Reboots When Shutdown Is Complete
Replies: 13 | Post Date: 07-13-2007, 04:14 AM | User: Peg | Forums: forums.techpowerup.comWhen i go to shutdown on my comp it goes to shutdown then as it has finished shutting down it automatically reboots. Have tried unchecking automatic restart in system properties to no avail, have heard that a new graphics card could be a prob but not too sure about that.

Error: Format Could Not Complete
I got a cheap 250gb hdd, western digital + sata card (altogether it cost me less than a 250gb ide). The card is a silicon image 3112a, it doesn't seem to have any trouble, and i got the latest drivers for it just to be sure. I have this strange problem, i try to format the drive with ntfs, and everytime i try it reports back with an error, i've tried various cloning/partitioning utilities (pqmagic, gdisk, standard format commands) all of them report an error "format could not complete" etc. Here's the funny thing: fat32 works fine, i can format a fat32 drive up to 199. Something gb. At the moment it's still in fat32 format, and i've done read speed tests, and they're fine. But for some reason i can't make it ntfs, even when i try the 'convert g:/fs:ntfs' command in dos it reports errors, needless to say, it's p*ssing me right off. My o/s is xp service pack 2, and i've had drives over 200gb in my pc before without any problems, it's just this drive, maybe its a physical hardware issue, disc sectors?

Complete Headphone System
Need complete headphone system for games, music, movies, everything. My sound-card is giving me nothing but trouble (static in games, but not (to my knowledge) in anything else). The sound sucks anyway. For a while i used on-board optical to the headphone output of my receiver, but that doesn't allow for positional audio - still, that's the best sounding it's ever been. If i need separate solutions for music and games, that's fine, but i need to know. I currently have a pair of sennheiser hd595s, and plan to get a pair of hd600s or hd650s (opinions?). For music, i want good, accurate sound. I would like some closed phones as well, for games. Maybe some audio-technica ath-a700s. For games, i'm more interested in crisp, powerful sound. It might be nice to have a set of speakers as well, but it's not a priority. I'm looking for suggestions for products (headphones, amps, dacs, soundcards, speakers, etc. ) That would suit me, as well as suggestions for what programs and settings to use to ensure the most true-to-the-source listening experience.

Computer Shutdown
I have a intel 850gb mobo and i formatted my hdd 2x thinking it was a bad install. When i hit start, shudown, not restart the computer goes thru the powering down phrase i hear the familiar click of the hdd whichs turns it off and bam, the hdd is off but the mobo and fans including cpu are still on. I replaced the power supply to no avail. I have to hit the reset button then the power button to quickly too turn off computer. Strange, im thinking the mobo is not sending the signal to the power supply commanding it to turn off. My hdd is new and was working finr, i like to reformat my hdd 2x a year to clean off the mess.

Pata Hdd Complete Failure
First my new system dies, and then my old system decides to go and kill itself aswell. Ok, this time its an old pata hdd that something went wrong with (i did this to it). What happend? Well, i had a nasty virus and had to get a real "tool" for the job. A program that use dod* method to erase everything from the harddrive. Let's just say something went wrong on the way, and now it's competely unreadable. So i got my hands on some seagate tools, and i really don't have a clue what to do with it. There is something so wrong it can't update the mbr of the drive. Shall i call it even and throw it away, or is there anything i can do?

Computer Freezes ( Will Not Complete Post )
During the post, the computer makes a single beep(that is normal), it checks the video and memory, then the following:
Award modular bios v4. 51pg, an energy star ally
Copyright @1984-98, award software, inc. Asus p2b bios revision 1012
Pentium iii 450mhz processor
Memory test : 524288k ok
Award plug and play bios extension v1. 0a(this is the point where my computer freezes and goes no further, i can't even boot from a floppy). I have tried various memory configurations and they all seem to detect ok. This same problem occurred on a asus p299 motherboard. I have tried installing a different cd rom, 3 1/2 floppy, etc. The only thing i haven't tried is a new cpu and/or hard drive (10gb fujitsu with win xp home installed). Twice the computer has gone further and actually booted up and acts normal, but 95% of the time it won't even boot! What should i replace next? It seems like it is a controller problem!

Format Did Not Complete Successfully - Error
I got a new hard disk and i tried to format it but the error came up after i tried to format it within windows xp (using computer management, disk manager, etc). I am trying to install the disk on a gateway e-4000 series computer. The new hard drive is an internal hitachi 160 gb drive (brand spanking new). I have tried a format both through the operating system and through the bios (more help on this?; Details below), both did not complete. I tried a quick format, that failed also. As soon as the format got to 99% it gave me the error message "the format did not complete successfully". I also tried using the disk management disk that came with the drive but that wasn't successful either. Any ideas on what it can be? A local security policy? I am logged in as administrator btw. The bios date is 8/17/02 11:50:48 version 08. 00. 05. Any help with this would be great! I have had a similar problem on a compaq computer but never on one that i built myself.

