap. Btw why does having more platters = better?

Hard Drive 500gb Recommendation

I'm building a new system and need some advice on the hard drive decision. Planning on a wd black 640gb, wanting to know about experiences with them. Also may pick up a seagate hard drive 500gb on the cheap. I've heard that seagate is crap though. What's the word on that?

1 X 300gb 10k Drive Or 1tb (raid 0 - 2 X 500gb) Drives?

I'm about to purchase a new gaming rig and am debating between a 300gb 10k drive or go with a 1tb raid 0 (2 x 500gb) setup? I'm currently using a raid 0 configuration, but wasn't sure how well a 300gb 10k drive performs for gaming. If i go with the 300gb drive, i'm going to use my current two 640gb as storage. I guess i would use them for storage with a new raid 0 too. Any thoughts?

Toshiba 3.5" External Hard Drive 500gb Problem

Any idea why the hard drive connection causes power to cut off (toshiba 3. 5" external hard drive 500gb)? Long story short - external hard drive power doesn't work when drive is connected (i.e. Inside the casing) to circuit board (not a techie person but think it's the sata connection). The casing itself functions without the drive connected (i.e. Just as a shell) but as soon as i connect the drive internally, the power shuts off. Have tried a different shell and same happens. Have bought new version of same drive in desperation but don't want to take new drive apart if it will cause the same problem. Is this some kind of manufacturer thing to stop you disassembling the drive? The drive is a western digital caviar green.

Single Ssd Drive To Raid 0

I got an extra 60gb vertex ssd for christmas. I am wanting to put them in raid 0 configuration. The issue is i already have a 60gb vertex ssd as my main os drive. Is there an easy way to migrate from a single ssd to raid 0 configuration without having to do a complete reinstall?

Fastest Single Hard Drive

I have a 1tb caviar black, and i'm happy with the speed, but (believe it or not) i'm running out of space between os and storage of stuff. So i'd like to get another hard drive to run just my os with programs and keep this one for storage. Whats the fastest 7200rpm drive out there? (Raptors are too expensive, and ssd's are waay too expensive).

Single Bad Block On Hard Drive

Single bad block on hard drive, my wd 1tb 32mb hard drive has a single bad block on it, at least according to hd tune. The drive is 7 months old, and is my main and only hard drive with vista installed on it. Did disc check, and it still shows up in hd tune.considering this, is one bad block extremely bad? Bad enough to send in the hard drive for a replacement? Or is it something common that most hard drives have and not much of an issue?

I'd really hate to have to reinstall all my stuff and vista. It isn't like ram or a video card which you can pop in and be set with a replacement in a hour. But if this just means the drive will flat out die in a few months, then i'll replace it. Of course, i have backed up most of my important data onto dvds. What do you all recommend?

Moving From Raid 0 To 1tb Sata Ii Single Drive

When i built my current high performance rig last october, i noticed the raid0 performance kinda sucked. The benchmark score on these old 80gig drives are nowhere near up to par with a new sataii drive. So i just ordered a 1tb western digital wd10eads drive. I plan to ghost the the raid0 to this new drive and then remove the raid setup all together. Anyone done something similar recently? The performance advantages now a days with raid0 is questionable. Storage bandwidth with sata ii more than makes up for any performance gain from striping 2 drives. The idea originally was drop frame free video capturing on a pc. But times have changed. Dv capture need sustained 3. 4mb/s throughput. That is a drop in the bucket now! But in the old days it was hard to achieve on a system with out raid0.

