No Floppy Drive Support In Vista
Replies: 9 | Post Date: 01-22-2008, 11:44 AM | User: Kenkickr | Forums: forums.techpowerup.comI hooked up my floppy drive last night to flash my vid card and all vista keeps saying is it cannot find a driver for my device. Has anyone here seen or heard of this before and if so is there a fix besides reinstalling o/s?

I was reading over at head-fi, and i've come across several posts from individuals stating that they have transitioned from an x-fi card to an external dac / dac + amp and have actually enjoyed "better sound" while gaming (granted, you need to have alchemy). By no means do i second-guess this setup with regards to flac/ape, or higher / hi-def movies, but i'm curious as to others opinions on this.

Floppy Drive Necessary ?
What is the use for a 3. 5" drive nowadays? I have literally never used my 3. 5" drive whatsoever. My reason for asking is that i am going to help a buddy build a computer and i will be building one myself here in a few months or so. Back to my question. What is the need for a 3. 5"?

Floppy Drive Does Not Read
http://www.Newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?Description=21-103-116&depa=0
Thats the floppy drive i isntalled, however i am having some problems running it. The computer recognizes it, however when i insert a floppy it doesnt read it, says please insert floppy as if there was no floppy in there, but there is. Ive tried it with 10 different floppys they all had the same message. Tried them in my other two pc's and they work fine. Any ideas as to what my problem is?
The light on my floppy drive is also always on, shouldn't it be off when not in use? Maybe i installed incorrectly.

Floppy Drive Not Working
Recently i added a second hard drive and at that time i had to remove the connections to the floppy drive. When i put everything back, the floppy drive is not working and it is giving a message "a: is not accessable. Device not ready" whenever i click on a: in the windows explorer. After few attempts i came to the conclusion that the floppy drive was bad and i bought new one. Again the same problem. Somebody suggested that the cable is not good and asked me to get a new one. I am going to try that as a last resort. I need this floppy drive working to install the hard drive configuration software which was stored in the floppy drive.

Floppy Drive Does Not Read Disks
My floppy drive won't read any floppy disk. It did before, no problem. Recently had a fiasco occur and had to format c and reinstall everything. Now, a won't read crap. The computer clearly recognizes the a drive, and thinks it has no problems. I'm on xp pro, the wires aren't crossed, and the disks work on other computers. It's a beige sony floppy drive, i can't locate new drivers for it anywhere.

Connecting Floppy Drive To New Psu
My psu doesn't seem to have a floppy connector on it, i'm not 100% familiar with the terminology, but i assume i need a "4 pin molex to floppy" connector. Is that it?

Setting Up Raid 0 - Without A Floppy Drive
I'm getting a laptop with 2 x 120gb hdd's to set them in raid 0 array. I never had raid array on any pc before. So i googled for some instructions. All seem to say that a floppy disk and drive is indispensible?
Does that mean that one cannot set raid 0 without floppy?
Also (excuse my n00bness here), where i'm getting the laptop from lists these options:
No raid +0, 00eur
Raid 0 +0, 00eur
Raid 1 +0, 00eur
Raid 5 +0, 00eur
Which means i can choose the array. And i selected raid 0. Does that mean that the raid setup will be ready up and running from the supplier and that i don't need to do anything? (I'm going to install the os myself).

Change Boot Drive With Floppy
How to change boot drive with floppy ? I would like to be able to swap between 2 different boot drives by using a floppy. I think that it is possible to do this, but i do not know how. Both operating systems will be using windows xp pro. If there is a hardware solution out there, i would prefer to use this method. I do not want to use a boot loader because i do not want the original operating system or its users to know of the other drive. A sort of stealth operating sytem if you will.

Boot Up From Usb Floppy Disk Drive
So i need a floppy drive. I do not have a power dongle, the small one on my antec neopower 480 for a floppy drive. Someone at microcenter told me that there are power dongle converters for floppys. But i was wondering, since i need to install my sata drivers off an a: drive when i boot from my xp c. D. Will a usb floppy drive could act exactly the same as an internal one? Can i boot up from a usb floppy disk drive?

Is A Floppy Drive Really Needed To Install A System ?
I bought a whole computer but didn't buy a floppy drive, i noticed that the dfi lanparty mobo i'm getting has a floppy disk included, and i would imagine my caviar se sata drive has a floppy bundled with it for installation (unsure though, just assuming), is a floppy drive really needed to install a system?

