Do i have to reformat the harddrive or can i just connect it and it will load all the new hardware normally along with xp. I do know for sure i have to probably uninstall my old graphics drivers and sound drivers.

Hard Drive Not Recognized After Reformat Not Completed Successfully
Anyone know why? I formatted it to ntfs in windows 7 and a popup came up saying "the format could not be completed successfully". Then the drive did not show up. It does not show up in computer management / disk management at all. I have tried it plugged in internally through ide and externally through my enclosure. I have also tried to see if osx could recognize the drive in disk utility but no luck. Any ideas how to fix this?

Switching Hard Drives Without Having To Reformat
I have a harddrive that was setup in computer a with win xp pro. Works fine. I took the same hd and switched it to computer b with a different motherboard, processor, etc. The computer b just keeps rebooting because-of course- it doesn't recognize the hd settings because win was installed on a different computer. How can i get this hd to work with computer b without having to reformat it and reinstall win to work on computer b?
I want this hd to work just as it was in computer a.

How Easy Is It To Reformat With Drive Image ?
Can you erase everything on your hardrive ( reformat) and then put a cd with everything on your hardrive cloned ( copied) on a cd including the o, s. (Everything ) using drive image 7 or 2002 and a cdrw or dvdrw and reinstall everything that was erased by just putting in that cd with all the contents of the previous hardrive content backed up on it or is it a little more involved then that? I would like to reformat every six months or so just to clear out the cobwebs but i am not very computer literate . And i never knew how to reformat the old fashioned way.

New System Old Hard Drive
I have an old hard drive that has those old ribbon connections to transfer data to the mother board. I have a new computer that mostly uses those cool little ata (i think that is what they are called) connections. The new computer has a vista os. I opened up the case and i was surprised to see on the motherboard a wide ribbon connection and so i connected the old hard drive and a free power connection. When i turned on the computer, the system started up like usual and did not notice the new hard drive. I went to the control pannel and did an automatic add hard drive call and it did not find the old hard drive. Any suggestions?

Usb Drive Not Working After Reformat From Exfat To Fat32
I just purchased a 64gig usb and i was super excited n stuff, well it was working fine but it was an exfat format, obviously since the computeres at my school were windows xp i knew it wouldnt work. So i decided to format it to ntfs but failed miserably, instead i managed to format it to fat32 and it was functioning properly. I wanted to test it before i would attempt to reformat to ntfs so i threw on a movie on there. Half way through the copy process the power cut out, so i left the computer and went to the movies came back, its not working. Windows just says " usb device not recognised". So i tried it on all ports, even on my laptop and didnt work. Ive tried evertthing since, and im desperate to get this thing working, im pretty sure its not a usb port problem because my mouse, printer and everything else works fine.

Hard Drive, Not System, Randomly Restarting
I recently noticed that one (maybe 2) of my hard drives power off and power on a few seconds later. I have a dual boot system and it seems that the boot disk w/ xp is the one with the issue. I will be using vista and i will hear a drive power down and then restart/spin-up again - similar to the sound when the whole system powers down and powers on, respectively. This happens regardless of load and seems to happen randomly.

How To Install Another Sata Hard Drive Into System ?
I'm installing another hard drive into my system, so i can put linux on it. When i opened the case i found out the the alienware system used sata not a regular ata hard drive. I never installed an sata hard drive with another one already in there. I'm buying another serial ata 15-pin female-to-4-power connector / serial ata adapter, which looks like this: and a sata hard drive, i also have extra serial sata cable which look like this, and i know go into the motherboard: but is that all i need? I'm confused on how the new hard drive is going to get power, or do i hook up the black end (14 pin) to the new hard drive then hook the 4 pin white part to the female port on the far right hand corner of the old sata hard drive already in my system and thats it? Or do i just connect the connect the black 14 pin into the sata hard drive then connect the white end to that hanging power cord by my ram?

Hard Drive Issue - Operating System Not Found
Purchased a new 80gb hd today. Selector was on slave so connected it up, started pc and it came up with something on the lines of "operating system not found". Not sure why, i looked at my existing hard drive, it's set to cs (cable select?) I changed it to master and started up again without the new hd in, again it came up with the operating system error. Any advice chaps?

Large Hard Drive Transfers Bring The System To A Crawl
I've got all the proper/latest drivers for the system installed. Using pata drives, dma on, high performance mode on. What could it be, an awful pata controller on the cheap motherboard? The single core a64 3800+ didn't behave like this when large file copy operations were underway.

