Hibernation Facility / Option Disappeared In Windows

I had a problem with my laptop, which led me to using the windows xp recovery disk supplied plus the utilities disc as supplied. It solved the problem i had, but created a couple of others. Firstly my hibernation facility disappeared despite me going through the process of enabling it. Secondly, when i boot up, the windows size (max and mim) always start on mim and i have to maximise it manually. But on booting up again all the windows are on the minimum size again. Of course i can live with this, but it is very annoying.

Does Windows ' Turn Off Hard Disks ' Option Affect Drive Lifespan ?

Does anyone know if the windows (xp home in this case) "turn off hard disks" option in power options properties > power schemes will affect the amount of wear and tear on a hard drive or how long the drive will last? I'm not worried about the power consumption, i just want to avoid excess wear and tear on the drive.

Cd Rom Disappeared

Well, this is a little strange. My cd rom drives are no longer showing up in my computer, and they do not read cd's. However, under device manager, they are there, and show to be working properly. I've tried uninstalling them and reinstalling, updating drivers, updating firmware, messing with crap in the bios, nothing works. I don't know when or why they stopped working, they just sort of disapeared. Anyone have an idea what could have caused this, and how i can get my cd-roms back?

Hp Scanjet 3670 Scanner No Destination Option

I have tried to un-install, re-install with no success. When i press the scan button, it opens a window in which one of the options is to indicate destination for the scanned image. It's a drop-down menu but it is blank and gives me no option what so ever to select any destination. It will not scan if there is no destination so i'm stuck. The scanner software that comes with my windows xp works and communicates fine with the scanner but it is the hp software that won't work. I also tried re-downloading drivers and software with no positive results. I have no clue.

Partitions Disappeared On New 1.5tb Drive

The scene, circa 1 week ago: i had just installed a brand new 1. 5tb wd hard drive and partitioned it into three equal spaces (ntfs, accessible natively from both linux and windows). I moved my last 10 years' collection of music, sound effects, beats, movies, tv shows, and other random media to the drive, now that it had plenty of room to breathe. The turn: a couple days ago i tried to access my media and couldn't. Got some weird linux-y error box. I figured rebooting would help, but when i did so, the drives didn't auto-mount at all. Manually mounting them didn't work either. Figuring an ntfs problem was best solved with windows, i booted into winxp pro and had a look. The drives (x, y, z) had disappeared, and the partition editor called the whole 1. 5tb drive as unallocated space. Even with a 21 mbps connection, it's going to take me bloody forever to build my media library back. I've tried norton disk doctor and deaddiscdoctor, but to no avail. Norton's like "lol *** did you do" and ddd doesn't even see the drive. Anyone know any tricks that will help me get my files back?

Lg Dvd Drive Disappeared From Vista

I have an lg 4163b dvd-rom/writer which up until today was working just fine and no problems to report. I was just about to load up a game which requires the disc in the drive and i get a notification that the disc wasn't found. I thought this was odd, and sure enough in "my computer" there is no cd/dvd drives showing. Following this up, i checked the device manager and it seems that my dvd drivers got screwed up somehow (the only major change i've made was installing new nvidia graphics drivers yesterday, which shouldn't have affected the dvd). I've been all over the internet - lg's site, google, etc. - And i cannot find any drivers that want to work for vista. Every time i run the firmware installer's it cannot detect the drive, and won't install. Anyone have any workaround solutions for me to try?

The drive is about 5 years old, but its been working just fine, and i generally don't use the drive for anything anymore, so i'd hate to have to buy a new one just because vista is being stupid!

Folders Disappeared Off Hard Drive But They Are Still There ?

What happened is i turned the computer off from its power button so no shutdown. Later on when i turned it back on, one of my hard drives (the one with all my blurays ) could not be detected by windows (windows 7 that is). Anyways i checked disk maanagement and it reported as being raw, i ran checkdisk with /f /r and /x enabled in command prompt and after it finished and i restarted my bluray partition reapperaed, everything seemed okay however when i double clicked it, none of the files were there ( actually folders cuz i put them all under 720p and 1080p). Anyways now you might think well they got deleted but the thijng is that windows is reporting that partition as having only 70 gigs free out of 600 which is exactly as it was before. So the files are there i just can't see them. They are not hidden or anything. Widnows is just being stuopid somehow. So what i am supposed to do to get those files back. Recovery did not rly work. It goes half way through and my hard drive starts making a weird loud noise and it just freezes. I actually don't know what to do anymore and i hope you guys can help me out with tihs one.

