Hard Drive I/o Error

I recently started to do some upgrades to my dell 1720 laptop. Last year i got the latest 320 laptop hard drive available and it was working out pretty good. This year i decided to upgrade a little more. I got an intel 40 gb ssd and upgraded to 4gb of ram. I also got a second hard drive cage so i could run my os and programs off the ssd and keep the 320 for storing media and stuff. Everything on the ssd works perfectly and even the 320 works good wen it does work. But ever since i moved it to the second drive bay, reformatted it and everything and put all my data back onto it, i keep getting error messages every once in a while. It says it has encountered an i/o device error. Im not too sure what this means and i don't know how to fix it. The problem does temporarily fix itself wen i reboot but it only lasts for so long and ive found the second hard drive to be pretty unstable wen working with large files and such. Any help would be greatly appreciated so i can finally get my machine working fully again. Ive been stuck using an external hard drive for most of my files for now so i need to get this fixed.

Hard Drive Smart Error

I just got the smart error when booting 2 days ago on my wd800bb-22jhco 80gb ide drive. I have 2 other 120gb drives but no room to save all my music and movies that are on the failing drive. I am going to be getting a 500gb in a few weeks. What is the best thing i can do to prolong my files till i get a new drive? Would unplugging it help or wouild that cause it to fail faster?

External Hard Drive Error

Pc: dell dimension 4400
Os: win xp home
External hard drive: maxtor one touch 250

Bought in march, worked fine until two weeks ago. I turned off my computer for the night, turned it on in the morning and received these messages:

**Not accessible, the parameter is incorrect**
**The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error. **

The drive icon does show, the drivers , etc are all there and windows tells me they are operating fine. I have already spoken with maxtor and they were absolutely of no help. Other than wanting to reformat the hard drive . Which is out of the question. (I have 5 years of work stored in that hd, personal, legal and business) and must find a way to retrieve it. (Will not make personal comments about their support or policies. ) Grrrrrrrr. I have spoken to teckie types and tried several suggestions. None helped so far. I'm desperate, and would appreciate any expertise. And, if someone knows of an inexpensive recovery program. The data is all there, it was not deleted. I simply can not unlock the door.

Hard Drive Failure - Unknown Error

When vista loads, it gives me a message telling me one of my hard drives need to be checked for consistency. If i let it run, it either freezes, or aborts with some kind of unknown error at some point (happens at different points in the process, randomly). When i finish booting into vista, the hard drive is there, but it needs to be formatted before it can be used. If i keep letting chkdsk run is there a chance it may be able to repair whatever the issue is? It seems to get progressively further, but how far away from completing chkdsk it is, i have no idea. Edit: actually, i'm going download wd lifeguard tools, and see if i can scan the drive first, and see what it tell me. Will update when done.

Hard Drive Booting Problem - Unexpected I/o Error

First i installed my liquid cooling system for the first time and things went well, then later about 6+ months i decided to do a double radiator system (working pretty good with temps) but when i put everything back together, including a new sata 1 tb seagate harddrive. Now i can't boot up at all. It says there is an error coming from the hard drive and now it says there is another error saying it can't boot up because of an unexpected i/o error. Btw my primary harddrive is on a ide cable while i have 2 other hardrives (including my 1 tb) installed. I tried alternating the ports. But nothing is working. Also the error is included when i try to reinstall windows vista.

Hp Laptop Stopped Working, Hard Drive Error

It was working fine and when i turned it on the screen wouldn't come up. I was finally able to get an error message that said the hard drive needs to be replaced. My hp laptop is only a year old. I want to know how much it would cost also if i could just buy a portable external hard drive for it, if that would help.

I ran diagnostics on my computer after it froze on the first screen when you switch the computer on (dell xps 430 vista (32 bit)) and i got the error code 2000-0142. From my search on the forums this says your hard drive is faulty and needs fixing. How much will this cost to get fixed? I'm thinking of taking it to the tech guys at pc world.

