Hard Drive Died After Ac Issue

My friend somehow put the power plug in wrong in his maxtor 120g hd and now she's dead. It won't show up anywhere including the bios. Should he not even try anymore? The bad news is that he had 7 years of audio/video work on there with no backup. (I know . Shame shame)

Something tells me he has a chance to get to his data . But then i don't know what i'm talking about. Anything he can try before sending it out for big bucks?

Hard Drive Recovery Possible ?

My seagate 1. 5tb 7200. 11 seems to have died quickly, and before i realized what was going on the drive is only detected in the bios, and trying to access anything just gives me io errors. Is there anything else i could try? I have it backed up with the exception of 10gb or so of new data that wasn't caught by the nightly backup. I suppose the only other method would be to replace the controller. I did try the freezer trick for about 8 hours but it didn't seem to help.

Recovery Of Hard Drive Data

I need help to retrieve the data from my western digital hard drive (40g). Last week my power supply burnt and damaged my mother board. So i tested with another existing system unit with my wd hard drive, it hang in the bios stage after the memory test finish. Cannot do anything. Is it the hard drive problem? May i know anyone can tell me how can i recover my data inside this bad hard drive? I need to recover my data since wd technical support only can give me a replacement of hard drive. I heard a lot of information about freezing the hard drive but i dont dare to do it cos i am afraid it will lead to totally un-recovery stage. I have a lot of useful information and some financial excel format that is shared with my roommate.

Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.

Hard Drive Problem - Data Recovery

I got a harddrive here that's running windows 98 and while you try and boot in it's just fatal error after fatal error. . Vxd's .dlls, mass blue screens and just ends in a freeze up eventually. I'd give the names of the files thats giving errors but it's literally different ones every time. I tried to get into the os from safe mode and it returned a himem.sys error. I figured the ram might be bad but it's good so i copied himem.sys from the 98 cd into windows directory in dos, but still getting the same error. I'm at a loss for what to do now and suppose the only thing i can do is try and recover the data and wipe the harddrive. I was wondering if perhaps i could connect the harddrive to my windows xp machine and salvage the data through there or if anyone has tips on how i could go about this i'd be most thankful.

New Installation Hard Drive Data Recovery

Here's the situation:

1. Had a pc with a motherboard that crashed. 2. Pc had 400 gig hard drive of which 380 gigs of data was used leaving 20 gigs remaining. 3. Replaced the motherboard and installed a new windows partition in the remaining 20 gigs of data. 4. Windows runs and everything works fine. However:

1. Old partition 'c:' says it's corrupted. New partition 'e:' says it has around 400 gigs free. 2. Even though 'c:' should contain 380 gigs of data and 'e:' should only contain the remaining 20 gigs. How do i recover my data?

Hard Drive Recovery Process With Mechanical Failures

Unfortunately, i have to recover data and my backup hard drive is failing. It's a mechanical failure - lots of clicks and some high-pitched squeals. Looked into hard drive recovery options and it seems like they all want to charge me hundreds or thousands of dollars. Does anybody know of a reasonably reliable hard drive recovery process that can deal with mechanical failures but at a reasonable price?

Installing A Second Hard Drive / Don't See In File Manager

I just bought a second hard drive (western digital caviar 250gb, ide ata100). I set the jumpers to slave, while the original (80gb hitachi) to master. After rebooting i had message 'found new hardware. ', but i don't see it in file manager. I bought it as oe replacement from ncix.com. Do i need to format it, or it came preformatted, but something is wrong? The original drive works fine. I have two dvd drives, is this a problem?

Hard Drive Spin Down In File Server From Sata Card

I'm putting together a file server/backup server and plan to have between 6-12 sata ii drives in it. All drives will remain single and individually accessed (i.e. No raid). The file server will continue to run vista and the drives will be in two supermicro cse-m35t-1b (5 drive hot-swap enclosure)

I am currently using an intel board with 6-sata ports (ich8dh) for the file server and through vista, am able to set the drives to automatically spin-down after about 20 minutes of no activity. This works great as most of these drives are just used once or twice a day (thus don't need to be spinning 24/7). Are there any sata controller cards that will allow windows to spin-down the attached drives (just like the intel ich8dh does)? Preferably, i am looking for a 4 or 8 port pci express card (it doesn't need to have raid). I've been looking at the marvell based supermicro aoc-saslp-mv8 since it provides 8 sata ii ports in a 4x pci express package. (~$110)

I've also looked into using a simple 2-port sata pci express sil 3132 based card with one or two sil3726 based port multipliers (1 sata connection to 5 drives, addonics ad5sapm). (~$100 for both the controller & 1 port multiplier)

The drives in the file server will probably, at most, be used 1-2 at a time, and be accessed via a single gigabit ethernet port, thus overall drive throughput really isn't a concern here. My main concern is getting the drives to spin-down, so if there is another sata controller/hba out there that costs more and allows spin-down, i'm open to that as well. http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16817121405&tpk=cse-m35t-1b

Seagate 1.5tb Drive Died - Restoring Data

My backup external drive (a seagate 1. 5tb 7200. 1 with the newest firmware) has gone from slow to not working. I tried scandisk and watched it fail. It was a backup of my main system as well as auxiliary storage. Windows sees the drive but cannot read from it. Is there any software out there that will allow me to recover some of the lost data?

