Flash Ssd After Install Of Win7
Replies: 8 | Post Date: 12-11-2009, 09:40 AM | User: Darksidea8 | Forums: hardforum.comJust got in my new drive. I'm planning to use it as the core of my new build, upgrading from xp pro 32 to win 7 pro 64. It will be my os & key app drive, while the new 1tb caviar black will be games/apps/storage. Can i flash the ssd after the install of win 7 pro 64, or do i need to plug it into this system before i begin the rebuild & flash it before i install the new os?
Btw: having never flashed a drive before: do i need to download the update & burn it to a dvd to flash the ssd?

Can't Install Vista Or Win7 On Sata Drive
I thought it would be simple. Does it matter which sata slots are used for a boot drive. There are 8 on my board 4 controlled by intel ichr7 and the others by marvel. Attempts to install windows result in error message that the drive is configured as active in the bios and suggest using diskpart utility to clean the drive? Does sata use master/slave? The hd is a wd caviar blue 300gb. What am i doing incorrectly?

Defragmentation Of Usb Flash Drive Vs Ssd
Since ssd can't be de-fragment, i thought usb flash drive should work the same way. But when my usb flash drive is badly fragmented (it's fat32), i can easily see a delay when i try to open & save a file. Needless to say, after i de-fragment the usb flash drive, there is no more delay. So shouldn't the 2 technology being so close that if ssd doesn't require de-fragmentation, so neither should usb flash drive?

Install Adobe Flash Problem
How do i install adobe flash on an hp mini? My son got an hp mini for christmas, but can't play some of his games or facebook's farmville. Says we need to install adobe flash. I try to do that, but then it just stops. Is there a problem with how much memory is on these mini's or what might we be doing wrong?
Answer:- download adobe flash from the following link, the model of your computer has nothing to do with it. Hardware is all the same at the core. Might be the way hp installed windows though. Also note that some things in flash 10 don't work in flash 9, and vice-versa. Until that mess blows over i'm keeping flash 9 and recommending it to you as well. http://get. Adobe.com/flashplayer/

Install Windows Xp / Vista Using A Usb Flash Drive Stick
I found a way to install windows xp or vista using a usb flash drive stick, i thought i would share it as its pretty useful. For people who understand the method, it may be useful for other stuff too, the program is called usb_multiboot_10. I have tried it and it does work.

Various Bsods In Win7
I arrived home this evening and booted my pc as i always do. Everything was working stupendously and then out of the blue, my pc's speakers began to shriek banshee-esque ear piercing noises. I immediately unplug the speakers from my soundcard and the sound goes away. However, i return to my pc to realize that it is completely frozen. I then reboot my pc (at least attempt to) and nothing will post. I investigate by taking off one of the sides of the case and turning it on again. My motherboard, soundcard, gpu and hard drives all load. Save for my cpu's heatsink (thermaltake v1) fan. I found this very odd. I then unplugged the power to the heatsink's fan from the motherboard and plug it into another port for the cpu fan. I plug everything back in and it posts now. However, as it is loading, i get a bsod.code:
Stop: c000021a {fatal system error}
0x00000000 (0xc0000221 0x001003f0)
I try to restart again and it asks me if i want to launch windows repair or start windows normally. I select windows repair and it bsods on that giving me:
Code:
C000021 unknown hard error
Systemrootsystem32
Tdll.dll
This bsod re-ocurred nearly everytime i tried booting windows repair (yes, even when i tried a repair disc i had made from windows backup that was said to restore my system image that i save on my external hard drive. The other bsod that occurred (that i still recall) was one saying the usual bsod information and had "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" as the error. I am currently about to run memtest86+ overnight to see if i get any results. I have had previous hardware mishaps in the past such as a secondary drive disappearing. I changed the sata port and updated the firmware and that has fixed it since (been about a year and a half). Last october i had my pc just randomly bsod and refuse to boot. I ran memtest back then and no errors came after 5 hours or so. If i recall correctly, i re-installed windows vista and it worked fine after that. This is my first bsod in windows 7 after 9+ months of use and it saddens me greatly. With my repair cd not working or seemingly able to load my system image as it cannot even boot into windows repair. Is my last resort going to be to try a windows reinstall? This will be my 4th re-format this year with all of the beta, rc, retail, etc and i'd rather stay away from that if i could as it gets old doing it too often.

