Bios Takes Long Time To Identify Dvd Drives On Ide 2

I recently updated my pc - new ram, new sata hard drive and a new case. I've put everything in the case and after a few issues, i got it running. I do seem to have some troubles with my cd/dvd drives though and i was wondering if anyone could give me some help. First, here's a rough overview of the important bits:

Msi 865pe neo2 pfisr motherboard
120gb ide hd - on ide1 as master
160gb sata hd - on "ide3"
1 dvd-rom drive - on ide2 as master
1 dvd writer - on id2 as slave

The trouble is that when i have the above setup, the bios takes a long time trying to identify my dvd drives on ide2. It must eventually give up and believe nothing is there. The hd's are fine, just no dvd drives. Now if i unplug the slave drive on ide2, the master drive works fine. I haven't tried putting the slave dvd as a master yet but i'll try that as the first thing when i get back. Is it possible to something blow a drive or ground it to my case? Something stupid like that?

Now lets say i get home and both dvd drives work separately but not together. Does anyone have any clue what else it could be? I've just moved the drives from one case to another so the jumpers are correct etc. The cable is also fine (tried it with a spare - same problem).

Pc Takes A Long Time To Boot Up

First: it takes from 20 minutes to 2 hours to boot up, i don't see anything in the monitor, but the fan in the power supply spins and the fan at top of the processor also works, only the red light of the hard disk turns on. I have tried with another hard disk that works fine in another pc, and it's the same, it takes forever to boot up. I have replace the power supply from 250 to 450 and i still have that problem. Second: after waiting that long for the pc to boot up, the cpu clock speed reads 733 mhz instead of 1700. I reset the jumper in the motherboard, to get the correct speed, but i have to do this everytime the computer has been off for a while. Are the two problems related? Is the motherboard bad? Once the pc boot ups, it works fine.

Windows Takes A Really Long Time To Start Up

Windows takes a really long time to start up, and when it does, it doesn't last long before the computer restarts. I went into the bios, and the cpu is running at 38*c, so it shouldn't be that. Also, i have a 500watt psu, so that shouldn't be it either, what's the problem?

Pc Takes A Very Long Time To Complete The Boot Up Sequence

My daughter has a dell inspiron 1150 laptop which seems to have some sort of memory conflict of sort. It takes a very long time to complete the boot-up sequence and then, for no apparent reason simply slow down to a halt when opening a program (microsoft word, for example). The fan starts working overtime and processing performance slows to a halt. The task manager shows that most of the resources are being consumed by the system idle process. I have run spybot and adaware and mcafee anti-virus and nothing one turns turns up any problems. Any suggestions as to where to look next?

Are there any difference in quality or speed?

For ide, i just need one ide plug to connect 2 drives to the mobo right?

For sata, it would need 2 sata plugs and it would take up 2 sata ports?

Copying Live Image To Hard Drive Takes Too Long

I lost gnome desktop of fc13beta so i have to re-install it on my desktop pc. Did all partitioning and formatting in advance via gparted live cd. I set up a 500 mb boot partition (ext3) for grub, a 14 gb root partition (ext4) and a 15 gb home partition (ext4). During installation, copying live image to the hard drive initially was fast but then the installation seems to stop 3/4 of the way through and everything is now frozen. I am waiting for installation to complete. By the way, i just saw an orange icon on the top bar but i cannot know what it says because the mouse is frozen at the moment. Please help me! Installation of fc used to be easy. This is the third time this evening i am having to re-install fc13 beta.

Scrolling Takes Much Time In Windows Explorer

Most notably on web pages, scrolling takes forever. One tick of my scroll wheel will take 3 seconds or more for a web page to refresh in the new position. It also happens when scrolling through windows explorer and when i open my start button > all programs menu. I havent noticed it on much else but i havent tried doing much else program-wise. I have run many instances of different web based avs thinking it was a virus. Kasperky online, trend micro house call and dr web cureit. All have come back clean so far. Have also run ad aware and spybot s&d with negative results. Tried a hijack this log on the auto parse page and it also returned clean. What else can i do to find a resolution to this?

Computer Freezes On Boot - Long Time To Load Windows

I was having issues with a game of mine hard locking my pc. The only way to get out of it was to hold down the power button and force the pc to power down, then boot back up. Trying to trouble shoot the game, this happened several times. Then, it started freezing on the memory test. It's not really freezing, though - if i leave it sit for a very long time ( 5 to ten minutes ), it will eventually boot into windows. Any ideas?

Asus P4p800 - Sata And Ide At Same Time

I have 2 hard drives and 2 optical running on the ide channels of my p4p800 board - the hard drives on primary, and the optical on secondary. I want to add a sata hard drive (74 gb raptor) to my configuration, and make it my boot drive. Obviously, to do so i would need to use the sata, primary ide, and secondary ide all at the same time. I've seen some conflicting information in different places, including here, so here's what i want to know. 1. Is it possible to run both ide and sata at the same time?

