Usb Device Cause Computer To Freeze Or Not To Boot

I have recently been having issues left and right with my computer freezing or not given booting. I got it mainly fixed but i found out something strange. It would appear when i had my card reader connected and my wireless usb adapter connected (with the usb cord connected) the computer would either freeze while loading the os or not even boot at all. When the card reader was connected i had a 2gb sd card in it and for some reason the card wasn't being detected at all and vista wasn't even detecting the card reader till after maybe 5min. After plugging it in. Also, the other strange thing is when i had my usb wireless adapter plugged in with the usb cord the computer wouldn't even boot or it would freeze like above. When i finally just connected the wireless adapter by itself windows loaded fine with no freeze/lock ups (and yes, i don't have the card reader connected right now). Idk but i'd hate to say this but would it be a psu issue? I was playing l4d and killing floor fine last night with my xfx 4850 oc'ed. What is going on here? Side note: has the latest ati drivers been causing anybody any issues lately? Like lock ups or anything? At first though i thought it was the oc'ing from catalyst causing the issue but i guess it wasn't.

Will A Computer Boot From A Usb / Usb 2.0 Device?

Will a computer boot from a usb/usb 2. 0 device? Ex. Cd-rom, how does that detect in the bios? What bios settings must be made to enable that. The reason i ask is i was thinking about building a comp with no internal optical drives. I wanted to hide the box out of site while the *-rom and *-rw drive are easily accessible on my desk top.

Usb Causing Computer To Freeze

I want to start off saying that i feel really dumb about posting this question. I have worked on and off in the it field for the last 14 years and this one is stumping me. I guess you could say that my skills have started to rot away. I have a slack data analyst position and have turned a screw driver on a computer is like a year. Mmmm brain beginning to mush. Here is my dilemma and i have googled it to no result. My neighbor has a home built machine that she has been having problems with since it was built last year. I didn't build it, but being a nice enough neighbor i thought i would lend her a helping hand. The computer has an asus m2n68-vm mainboard. This specific version does not have the dvi or hdmi built in. Surprising how all google searches point directly to that board. The person who built it installed a x64 5000+, a 7300 gs video card, 4gb ram, 80gb hard drive, and a cheap lite-on dvd drive. If i remember right, she paid 1k for it may-ish 2009. Ha ha, but i digress. So here is the problem. The neighbor claims that since november, the computer randomly freezes up when inserting a flash drive or when connecting her easyshare camera to the front usb ports on the front of this custom tower. She claims that she hasn't had the problem before that. So i take a look at the computer. It is not just the front ports. It is all ports. When the computer freezes it locks the keyboard and mouse. Explorer seems to be frozen completely. Its not every time a device is plugged in. Anyone have any ideas?

Usb Headset Causes Hp Computer To Freeze Until Unplugged

My problem relates to a usb headset. It appears that when i hit a heavy load on the system sound my computer freezes up. It comes back right away (most of the time) if i unplug the usb connector on the headset (logitech). If i do not unplug the headset the system will sometimes have a moving mouse cursor but it is completely unresponsive (can not click on anything on the win 7 menu bar). Please let me know if there is any additional information i can provide to help solve this problem.

Message: Reboot & Select Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media

I built my first computer about 2 weeks ago but have noticed a problem. When i turn the computer on it shows the motherboard screen and stays there for approx 15-20 seconds. Then it goes into a black screen stating that i need to "reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. "

I am a bit confused on what this means. If i restart the computer while it shows the message it starts up with no problems. What can i do to have this message no appear as i power on my computer? Also during the shift from one screen to another, the screen blinks in green and other colors. What can this be? Can it be that i have my lcd tv connected to my computer with a dvi to hdmi cable?Besides these issues, everything seems to run great, no overheating at all.

Printer Usb Device Connected To This Computer Has Malfunctioned

Ok so i was installing two printers (officejet 6000 (e609)) at my work today. The first one set up well and did the auto alignment print but when i put the install disk in and was prompted to insert the usb cable the bubble popped up and said "a usb device connected to this computer has malfunctioned, " and the installation could not proceed because it didn't recognize the printer. The second printer installed fine so i know the setup i did was not the problem. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Also what is the hp printer support number for canada?

