Chkdsk Unknown Error Raid Volume
Replies: 1 | Post Date: 05-05-2009, 08:43 PM | User: Gersson | Forums: hardforum.com@ raid 6 volume on areca 1222 controller: i have some files and directories i can't delete, move because they are corrupted. I asked windows to perform a full check on this storage volume but it always ends with "unknown error" after having supposedly found and deleted some orphan files. What are my options? I have an ass load of large files on this array and no extra space to move and rebuild. Side note:- i know everyone can have different experiences but i will not forgive seagate for the 1. 5 tb hdds fiasco. Cursed be the day i decided to go with these drives for my array. I've had 4 of them spaz-out or die on me with different controllers, pcs.

Chkdsk Volume Is Dirty
Since last night (because of improper shut down), everytime i get onto the computer it runs the chkdsk. While it does it says. "Checking file system on c: the type of the file system is ntfs the volume is dirty". It also says a bunch of other things but most of which disappears before i can read it. Once i am on i get an error message stating. "The file or directory c: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility". Ok, so i click onto start and then onto run and type in chkdsk c: /f to run chkdsk and fix any system errors. It runs. I get a prompt that says something about the disk being locked and asks if i want to run the chkdsk the next time i restart.
I say yes and restart my pc. Again the pc runs the chkdsk and again it says. "Checking file system on c: the type of the file system is ntfs the volume is dirty". And once i am on i still get the same error message. "The file or directory c: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility". I also ran chkdsk c: /r which took longer as it was a 5 step process. It did not help either. I ran adaware, disk clean-up, defrag. Nothing helps. I search the help section and found an article regarding detecting and repairing disk errors. It told me to open my computer, click properties, under error checking click check now. Then select scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. I did all this, went through the whole process and it did not help either.
I do not know what else to do. I have googled for info and followed as much as i could. The only thing i have read about and did not try is the recovery thing. I don't know how to and do not feel safe fiddling without some sort of guidance. Can you help? If you can, please remember to talk in itty bitty steps as i am like a kindergartner when it comes to this. All of the items i did up until this point were tips that i found on the microsoft website and other sites.

Hard Drive Failure - Unknown Error
When vista loads, it gives me a message telling me one of my hard drives need to be checked for consistency. If i let it run, it either freezes, or aborts with some kind of unknown error at some point (happens at different points in the process, randomly). When i finish booting into vista, the hard drive is there, but it needs to be formatted before it can be used. If i keep letting chkdsk run is there a chance it may be able to repair whatever the issue is? It seems to get progressively further, but how far away from completing chkdsk it is, i have no idea. Edit: actually, i'm going download wd lifeguard tools, and see if i can scan the drive first, and see what it tell me. Will update when done.

Today i purchased a 250gig seagate sata 7200. 9 drive and after formatting and installing windows i realized a clicking sound, after looking into it with other threads i thought it was normal, then i got the blue screen of death with a message saying "stop: d0000144 unknown hard error", now im concerned since i only just got this drive. Volume Bitmap Error (mft)
Just yesterday i had a powercut where i live but the ups system took over and did a force shutdown. Unfortunately i think the force shutdown damaged my c: and i keep getting a reoccurring volume bitmap error. I have read up about this but i can't seem to fix it. My harddrive is a 160gb seagate. I did reformat c: and reinstalled windows today but to no avail, the error still occurs. I have run chkdsk at startup to repair the problem, but when windows loads and i run a chkdsk scan on c: in read-only mode the error keeps on coming up. It did say it had something to do with the mft, how would i fix this?
I have partition magic 8. 0 and that isnt reporting any problems with any of the partitions. This problem needs to be fixed because after sometime the pc randomly becomes unstable and i cannot access its resources or anything without hard resetting it.

Windows Boot Error - Unmountable Boot Volume
I have had my new system up and running for about 5 weeks now with now problems. So today i was on my computer and all of a sudden it freezes. Nothing is responding so i just reset the power. Once i reset the power i get to the logon screen, i logon and then i get a blue screen saying windows has detected a problem and has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer the under it, it says, unmountable_boot_volume. So i thought my grphix card might have overheated so i try rebooting again about several times with no luck. I try booting with safe mode but still freezes. After about 2 hrs i come back and nothing has changed. Any 1 know any solutions?