How To Get Complete Speed From Broadband Connection ?
How to get complete speed from bsnl broadband connection?
Answer:- your isp, controls your broadband speed. Depending on how much you are paying ie: what package you have purchased, determines your broadband speed. You want more speed, you will have to upgrade your service plan to accommodate your need for speed.

Computer Shutdown Randomly
I built my computer a few years ago and have had no problems (p4). Today it decided to shutdown randomly. I tried rebooting but it would turn on like it was going to start but bios would not post and it would shut down after about 5 seconds. My first inclination was that it was a failing power supply. Replaced that without any luck. The odd thing is that when i plug in both power components from the ps to the mobo it turns on and after five seconds turns off;
Yet, when i do not have the 12v 4pin plugged in, the computer stays running, although it does not load windows. I checked the ram, light on mobo is on, nothing smells fried, i'm hoping it is not the mobo.

Pc Shutdown - Buzzing Noises
Recently my computer has been randomly shutting itself down. Immidiatly after the shutdown a loud buzzing/beeping noise occurs from the front of the pc. My computer is custom made from the internet, and so i dont know who to contact. The part making the noise is a small black circular object, about the size of a 10c piece. Its connected to my motherboard by a black/red wire. I believe the wire goes next to the wires for my on/off, reset, and on & working lights. I replaced my hard drive as my university technician told me my hd was seizing, however that isnt the problem. Any ideas suggestions to my problem? Or could someone tell me what this noisey black thing is! And how can i fix it!

Computer Does Not Turn Off After Shutdown ?
I have an old opteron desktop that i will be using as a home server. The issue i've been having for the past few months is that it will not physically turn off after the os finishes shutting down. It used to, when i was using it as my main desktop, so i have no idea what has changed. What i have tried:
Windows 7 professional x64
Windows server 2008 r2 x64
Windows xp professional sp2
Reset bios
Install nvidia chipset drivers from manufacturer cd
Windows xp sp3
Ubuntu 7. 10
Flash bios to 4/06/2006 from 3/29/2006
Things i have tried since posting:
Unplug hard drives, boot ubuntu livecd, halt
In all of the operating systems i have tried, none can successfully turn off the computer. The only indication that the computer is supposed to have shut off is that i hear something turn off (hard drive maybe), and then all power would normally be cut, but now that sound doesn't happen in xp after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried disabling usb power suspend in server 2008, with no effect. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Edit: the os's shutdown screen remains on the display after it "shuts down". Specs:
Amd opteron 144 1. 8ghz
Dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d (modded to sli-d)
3gb ddr-400
Two geforce 7600 gt (one is out of the machine right now)
Single 160gb ide hard drive
Single 320gb sata2 hard drive

Pc Reboot When Set To Shutdown
I have a hp dc5700 and i just installed a nvidia 8400 pci. When i shutdown the pc it restarts. I tested without the card and the on board video works fine and the computer shuts down properly. Tried reinstalling the drivers and un-checking automatic reboot to see if it was blue screening, but nothing. There are no errors in the log and the pc works fine. I am leaning toward hardware (either the motherboard or video card). Any suggestions?

No Complete Boot, No Beep, Or Monitor Signal
The symptoms for my pc are as follows:
1. Pc receives power (as indicated by fan and powersupply light)
2. Pc does not output signal to monitor (verified functioning monitor and cable). 3. Analog, laser-mouse does not receive power consistently from pc. Laser-light turns on for a fraction of a second upon connecting the mouse to the pc, but then remains off after the mouse is firmly fixed into analog mouse-port. 4. Usb, laser-mouse does receive power from pc when plugged into usb port. 5. Pc does not make any beeping sounds whatsoever upon attempted boot. My request: please advise as to what troubleshooting methods i could use. Do these clues provide any insight into what may be wrong with the pc already?

Manually Shutdown A Hdd Through Software
I was wondering if there exists software to manually shutdown a hdd. I have one that i don't use all the time and tends to get hot, so i would like it to rest untill i need it, maybe also to safe power and extend lifetime of the drive. A google search doesn't seem to get me to usefull info.

