Ssd Vs Ramdrive
Replies: 4 | Post Date: 06-09-2009, 12:46 PM | User: Jay2472000 | Forums: hardforum.comJust curious, as i have no experience with either of these. I was wondering if i was to want to use something for a "scratch drive" of sorts ( editing video, joining dl'ed movie clips, etc) what would be the better route, and why? Maybe some pros and cons of each. Would only need to be around a few ( 4-7 ? ) Gigs probably.

Best Way To Use An Ssd Drive
I've been reading up on the drives, but wanted some advice on how best to use it. I'm looking at the 80gb intel x25-m g2 - primarily because it's in the 'affordable' category at @ $250-$270. I plan to also install a larger internal hdd & run both. 80 gb gives me some concern, as my wife and i are memory hogs (tons of pictures & video of the kid, video games, productivity apps, etc. ) I've got my current, aging 300 gb internal hdd set up in 3 partitions: one for the os & productivity (read ms office, etc. ) Apps, one for video games, and one for my wife's photos, downloads (drivers, mod tools) etc. We've also got an external drive for back up & storing larger video files. The problem is that the 300gb hdd is so fully loaded, i have to delete programs to add content, and things are bogging down. Also, the external hdd is so slow, i can't use it to keep any programs on, because the load times are glacial. So the question: do you keep the sdd limited to only the os & key apps - or go ahead and load it up with your favorite programs? Do you partition an sdd?
What are your best recommendations for using an 80gb sdd?

Ssd Drive Adaptor
I just got in 2 ssd's and for now i am just going to let them lay down in my drive bay but i would like to mount them pretty soon. So i am having problems looking for some adapters to put in a 3. 5" drive bay for ssd's on newegg? Do y'all know any? Mounting in 5. 25" bay adapter will be great also!

Non Ssd Mechanical Drive
Looking to upgrade my main drive wd6400aaks which will become a new storage drive. Ssd is not really in my price range for storage amounts. I was looking at the velociraptor but people are saying they aren't worth it with the newest drives that are out.

Recommendations On A Ssd Drive
I have been thinking about making the ssd plunge but i'm not sure which one to get. I prefer to have a smaller drive which will contain the os and applications, but everything else (games, music, movies, etc. ) Will go on another larger/mechanical drive. So what would you guys recommend for something in 75 to 150 gb range?

Ssd And Standard Drives
So i'll be building a new computer in the next week or so and i have most of the parts ordered. I have been using a western digital caviar green wd10eads 1tb 32mb as an external drive hooked up to my laptop and my plan was to use it as my boot drive in the new build. However seeing as the rest of my system is reasonably high end (at least by my standards some of you guys are nuts) i thought it may be slightly on the slow side to run windows. I don't have a ton more money to spend as the rest of the parts have cleaned me out so my options are:
A) pick up another wd10eads 1tb and run them in raid 0
Or
B) buy a ssd such as the ocz vertex series 30gb
I've never owned a ssd so please forgive my noobness. I did search around but was unable to find the answers to a few specific questions i have regarding my situation. 30gigs wont cover my needs for os, programs, and games but it's all i can afford in a ssd right now. Between windows 7 and a 10 gig world of warcraft install i don't think i'd even have room left over for the cs4 suite let alone the laundry list of other games i want to install. So would i be better off with my os on the ssd and programs, games, and media on the wd 1tb or everything on 2 of the wb 1tb in raid 0?
Heres my setup so far:
I7 920 /w corsair h20
Evga x58 sli le
Xfx 5870
G. Skill 6gb ddr3 triple channel

Ssd Drive Advice
So i'm looking to upgrade this 64gb core ssd drive to a vertex or falcon drive. I have a few questions regarding what specific combination to go with. Here are my options so far. 2x vertex 60gb raid 0 ~$380
1x falcon 128gb ~$300
$300 is really about the limit of my budget for this so option 1 is really pushing it. I'm leaning heavily towards option 2 then sell off the old drive and get a 2nd one in a couple of months
Second q - i also have a perc5i that i can either use or sell off. My onboard is an ich9r. I'm not sure how much of an increase i would get from the perc (if any). Anyone?
This is primarily for my o/s and programs. Data is all stored on the server. I already have a 1 gb ramdrive. I will be using either win7 or vista ultimate 64 versions.