2. What quirks should i know about if i'm trying to do this? (I've heard of people having problems getting the sata drive to be the boot drive, for example)

3. Can i use both primary and secondary ide channels while using sata? I read on another forum somewhere that certain gigabyte models allow you to use primary ide or sata, but not both at the same time; i want to make sure that won't be a problem with my asus board. 4. If i can't run all my sata and ide devices at once directly through the mobo, will a controller card allow me to? If so, what would you recommend?

Can I Run Both Ide & Sata Internal Harddrives At Same Time ?

My main hard drive is an sata drive; however, i have an extra internal 200 gig 7200rpm ide drive that i'd like to use as a backup drive. Can i run them both?

I want them both installed but i only want to boot off the sata and simply have the ide as a spare drive; does running both require that you boot from the ide? Is it simply as easy as selecting the boot device in the bios?

Gets A Single Long Bios Beep, Repeating Every 5 Sec

Everything is installed, hdd, memory, optical drives, processor, ect, and i try to start it up and everything seems to have power, but i just get a bios beeps. Its an msi board and i already checked the memory and that seems to be good, have to check the video card, and processor still, and psu and mobo, but that will just be ruled out by the time everything else is checked. Anyways, it has phoenix bios and this_chart has the codes for the beeps, but all i get is one single long beep, repeating every like 5 or so seconds, no boot up screen or anything.

Bios Beeping, A Long Beep Followed By Two Short Beeps

I am receiving the bios beeping of a long beep followed by two short beeps. According to every source that i have consulted about this code, it means that there is a problem with the video card. I have been using this card for a year now and it has functioned just fine up to this point. Nevertheless, i have reseated it several times to no avail. Next, i tried using a brand new video card and received the same error. I can therefore speculate that my issue isn't with the card, but with another component. I am not sure how to tell whether it is the motherboard or the power supply. I am therefore seeking advice on how to tell. At the time the problem began, i was playing stepmania, a dance dance revolution computer emulation program. The game itself can be played on very low-end systems with little or no problem, so i would not expect that it would have over-heated anything. During my gameplay, the computer crashed and restarted itself. After the computer restarted itself, it began booting windows. At the black windows xp screen with the bar that goes across the screen multiple times until going to the user accounts screen, the computer froze and i was forced to reboot the computer manually. From this point forward, the bios began giving the beeps and would not allow the computer to turn on again. I am currently using an enermax 600w psu sli power supply. It has never given me an issue since the day i bought it, nor given me a reason to believe that it was failing. I have connected the video card to the two power connectors with the provided power splitting cable. I have also plugged in the extra sli video card power cable on the motherboard even though i am not using sli. Because of these things, i would certainly hope that the power supply is not causing the issue. I am using an asus a8n-sli nforce4 ultra, pcie socket 939 motherboard. When powered up, the power supply led indicator shines green. All fans turn on, including that of the video card. All pieces of my computer, with the exception of the hard drives and cd drives, were purchased at the same time. I tested the video problem with a brand new bfg geforce 7950 gt 512mb pcie w/dual dvi/hdtv card as well. I am not sure if this is related, but i was having some trouble with my cd drives recognizing some media prior to the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what could be the issue behind this system failure? Also i have tried resetting the bios cmos as well. In case there is use in this information, here is a list of all the parts:-

Computer specifications:

Asus a8n-sli nforce4 ultra, pcie socket 939 motherboard
Ocz 2048mb pc3200 ddr 400mhz el platinum (2 x 1024)
Amd athlon 64 x2 4200+ socket 939 (manchester)
Enermax 600w psu sli / server ready, pfc
Evga geforce 7900 gtx 512mb pcie w/dual dvi

Long Boot Times With Dvd Drive

My machine takes very long to boot. It sits @ that windows-knight-rider screen and the blue line is crossing about 10-12 times before anything happens. Yesterday i had to disconnect my dvd to connect my reserve hdd and see. It boots after 3 or 4 times of that line passing. Is that coz i got a bad driver or bad firmware there. Don't know if driver makes difference coz i think windows got 1 generic and it don't affect my secondary dvd drive. Any suggestions?

Ide / Pata Dvd On A Pc

I am building a new pc that is in a 2u rack mounted case. It's in a small rack that has two routers and two switches hung in it as well. I'm studying for my ccna and wanted a lab that i didn't have to set up and tear down every time i wanted to work with it. The case came with a slot only for a slim dvd and not a full size one. I bought the slim dvd and it's exactly what would go into a laptop. All the illustrations show that the connector is an ide/pata type. I cannot find a cable that will connect this to my mobo's ide or sata connectors. Can anybody tell me how to connect to this drive to either an ide or sata connector?