Pc Takes A Very Long Time To Complete The Boot Up Sequence
My daughter has a dell inspiron 1150 laptop which seems to have some sort of memory conflict of sort. It takes a very long time to complete the boot-up sequence and then, for no apparent reason simply slow down to a halt when opening a program (microsoft word, for example). The fan starts working overtime and processing performance slows to a halt. The task manager shows that most of the resources are being consumed by the system idle process. I have run spybot and adaware and mcafee anti-virus and nothing one turns turns up any problems. Any suggestions as to where to look next?

Windows Has Been Shutdown To Prevent Damage To Your Computer
When i'm installing from my windows xp disk the initial blue screen comes up saying it's loading all the stuff from the cd basically and then i get the error message as follows:-
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer, press f8 and select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information:
*** Stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08)
*** Pci.sys - address f748e0bf base at f7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c
I have no idea what would cause this. I'm over-clocking my cpu some some bios settings are changed, could setting them back to defaults solve this issue? It doesn't really make sense to me. Please, i'd be grateful for any advice.

Computer Idle Mode - Which Is Better Shutdown Or Standby ?
Since shutdown takes huge power while start up and shut downing the system and standby also consumes power. For better power usage. I want suggestion on shutdown and standby. Depending upon the time that computer sits idle. (i.e if computer is idle for 1 hr it is better to shutdown.

Can A Hardware Button Utilize The Software Shutdown In Windows?
Can you wire a button into a computer (through serial, mobo jumpers, whatever) with a suitable utility so that the button doesn't do a hard powerdown (atx style) but instead uses the windows shutdown?
What would be even more convinient is if the same button could be used for power on / shutdown, but i'm not sure if that is possible. I guess the easiest solution is if there is a utility that lets the atx power on/off button access the windows shutdown sequence. Is there?
Does anyone understand what i'm asking, and does anyone have any suggestions?

Power Issue On Shutdown, Fans Do Not Stop, Led Flicker
Just put together a new machine, but using an old antec case and 350w psu (antec sl350s) and some other old hardware. First i started just plugging in the mobo with ram and heatsink (so, no peripherals connected, not even hd or the video card) and i notice that when i power down by holding down the front power button, the cpu fan stops, but the case and psu fans keep going! I have to switch off using the psu switch to shut everything down. Well, that's weird, but i still move on. However, with all the new hardware plugged in, the problem gets worse. Now when i switch off using the front power button:the case and psu fan are still onthe power led is off, but the hd led starts flickering very rapidlythe floppy drive starts grinding loudly and angrily; leave the system in this state, and the grinding dies down (but never goes away), then comes back after a few minutes, although i haven't done anything (the box is just sitting there)
The real problem is, the system does not boot after that! If i turn off the psu switch, then turn it back on, the clicking/flickering comes back. Pushing the front power button makes the cpu fan jerk, but it does not start on and the system does not start booting. But if i wait a few minutes with the psu switched off, i can boot up after that. This need to wait for a while is bothering me. What could be going wrong? Are these symptoms of a faulty power supply? How should i proceed diagnosing this?
So to conclude, my system goes into this weird twisted state where hd led flickers and floppy clicks at about the same rate and the power/reset button do nothing. The state is reachable if i power down using the front power button, or if i flip the psu switch off and back on after that (but if i wait for a few minutes before switching it back on, then fans do not come back on and i can boot just fine). My system (items marked "new" are the stuff i just bought, the rest is components that have been working for at least a few months):
Cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2. 60ghz dual-core (new)
Cpu heatsink/fan: noctua nh-c12p cpu cooler (new)
Motherboard: asus m2n-sli (new)
Ram: 2 x 1024mb ocz platinum revision-2 pc6400 ddr2 800mhz dual channel (new)
Video card: evga geforce 6200 256mb ddr2 pci video card (only bought it because mobo doesn't have on-board video, dang) (new)
Psu: 350w antec sl350s
Hard drive: 160gb sata 3. 0gb/s samsung spinpoint
Other peripherals: promise 2-port sata 3. 0gb/s raid controller card
Case: antec slk3700-bqe
Case fan: some 120mm antec fan that came with the case

Pc Reboots
So i got my new power supply. 550w corsair. I spent all night cleaning out my pc and getting everything back into it. I installed windows, grabbed all my data off of my hd, and then reinstaled windows on to the hard drive that i had been using after a clean reformat. I proceeded to install my other hdd so i'd be running 2 hard drives in non raid mode. One for media and one for programs and such. Well i seem to be having random reboots. It did it while i was reformatting the smaller hd, then it did it again while i was trying to run windows update. It was in the middle of updating. Boom shuts off. After it rebooted. It did it almost immidately. These arent total hangs, the thing just reboots. I'm thinking motherboard. If it is. It would almost make sense to get a new system but that will be more expensive than getting a new mobo, even if it is 939. Sound like a mobo problem?