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Usb Flash Drive Error - This Drive Needs To Be Formatted

A friend of mine recently had her usb drive come up with an error. Whenever it is accessed it throws up an error "this drive needs to be formated". So we tried running chkdsk and even tried running restoration (http://www.Snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html) which i've tried on my father's hard drive before with excellent results. This time it just throws up a "unable to recognize" error. When i try to format it, we can only format a 8mb partition (out of 512mb) and even then it says "no" to that. I used the built in windows xp. Chkdsk cannot see it, says it is in raw format (which i assume means there is no partition). My next step is to try some specialized software made for flash drive recovery. There are important files on there that the owner would very much like back (however not important enough to justify large spending of money). A free-ware option would be fantastic.

Hard Disk Error Checking Utility

When i ran the windows xp sp2 hard disk error checking utility with the

"The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs

When i rebooted and ran the utility again with nothing else running i got
The same error message. Then i used the windows msconfig utility and
Disabled all startup programs. I then ran the utility and i got the same
Error message. When i ran the windows xp sp2 hard disk error checking utility with
"Automatically fix file system errors" box unchecked, the utility reported no

Master Hard Disk Error - Press F1 To Resume

I was told that this message could be the operating system as well as maybe a hard drive issue, is this right? I ran both western digital lifeguard tests on these two drives and it was the storage 500gb that had the bad sectors and not the raptor, which is where the os, and applications.could it still be possible that the storage disk #1 still shows the bad even though the bootup disk is the 74gb raptor? I would hate very much to replace the wrong defective drive. Well, heres the thing. I am at the library because something strange is going on, and my computer is hanging and not responding. I've been getting the black screen with hard disk error message, try to go to safe mode, then to command prompt, then to start windows normally, then to the start in last known settings that worked, but it all takes me back to the hard disk error message. Maybe once or twice i can get on to the desktop, but then it just hangs, or i can get as far as the welcome screen, then it hangs and hangs. I have two sata western digital hard drives. 74gb raptor for applications, and 500gb for storage. When i am doing anything on the computer, it's been hanging recently and i ran the wd data lifeguard utiliy, the "quick" and the "extended" test on drive 2 (500gb) which came back with bad sectors which it repaired, then showed healthy. The test on the raptor showed up as healthy as well. Thjs worked fine for a day and then i get this black screen with ". " Again. Before i left to come here to the library to post this, i called western digital and of course they told me it may be my windows operating system, since the utility showed them as healthy. He told me to hook up each drive to another computer to test. What? Another computer?

Well i do have an old antique compact with 256ram 1. 2 ghz amd cpu and is slower than ratsnot. If i were to test, i'd have to use to ide cables to each of the drives. The western digital guy told me that my winxp pro os could be the problem, so does this mean i will have to wipe the hard drives and reinstall windows, all the apps, hardware, drivers, all over again only to find out it is one of the hard drives?

Winxp pro/ q6600 intel core 2/ 3. 3gb ddr/msi p-35 platinum mobo/ geforce 8600gt

I O Error Usb Drive

I recently bought a sandisk cruzer micro 1gb flash drive. It refuses to work on my computer. I've dealt with sandisk's tech support - absolutely no help. I've lost the receipt and packaging (i just moved in to a new apartment), so i have no chance of being able to return it. Here's the scoop:

I plug it in, winxp detects it just fine and that blasted u3 software (which i've since removed) loads up. I go to copy a file.system hang. I wait. And wait. And wait. Eventually, the light on the drive goes out with my pc still holding it's ****. I unplug the drive. Screen goes blank (except for bg pic) and after a few seconds my desktop comes just as it would after a typical xp explorer crash - most of the open windows are now closed and there aren't too many icons in the tray. Here's the kicker (well, a few actually), i have a sandisk 256mb cruzer mini which works fine. I had a 1gb cruzer mini earlier this year (which i returned) which did the same thing the cruzer micro does now. I tried the thing on my gf's (who has a 2gb cruzer micro) computer and it works fine. Recently, i've been getting an error when i try to transfer files stating "the request could not be processed because of an i/o device error. " However, i am able to transfer files that are smaller than 1 mb. I've tried this plastic perturbation in fat and fat32. No luck. Just to avoid confusion, i have a 1gb sd card for my camera. Works fine. I even went out and bought one of those adapters that turns the card into a usb drive. Still works fine.amd athlon 3200+, msi mb kt6 delta series, via kt600 chipset. Bios and drivers are all most recent.

