Moving Vista To New Hard Drive
Replies: 11 | Post Date: June 22nd, 2008, 01:59 PM | User: Avalon1 | Forums: discussions.hardwarecentral.comI have vista basic on my dell. I am going to install a second hard drive. I found on western digital web page that says i can right click the old drive and use cut and it will remove the whole drive from the old western digital and then select the new drive and copy the entire drive to the new hard drive. This sounds too simple. Will it work?

Moving Windows To Another Hard Drive
I have been trying to move my windows partition to a new hard drive. I have tried xcopy as well as ghost. Both do make exact copies of windows, but i am having problems booting up from my new hard drive. First of all, when i disconnect my old hard drive and leave the new one in. It takes a long time to detect it. I dont know why, i have to wait two minutes everytime i restart. Thats not all of it. It doesnt boot into windows at all. It just says, boot failure. I thought i might have to reset the mbr. I used old dos, to go into fdisk /mbr. It didnt work also. Right now i am pretty much clue less. I'm starting to think it's the hard drive self. I hope thats not the problem since when i put my old hard drive back it, the computer boots up normally with out any problems. Any ideas?

Do I Have To Format A New Hard Drive Before Installing Vista 64 ?
I just installed a new wd 1tb black hard drive into a new system. I installed vista 64 without doing any type of format. Was i supposed to format the drive before installing the os?
Or does it automatically use ntfs?
Just want to find out right away so i can redo it if necessary.

Hard Drive Not Recognized On Vista 64 Bit
I physically installed the wd1600ys western digital 160gb caviar hd into the computer. Pata and sata cables. However it is not recognizing it. I had the old install disc for xp version which will not work on my vista. Now that being said i am unable to find the drivers needed for my computer to recognize it. I believe it needs western digital tools. I called the tech support at western digital and they stated the drivers are only available for vista 32 bit. My vista reads 32 programs. He couldn't tell me where those drivers were. He was pretty aggravated when he picked up probably because someone called him and complained that their cup holder( disc drive) was broke when it spilled the drink. Please direct me to a website where i may download the driver to recognize my hd.

Problem Installing Vista On Sata Ii Hard Drive
I have just built my first computer and cant get vista ultimate to install on my barracuda 7200. 10 sata 3. 0gb/s 500-gb hard drive. When i get to the screen that asks you to select your hd to install vista on, it recognizes my drive but has a message on the bottom of the screen stating. "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation. "
Is their anything i can do to get windows installed on this hd?

Moving Itunes Between Hard Drives
My computer runs off 2 hard-drives, c and d. The c drive (systems) had no free space as its only 30gb for downloading films etc. So i've been moving all my pictures and music into my d (data) drive which is 120gb. However. I tried to move i-tunes. And it has moved half of the stuff into my d drive and will not let me move the rest so now half is in the c. Now i-tunes will not play properly and only let me access half the music. And i cant move the folders into the same place. It says this is because the program is running which it is not. I have checked and tried so many things but am having real problems. It is extremely frustrating and i have a feeling it really needs someone with computer knowledge to sit down and look at it.

Cannot Access 160gb Drive After Moving It From Old Pc
I had a pentium 2/500mhz system with 2 ide drives. My d: drive is a western digital wd1600(160gb) drive. I just bought a new pentium 4 and wanted to move the 160gb drive, since my mother board fried on my p2, to the the new pc as my new d drive. I had lots of digital family pictures and music files on it. The bios can see it as my slave drive on ide1, but the os cannot mount it. If i go to disk manager, it can see it, but the status says foreign. If i right click on the drive it says that i can switch to basic, but i will lose all of my data. I am desperately trying to save the old data. What am i missing?