Use Laptop Hard Drives In Raid 5 Array For Whs System Drive
One thing i don't like about whs is the lack of failure protection for the system drive. If the system drive dies the whs is toast. I have an adaptec 3805 hardware raid card ( 8 x internal sas/sata ), and am considering putting the os on a raid 5 array. Doesn't need to be be particularly big in capacity, but small in physical volume occupied by the drives and low power consumption. To this end i am considering a super-micro 8 2. 5inch drives into 2 5. 25inch bay module, and a set of seagate 7200. 3 laptop hard-drives, probably 4 500gb in a raid 5. The 7200 drives don't use much more power than the 5400 drives. I checked the data sheets. Data is currently on 3. 5inch seagate drives
How crazy is the idea of using laptop hard-drives ( 7200rpm or otherwise ) in a raid array?
The raid array would be transparent to whs as it would be done in hardware.

Reformat Overwritten Cd
Left an installation disk in my cdrw drive and one of the munchkins got to playing on the computer and it looks like they tried to burn a song on the disk. Now i want to install the software on my new laptop and cannot read from the drive. Explorer now identifies it as an audio cd and the only file that shows up is a track01. Cda file that real player tries to open. Cd properties shows the disk as being full, but this 1kb file is the only file that is listed. Is it possible that the disk can be fixed, or am i better off confessing my sins to the software vendor and begging them for a replacement copy?

Reformat Advice
I'd be really grateful if anyone here could share with me what the best sequence of steps would be to totally wipe out / reformat an already partioned hard drive. This hard drive has 2 versions of windows (win 2000 and win xp) on it and two partions. I'd like to unpartion the hard drive since it's a small hard drive anyway, and totally reformat using windows xp (which i own the cd for and have on hand). Any advice? What all do i need to gather or save off of the computer? Is there an easy way to save the drivers that run certain programs? This computer is running really crappy and i think it's because the virus scan has finally removed enough virus-attacked files that there are too many missing peices!
The last time i reformatted a hard drive was over 5 years ago with windows 3. 1 so i could really use some "words of warning". The local computer company wants 60 bucks to do this and i thought i could probably do it myself with a little good help.

Seagate Drive Failed - System Unable To Read From The Drive
The drive in question is a seagate barracuda 7200. 11 500 gb, with original firmware being sd15. As i've got to know of their "built-in failure", i've immediately flashed the firmware to the current available sd1a. I thought it will prevent from the drive failing. Now a few days ago i was happily using my computer without a hitch. At one moment os was unable to read from the drive and rendered it unusable (the gui at least), and the mouse cursor freezes for a few seconds in one second delays. This behaviour stopped immediately as i disconnect the drive from the motherboard.could that have been caused by me hot plugging the drive a few times? Or is it the drive itself and nothing can be done now? The system will boot with the drive connected but it will take very long. I've got maximus formula motherboard and two 500 gb's in raid0 for os partition. One wd 500 gb, one seagate 1tb, and the drive in question.

Windows Xp System Crash Cause Of No Hard Disk Space
I have a windows xp operating system. April 1 major crash-couldn't reboot (no hard disc space), april 2 conducted system recovery, redownloaded: ad aware, spybot. Panicware popup stopper, sygate, avg antivirus, blackice, ace mega codecs. Total remaining hard disc space 31. 1 gb, 3 april computer started to switch off automatically sometimes every 10 minutes sometimes went for hours without switching off (this problem has now mysteriously disappeared), remaining disc space 25. 4 gb, carried out a disc clean up, avg reported no viuses detected. Just to be sure i downloaded norton which came with the computer but i had never utilized before. Did an update and full scan-no viruses detected. So my question is where did the 5 plus gbs go overnight? Or perhaps a more sensible question would be, how can i track it down?

Is Usb Hard Drive Safer Than Normal Hard Drive ?
At the moment i have about 2t of data over 5hard drives, most of then films i have converted to avi from home as i live in uni halls the rooms are small, i am worried that leaving my pc on all the time will lower the life of my hard drives with data on, do you think it would be a good choice to put them into a usb drive and that way i only use them when i need? Is usb hard drive safer than normal hard drive ? Or am i just being silly?

How Do You Know Which Drive Fail In 10+ Drive System ?
Just wondering, in a self build whs system that has more than 10 drives, if the whs management console says one drive fail, how do you find out which one failed? Assuming not all drives have led or health indicator.

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive
I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?
And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?
Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?
Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Changing Whs System Drive
I built a whs system last week and i put the system drive on an old 200gb hdd that i had laying around, and i have a 1tb drive in there for storage. I want to replace the old drive and put in a new 1. 5tb drive as the system drive and a storage drive. I would prefer not to have to reinstall whs if possible. Any suggestions?