Pc Desktop Freeze And Hangs On Boot Up

Some time back, the computer started to hang on boot. After pressing the power button, the hard drive / "busy" light would simply stay lit and nothing would happen (no booting, no signal to monitor, etc. But the cpu fan would spin). To get it to boot, i simply have to keep turning it on and off till i get that 'click' noise just after turning it on. Sometimes, the pc randomly freezes when i'm in windows also. Now i have opened up the pc, and checked all cables/connections. I have also tried re-arranging the ram modules (using one only, using both, etc. ) And also used different hard drives so i think i can say that items are ok. There is no sound card / modem / etc. , Everything is on-board so all slots are free except for the agp. The system came with built-in graphics but i have put a vid. Card in the agp slot which automaticaly disables on-board video. Unfortunately, i cannot recall exactly how long ago the problem started to occur - that would allow me to determine for sure whether the problem is related to the graphics card. Now i have tried removing the agp card and resorting to on-board video and the comp has booted without problem however that was a single time and due to the randomness of the problem, i still can't say 100% that it's related to the agp card, especially since i don't understand the technical side of the system boot. First, can anyone describe / explain that 'click' sound that occurs after boot. i.e. , Is it the hard drive / something else initializing?

I guess the next question, would a bad video card / bad slot be a possible cause of this? I have taken the vid card out and put it back in, ensuring that it is in firm, etc. The randomness of the problem compounds the difficulty of trying to pinpoint it. Once the comp is on, it works fine, and it's really just random when the freeze-up / boot problems occur, i.e. I can think of no specific activity/action that causes it.

Hard Drive Causes Xp To Freeze On Boot Up

I have an older dell system (by older i mean over 3 yrs) and i installed a wd 160 gb hard drive in it about a year ago using the supplied controller card, with an ntfs format to the drive. The drive (which has been my main data storage drive since i installed it) worked fine for that year. Resently i was installing a program off of a cd that was scratched up pretty bad on to that drive. After multiple cleanings of the disk, and crashing of the installer the computer totally locked up. I couldn't even get the num lock lights to function. So i hit the reset button. When the computer tried to come back up it froze at the blank (black) screen after the windows xp booting screen. After some intenstive trouble shooting of the attached hardware i discovered that if i removed the 160 gb drive from the system (either physically, or by disabling the controller card) the system booted fine. I also tried the drive connected directly to the eide controller on the motherboard with only the boot drive as the only other device and it was connected to the other controller, this also caused the system to freeze in the same spot. Trying the drive on another xp machine, and a windows 2000 machine resulted in simular issues (the windows 2000 machine stoped at the windows splash with the scrooling blue bar. )

I even moved all of the data off of one of the other drives, reformated it, and reinstalled windows xp, and service pack 1 on that drive. When i connect the 160 gb drive up it does the same thing. Also trying to reinstall windows with the drive attached causes windows to freeze at the point that it tries to check that drive. Now here is the real puzzling part, running the western digital diagonstics (it's called life gaurd or something like that) it doesn't show any bad sectors or anything on the drive (i did the extensive test that also does a phsyical scan of the drive, looking for damage to the platters i assume), and running ntfs-reader allows me to read, and copy the files off of the drive, unfortunitly i don't have enough combined space on the two good drives (a 20gb. And a 9gb) to copy off the mission critical stuff i have stored on the drive (about a years worth of video editing of old vhs tapes that i was transfering to dvd for my inlaws. ) Any suggestions other then reformat, and re-edit the vhses?

Emachines Computer Usb ' Device Has Malfunctioned '

I recently got given a faulty emachines 220 computer which i intend on getting out of the house as soon as possible. Not only is it emachines junk but it's a celeron too - it's going to be ebay'd
Anyway, i fixed the fault which was a loose connector on the cpu fan, causing it to complain and shut down when it posted. I then installed a copy of xp pro. Whenever i plug something usb in, the xp "device has malfunctioned" bubble comes up. This happens no matter what the device is. I've updated/reinstalled the usb and chipset drivers which didn't solve it. I then booted knoppix live, which didn't recognise any usb devices either. I've checked the bios to see if usb is disabled or anything, and it's not. My suspicion is that the usb controller is fried though.