Cheap Drive For Win7
Okay so i want to try out windows 7 rc, but i don't feel like partitioning either of my drives so i am thinking just buy a cheap third drive and then i can have:
1. 5tb for storage
250gb for xp and programs
New drive for win7 os
So i was thinking hey maybe i can get one of those 32gb ssd drives and use that for the operating system! A quick browse of newegg and i found a selection of 32gb ssd's, but i don't know if any of them are of good quality. Then i read this article:-
http://www.Pcper.com/article.php?Aid=669&type=expert&pid=7
Which basically says that putting an os on a ssd will cause performance to degrade significantly over time until you reformat the drive and install again, which doesn't sound fun. I guess what i am wondering is does anyone use a small ssd costing ~$100 for their os? Does that make sense? As far as i know even a heavily fragmented ssd might perform better than a new 7200rpm drive(?) And if you would use a 32gb ssd for the os, which one is the best?
Would it make more sense just to buy another 7200 rpm drive? I would consider partitioning my 250gb drive but it is not exactly the fastest drive and i am tired of my extremely slow xp startup. I'm not really interested in raid or in spending more than $100.

Installing Win7 On A Ram Drive ?
Been playing around with superspeeds ramdisk 10. 0 and it got me wondering if there, by chance, could be any of you knowing a way of utilizing the ram disk as a primary disk for win7?
I remember some years back a guy succeeding in booting on a ramdrive, installing and running winxp on it.

Hardware Raid 5 Options For Win7
I have an areca 1220 card, and i love it. But i want to migrate to win 7, fresh install. Areca doesn't seem to support win7 from what i can tell. When i build a new system, with new hd's, i still want to go with a raid 5 storage system, using large hd's. Since i'm buying all new (or plan to at least). I'm open to suggestions for what hw i should get. Any advice for me?

Intel G2 Trim Win7 Support
I'm shopping for a ssd and i want to buy the intel 80gb g2. I also want to be able to install windows 7 simultaneously, and have trim support. It is true intel has said they want to have trim support with the release of win7. I think a lot of people are in my shoes, and are waiting to buy. This is just a thread raising awareness of the issue. If anyone finds news of the firmware update, post here! If you think trim doesn't matter, or that i'm crazy, post away!

Multiple Sound Cards In One Computer ( Vista / Win7 )
Simply put, what issues should i expect? I'm contemplating a xonar essence stx for my hd650 and on-order hd800 headphones. I'm fully aware what a good match it is for my headphones, and what a not-so-good match it may be for sending multichannel digital audio to a receiver or gaming, for which there may be better cards. In a perfect world, i could have two cards in one box and somehow configure software applications to send audio to the appropriate device. In the real world, are there any issues with this? If i were to go down that path, what should i expect?
Alternatively, is there any known method (in windows) to have audio sent simultaneously to two different audio output devices?
Perfect world: play blu-ray movie. Truehd etc tracks are bit-streamed over sound card a to my receiver. Simultaneously, 2. 0 off the same track is sent to my audiophile sound card b connected to my high impedance headphones. At any given time, i can turn on the receiver (sound in room) or plug in and put on headphones. (Or both, for a creepy effect. ) Is this sort of thing even possible with today's hardware and software?
(Real world today: sound card a in computer a, a htpc connected to my receiver, sound card b in computer b, a computer next to my headphones, and both systems streaming files off computer c, which hosts all the actual content, a lot of equipment. )

Ssd Vs Ramdrive
Just curious, as i have no experience with either of these. I was wondering if i was to want to use something for a "scratch drive" of sorts ( editing video, joining dl'ed movie clips, etc) what would be the better route, and why? Maybe some pros and cons of each. Would only need to be around a few ( 4-7 ? ) Gigs probably.