Raid 0 Error
On bootup, when the list of bootable devices flashes on screen, one of my hard drives (part of a two disk raid 0) has "error" next to it. What could be the problem? It cant be too serious, considering that my computer is still running perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas of possible issues/solutions? Any hard drive diagnostic software i can try?

Strange Raid 0 Error
While hot swapping one archive drive for another, the intel matrix storage console said that an error occurred and to back up my data from the raid 0 array. I'm guessing the raid portion of the controller doesn't take kindly to drive swapping or i bumped the sata/power line. Ich10r
Ports 0-1 are the raid 0. The hot swapping occurred on port 2. The os boots fine, chkdsk seen nothing wrong and volume verification returned zero errors. So i set the second drive in the array back to normal.

An Error Occurred(0) On Raid Controller
I have an evga x58 motherboard and have two wd caviar blacks set up in raid 0 as my boot drive, running windows 7 rc. They're connected to the intel 1ch10r raid controller. So i'm booting up and getting "an error occurred(0)" on one of the drives on the boot-up status screen. Man, i just love these obscure and totally unhelpful error messages. So an error occurred; that's nice. What the *** do i do about it?
After some searching, i found intel matrix storage manager software available for download on intel's site. There's supposed to be an option in the software to check the drives and "mark as normal. " There is a version of storage manager that supports vista 64, so i figure maybe it's good for win7 also. However, when i start to install it, i get a warning screen that says that after installing its drivers, they cannot be un-installed. Well, isn't that special. What if those drivers it installs are not what i need, and totally bork my system?
So here i sit, paralyzed as to what action to take next. I frickin' hate technology sometimes. Anybody know what to do about this particular problem?

Raid 6 + 2 Failed Drives + Read Error On One Drive
Well just as the title says, i have a server with an areca 1280ml and 14 x 1. 5 tb seagate hard drives. I recently suffered the simultaneous loss of 2 drives followed by one hard drive giving read errors. As a result, rebuilding the array is impossible.could anyone give me any suggestions to recover the array?
Should i contact a data recovery company to fix that hard drive and proceed with a rebuild?

Western Digital Time Limited Error Recovery (tler) With Raid
Just wanted to write up my experiences with my raid problems. I have four of the western digital caviar se16 500 gb wd5000aaks 16 mb sata-ii 300 mb/s hard drive models. Previously i had them configured in a 2. 0 tb (1. 5 tb usable) array on my silicon image 3114 pci sata-i 150 mb/s raid 0, 1, 5 onboard controller with firmware 5. 4. 03. One day i lost came home to find that 3 drivers dropped out of the array and only 1 drive was left and that the array was destroyed. Luckily the array was used mostly for archive storage for videos that i routinely backed up to dvd's so i didn't lose any data. (I presume that only the one drive that was left in the array was the cause of the problem, timing out too long while doing error recovery on a bad sector, that actually caused the other 3 drives from being dropped, instead of vice versa as it should have happened. )
None of the utilities that silicon image provides were able to restore the array from the other 3 drives, even though the drives that dropped should have been able to be brought online as an array and the single drive left in the array should have been able to be brought back in and rebuilt. I e-mailed the vendor with a complete case report and all details but nobody responded. An understandable experience with a second-rate foreign vendor that mostly supplies motherboard manufacturers with crappy software raid chips. (The array while it was operational for many months was dog slow because it was software raid5 and the parity calculations were interrupting the cpu constantly on every write making my system slow and unresponsive any time i would perform any extended writes to the array. Learned my lesson to never use silicon image pci based software raid5 and recommend against these chips now to everyone. )
After that experience i took my drives off the cheap silicon image controller and made a nvidia raid1 (mirror) array with 2 x 500 gb and then took the other two drives to be used for external storage for on-site and off-site storage drives. A few months back i came back home to find that one of the drives in the new array with an error status. After rebooting the system and re-adding the drive to the array everything worked fine without any errors. Last week the same thing happened again and the drive dropped from the array again. I re-added it and no errors were found and the array is running again. Read more at the forum.