A couple of days ago my computer rebooted by itself, i was sat behind the computer but not actually using it. I didn't think too much of it at the time. Keyboard Works In Windows Xp Pro But Not In Windows Vista

After cleaning up my hard drive yesterday, my keyboard would not work in vista ultimate 64bit. I tried 2 other keyboards. Neither of which would work either. 2 were ps2 keyboards and one was usb. Now, each keyboard was identified at post and would work in the bios. Now here is the really weird part. I decided i would go ahead and do a fresh intall of vista, as i was about due for it anyway. Just in case. I also cleared cmos just in case i somehow change something in the bios that was causing this (though i doubt it since the keyboard worked in bios). So, i reinstalled vista, and was able to use the keyboard to put in the activation key. So, i thought i was all set. However, once windows fully booted, none of the keyboards would work again. How is it possible that this problem carried over to a fresh install?

At this point, i became very frustrated. I decided to try installing windows xp pro. The xp installed, and now all of the keyboards work perfectly in windows. This would be fine, but i've got use to vista now, and would prefer to use it. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Could it have anything to do with installing vista too many times, so it started to disable functions.

Windows Xp Not Booting

A few days ago i turned my win xp computer on and it wouldn't boot. I tried booting to the last known good config. It showed me the blue screen that talks about a hardware problem. It said boot-sector not mountable. I wanted to make sure that my data was intact so i booted up using a linux live cd. I made sure i can read a few files from that hard-drive (formated as ntfs). Linux read the files fine. I tried the win recovery console and did a 'dir' command. It said 'directory enumeration failed. '
I wanted to see what the diskpart command in the recover console would say. For file-system, it came up blank. I installed win xp on a new hard drive with the original hard drive as a slave. Windows saw the hard drive but when i clicked it to view the files, it would sit for about 60 seconds and never open the drive. Right clicking on the drive and choosing properties would not show the properties page. Also, using 'cmd' from the new windows install and typing 'd:' told me: data error (cyclical redundancy check). Would anyone have a clue what could be the problem and more importantly, how can i fix it? Could i possibly have a virus?

Using Two Monitors Windows Xp

I have two monitors going for the first time and my question is on the secondary monitor. Should there be a windows task bar? More importantly, can there be a windows task bar?

I may be confusing the terms cloning, mirroring, etc. But as it is now, the two monitors combined actually form an extended desktop of computer #1. I can drag and drop items between the two. Is this as good as it gets? Or can i actually give the second monitor commands to grab a website like cnet and the other monitor grab a website like cookinglight? Again i would need windows to do that, right?

Not sure if it is important:
#1 is samsung flat screen 24" dvi-d single
#2 is sony crt 21" vga to dvi converter
To a nividia geforce pci card second port

Installing Windows 7

Again i am not all that knowledgeable on computer software. So i have vista prem at the moment, i am looking to download windows 7. So here is the thing i have been watching all these videos of folks moving all there files to an external hd before they install, however when i upgraded from windows vista basic to premier i did not have to do a thing, i did not even need to erase the old version it was like the new vista prem just over-writed the old basic, also all my files there fine no need to move anything. So with windows7 what is the deal, do i just download it and it will do it's thing, i guess my question is this. 1. Will i need to move all my files, if so will i need to move absolutely everything like "program files" "sw set up" "users" pictures, music. Like everything. 2. Will i need to erase vista prem from my hd to free up the space, or will windows 7 just overwrite vista.

Lightscribe Windows 7

Okay, so i'm looking to put a cover on a cd that i burned using lightscreibe (i know cover isn't the right word but bear with me). When i go into the start menu under all programs there is the 'lightscribe direct disk labeling' folder, and inside that are 'getting started' 'label print' 'lightscribe control panel' 'lightscribe website' and 'quick demo'. The control panel doesn't help, the website just has patterns, and the demo doesn't explain my problem. On the 'getting started' thing, it says "to get started insert media label side down into the drive then click start->all programs->lightscribe direct disc labeling->lightscribe template labeler" but i don't have a 'lightscribe template labeler' option. I tried the 'label print' option, but that's only for paper. So what is it? My computer came with lightscribe (a. K. A. It's lightscribe capable) and i'm assuming that i have the software since all of the stuff listed above is in my start menu. Not that the problem is with the disks, but my disks are lightscribe cd's from memorex (got 'em at office depot). So, if someone could give me guidance as to how to proceed that would be great. P. S. There isn't any other lightscribe stuff on my computer. I searched it and there's nothing else starting with the letter 'l' in my all programs list.

Windows 7 Domain Help

I'm going into freshman year of high school this year, and it is required that we put our laptops on the school domain. Im like the "tech wizard" of my class and i do nto want my account to be limited like they are on the regular school computers!

I have a few questions. Please help?

1. The accounts are really restricted. If im on my own personal computer but on the domain, will i not be able to download software like it is on the regular computers? Because i use a lot of different software. Like google chrome! Or will i need the password!?