Anything Better Than Intel Ssd Drive ?
I've heard that the ocz vetex 2 is supposed to be faster in both read and writes then the intel ssd, is this true and are they out yet? Or is intel still the fastest for both read and writes.

How To Clean A Used Ssd Drive ?
I have a samsung ssd drive that i pulled out of my laptop. It still has the partitions and old os and data on it. I want to stick it in another computer and load windows 7 on it. Before i would usually just perform a low level format on a used drive but that was with spindle drives. Is there a proper way to remove the partitions and format an ssd drive? I have heard conflicting reports on this so i'm asking for help.

Installing A Ssd Into Notebook
I'm looking into installing a ssd into my notebook soon, and i'm a bit confused:
- Will i need to align my partition on w7? Is it ssd manufacturer dependent?
- I've seen reports that cloning my hd onto my ssd can be tricky, does anyone have a definitive guide/answers on how to do it properly?
- I have recovery discs for my os, is this probably the most painless way to get my os/drivers up and running?

Intel G2 Ssd Drives
I always thought the intel g2 drives were the fastest. But after looking at the specs it writes only up to 70mb? That's pretty crappy compared to ocz where its 150mb. Why do people say the intel drives are the fastest? The reads on the ocz by the specs anyway show that they are faster at both read and write.

Ssd For Desktop And Notebook
I'm thinking about moving to ssd for 2 use cases :
1) my toshiba notebook (m800), for which 60gb drive would be enough (windows 7, eclipse, openoffice and other basic stuff)
2) my main desktop, which would probably require 120gb drive (windows 7, eclipse, openoffice, steam with many games, other basic stuff), which would also have wd1001fals as data drive. Use case for both ssd drives include usage for java projects with hundreds or thousands small files. Now, i'm looking at my options, which are (prices are without vat):kintson x25-m 80gb - 243. 40
Ocz vertex 60gb - 218. 83
Ocz summit 60gb - i don't know the price yet
Ocz vertex 120gb - 361. 09
Ocz summit 120gb - 377
There are also lots of jmicron based ssd's (a-data xpg is the one with best price - 236. 26 for 128gb, but also have big write problems). No samsung or corsair ssd drives available here. Which one would you recommend and why ?

Buying to intel g2s tonight and wouldn't mind a hot-swap cradle that has lights for each hdd, or mayb a simple bracket to hold both. I looked on newegg and only found flimsy looking cheap brands for hot-swap trays. So am i stuck w/ a bracket? If i want something of quality?

Use A Ssd To Expand Ram
Im limited on my motherboard to 4gb of ram. But yet im running windows server 2008 r2. I also have sql server running on it and i have to minimize how much ram it uses. Im still hurting for ram. Now there are some things i can do, but i believe the best idea, would be to use a internal 32gb solid state drive and place my pagefile on that drive? Or is there anyway i can get the solid state drive to be recognized as pure ram instead?
Anyone else have any recommendation? I heard readyboost was really just for windows kernal 6. 0 and below. Windows 7 and windows server 2008 r2 (windows 7 server) are optimized to use solid state drives. Another options would be to use some pci card which i could add ram too. But here that was the old way of doing things.

Ssd Freeze / Stutter Problem
I recently purchased an intel 40gb ssd and have been satisfied with how "speedy" it is. My problem is that every once in a while it will seem to freeze (my os) for about half a second. If i have google chrome open it will crash it too. :/
I am running windows 7 and am not too sure if anyone else has had this problem and if so, how did they remedy it?

