Computer Freezes / Locks Up

Just recently my pc totally froze while unattended with the internet logged on, by this i mean the mouse/keyboard would not operate and the clock in the system tray had frozen. I had to unplug my pc to turn it off, while trying to subsequently reboot the pc it would not run windows, i noticed windows files had been deleted. I was forced to format the hard drive and reinstall xp, i figured it may have been a virus. However the problem is that even after the reinstall of windows it freezes the same as before any time at all. Last night i switched it on watched it boot into windows and went downstairs, after returning to the pc 30 minutes later it had frozen! No software was installed except the os. Surely this must be a hardware issue, which being a multimedia developer i have little expertise! Can anyone please please please help me!

Computer Locks Up Every Night

It seems like almost every time i leave my computer alone for 6-7 hours, which usually happens to be overnight while i let things download, it locks up. It even locks up occasionally while i'm using it but not nearly as much. When it locks up at night and i restart the next morning, i get repeated errors from perrguardian and have to reinstall it. Also, if firefox is running, all my settings get blown away and i might need to reinstall it. All my bios settings seem to be normal and it isn't overclocked(mainly because i can't get it to oc stabily at all). I've ran spyware and virus scans, so it's not that. I don't think it could be from heat. It runa hot, but not that hot (mid-40's idle and mid-50's under a full load). I've ran prime95 for 3-4 hours during the day without problems. I'm begenning to wonder if it's my hard drive crapping out because of the corruption afterwards. I've heard from a few people that seagates are notorious for going bad. Mabey i'm just looking for an excuse to buy a raptor. Who knows, but anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing these crashes?

Computer Locks Up During Boot

My computer locks up when i boot it up right before the window welcome screen or during it. The only way i can boot up the computer is if i tap f8 and hit last known good configuration. This has been going on for more than a week. I tried to do a repair installation but this did not help. Does anyone have any ideas what i can try to do and can i keep booting the computer this way indefinitely (last known configuration).

Computer Locks Up And Refuses To Boot

Sometimes i managed to boot the computer but mostly not. I don't even come to the post screen. I've tried to trouble shoot, i also tried with replacing the graphic card, how ever it didn't do any difference. All the fans and harddrives seems to get started (i get a green power light and red hdd light) on the front of where the start button is which seem to indicate something is starting) and cpu starts (i've checked inside) but the monitor refused to start and i don't think the windows started to load either. I have found a way to start the computer and that is to turn everything off, also the monitor, do a clear c-mos and then and then re-boot, then it starts. The motherboard doesn't give any bios beeps when trying to boot at all, it just goes black. But when i manage to start it it stays on and i have no problems ones it have started. When i get money in some 2 months i'll try to replace the power supply and if that doesn't work, the specifications:

Amd64 3000+ cpu
A asus k8v-x mo-bo
Ati radeon 128mb graphics
256mb ddr400

Computer Locks Up During Video Playback

My computer acts sluggish most of the time, but remains stable until i try to play any format of movie file. 90% of the time or so my computer will then lockup after opening any movie file. It does the same thing overclocked or stock. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the temperature, sometimes it will come out of a lockup when i control-alt-delete, but the system will run sluggish after this point. I've tried every codec you could think of, switched to vista (got driver stopped responding errors), switched back to xp, use all sorts of media players, reset the cmos, changed settings, etc, etc. I have no idea what the issue could be, but i'm thinking ram or video card. What do you suggest i do?

Computer Locks Up Halfway Through Booting Up

I'm having a problem booting my computer up. I'm computer literate, but the stuff that goes on behind the scenes are a mystery to me. I have an everex explorer rs2800 with windows xp home edition. It starts out fine, shows a grey 'everex' screen, then goes to the black screen with white text. It runs through the normal procedure, "verifying dmi pool data . ", "Boot from cd :" and then "[rcv_mbr]press f10/r to recovery system . " And then it stops dead with the cursor flashing on the line below. At this point pressing f10 does nothing. I left the computer like this and waited-once for over 8 hours. Nothing changed. If i reboot, holding f10 before the last line comes up, it takes me to the recovery system, which works through a few things and then gives me an error message:
System recovery-confirm

Failed to create user partition, we can create the partition via the stored
Dpt data by the first recovery process. Note: this will cause data loss if you have made any partition operation
After the pc is shipped to you. By clicking 'ok' we will perform this dangerous operation. If you are not
Sure, please click 'cancel' to stop the recovery process. I'm not sure if i have made any partition operation (although, seeing as i have no idea what one is, it's hugely unlikely) so i click cancel. I have a lot of important stuff on my computer and the last thing i want is to lose it all. Yeah, i have backups of most of it, but still. Clicking 'cancel' brings up another error message:
Critic error report