Moving From Raid 0 To 1tb Sata Ii Single Drive
When i built my current high performance rig last october, i noticed the raid0 performance kinda sucked. The benchmark score on these old 80gig drives are nowhere near up to par with a new sataii drive. So i just ordered a 1tb western digital wd10eads drive. I plan to ghost the the raid0 to this new drive and then remove the raid setup all together. Anyone done something similar recently? The performance advantages now a days with raid0 is questionable. Storage bandwidth with sata ii more than makes up for any performance gain from striping 2 drives. The idea originally was drop frame free video capturing on a pc. But times have changed. Dv capture need sustained 3. 4mb/s throughput. That is a drop in the bucket now! But in the old days it was hard to achieve on a system with out raid0.

Whs - Moving System Drive Files To Storage Drives
Here's my problem. Whs started filling up my system drive's storage before i could stick another storage drive in it. As a result, whs keeps filling the system drive while leaving the new storage drive [relatively] untouched. From what i've observed previously, whs fills up one hard drive before moving on to another. Now i just want to have whs "move" whatever files it's got on the system drive to the new drive, but the remove option in the console for the system drive is greyed out. Ideas and solutions?

Vista Installation / Wd Hard Disk Driver Problem
I purchased a 32-bit vista home premium dvd (legal copy) to install on my newly bought wd 400gb caviar se (8mb cache - model number wd4000aajs). First of all, after windows loads the files for installation or whatever in that gray progress bar on the bottom of the screen it takes about 7-8 minutes just hanging on that blue/green splash screen. I then am amble to choose the language and click the install now button. It then goes to the "please wait. " Screen for another 5 minutes - is this 15 minute wait in total normal?
Now the real problem, i'm getting a "driver error" message at the 'collecting information stage' - it is simply asking for a driver for my hdd (wd4000aajs). I am then given the option to browse a cd/dvd. I have tried 2 versions of western digital cd - version 11. 1 and 11. 3 (i.e. , Diagnostic/recovery/drivers cd). It couldn't find any appropriate driver for the hard disk. I searched and searched but couldn't find any vista driver for my 2nd gen sata hard disk? Wd's download library page doesn't say anything about vista compatibility except they are continuously updating the drivers (my a s s)
How can i solve this problem?
1) i downloaded sata ahci drivers from biostar's web page. I will put those into a diskette and try again in the same stage. Perhaps vista finds sata drives for the motherboard and my problem ends!
2) should i update the bios version first? Or should i change any settings in the bios?
3) likewise, do you think playing with master/slave jumpers on the drives might solve the problem?
4) if it doesn't work with above options i am thinking to assemble the rig in its barebones (cpu/ram/vid card/1gb ram/ 1 hdd/1 dvd) - right now everything is connected to the mobo and i already put it inside the case. I generally try to post it in the barebone stage - if it posts i put everything inside the case. And in this situation it posted so i went ahead and put everything inside the case. I'm too lazy to pull them out!

Cloning Vista From Old Drive To New
So i just got done getting the drive cloned and ran hdtune a few times. On a couple runs, my min dropped to 10-15mb/s which doesn't seem normal. These are close to the results i typically get though (unless something is loading in the background - this is my os drive by the way). How does it look?

Tape Drive For Vista
Ok since they toke away out of the box tape drive support for vista what is everyone using for doing backups with their tape drives under vista?
The quantum sdlt tape drive was free along with the adaptec scsi card and 80+ tapes that were only used once so i do not want to hear just use an external hard drive. So far it looks like novabackup is the best bet but i was wondering if there was something better or even something that is free.

Lg Dvd Drive Disappeared From Vista
I have an lg 4163b dvd-rom/writer which up until today was working just fine and no problems to report. I was just about to load up a game which requires the disc in the drive and i get a notification that the disc wasn't found. I thought this was odd, and sure enough in "my computer" there is no cd/dvd drives showing. Following this up, i checked the device manager and it seems that my dvd drivers got screwed up somehow (the only major change i've made was installing new nvidia graphics drivers yesterday, which shouldn't have affected the dvd). I've been all over the internet - lg's site, google, etc. - And i cannot find any drivers that want to work for vista. Every time i run the firmware installer's it cannot detect the drive, and won't install. Anyone have any workaround solutions for me to try?
The drive is about 5 years old, but its been working just fine, and i generally don't use the drive for anything anymore, so i'd hate to have to buy a new one just because vista is being stupid!