Hard Drive Enclosure That Supports A 2.5" Drive From Hp Cq70 Laptop

I need a a hard drive enclosure that supports a 2. 5" drive from my hp cq70 laptop; will any do?

Answer:- although the majority of pc end users buy 3. 5" based enclosures there are some excellent 2. 5" caddys around and the good thing about these is they don't require additional power. Mostly they can run with just the power from the usb port. I have bought a few 2. 5" enclosures and they are all pretty basic in both construction and build and heres a few i can recommend to you. The cit 25m2s 2. 5" sata external usb hard drive enclosure / black costs under 8 and is a great little enclosure. It takes around 5 minutes to put together and then its just a case of plugging into a spare usb port ( 2. 0 recommended ) and your good to go . It also comes with a leather carry case and all cables not bad for the price

Next theres the "icy box 2. 5 sata hdd case with usb 2. 0 interface and smart ap software, this is a awesome looking enclosure and its probably one of the best you can buy. The enclosure looks good and well made. And the software supplied will alert you if the drive gets too hot.

Dvd Rom Drive, Flash Hard Drive Slowing Data Transfer Speed

Issue a: when i put a cd/dvd into my dvd, the system (my computer/properties) recognizes the hardware, but it will not play. (Drive letter "d". )

Issue b: my computer will not recognize my data (flash?) Cards from my digital camcorder/camera. Issue c: my computer's hard drive (drive letter "c") once accepted my firewire uplink (1333). Now, my nle (pinnacle studio 9 plus) give the error message "drive c is not capable of capturing dv data", meaning it's date transfer rate is too slow. How can i fix these issues? Do i have to buy a new hard drive?

Hard Drive Access Slow, Not Due To Drive, But Files

Ok, this is a bizzare problem i have never seen, but there is a certain folder on my old machine's old 80gb western digital 8mb cache ide hdd, that when you go to open the folder the window will stop responding and it takes over a full minute to come back, but still it doesn't open. Then when you try again it will open just fine. I thought that perhaps if i copied all the files over to the new machine's 400gb sata drive (the sata is the primary and the ide is slave in this machine), that the issue would be resolved, but now it acts exactly the same way when you try to open that folder off of the sata drive.

Use Cd Drive Ide Cable To Connect Hard Drive To Mobo

Well, i'm assembling an old via computer with a 2700+ chip. I have a 40gb ide hard drive i want to connect. Right now, the cd drive is connected to the mobo with an ide cable. This same ide cable also has another female connector on it that would fit into my hard drive ide port. My question is whether i can just hook the drive right into this ide connector already on the cable that's connecting the cd drive to the mobo, or if i need to get a second individual ide cable and then connect the drive to the second ide port on my mobo. It would be much easier if i could just use this one ide cable to connect both to the same mobo port.

Error: Invalid Drive Designation

I've been putting together a pc and decided to do a full hard drive clean, it was some application off of "ultimate boot cd" (called wipedisk). Looking back, i don't know why i did it because it seems to have screwed up things really badly. I was having some trouble with the windows xp cd (had to reinstall due to new motherboard) and it kept defaulting to that annoying oem recovery partition (this is a hard drive from an hp pc). I just decided to wipe out the whole drive, but it seems the application i used removed the mbr and partition table as well, seemingly rendering fdisk completely useless. When is use fdisk or fdisk /mbr it tells me "invalid drive designation" and aborts, does anyone have any ideas on how to get this hd back up and running? The bios still recognizes the disk, and certain partitioning tools also see it. I just can't access the mbr any more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Xp Do Not Allocate Drive Letter For Hard Drive

I got a problem wit new setup, i installed old 40 gb hard drive into my new rig, bios detects it, win xp detects it but it wont allocate it a drive letter, when i go to disk manager only option i have is to delete partition, i cant do anything else. Will i need to convert it into ntfs to be able to use it? Both new hdd are ntfs and the old hd is fat32. 2 new hd's are sata, old drive ive setup on ide taking cable from cd/dvd drive, just to keep things simple. I think old 40gb hd is setup as slave. Will this make a diff? It comes up on bios as primary slave. Any ideas why i can access the data on it? Format or delete partition are not options, old hd has data i want.