Wd 500gb Sata Drives / Formatting Issue

So story goes i have 4 almost identical western digital wd5000aaks drives here, 500gb, 16mb buffer. I had put them in my fileserver as a raid-0 stripe of 2. 0tb and everything was swell. In windows home server i was able to use it as if it were a 2tb (more like 1. 8tb) hard drive and removing it from the data pool and quickly backing up files due to the striping. I have never had a problem with the drives, i even have more than just these 4 but they are in other computers, i really like these drives they love raid. I was able to remove the disk from the drive pool completely and remove the disks, good. Now the confusion. See before i took the hard drives out i went to the rocketraid's bios and deleted the array, right? Then when the computer restarted i took a hdd out and put it in another computer, nothing. Doesn't even spin with power. Try it in the internal sata ports, sata card, usb, everything, no show. Not showing in disk manager or the like, not spinning up, no my computer, etc. So i put the drive back in the server, shows up perfectly in the rocketraid bios shows up in windows, it's basically back at home i can do whatever i want with it. Go into disk manager, delete the partition, create a new ntfs partition, and it shows up in my computer. I take the drive and put it in the next computer it won't show up anywhere. This one particular drive when i connected it, it showed ~465gb unformatted space in disk manager. I format it and now a strange thing happens: it has 4 partitions now instead of the 1 i asked for. It's like [100gb unformatted][43gb unformatted][802gb drive _][50gb drive f] what the ***! The drive f even shows up in my computer. The 802gb one is nowhere to be seen but the disk manager. I have no idea where it grabbed these figures (remember this is still in the same server the raid0 was created. I go into the rocketraid bios and it's just a plain jane legacy 500gb disk, although i did try creating a 'single disk' jbod on the drive and then removed it because it didn't help. That's just one of the drives so far all 4 of them are doing the same thing. I just put one in a dell optiplex gx270 and nothing in the bios (do i need to jumper to 1. 5gb/s?), Tried it on a sata -> usb adapter and get the same issues, shows up in device manager as a random hdd w/o a name, appears as though it can be safely 'removed' from windows but it gives you an error. Will show up fine in the server any day of the week. Any light on the topic?

My Book Pro 500gb Dead After Failed Firmware Upgrade

My my book pro 500gb was acting up earlier today. Not showing up in explorer/showing as unformatted. Chkdsk detected, and tried to fix errors it found, but then the process died due to "unknown errors" or the likes. I ran active@ partition recovery, and it showed the file system as intact, but detected bad sectors at the very end of the disk. Windows disk management showed the disk as not having a file system, just as a blank 500gb disk. So, i downloaded the firmware upgrade utility from the manufacturers homepage, and gave it a go (yes, i guess this was pretty stupid). Anyhow, the firmware upgrade seemed to be working, but then it failed in mid-upgrade (i think it was during the "erasing flash" procedure. Now the drive is dead. It does not spin up when plugged in as it used to. When using the firewire to connect it, the computer does not respond at all. When using the usb 2. 0 to connect the drive, it tries to install as an "blank oxford usb device". In my program files folder, i have a new dir, "oxford semiconductorfirmware upgrade", so i guess the my book uses it to upgrade the firmware. I would be eternally grateful if any of you gurus would help me get the drive back online! Been traveling europe for a month, got home yesterday, and all the pictures are on that drive. + Thousands of other photos, which may or may not be backed up!

Single Beep On One Boot

Alright. I was playing around in the bios and i selected a fsb setting of 166 and rebooted. Blank screen, no boot. Nothing. So, as in previous instances of this i cleared the cmos by the jumper on my soltek sl-75frn2 and held the insert key as i powered on. Nothing. No go. The cd-rom reads, but doesn't do anything else. The hdd light comes on for about 20 seconds and disapears. I heard a single beep on one boot, that is all. I have unseated the memory and videocard independently to see if i would get a beep but there were no such instances.

4 Monitors On A Single 5870

I'm looking to eyefinity 4 monitors (3 would be 1 group and extended on the fourth). My monitors don't have display ports, and so from what i read i would have to buy active adapters for the last two monitors. If i just buy another 5870 would i be able to use the dvi on the second card?

It seems it would be better to go ahead and get another card instead of spending 200$ on adapters. Is there something i'm missing or is this the only way?

How To Tell If Ram Is Single Sided ?

My problem is i got a new epox mobo with my new athlon 64. The mobo is on the nforce chipset which i can only have one double sided stick of ram and the other stick has to be single sided. Or to get 3 gigs on there they all have to be single sided. I just ordered a geil ultra series value 1 gig stick pc-3200, cas lat is 3 8-4-4. So my question is i'm lookin for a single sided stick 1 gig pc 3200 to go with it (not sure if the geil is single sided i sent ten million emails to companies that make decent ram don't get replies half the time or they say yeah we have some single sided ram but they never give me the model no. Or anything even when i mail them back. ) So is there anyway to tell if its single sided on the net? Or can anyone recommend a single sided 1 gig stick of pc 3200?

Pci Single Board Computer

Does anyone know of any single board computers that can be used in pc pci or pci-x slot and either run its own instance of windows or linux or function as an added cpu in addition to the motherboard cpu?