Partition creation failed with error code 0
Recovery cannot continue!
Press "ok" to reboot. Pressing 'ok' takes me through the startup and back to where i was in the first paragraph above. There was nothing new, as far as i know, installed that might have caused this. The computer was working fine on friday morning. I shut the computer down because we had an impending storm (and where i live the power can be knocked out by a heavy sneeze) and when i switched it back on friday evening, this happened. In frustration i tried clicking 'ok' to creating a new partition. The computer hesitated, then informed me that the computer needed to reboot to continue. It rebooted, and hung up at exactly the same spot as above.going through the same process to get back to the recovery programme gives me that same error message, followed by another request to reboot. I'm going 'round in circles. At least i still have my netbook to ask this question.

Computer Sometimes Freezes

I have run all sorts of health tests on the hard drive, and it passed all with flying colors. My old raptor x did not do this. Basically, sometimes the screen will freeze. I can move the mouse for a bit, but that will freeze as well, which requires me to force a reboot. This freeze is not consistent, as i can have the pc on for hours without encountering this. What do you guys think it is? I am using windows 7, so could it just be that, since it's a beta?

Computer Freezes

Yesterday, i was half way through burning an iso file to disc using [program name deleted my mod. ] (Have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing i could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my windows xp disc as it's the only one i have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while i was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and i can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway i pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing i could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, i switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that. The computer is 4 years old (intel pentium 4/3. 2ghz/1gb ram/hard drive 149gb) and i've had intermittent problems with the cpu overheating due to dust etc which i've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems ok when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g.copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a cpu, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

Computer Freezes On Start Up

I am trying to fix a computer and would appreciate any suggestions of help. I start the computer, it loads, gets to the windows screen, the blue segmented line goes across a couple of times then the whole thing freezes in that spot, the blue line stops moving and that's as far as it gets. Things i tried:

F8 - safe mode
- Last known good configuration
- Start windows normally
- (Etc)

When i tried these it just came back to the f8 screen. Pushing 'r' didn't do anything (i was told this could make a repair) o. 0 ?

Tried to boot up from an operating system disk by changing the boot up menu (delete) and this didn't work either. All it did was get to the windows screen and the blue line moved across a couple of times and it froze again in that spot. Exactly the same as when i try to start it. I am clueless now as to how to get this computer working. Any ideas?

Computer Freezes Up Frequently

Just got some parts for a new build, and here are the specs, before i go into details on the problems

Phenom ii 955
2x2gb pny optima ddr3 1333
Foxconn a7da-s 3. 0 motherboard
Corsair tx750 psu
Dual xfx 4890's
Wd 500gb hdd (used previously in another build, know it works)
Soundblaster creative audigy 2zs

All parts except for the hdd and soundcard are new

Now, problems started as soon as i finished the build. The rig would artifact in windows and playing games. After a day of troubleshooting, it turned out to be 1 stick of ram. By this point i had tried numerous drivers and reinstalled windows, but it seemed to run fine after that, except every few hours, sometimes less, the system would just freeze up. No bsoding, just audio stuttering and a freeze. I couldn't ctrl alt del out of it either. Now i have new ram on order, but before i bank on that solving the problem, is there anything i can try? I've run 3dmark06, and that ran just fine. Prime ran fine too with the good stick of ram, and had no errors, until the system froze after 14 iterations of prime. Everything is at stock clocks and volts. Temps on the cpu have never gotten above 60c at full load, and gpu's stay at about 70c at load. Both are within the acceptable range, i think. Sometimes when the system freezes, but not always, i will reboot and get a cmos checksum error, or an error telling me to reset the time. Thinking the cmos battery could be dying, i tried to replace that as well, to no avail. Frankly, i'm out of ideas. What shall i do?

Computer Beeps And Freezes

When i turn on the computer, i see the windows splash screen, and then i just get a black screen. I must do a cold boot and then i can go into safe mode. But in safe mode, certain functions cause the computer to freeze and beep. I went to system tools, disk cleanup and the computer froze and started beeping. I had to do a cold boot and then i got the black screen. I did another cold boot and then i got back to safe mode. I tried to launch a mcafee virus scan, but again, the computer froze and started beeping. I had to do a cold boot and then i got the black screen. I did another cold boot and then i got back to safe mode. I ran a hijack this log but i went to save as and tried to save it to a floppy. Again, the computer froze and started beeping. I had to do a cold boot and then i got the black screen. I did another cold boot and then i got back to safe mode. Does anyone know what causes the beeping? Could it be a virus? If so, how can i remove it since the computer freezes and beeps when i try to run my virus scan.