2. Will the tech dude at my school be able to see all my web activity? Or like. Access my files and stuff. 3. Can i switch on and off of the domain or is that bad? Will my files change?!

4. Can i connect to different routers than the one directly on my domain? Like. Sorry this is so extensive!

5. We get our laptops before school. If i personalize my user account and everything beforehand, will i lose all that when i join the domain?

The school computers have our accounts on network drives. Will mine b on that network drive or on my computer?!

Its a dell studio 14 (coming in the mail soon) with win7 pro 64bit.

Windows 7 Installation

I have a lenovo n500 and i had installed windows 7 on it. And after a half year, i would install windows 7 again, because i had a malware problem i could not resolve. I just moved all the files that i wanted, movies, music, and other documents to another computer. So i did not make a back up. I tried to install from a usb device, and it worked fine, until the first reboot in the installation. When it started again i could choose:

-Windows 7

-Windows installation rollback

-Windows 7

And i thought that was really strange, so i selected windows installation rollback

And it said the installation was not success full. And then it tried to undo the installation, and that was another failure. So when i select

- Windows 7

- Windows installation rollback

Cmd opens. With a windows 7 theme in the background. And if i choose the -windows 7 at the bottom, "start up repair" starts, and that cant solve the problem either. So what should i do now?

Faxing In Windows Xp

1. Open control panel, and click add or remove programs. 2. Click add/remove windows components. Select the fax services check box, and then click next. The windows component wizard takes care of the rest. Note: if you don't have a modem already installed, take care of that now. Make sure the modem is connected to a phone line and the phone line is connected to a working jack. (You'd be surprised how often folks overlook these details. )

After the fax component is installed, the next step is configuring it. You configure the fax service in the fax console, the center for faxing tasks. To configure the fax console:

1. Click start, point to all programs, point to accessories, point to communications, point to fax, and then click fax console. 2. On the tools menu in fax console, click configure fax, which starts the fax configuration wizard. Click next to start configuring your fax information. 3. On the sender information page, include your name or your business name and your fax number. Everything else on the page is optional. 4. On the select device for sending or receiving faxes page, your modem will be selected, unless you have more than one, in which case, select the right one. Specify send and receive options, and whether you'll manually answer incoming faxes or answer automatically when received. 5. On the transmitting subscriber identification (tsid) and called subscriber identification (csid) pages, enter your business name and fax number. These fields really matter when you're running special fax routing software. Most software of this kind depends on tsids to determine where to direct an incoming fax. See how to enable and configure the fax service in windows xp for more information. 6. On the routing options page, specify how incoming faxes will be handled. All faxes are stored automatically in the fax console, but you can also print a copy or store a copy in a local folder or on your network. When you want to change or verify any of these settings, simply run the fax configuration wizard again. To open the wizard, on the tools menu of the fax console, click configure fax. Sending faxes from your computer
-

You can fax a document that's stored on your computer or you can scan a document and fax it by sending to your fax printer. In this section, i'll explain how to fax a document from your computer. If you can print a document, you can fax it. The windows xp fax service uses the windows address book (wab) as its default address book for fax numbers. When you install outlook 2000 or outlook 2002, the fax service switches to the outlook address book (oab) as its source for fax addresses. So you don't need to maintain two address books"just one will do. To fax a document stored on your computer:

1. On the file menu of the document, click print. 2. In the print or print setup dialog box, in the printer name box, click fax to open the send fax wizard. (When faxing from an office program, on the file menu, point to send to, and then click fax recipient. An office fax wizard asks for specific information and then hands the process over to the send fax wizard. )

3. To supply the recipient's fax number, click address book, and select one or more recipients just as if you were sending them an e-mail message. 4. If you've already set up dialing rules, skip ahead. If you haven't, click dialing rules. If you need to dial an extra digit to get an outside line, or use a special carrier code, or dial an area code even for local numbers, add those settings here, and then click ok to return to the fax sending. Very important: telephone numbers must be in the canonical form in which a u. S. Number would appear as +1 (626) 555-1212. If you use even a slightly different form such as (626) 555-1212 or 1-626-555-1212, the dialing rules won't be applied and the fax transmission will fail. 5. Select a cover page. Choose from the list or specify no cover page at all. Personally, i forego cover sheets unless i'm sending to a big corporation where it might get lost or the document needs some clarification. If you're into cover sheets, you can download additional fax and transmission covers from the office template gallery. 6. Specify when the fax should be sent as well as the fax's priority. Priority only matters if you're stacking up a number of faxes to be sent at a particular time. In that case, the order of sending will be determined by the priority you set. 7. Finally, you're presented with a screen recapping the details of the fax and offering a chance to preview it. If the fax is a multi-page one, you'll be able to preview only the first page.