I know most of these things are meant for specialized pci backplanes for industrial computers. I'm looking for something along the lines of the old sunpci cards. There were similar products for macs way back, starting with the 68k radius rockets and followed by amd and pentium boards that went in ppc systems. I'm looking for something p3 or newer just to play around with. And not looking for something that is going to require specialized programming to use.

A Single 5870 Enough For A 30 Inch Monitor ?

About to order my new rig to coincide with the release of windows 7, i got most of what i want in there already figured out:

Phenom ii x4 965 (the 955 is only 20 bucks cheaper)
Msi 790fx-gd70
4 gb ocz black edition 8-8-8-24 1600
2 640gb wd caviar black in raid 0
Sapphire radeon hd 5870
Lian li x1000
Corsair tx850w
Samsun 305t 30 inch monitor @ 2560x1600
Prolimatech megahalems

I plan on playing games at max settings crysis/crysis warhead included. I am worried that at that resolution 1 5870 will not cut it and i am already over my budget by a solid 300$ to afford the second graphic card would have to wait for the end of next november probably. If i wait till november i might as well see what the new nvidia cards look like and just buy this thing post xmas (might get a better deal!). So the way i see it i can do one of two things, buy it now or buy an xbox 360 to tide me over till january and buy the best computer i can afford then! I refuse to pay 3300$ for a computer and not bbe blown away by the performance!

Dual Xeon Vs Single Amd

I currently have a computer with an amd 2500 xp processor at 2ghz. I have the opportunity to buy 2 xeon processors with 512 kb caches, running 2. 2ghz. From a gaming aspect, is this a good idea? The amd runs fairly well, but i've noticed my bottleneck is most definitely my processor *1 gb ram and a e-vga 6600vid card*. I can get this xeons for fairly cheap, but i'm wondering whether i am better off saving up for an amd 3400 or something like that. Also, since i currently have an agp motherboard, i take it i would have to upgrade to an pci mobo at least, correct?

Is Having A Single Core Processor A Problem?

I asked a question a few days ago if getting this toshiba satellite laptop is good. I also posted this other toshiba t235d-s1345rd laptop i was thinking about. (I will post links in the details as y!A! Fails as doesn't post my original questions with the links)

The only person who answered said the first laptop is bad as it is a single core processor and it'd be real hard for me to use it. They said most programs need dual-core processors to run. And, the 2nd choice while having a dual core, it is an amd, which will degrade. = Bad. They gave alot of good information, but i don't want to automatically discount either laptop because of only 1 person. Especially because the prices are very good and it seems to have good features. Btw they mentioned i should get this hp laptop instead. I think i can assume a single- core processor= runs slower than dual core. But for the first laptop (and the second actually) there are loads of good reviews, saying it's absolutely great! I don't know what to think.

Raid-0 Current Drives Or Faster Single ?

Been a long time since i've added new hardware to my machine (long for me anyway). Have been getting my modding fix with the car for the past year or so. Anyway, i am looking on upgrading the hd portion of the computer. Current drives are listed in sig, consisting of two wd 320gb (single platter) drives and a wd 500gb. I am debating on either putting the two current wd320gb drives in a raid-0 config, which i prefer, assuming they will be the fastest option. The other choice would be to go with something like a larger single drive such as a samsung f3. For the two drives in raid-0, i am in need of a good cheap hardware controller, which is a piece of hardware i really don't have much knowledge about. So i am stuck at either finding a cheap hardware controller or if the cost it to great then jumping to a single larger drive. What are your thoughts/opinions? Can anyone recommend a controller making these two drives worth staying with?

Single Ssd With Raid 0 Spinning Drives

I a question concerning a raid (stripe) partition. I have 3 drives in my system. A ssd 30gb vertex (that windows 7 is on). A 640 wd blue and a 1tb wd black

What im wanting to do is create a raid array out of those 2 spinning disks just for data storage. Likely 3 partitons, which would be a total of little over 1100gb. After i install win7 on the ssd. I was thinking maybe like 35gb partition for the docs/temp/page file (i moved all temp, and pagefile off the ssd). 400gb partition for games
And remaining 700 and something for videos/music

If i create this all based on the 640gb drive, that should leave 300ish gb unallocated on the 1tb drive. Will i be able to use that unallocated space for acronis secure zone back up area, even though it will not be a raid, or will i just loose all that space all together. I was going to use the intel matrix storage also if that matters.