Computer Beeps Once Then Freezes

I currently have a problem with one of my home pc's. The pc is running windows xp pro with all the latest updates. When i start the pc it starts fine with no problems, but after about 15 minutes the pc beeps once and then completely freezes, nothing moves, i am unable to turn off the keyboard cap lock lights, unable to move the mouse etc. Normally i would say that this is something to do with the motherboard because it is effecting the keyboard etc. However this has happened to one of my other pc's in the past, i formatted the drive and it was fine. I think that it maybe caused by a virus because i am unable to run any of my anti-virus tools. I have installed: superantispyware, malwarebytes, avg free and spybot. The only ones i can get to work is superantispyware when running in the alternative start mode. I have tried the following so far: booting in safe mode but the pc does eventually do the same thing and freezes. I have tried running mscopnfig and removing unwanted services and startup items but again this hasnt made any difference. I have checked the event logs and nothing is there. Please can anyone offer any help?

Computer Freezes, And Is No Longer Responsive

I've bought a new set up about 2 months ago and i have yet to get it working properly, as it always likes to freeze. The specs are:

- Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l lga 775 intel p35 atx all solid capacitor intel motherboard

- Evga 256-p2-n751-tr geforce 8600 gt 256mb 128-bit gddr3 pci express x16 sli supported video card

- Intel core 2 duo e8400 wolfdale 3. 0ghz lga 775 65w dual-core processor model bx80570e8400

- Thermaltake tr2 w0070ruc 430w atx power supply

- Hynix 512mb ddr2 ram x2

I've never seen the cpu temp go over 39c, even right after a freeze up. What i mean by freeze is that the computer is no longer responsive (no i/o works) and the screen displays the last thing that i was doing, and i have to use the power button to restart the computer. The computer boots just fine, no beeps. I reformatted the hd and installed windows xp, but with windows installed the computer freezes either when "loading personal settings" or 10 minutes after loading windows. It was rare that it would get past loading personal settings w/o freezing though. (I had all of the new drivers for my hardware reinstalled as well).

Then i decided to just try a fresh install of ubuntu linux to see if the problem was just with windows. Ubuntu boots up just fine and if i don't move the mouse that much and just let the computer sit, it won't freeze for days, but after using the computer (just installing stuff, or browsing the internet) for half an hour or so, i'll get a freeze. I also get a freeze when i am in the bios, but only if i go into the menu to switch the vcore to something else. Just going into the menu, not actually changing anything in the menu. Anywhere else in the bios is just fine and won't freeze at all. I ran memtest86 and i always get a freeze (not an error) in test #5, no bsod's have popped up at all, only freezes. Can't think of anything else to say about it, if anyone has any ideas.

Computer Freezes ( Will Not Complete Post )

During the post, the computer makes a single beep(that is normal), it checks the video and memory, then the following:

Award modular bios v4. 51pg, an energy star ally
Copyright @1984-98, award software, inc. Asus p2b bios revision 1012
Pentium iii 450mhz processor
Memory test : 524288k ok

Award plug and play bios extension v1. 0a(this is the point where my computer freezes and goes no further, i can't even boot from a floppy). I have tried various memory configurations and they all seem to detect ok. This same problem occurred on a asus p299 motherboard. I have tried installing a different cd rom, 3 1/2 floppy, etc. The only thing i haven't tried is a new cpu and/or hard drive (10gb fujitsu with win xp home installed). Twice the computer has gone further and actually booted up and acts normal, but 95% of the time it won't even boot! What should i replace next? It seems like it is a controller problem!

Computer Only Freezes When Watching A Video

Any time i watch a video (blu-ray, dvd, internet video, divx from any hard drive), my computer will freeze. Sometimes 5mins into watching, other times a lot longer. I have world of warcraft installed on a secondary hdd in raid 0 and i can run that all day with out any issues. I have checked to see if anything is scalding hot inside the comp, but nothing is. Is it memory? Hdd? Video cards?

Things i have tried: memory tests. All say their "fine"; smartcheck don't get me started on that program as it is very user un-friendly

Start Menu, Computer Freezes

Problem description: on click of start menu in windows xp, the lower half of the menu shows (programs, documents, run, shut down, etc), but the top half (i have 6 shortcuts) appears blank, and the entire operating system is temporarily frozen for about 20 seconds. During this frozen period, system will not respond to anything. After 20 seconds, the top half of the start menu appears ok, and everything is back to normal.

Occurrence: occurs occasionally; mostly after long period of not clicking on start menu. I use my computer about 10 hours each day, and this start menu issue happens about 5- 10 times. What i've done to solve this: downloaded winboost, reduced registry's default start-menu delay value, but this doesn't appear to be the issue.