Inaccessible Boot Device

Where do i start?

I'm getting the fatal blue screen with the message "inaccessible boot device". I've tried everything. Cables are okay. Bios detects the hard disk. Seatools' diagnostic program detects the partitions. But i can't access it in any way to run a 'chkdsk' on it or to scan it for viruses. Hdd re-generator detects it and runs a scan for bad sectors for a while. But the system restarts or shuts down before completing the scan. I installed another hard disk so i could recover data and/or scan it for errors. But when my 'cursed' hard disk is connected to the system, nothing happens. No progress.

Can't Find Boot Device - Mbr Is Bad On C

I just added a new slave drive to my old computer yesterday. The drive has xp on it, i just haven't formatted it yet. After i plugged in in using cs i rebooted and for some reason my computer booted from that drive, which is now called e:. My master drive is still there and looks to be fine. I went into bios and changed my boot options and hdd options so that it would boot my c: drive first. Now when it goes to boot the c: drive it gives me an error saying that their is nothing to boot. If i have my cd drive plugged in it tries to boot that but says nothing is there. So anyway, for some reason i think my mbr is bad on my c:. I really don't want to format or anything. What would be the best way to fix this issue? I have the ultimate boot cd, should i just pop in xp and fix the mbr? Last time i had this issue i think i ended up reinstalling xp which was a pain.

Error - Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device

I had a few problems getting pc to run (namely, i somehow lost the jumper for the bios pins on the motherboard. Because i had no jumper, it kept running in recovery mode. Took me a while to figure out, too). I don't know if it matters, but i popped out the battery as some instructions stated. I waited ten minutes and then placed the battery back, positive side up, which is what i remembered it being before i removed it. I only did that because i was at a loss at what else could be done to get the system running. Now, the system boots up fine and recognizes all devices, except. The problem is that after the post, an error pops up. "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device"

I had made a floppy that had the upgraded bios on it and had stuck it in the system before powering it up. I know the floppy works, because it worked on another system. I tried installing windows xp without the upgraded bios to see if it would work, and it did. I suppose that means that the cd drive works, but i have no way to tell if the floppy drive does. From what i can see in the [f2] bios setup utility, it is recognized. I don't see why the floppy drive wouldn't work. After all, it's just a floppy drive, with power & connection to mobo. The boot order is floppy, hard drive, cd-rom. And no matter what i do, the computer keeps throwing the error at me.

No Bootable Device Insert Boot Disk Press Any Key Hp

The day before yesterday, i turned off the pc using windows vista menu > shut down. When i turned it on, after the hp logo, it shows a black screen with the following error: no bootable device - insert a boot disk and press any key. I already tried to load bios setup defauts, did memory and primary hard disk self tests (they were ok), changed the boot order (f10), but the error message persists. I did the reset procedure, which i unplugged the battery and the ac charger and keep the power button pressed for 6 seconds, but it didn't worked either. I tried the (f11) recovery mode, but the error message persists (i do not have the recovery discs to boot from the disc). I tried to boot from windows xp disc but it stays forever on the press any key to start from the cd message. I tried to boot it using another os cd (ubuntu) but it asks to update the bios. I do not have vista dvd (it did not come with the pc). What else can be done? How can i solve this problem?

Insert Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

In brief i used killdisk to wipe my hard drive which worked fine its been wiped clean. (My laptop does not have a floppy drive)

Now when i load my laptop up it comes up in a dos kind of environment and displays the following:

"Intel undi, pxe-2. 0 (build 082)
Copyright (c) 1997-2000 intel corporation

Sis900 pxe bootrom v1. 09 hook int19

Cliet max addr: 00 03 0d 28 fc 91 guid: 00020003-0004-0005-0006-000700080009
Pxe-e51: no dhcp or proxydhcp offers were received. Pxe m0f: exiting intel pxe rom

Reboot and select proper boot device
Or insert media in selected boot device and press a key"

Again i have been in then bios settings and changed the priority to load the cd 1st, i also presume by device they are referring to my cd drive. I tried to put fdisk on and format but i now think i may of put them onto cd wrong. Anybody heard of how to get out of this then tell me, i am on a desktop at the minute and yes i can put files onto cd if needed but only program i have managed to load so far from reboot via cd is killdisk.