Booting Vista From Flash Drive
I sell laptops new from manufacture which are mainly sony vaio's. I would like to know if i could boot vista from a flash drive either a usb or memory stick without anything being written to the hard drive. This is to save time on restoring laptop to factory state. Is this possible or is there another solution available.

Vista - Inserting Dvd Causes The Drive To Disappear
When i place a burned dvd into my drive, the computer starts to load it for about 10 seconds, and then all of a sudden the entire drive disappears from my drive list. I have to reboot the computer (without the disc in) to get it to recognize the drive again. If i put the original dvd in the tray, it works fine and i'm able to explore the dvd. The dvd drive is an nec nd-2510a. I am using vista premium 32-bit. Oh, and if i place the same burned dvd into my girlfriends computer running on xp, which has the exact same nec drive, it works fine. Any thoughts?

Installing Windows Vista Via Flash Drive
No tweaking, no fking around, no program installs - put the dvd in the drive, put the flash drive in the usb port and run the command. Thats it. The rest of this post is purely there because people always try and do something differently, or dont bother reading the instructions properly!
This does not work with xp, so dont ask.command for copying vista (or 7) dvd to flash drive
Open a run command - use the "windows key + r" trick to open a run menu, if its not enabled in your start menu
Xcopy x:*. * /S/e/f y:
X: being source (dvd / iso image on virtual drive)
Y: being destination drive (flash drive)
A dos prompt will open and show the files copying - it may appear to have stopped on a file (install. Wim i think), but dont worry - thats a large file so it takes a while. You can use this to install vista off a flash drive, no longer needing a dvd. Above this line is all you need to make a bootable flash drive!
As simple as this is, people always ask a bazillion questions.common ones are answered below. The drive letters x: and y: need to be substituted with whatever letters your system uses. Its obvious, but some people still miss that. I've done this with ntfs and fat32 flash drives heaps of times - havent burned a dvd for an os in years. Your motherboard is going to need to boot from usb for this to install. Many motherboards have a "quick boot" method by pressing escape or f8 while the bios post screen is still loading. Dont always assume it will show as a usb device, often it shows under the hdd menus. Obviously, you're going to need a dvd in the drive, or mount the iso via some virtual drive software, like deamon tools or virtual clone drive. If your flash drive is full, the dos prompt will just close without copying the last files. Make sure you have enough free space to fit the contents of the iso (a 4gb flash drive is not exactly 4gb - mine is 3. 83gb after formatting, and too small for a vista sp2 install). I suggest formatting and starting with a blank flash drive - you can always add your other files back afterwards. You can do this from any windows os - xcopy hasnt changed in a looooong time, so it should even work in os's as old as win95. Since this has to be clarified, i mean you can make the vista/7 bootable usb disk in older os's. That is not the same as making bootable copies of them!
And a picture guide, for those who cant live without them. 1.command line
2. Format flash drive to ntfs (16gb drive)
3. Files copying
4. Open your boot menu in the bios, or change the boot order. My media pc allows me to hit f12 and get this:
(If i had my flash drive plugged in for this photo, it would read as "usb-hdd imation nano" in the '+hard disk' menu)
5. Run the vista/7 installer as normal
Out of niceness, i quote pyeti and naelex's alternate method. This one is rather noob friendly, but requires a third party program. This method works for xp!
Code:
Plug in your usb key. Right click on the ultraiso shortcut, and click on run as administrator. Click on file (menu bar) and open. Navigate to your windows 7 iso file and select it and click on the open button. In the bottom local pane, select your usb flash key drive. Click on bootable (menu bar) and wite disk image. Make sure the locations are correct, and check the verify box and click on the write button. Click on yes to confirm writing to the usb drive. When it's done, click on the close button. You now have a windows 7 installation usb flash key.

Vista Not Recognizing Drive Until Power Off Pc Then Back On
I have an iomega 1tb usb drive connect to my vista (x64) ultimate pc. I have to manually power off and then back on for the pc to recognize it. This occurs even after rebooting. It works with xp fine. Any thoughts?