Computer Freezes, Then Long Beep

Often when i boot my computer, usualy the first time in the day or whatever, after 10-20-30 minutes of use it will act a little bit funny. First of all, when i right click the desktop, the menu will only half appear. Sort of semi transparent. Then a few seconds later, everything freezes, and i get a long beep until i restart. Then everything seems fine again?

Im thinking it could be a power-supply issue. Im pushing it a little bit with 380w and my set up i feel, but does anyone have any other ideas? What could the long beep mean? I also think it could be dodgy ram. Ill give more details if needs be, i just thought i'd post in case anyone had some ideas.

5.1 Sound Card Freezes Computer

I just bought myself this sweex 5. 1 soundcard to replace my onboard realtek soundcard (since that one doesn't support 5. 1). Allright, so i disable the old soundcard (realtek ac97), let windows install his version of the driver for my new card. Totally screwed up. Can't get in "configuration->system" anymore, it just hangs, and when i reboot the computer hangs during startup. So i restore last configuration and install from the disk that comes with the card. That worked better. No visual problems. However, now when i use the card (play a movie or mp3, any player) it plays for a few seconds and then stops and my computer hangs. ("Few seconds" differs from time to time, sometimes it even hangs when playing the welcome tune when i log on to windows)

This led me to believe that there is a resource problem. So i checked out my irq ports. Striking, it's on 11 but along with a lot of other things. Note that the old card also uses 11. I tried to change this for the new card but that seems not to be allowed by xp. I tried removing the acpi driver and replacing it for a "standard pc" one, but this led to a complete mess, and i was still not able to change irq's.

When Using Mouse Computer Beeps And Cursor Freezes

Its nothing to do with any program but like when im using my mouse i just get some beeps from the computer like 1beep, 2beeps, 1beep then my mouse will freeze and i either get movement back and its all ok or the cursor freezes but everything else is ok, i will give 2 examples

1. I was on the desktop, msn messenger was dl'ing and i just finished updating direct x. The folder with everything i extracted i highlighted and tried to move then i got those beeps and the cursor froze, but msn continued dl'ing and then completed! I reset and installed it, wasnt even corrupt or owt. 2. As i was filling out system specs in user cp now, i went to click on the privacy thing if i want others to see my specs and as i clicked i got the beeps but i got movement back, then a few mins later as i tried to scroll down same thing but im still going. Now as im writing this im running blend test on orthos and 50 mins so far. Also i have speedfan running. - Ram? Maybe a possiblity but surely orthos would have shown that by now?
- Cpu overheating? But idle im 25 degrees and right now under 100% load im 40 degrees
- Psu? Not enough power or something? But i aint got a powerhouse rig really. Any help is appreciated! And the beep happend again now! Also, i checked the manual if the beeps meant anything and nothing, but any beeps you get is when post, not in windows.

Computer Freezes On The Windows Loading Screen

I went to use my computer today and noticed that there was no sound. I checked all of the physical connections which seem fine and then rebooted. After rebooting the sound came back for a while but then gradually increased in static before failing again completely. I reinstalled the ac 97 drivers (it's an onboard soundcard for the asus a8n-sli mobo) to no avail. I also had the entire computer lock up twice and reboot itself while trying to fix the sound. A few reboots later the operating system would run normally for about 2 seconds before completely locking for 2 and repeating this pattern. Task manager showed me that the cpu was alternating between ~ 5% usage to 100% when it would lock and back and forth in the 2 second pattern. I completely shut down the computer and when i attempted to boot back into windows, my computer now freezes on the windows loading screen. The bar will move across roughly 10 or so times before freezing completely! If i try a reset, it will not even detect the drive that windows is installed on! It will only reappear if i power the machine off and back on again!

I am able to boot into windows in safe mode, and i tried using system restore and msconfig to turn off all of the startup services and programs but i am still unable to do a normal boot into windows. I also tried doing a repair install of xp and the repair installation will get to the installing drivers step of the installation before abrubtly rebooting and attempting to continue the setup in an endless loop. I am currently running chkdsk /r in the windows recovery console but i'm somewhat doubting this will fix the problem.

Computer Freezes Starting Up, Shutting Down, Standby

I don't know why but my computer has started freezing when its started up, shutting down, or coming out of standby. At start up it doesn't make it to the post screen, everything turns on and then just sits there, nothing shows up on the display. Same thing with standby. On shutdown it will freeze at the "windows xp is shutting down" screen. I have to either hit the restart button to get it to start up and come out of standby or i have to hold the power button for 4 secs to get it to shutdown. I didn't have these problems till about 1 week ago when i received my dell 2407wfp-hc, i doubt this would be the cause though.