Floppy Drive Disk Boot Failure
Just built my own computer, and i cant install an os because the computer doesnt seem to find the floppy drive. I have connected the floppy drive to the motherboard with a 34-pin connecter, and i have the twisted end plugged to the floppy drive, and the long end to the mb. I noticed that one pin on the floppy drive (the second from the side) is missing.could that be the problem or should it be like that?
When i start the computer it says after counting the memory and all that, "verifying dmi pool data. Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter".

Floppy Drive Won't Work
Ok i have a pentium mmx system. My os is win 95. There are some major problems with my system and i wanted to reload win 95 on it but now it won't acknowledge my floppy drive or cd-rom. I have checked my bios setting and it does recognize that there is a floopy there and it should boot it. I have gone to the windows explorer and under "my computer" it lists the a drive. I click on the a drive and nothing happens except for the fact that computer freezes. I have changed drives out as well as cables. So i have no idea what to do next.

Reformatting Computer, No Floppy Drive / Cd Burner
Its about time i reformatted my pc, but i need some advice in doing so. I have done it in the past, but i ran into a bit trouble last time, so im looking for an efficient way of doing it. I don't have a floppy disc drive, and therefore no way of booting of a floppy. I have a win98 disc with serial, plus a winxp upgrade disc with serial, so once i get the win 98 start up screen running, ill be fine. The bit i need help with is getting into dos mode where i can then format c:, and then i guess all i need to do is boot up off the win98 disc. Any advice before i lend out the spare bedroom to mr.cock up?

Get A 5.25" Floppy Drive Working On Modern Machines
In order to access some ancient files, i need to get a 5. 25" floppy drive working on modern machines, and i want to build an external case for it so i can use it on any machine and keep it, but i really don't know much about these old drives and need help. Does anyone remember what you need to hook up a 5. 25 floppy (to a modern machine), and how you would get that going in an external case?
I was thinking i could just remove the drive from an external 3. 5" floppy drive, leaving the adaptor electronics to be built into a case (with psu) for the 5. 25" drive, but i quickly discovered the drive types have different connectors. (3. 5" drives have the usual double-row of pins in a socket, while 5. 25" drives have connection strips along the edge of a circuit board). Are these in fact, the same connections and pinout, just using different plugs? (In which case, would my use-parts-from-external-3. 5"-floppy plan still work if i simply wired up the appropriate connectors?). If this might be a plan, what kind of interface can you get on external floppies? Usb? If that's not going to work, how would i go about doing this?

External Usb Floppy Drive Power Adapter
I have an external usb floppy drive that i got some time ago. I need to use it for something but discovered that i have misplaced the ac adapter. The drive is designed to run off the bus unless you connect it to an un-powered hub but it works best with the adapter.considering this, what would the power specs on such an adapter be? I can't get any answers from the manufacturer for some reason (they went out of business and then came back). I seem to remember it being a 12 volt unit but the power draw was closer to an amp then most of the generic adapters you could find at radio shack, etc. I remember the adapter being pretty large.

Floppy Drive "disk I/o Error"
Can anyone help with a little problem i'm having with installing xp pro. Everytime i try to install from the floppies (can't boot from cdrom) i get this "disk i/o error". I have never came across this before. It isn't the floppy drive, because all other disks work. I tried formatting the floppy before using it.could there be something wrong with my boot sector?
Btw. I use powerquest's partition magic 8, and i'm getting this "bad boot signature byte" message when scanning the drive for errors!*

Cloning Vista From Old Drive To New
So i just got done getting the drive cloned and ran hdtune a few times. On a couple runs, my min dropped to 10-15mb/s which doesn't seem normal. These are close to the results i typically get though (unless something is loading in the background - this is my os drive by the way). How does it look?

Tape Drive For Vista
Ok since they toke away out of the box tape drive support for vista what is everyone using for doing backups with their tape drives under vista?
The quantum sdlt tape drive was free along with the adaptec scsi card and 80+ tapes that were only used once so i do not want to hear just use an external hard drive. So far it looks like novabackup is the best bet but i was wondering if there was something better or even something that is free.

Moving Vista To New Hard Drive
I have vista basic on my dell. I am going to install a second hard drive. I found on western digital web page that says i can right click the old drive and use cut and it will remove the whole drive from the old western digital and then select the new drive and copy the entire drive to the new hard drive. This sounds too simple. Will it work?

Hard Drive Monitoring For Vista
Can anyone recommend a free utility that can actively monitor the health of a hard drive. I would also like it to give some kind of alert if it detect any kind of problem. I did some searching on [h] and the internet but was not able to find much in the way of freeware.