Ide Dvd-rw Drive Issue

I have two optical drives on ide (a single cable, a second cable is not an option). These same two drives were connected in exactly the same way in an old computer and working fine. Now the issue. When reading or writing anything on the dvd-rw drive (the other's a cd-rw), the computer will lag. The cursor will become jumpy and and video playing will grind to a halt for the duration of the activity. The other drive works perfectly. When the other drive is in its own it runs perfectly still, and when the dvd drive is on its own it still runs badly. I've tried both plugs on the ide cable when using only the dvd drive, both with the same results. As men tioned, the drive worked perfectly normally on my old computer and it works perfectly other than the lag. No read/write issues otherwise.

Slow Format Time For Usb Flash Drives

Ever since i started using vista, one of the big annoyances i've had is the really slow format time for usb flash drives, usb / firewire connected hard drives and flash cards (sd cards, memory sticks, compact flash cards in respective usb card readers). I've been experiencing this on three different pc's running different versions of vista. Pc1 is running vista business w/ sp1. It's a dell w/ a q6600, 2gb of ram and a 320gb sata hard drive. Pc2 is running vista home premium w/ sp1. Has an asus a8n-sli deluxe, athlon 3500+, 2gb of ram and a 120gb sata hard drive. Pc3 is running vista ultimate x64 w/ sp1. Asus p5q-em, q6600, 8gb of ram, 300gb velociraptor + 150gb raptor. I've tried formatting usb flash drives, usb / firewire connected hard drives and flash cards (in usb card readers) on all three pcs. Tried on pc1 and pc2 before and after sp1 was installed and on the 3rd computer only after sp1 was installed. In all cases, formatting these devices takes forever. With pc2 and 3 running windows xp, formatting these devices was extremely fast. In all cases, i did not choose the quick format. Anyone know of a fix for this?

Areca 1680ix Time Out Error With Ssd Drives

I recently purchased and installed an areca 1680ix-12 raid controller on my new system. I am using an asus p6t deluxe v2 with a core i7 920 processor & 12gigs of kingston hyperx. I have 5 super talent ssd’s (ftm16gl25h) configured in a raid 5 on the areca. I was able to create and build the array without any trouble. I started the win7 installation and when prompted installed the storport driver for the areca. I’m using the win7 x64 driver from the areca website. Everything started fine. However, the installation eventually error out during the "expanding files" stage. Somewhere around 29%. I took a look at the event viewer on the areca and i noticed that the ssd drives were the issue. It showed that the ssd’s encountered a "time out error". The array was still in a "normal" not "degraded" state. Thinking that something must have gone wrong along the way. I deleted the array, rebuilt it again and attempted to reinstall win7. The same thing happened. The install errored out again. This time it got to 13% before failing. Checked the logsame thingtime out error on the drives. So, i decided to do some further testing. I have a 4 disk san running seagate sas mechanical drives. I connected it to the areca and installed win7 without any issues. I’ve been running the system like this for a week and it’s stable. For another test i booted the computer from the san. Went into the disk manager and selected the earlier created ssd raid 5 array. I formatted it and then attempted to transfer a large file to it. The transfer started fine but eventually locked up my computer. Booted my netbook, went into the areca controllers http interface, checked the event viewer and sure enoughtime out errors on the ssd drives again. Are there known issues with ssd’s on areca raid controllers?

I’ve been researching the heck out of this situation and i can't find any. I've updated all the firmware files on the controller as well as the bios on the mother board. Also, i checked the firmware version in the ssd’s and it's the current one listed on the super talent website. I've tweaked every setting i can possibly think of the on the controller to no avail. Help please?

Oh yea, here's another fun fact, the ssd’s run fine on the mother boards ich10r controller in a raid 5 array. Now if i could just get them to work on the areca!

New Motherboard Is Not Detecting Ide Drives

Ive bought a new system with the evga sli 680i 122-ck-nf68 motherboard. The rom drives, psu, and hard drives are older. Psu is a few months old. Hard drive is a few years. I have an ide cable connecting to a hard drive and dvd burner. The hard drive is on the master and set for cable detection. The burner is on the slave and set for cable detection. They both are getting power. When the motherboard boots it scans for ide and sata devices to find nothing. I go into bios to try loading the drives there. No luck. I have switched the ide cable with an old one, no luck. And from what i can tell, none of the pins are bent.

Ide Drives In Sata Only Computer

I've got a couple ide hard drives and i would like to continue using them for storage rather then just letting them sit around unused. However my current computer doesn't have any ide ports or molex power connectors. I've been looking around for items that would allow me to continue use the drives however i'm having trouble finding anything that actually looks reliable. While full speed usage would be nice, i would be happy just so long as i can find a way to use them. So i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to go about this without using poorly designed parts that are more likely to destroy the drives then let me continue using them.