Best Way To Use An Ssd Drive
I've been reading up on the drives, but wanted some advice on how best to use it. I'm looking at the 80gb intel x25-m g2 - primarily because it's in the 'affordable' category at @ $250-$270. I plan to also install a larger internal hdd & run both. 80 gb gives me some concern, as my wife and i are memory hogs (tons of pictures & video of the kid, video games, productivity apps, etc. ) I've got my current, aging 300 gb internal hdd set up in 3 partitions: one for the os & productivity (read ms office, etc. ) Apps, one for video games, and one for my wife's photos, downloads (drivers, mod tools) etc. We've also got an external drive for back up & storing larger video files. The problem is that the 300gb hdd is so fully loaded, i have to delete programs to add content, and things are bogging down. Also, the external hdd is so slow, i can't use it to keep any programs on, because the load times are glacial. So the question: do you keep the sdd limited to only the os & key apps - or go ahead and load it up with your favorite programs? Do you partition an sdd?
What are your best recommendations for using an 80gb sdd?

Looking to upgrade my main drive wd6400aaks which will become a new storage drive. Ssd is not really in my price range for storage amounts. I was looking at the velociraptor but people are saying they aren't worth it with the newest drives that are out.

I prefer to have a smaller drive which will contain the os and applications, but everything else (games, music, movies, etc. ) Will go on another larger/mechanical drive. So what would you guys recommend for something in 75 to 150 gb range?

Ssd And Standard Drives
So i'll be building a new computer in the next week or so and i have most of the parts ordered. I have been using a western digital caviar green wd10eads 1tb 32mb as an external drive hooked up to my laptop and my plan was to use it as my boot drive in the new build. However seeing as the rest of my system is reasonably high end (at least by my standards some of you guys are nuts) i thought it may be slightly on the slow side to run windows. I don't have a ton more money to spend as the rest of the parts have cleaned me out so my options are:
A) pick up another wd10eads 1tb and run them in raid 0
Or
B) buy a ssd such as the ocz vertex series 30gb
I've never owned a ssd so please forgive my noobness. I did search around but was unable to find the answers to a few specific questions i have regarding my situation. 30gigs wont cover my needs for os, programs, and games but it's all i can afford in a ssd right now. Between windows 7 and a 10 gig world of warcraft install i don't think i'd even have room left over for the cs4 suite let alone the laundry list of other games i want to install. So would i be better off with my os on the ssd and programs, games, and media on the wd 1tb or everything on 2 of the wb 1tb in raid 0?
Heres my setup so far:
I7 920 /w corsair h20
Evga x58 sli le
Xfx 5870
G. Skill 6gb ddr3 triple channel

Ssd Drive Advice
So i'm looking to upgrade this 64gb core ssd drive to a vertex or falcon drive. I have a few questions regarding what specific combination to go with. Here are my options so far. 2x vertex 60gb raid 0 ~$380
1x falcon 128gb ~$300
$300 is really about the limit of my budget for this so option 1 is really pushing it. I'm leaning heavily towards option 2 then sell off the old drive and get a 2nd one in a couple of months
Second q - i also have a perc5i that i can either use or sell off. My onboard is an ich9r. I'm not sure how much of an increase i would get from the perc (if any). Anyone?
This is primarily for my o/s and programs. Data is all stored on the server. I already have a 1 gb ramdrive. I will be using either win7 or vista ultimate 64 versions.

Drive Imaging With An Ssd
I am looking to image my new hard drive, but it is an ssd. I have read many times that ssd's cannot or should not be imaged. Is this true?

Anything Better Than Intel Ssd Drive ?
I've heard that the ocz vetex 2 is supposed to be faster in both read and writes then the intel ssd, is this true and are they out yet? Or is intel still the fastest for both read and writes.

How To Clean A Used Ssd Drive ?
I have a samsung ssd drive that i pulled out of my laptop. It still has the partitions and old os and data on it. I want to stick it in another computer and load windows 7 on it. Before i would usually just perform a low level format on a used drive but that was with spindle drives. Is there a proper way to remove the partitions and format an ssd drive? I have heard conflicting reports on this so i'm asking for help.

Installing A Ssd Into Notebook
I'm looking into installing a ssd into my notebook soon, and i'm a bit confused:
- Will i need to align my partition on w7? Is it ssd manufacturer dependent?
- I've seen reports that cloning my hd onto my ssd can be tricky, does anyone have a definitive guide/answers on how to do it properly?
- I have recovery discs for my os, is this probably the most painless way to get my os/drivers up and running?