Lg Dvd Drive Disappeared From Vista
I have an lg 4163b dvd-rom/writer which up until today was working just fine and no problems to report. I was just about to load up a game which requires the disc in the drive and i get a notification that the disc wasn't found. I thought this was odd, and sure enough in "my computer" there is no cd/dvd drives showing. Following this up, i checked the device manager and it seems that my dvd drivers got screwed up somehow (the only major change i've made was installing new nvidia graphics drivers yesterday, which shouldn't have affected the dvd). I've been all over the internet - lg's site, google, etc. - And i cannot find any drivers that want to work for vista. Every time i run the firmware installer's it cannot detect the drive, and won't install. Anyone have any workaround solutions for me to try?
The drive is about 5 years old, but its been working just fine, and i generally don't use the drive for anything anymore, so i'd hate to have to buy a new one just because vista is being stupid!

Booting Vista From Flash Drive
I sell laptops new from manufacture which are mainly sony vaio's. I would like to know if i could boot vista from a flash drive either a usb or memory stick without anything being written to the hard drive. This is to save time on restoring laptop to factory state. Is this possible or is there another solution available.

Vista - Inserting Dvd Causes The Drive To Disappear
When i place a burned dvd into my drive, the computer starts to load it for about 10 seconds, and then all of a sudden the entire drive disappears from my drive list. I have to reboot the computer (without the disc in) to get it to recognize the drive again. If i put the original dvd in the tray, it works fine and i'm able to explore the dvd. The dvd drive is an nec nd-2510a. I am using vista premium 32-bit. Oh, and if i place the same burned dvd into my girlfriends computer running on xp, which has the exact same nec drive, it works fine. Any thoughts?

Installing Windows Vista Via Flash Drive
No tweaking, no fking around, no program installs - put the dvd in the drive, put the flash drive in the usb port and run the command. Thats it. The rest of this post is purely there because people always try and do something differently, or dont bother reading the instructions properly!
This does not work with xp, so dont ask.command for copying vista (or 7) dvd to flash drive
Open a run command - use the "windows key + r" trick to open a run menu, if its not enabled in your start menu
Xcopy x:*. * /S/e/f y:
X: being source (dvd / iso image on virtual drive)
Y: being destination drive (flash drive)
A dos prompt will open and show the files copying - it may appear to have stopped on a file (install. Wim i think), but dont worry - thats a large file so it takes a while. You can use this to install vista off a flash drive, no longer needing a dvd. Above this line is all you need to make a bootable flash drive!
As simple as this is, people always ask a bazillion questions.common ones are answered below. The drive letters x: and y: need to be substituted with whatever letters your system uses. Its obvious, but some people still miss that. I've done this with ntfs and fat32 flash drives heaps of times - havent burned a dvd for an os in years. Your motherboard is going to need to boot from usb for this to install. Many motherboards have a "quick boot" method by pressing escape or f8 while the bios post screen is still loading. Dont always assume it will show as a usb device, often it shows under the hdd menus. Obviously, you're going to need a dvd in the drive, or mount the iso via some virtual drive software, like deamon tools or virtual clone drive. If your flash drive is full, the dos prompt will just close without copying the last files. Make sure you have enough free space to fit the contents of the iso (a 4gb flash drive is not exactly 4gb - mine is 3. 83gb after formatting, and too small for a vista sp2 install). I suggest formatting and starting with a blank flash drive - you can always add your other files back afterwards. You can do this from any windows os - xcopy hasnt changed in a looooong time, so it should even work in os's as old as win95. Since this has to be clarified, i mean you can make the vista/7 bootable usb disk in older os's. That is not the same as making bootable copies of them!
And a picture guide, for those who cant live without them. 1.command line
2. Format flash drive to ntfs (16gb drive)
3. Files copying
4. Open your boot menu in the bios, or change the boot order. My media pc allows me to hit f12 and get this:
(If i had my flash drive plugged in for this photo, it would read as "usb-hdd imation nano" in the '+hard disk' menu)
5. Run the vista/7 installer as normal
Out of niceness, i quote pyeti and naelex's alternate method. This one is rather noob friendly, but requires a third party program. This method works for xp!
Code:
Plug in your usb key. Right click on the ultraiso shortcut, and click on run as administrator. Click on file (menu bar) and open. Navigate to your windows 7 iso file and select it and click on the open button. In the bottom local pane, select your usb flash key drive. Click on bootable (menu bar) and wite disk image. Make sure the locations are correct, and check the verify box and click on the write button. Click on yes to confirm writing to the usb drive. When it's done, click on the close button. You now have a windows 7 installation usb flash key.