Ssd Drive 120gb Under $400
Due to cost, i am looking at either 120gb or 128gb. I definitely can't have less than 100gb. Flash Ssd After Install Of Win7
Just got in my new drive. I'm planning to use it as the core of my new build, upgrading from xp pro 32 to win 7 pro 64. It will be my os & key app drive, while the new 1tb caviar black will be games/apps/storage. Can i flash the ssd after the install of win 7 pro 64, or do i need to plug it into this system before i begin the rebuild & flash it before i install the new os?
Btw: having never flashed a drive before: do i need to download the update & burn it to a dvd to flash the ssd?

Separate Ssd Drives For Os And Apps
For years i have been using 3 drives in my systems, 1 for os, 1 for apps, and 1 for docs and page file. Does one see the same benefits when using ssd drives? Or does the increased sdd performance obviate dividing functions by drive? I am going to take the ssd plunge with about $350 dollars to spend. Would i be better off with:
1 30g vertex (os) + 1 60g vertex (apps)
Or
1 80g x25-m (os + apps)?
I have lots of ram. Should i put the page-file on an ssd or leave on a spindle drive?

Upgrade Ram To 2gb Or Hd To Ssd ?
As titles states what do you think would be more of an improvement: upgrading an atom system that has 1. 6ghz cpu, 1gb ram & gma950 integrated graphics on winxp.system is used for office productivity, email, & surfing. To 2gb of ram or going from 5400rpm drive to x25-m 80gb?
I'm thinking the hard-drive would be a better upgrade, though it will cost 4-5 times as much+. But it should speed up everything, instead of just ram stuff. And it will help for when there's not enough ram and the system has to go to hd/pagefile/swap-file it will be a super-fast ssd there.

Destroying Data On Ssd Drive
I've got a 60gb ocz agility drive that i have been using for a few weeks. I decided to upgrade to a larger drive and sell this one off. What is everyone using to clear the data off an ssd? Do i still need to use something like dban or will a secure erase suffice?

Ssd With Trim Support To Get Atm
I want to move from xp to the windows 7 bandwagon (mostly for dx10/11), so i'm looking at getting a new ssd (probably 80gb+). I like what i hear about the trim support in 7 too. So any suggestions on what a good ssd with trim support is? (I put performance and reliability at the top).

Which Program To Bench Intel Ssd ?
I want to make sure my drive is running up to standard, including whether or nor trim is working.could someone recommend me benchmark or test program that could accomplish this? I tried to search but i'm tired and can't seem to find much.

How Do Ssd Act When Errors Occur ?
So, i see lots of paranoia about "over using" ssd blocks - disabling search, pagefile, indexing, blah blah blah. I think it all a little silly, when no one does anything to preserve much more failure-prone mechanical disks. Furthermore, by the time you've reached the rated number of cycles the drive will be far cheaper to replace, far faster options will be out there, you'll likely think the current drive is far too small and much higher capacity options will be out there. Anyways:
A big difference i see with ssd is that it seems that more than 50% of the time mechanical disks fail in a "one day it went whack-whack-whack and now it doesn't work at all". Clearly this wouldn't have to be the case for ssds with no moving parts. If cells in an ssd started failing parity checks the data could simply be relocated to spare space (like mechanical disks do with individual blocks) and the random access performance would suffer no ill. Other than massive physical damage or total controller failure, i don't see any likely cases for ssds to suddenly become completely inoperative in the same what the mechanical drives just go "whack" or put scratches on their media. Does anyone have good info on how current ssds are programmed to handle errors? I see some decent likelihood that they could be far superior to mechanical disks and have far longer lifetimes despite the fud.

Is Ssd Slower When Connected Via Usb ?
My employers have given me a solid state drive as they have a few spares. It's a notebook drive, but i have a desktop. So my plan is to connect the ssd via usb. I will clone my old internal disk to the ssd and then i will run everything off the ssd. My question is, am i getting the full benefits of the faster ssd when connecting to it by usb? i.e. Is it faster to have the drive connected internally ?