Dvd Drive For Vista 64-bit And Windows 7
I don't need anything fancy or expensive. I primarily use my dvd drive to install/play games and occasionally burn something to a dvd. It should be compatible with vista 64-bit and windows 7. Any recommendations?

Ram Drive For Paging File On Vista
Im finally putting together my new computer build and was looking at getting 8 gb of ram, then converting half of it into a ram drive for the paging file. Is there any way of doing this on vista home premium x64 ?

Shrink Disk Drive In Windows Vista
I would like to know the details regarding the outcome after doing the 'shrink volume' feature in windows vista. 1. If i shrink my 'c' drive with 120 gb space, what will be the free (unallocated) space if the shrink utility shows the following:
A. Total size before shrinking : 115591 mb
B. Size of available shrink space in mb : 21929 mb
C. Enter the amount of space to shrink : 21929 mb
D. Total size after shrink in mb : 93662 mb
Of the last three options (b, c, d) which will be the unallocated, free space after shrinking ?

Can't Install Vista Or Win7 On Sata Drive
I thought it would be simple. Does it matter which sata slots are used for a boot drive. There are 8 on my board 4 controlled by intel ichr7 and the others by marvel. Attempts to install windows result in error message that the drive is configured as active in the bios and suggest using diskpart utility to clean the drive? Does sata use master/slave? The hd is a wd caviar blue 300gb. What am i doing incorrectly?

Usb Jump Drive Prevents Vista Boot
So i just got a usb cruzer micro 2. 0gb for my vista premium. I removed the u3. And formatted it. Readyboost works, but when i reboot the computer, the screen gets stuck on the hp logo, and vista will not boot. I reseted it one time and then vista had to do a system restore because of a hardware change or something. Does anyone know how to fix this problem where once the usb drive is plugged in, and the computer restarts, it will not boot into windows vista?
Note: vista works normally again, when the jump drive is not plugged in. I had the exact same drive before and it did not do this.

Mouse Pointer Moving Around By Itself
I have a dell laptop with win xp. Recently i've had a problem with my mouse pointer becoming possessed and moving around by itself. If i use a regular mouse, i have no control over the pointer when it acts up like this. If i use the glidepad, i have some control, but it still moves around while i'm trying to control it. I've tried updating the driver, and i did a windows update. Rebooting seems to help temporarily, but not always and it's very sporadic. It's driving me crazy, anyone experience this or have any ideas how to fix it?

Physically Moving Computer
A week ago i moved offices where i work and i brought my computer with me. It was powered up in the morning and i had it all set up at the new office before lunch. It was maybe a 10 minute walk to the new place. I came back after lunch and started working on it, and by 3:30 it locked up and crashed. No biggie, restart it. Doesn't boot past windows screen. Try safe mode, nope. Try a chkdsk, fails at 50% saying theres an unrecoverable hard drive error. Take the hard drive to it and they got files off of it but they say it just stop spinning. Drive is basically dead. End of story. Also a week ago i'm moving into a new house. Load my desktop computer into the car, drive it over, leave it in a spare room. Finally got around to hooking it up yesterday and it won't even post. No bios screen. There's a thing in the back thats hooked up to 4 leds which tell me if there's a problem. Look up in the manual and it says cpu is broken or not working. I take off heatsink and reset the processor, same thing. Nothing. Maybe its processor, maybe its mobo, maybe its psu. Don't know. But its dead. Is this just bad coincidence? What precautions do you use when moving computers? Am i just a curse to computers? I'm thinking about replacing my computer anyway but should i be worried that i'll fry that the next time i move?

Is Usb Hard Drive Safer Than Normal Hard Drive ?
At the moment i have about 2t of data over 5hard drives, most of then films i have converted to avi from home as i live in uni halls the rooms are small, i am worried that leaving my pc on all the time will lower the life of my hard drives with data on, do you think it would be a good choice to put them into a usb drive and that way i only use them when i need? Is usb hard drive safer than normal hard drive ? Or am i just being silly?