Chkdsk Equivalent For Mac
I am a windows tech, and it has fallen upon me to fix a mac mini for my church. It is not booting, and from the sounds of it, i suspect that either there is a bad cluster in a crucial location on the hard drive, or else the entire hard drive is failing. Normally, on a windows machine, i would run chkdsk to either fix the bad cluster or determine that it was time to buy a new hard drive. However, as far as i know, chkdsk only works for fat and ntfs partitions, and i think macs use a different formatting for their hard drives. Is there any utility built into mac os for checking the hard drive for problems? I have a mac os 9 cd, and also a mac os x cd. Since the computer won't boot, i think i am limited to running a utility from cd, or else removing the hard drive and hooking it up to a working computer and running the scans from there. Any thoughts? I know there's got to be an easy solution, but i just don't know it.

Hard Drive Problem / Chkdsk Issue
I have a 160gb western digital drive broken into 4 partitions. I have about 30gb of music on one partition (e). When i booted the computer, windows ran the chkdisk utility and started correcting some problems. Prior to that, i had no problems whatsoever with the drive. Well after chkdisk finished, a bunch of my music files won't open and some rar and zip files i have on another partition (f) seem to be corrupted and won't open. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?

Hard Drive Chkdsk Problem On Every Boot Up
What i mean by my drive "acting up" is that every time i reboot, it asks me do a chkdsk for this specific drive, there are always "corrupt" files that need to be deleted or realigned or w/e and it happens on every bootup. Recently, i've had some of my game folders disappear but when i click the shortcuts on my desktop, the games still work fine. It seems to me like the drive is dying (raptor 74gb - out of warranty), but it passes the smart test and has 0 errors in a wd diagnostics extended test. Error scan in hd tune 4. 01 shows nothing as well, but when i got to 'health', it says:
(05) reallocated sector count 199(current)/199(worst)/140(threshold)/3(data) - warning
(C4) reallocated event count 199/199/0/1 - warning
(C7) ultra dma crc error count 200/253/0/308 - warning
What does this mean? Is the drive dying or what?

Maxtor Hard Drive Chkdsk Errors
I have a 200 gb maxtor hard drive as a slave drive and recently i've done some reformatting on my c: drive, all is well after the installation of xp but i noticed chkdsk has detected errors on my maxtor drive, it went on for about 30 minutes. After xp started up, i checked on some of my files on the maxtor drive and most of the files had errors. For example, i have a mp3 song that would play but it contains parts from another song or it would just not play at all. This happened to the majority of mp3s i have on that drive. Also any applications dont open my pictures or word documents at all. So i deleted most of the defected files. But even after a week chkdsk detected my errors, i still have problems with new files i put in that drive. Things on the drive randomly disappear or become corrupt. This type of error i never encountered before. I tried the maxtor utilities but the test gave me pass on the drives, no errors according to it. I also did a virus scan, it found nothing. So what should i do?

Unknown System Instability
Recently i noticed my computer has been restarting itself randomly. It has always been stable and since the first time i oc'ed, i've ran orthos for 8hr+ without issues. I start orthos and what do you know, within the first minute, error occurs. Back to the bios, i turn off oc and try again with default everything. Orthos fails again. Must be ram right? I remove two sticks of ram (down to 2gb) and run memtest on it, passes for 5 cycles straight. Boot back into windows, orthos fails. So this comes down to the motherboard or cpu. 3. 2ghz for a 6750 is considered modest. My voltage was set at 1. 45 and temps never went above 60c under load. I really don't think the cpu would fail under these conditions. I don't have another machine to test out the cpu or motherboard unfortunately, what else can i do?

Usb And Unknown Orange Connector
I have questions regarding my usb2. 0 connectors and this strange orange connector coming from my front intake fan. I think that this orange connector is a connector that goes to the chassis header right? The other 2 fans dont have this connector. Now the two usb 2. 0 cables, i know where they go, but i dont know which row they go on, whether its top or bottom. I assume top, because both cables have 1 row of 5 pins, and as u can see from the picture, the header has a bottom row of 4 pins, and a top row of 5 pins. Which row do i connect the cable to?