Computer Beep Then Freeze

My friends computer is acting weird. He says this happens on the net more than anything. He'll be surfing and then the computer gives out a single beep and then freezes. He has to shut it down and reboot and then its fine for awhile. But usually happens again in a hour or so. He's on dial-up if that makes a difference.could it be overheating? Some feedback would be appreciated. He says it happens mostly on the net but has happened during normal use.

How Can Your Non Usb Or Ps/2 Device Be Usb Compatible ?

How can this device exist, logically? This device converts non-usb (ps/2) devices (mice or keyboards) into usb devices. Instead of having to use your mouse or keyboard via ps/2, with this device you can use them via usb. The auction mentions how the device you are converting, which obviously needs to be ps/2 to start, must be usb compatible. So, how can your non-usb, or ps/2, device be usb compatible? This simply does not make sense to me. I tried this converter with a few of my ps/2 mice and keyboards and it did not work. I could not use my devices as usb while they were connected to this converter. Surely the manufacturers of certain mice and keyboards did not design their devices as ps/2 devices and allow them to work as usb devices just incase someone else created and sold a device that converts ps/2 devices into usb devices. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me, because from the looks of it, the idea of converting ps/2 to usb is stupid if your ps/2 device must somehow be usb compatible.

My mouse wont work. Its that glowing one from xoxide, and every time i plug it in my computer freezes. Same thing with my backlit keyboard, the backlite function freezes anything. Anyone know if i can fix it? Or is it completely non-motherboard related?

Dvd R / Rw Drive Cause Computer Freeze

I recently changed cases to the antec 900 since it had more fans and better cooling. I didn't change any hardware except for my power supply (500w to a 550w). I connect everything back up, and my dvd drive doesn't work. The symptoms are as follows. I can put a cd or a dvd in there, and it locks up my pc. It locks up everything but my mouse. I can move my mouse around, but cannot click anything. When i eject the cd or dvd, my computer unfreezes. I do not have to reboot. While the cd or dvd is in there, i can do nothing, but once i eject it, everything else is fine again. I know it is not the ide cables, as it does this with 2 different cables. It smells like a driver issue, but i tried uninstalling both the dvd rom drive and the ide controllers and rebooting to let windows reinstall the drivers, and neither of these attempts fixed the problem. Anyone have any ideas? The dvd drive is a sony dru-800a, and it is the only drive connected to the secondary ide channel. My hard drive is on the primary ide channel. I have no other devices connected to the ide channels. The only other thing i changed when i had my computer in the old case was the 3. 5in floppy drive. I didn't feel the need to install it with the new case.

Computer Freeze At Bios And Screen Goes Black

Last friday the computer stopped working correctly. On start up it boots normally which it goes past the bios screen and can even enter the bios utility as would any normal working computer would do. Though this is the catch. Once the computer past the normal bios and begins to enter to the hard drive to boot from windows. The screen goes black, i think it freezes there, though i'm not sure because my friend only told me this stuff over the phone. These are some things that i told him to try over the phone. One make sure you test each ram (512mbx2) test each ram stick by itself. Make sure that you have only one in at a time, and alternate from each ram stick you have. So that you can test the memory because it might be damaged. After doing all that work. Testing the memory didn't do anything the computer still crashed with 512mb or 1024mb it didn't matter what it had, it still crashed. So i'm asking what you guys might think about this problem, and if you have any suggestions at all.computer specifications:

Intel core 2 duo 1. 86ghz
Asus ai series motherboard
512mbx2 (1024mb)
Ati radeon 1600 series pci-express video card
320gb hard drive