File Transfer Between Hard Drives Causes Computer Crash

I recently installed a new drive into my storage server (one of wd's 1tb green drives) and transferring files to it sometimes results in a computer crash. There were no issues before this latest drive was installed. Crashes have as of yet only happen when this drive is being written to, though i do not write to the other drives often so i am not sure at this point. Crashes happen much more frequently when there is increased disk activity anywhere else in the system. The system is built as follows:

Amd athlon x2 4050e 2. 1ghz dual core cpu
Jetway jnc62k w/ nvidia geforce 8200 mainboard
Os hard drive: hitachi travelstar 5k160 ata-6
Storage drives: 3x1gb wd10eads sata
Windows xp mce w/ sp3

Any suggestions where i should start troubleshooting? Does this sound like a problem you've heard before? I've run smart diagnostics on all the hard drives running wd's diag tools, and it's all come back just fine.

Truecrypt Drive Recovery With Password

I've recently been experimenting with duel boot (xppro, ubuntu) and i foolishly failed to removed my truecrypt fully encrypted drive and it's mirror. When the dust settled i discovered that truecrypt would no longer mount either drive. Windows xp service pack two sees one drive as unformatted, and another as a 128 gb volume, which it is not, they are both 300gb drives. In case all my efforts to recover either volume fail my question becomes this. Is there a service or technique that would allow me to recover the data if i could provide the encryption scheme and passphrase?

As an american i am told to be paranoid that anything can be cracked. The truecrypt forums are a draconian joke and frankly even if it weren't under populated i have high hopes that a greater level of skill can be found here anyway as this place is the top computer specific response from google when given "cryptography forum".

Recovery - Usb Flash Drive

Have a usb thumb drive. Was using a mac yesterday, saving, copying, and using multiple files from my flash drive. At the end of the day, i went to open a file and realized that two entire (and fairly important) folders were missing, as were several more recent files-some from the same day. Now my drive reads as though it has more space available than it should. I keep seeing all these scams and $50 services to recover lost files from flash memory. Anyone know of any reliable free-ware or techniques i could use to get my files back?

Its only a 512mb memorex memory stick.

Broken Drive Caused By Data Recovery Software

I accidentally formatted a drive recently and used file scavenger to get the data back, copying everything it found onto another drive plugged into a dock. After rebooting or hotplugging the drive back into the dock it makes my computer freeze up. On reboots windows xp just hangs after the splash screen. I'm assuming i copied boot sector files or something on to the drive that i shouldn't have. Everything is accessible on the drive when i plug it into my laptop running os x, but as soon as any windows install sees the disc it either freezes up or bluescreens. Is there any way to delete the offending files and fix the disc? The only system files i see in os x is a folder "system volume information", none of the $ type files i saw when first scanning with file scavenger.

Usb Drive Wont Work After Unplugging It During File Transfer

I gave this usb flash drive to a friend as a gift http://www.Supertalent.com/products/stt_usb_detail.php

Its the 8gb pico usb drive, ive had one for over a year and ive had no problems but my friends wont work after he told me he accidentally unplugged it during a file transfer on his mac. If i plug it in to a mac it wont see the drive, not even the disk utility. If it plug it in to a vista machine, it gets seen but it says "unknown device" and it wont show up under disk management either. Is there any possible way to fix it? This is a first for me since i thought you could not damage usb drives if you unplugged them during a file transfer (except for normal data corruption). Any ideas?

Computer Just Died

I was working on my computer when all of a sudden the blue screen of death appeared. It started doing a "memory dump" and i waited about 30 seconds and then i tried crtl, alt, del and nothing happened so i just held the power button until it turned itself off. When i turn it back on, the computer starts just like normal, the power light comes on and the fans start up, but the monitor stays in standby mode, nothing ever comes up on the monitor. I have a second computer connected to this monitor via a kvm switch, so i know the monitor is fine. Any ideas what is wrong or how i can diagnose what the problem is? I mean if you can't see the screen, what can you do? Is is the motherboard or what?

Pc Died Upon Rebooting

I rebooted my pc ( in system specs) but it did not restart properly. It got past shutting down then went to a black screen, fans on box were still running tho. So i tried holding down the power button for 10 seconds but it still stayed on. The only way i could turn it off from then was to flick the power switch. Now my pc will not turn on at all. No lights no fans no movement at all when i try to turn it on. I have taken the psu motherboard ram and cpu out and put onto a carboard box. I tried to boot it with just those peices in and nothing happend. I then tried just the mobo, cpu and psu. Still nothing

Im compleatly lost, im assuming somthing blewup when it was rebooting, i cant smell anything bad and there dosnt seem to be any physical dmg. No leaking caps or any bad wires. Going to try a nother psu in it somtime today, have you guys got any other ideas, also speculate what might have killled it?

I had put everthing bad to stock frequencys and voltage for the last week due to it getting hotter then i would like. Cpu was hitting 65s and nb was doing 60s, 45cpu and 50nb on stock.

My Computer Died

I investigated and found:

1. Pushing the on button did nothing, no beeps or lights or anything. So i swapped the p/s from another computer, and . 2. The new p/s got it started as far as "suggested sdram is . " But it hung before detecting ide drives. It seems like no power was coming out of the m/b, as keyboard and mouse didn't light up, cpu fan didn't start, etc. So . 3. I put the p/s back into the other computer and moved my hard drive, and the hard drive still wouldn't boot, even in the new environment. At this point it will only work as a slave. Did my power supply blow and take the m/b with it? And why won't the hard drive boot?