Laptop Hdd Interface Unknown
I bought a used dell lattitude cpx to build a digital picture frame with. I want to remove the harddrive and replace it with a flash part. My original idea was to get a $20 ide to compact flash adapter, however, my laptop isn't ide and i'm not really sure what it is. It might be some kind of mini-scsi. Here is a link to a picture of the interface, does anyone know what that interface is?
The drive itself is some kind of mini-ide, and the drive bay converts the mystery interface to mini-ide, i guess i can always do this. Mystery interface -> mini-ide - using the drive bay itself
Mini-ide -> ide - i'm assuming i can find that adapter online somewhere
Ide -> compact flash - i've seen these adapters around for about $20
Am i overlooking something? With all of these connectors is there any problem getting power to the flash chip?

Usb Devices Stopped Working - Message: Unknown Device
Randomly when i was on my computer yesterday all of a sudden everything connected to my computer by usb stopped working, i tried reconnecting, restarting etc, but everytime i plug anything in by usb it says unknown device and doesn't work not sure if maybe usb ports got fried somehow. But that seems unlikely because they still detect that something's connected and then i plugged in a serial mouse and keyboard and they work so i'm not quite sure what happened or why.

Optical Out Volume Control
I just installed an ht omega striker sound card and have it attached optical out to my home theater system. Windows volume no longer affects the volume level of my sound system. If i turn it all the way up or down, the level is the same. Have i forfeited my ability to control volume with the mce remote, or am i missing something simple? I've looked elsewhere for an answer to this, but have had no luck.

Volume Bitmap Errors
My disk is showing up volume bitmap errors when i run chkdsk. It says to fix these errors run chkdsk /f which i do. It then runs the scan upon startup etc. However it does not fix the problem. I have already tried doing a windows format to try and correct the problem. However, this did not work. The drive was previously ext3 so perhaps it needs a low level format (writing 0's) to fix this. What is this volume bitmap for and can i fix it without a low level?

Dynamic Volume Creation
Ok. I'll try to be as clear as possible with this one. Dell optiplex 740 (athlon xp 5600+, 80gb c: drive, 2x 40gb (to be raid 0), dvd burner) would anyone know how to make my desktop computer think it's a desktop (not a laptop) and allow me to setup dynamic disks?
The os is installed using a corporate windows xp image, not the corporate xp cd. I am trying to setup an office file share to speed up the deployment of our xp image to new pc's in the office (our primary server for this is offsite and rather slow copying the 4gb image each time). I setup the new computer, and attempted to setup the 2x 40gbs into a dynamic raid 0 set. Our image seems to have been mastered on a laptop, since there is no option to convert a drive to dynamic. I have ruled out hardware, as i swapped the c: drive and installed windows via a regular dell xp disc. I converted the drives to dynamic with no issue. I swapped the c: back to our image xp, and now the only option given is to convert the disks back to basic disks. I cannot allow a regular xp computer on our network for security reasons, as the image contains security patches and anti virus, otherwise i would just do that. The optiplex 740 does not have hardware raid, and buying a card is not an option for our office.

Hardware Raid Vs Software Raid / Redhat Enterprise Linux
I am about to spend $10, 000+ on some new ibm server equipment. I am trying to decide if i should use the hardware raid controller or the software raid controller built into redhat enterprise linux. Any suggestions?

Do I Need Raid Enabled Drives For Software / Firmware Raid ?
First off, i am completely aware of the fact that you need a re drive with tler enabled for correct hardware raid. My question though is tler needed for software (windows and linux) or firmware (onboard or fakeraid) raid setups? Will these implementations drop a hdd if it spends too much time correcting a read/write error?
In a single drive scenario, the drive will attempt to read/write the same sector for up to 60 seconds and then remap it if possible. In a hardware raid scenario, the controller will tell the failed drive to remap to a new sector with data from a good redundant drive (raid 0 not apply here). My second question is if indeed you do need a tler enabled drive because the controller will drop the hdd, then what will handle read/write errors? Will these software/firmware raid controllers do the same error recovery?
If there is no error recovery, it would seem that software/firmware raid are just bad news. This is esp true for firmware raid which would seem to have all the downsides of the other controller types and none of the benefits. Third question deals with ssds. Are there only certain ones qualified for raid and 24x7 usage? I have not seen a distinction like i have with hdds. Also, are these going to work properly in a raid 5, as the controller will want to try and fix any errors like they are hdds, yet the ssds have very good internal error correction.
