From Time To Time Computer Freezes
Replies: 7 | Post Date: February 13th, 2007, 02:57 AM | User: Asc | Forums: forums.devshed.comI need help diagnosing what i believe is a hardware problem, since it happens with windows and linux. From time to time my computer freezes. I cannot move the mouse pointer and there is no reaction when i press a key on the keyboard. There is no bluescreen or any other error message. Also, it is not predicatble when the computer freezes. Sometimes i can work for hours without any problems and sometimes it freezes after 5 minutes. Generally, i noticed that it freezes earlier when i use windows instead of linux. Any idea what could be the problem or what i could do to diagnose it?

Computer Freezes On Boot - Long Time To Load Windows
I was having issues with a game of mine hard locking my pc. The only way to get out of it was to hold down the power button and force the pc to power down, then boot back up. Trying to trouble shoot the game, this happened several times. Then, it started freezing on the memory test. It's not really freezing, though - if i leave it sit for a very long time ( 5 to ten minutes ), it will eventually boot into windows. Any ideas?

Loose Wire In Laptop Freezes Pc For Bits At A Time
A loose wire, i'm sure, is the culprit of the temporary freezes that hails over my presario 2800 laptop. Can anyone offer any suggestions/help?
I'm afraid by taking it to a computer repair shop that they may break it - whether it be an inexperienced mechanic working on the laptop for the 1st time and ultimately not degrounding when opening it up. I dont know too much about the mechanics but i've heard horror stories. Anyhow, has anyone had this ever happen to their laptop? Its a horrible thing to have to go through. I have to tap, shake, etc. The laptop to get it to unfreeze - just to have it happen again. I definately am sure that it is a loose wire. I even reinstalled xp to see if it was something with the operating system just in case, and just finished up with that. It is not the operating system. Definately a hardware issue.

Computer Dies When I Switch It On First Time
Every time i switch my computer on with the big button on the front of the tower, you hear the discs start up for a second or so, but then it dies. The little green light on the front stays on. If i press the big button to try to start her up again, nothing happens. I also get nothing if i press the little button that can usually be used to reboot the thing. If i switch it off and on at the back and then press the big button again, everything starts ok. It's been like this for about a week. What exactly is the problem and how do i fix it?

Computer Powers On For Brief Time Then Shuts Down
I recently assembled my first computer and went to turn it on. However, it would power on briefly, maybe 1-2 seconds, and then shut off. I tried taking things out leaving only the necessary but i have not managed to get it to post. The only time that the computer stays on (defined by all the fans spinning and the sound of the harddrive) is when i unplug my cpu power. Does this mean that the cpu is dead? Or is it simply overheating and shutting off before problems arise. Any help is very appreciated.

Hub Connect One Computer At A Time ?
Hub only lets one computer connect at a time. ? Its a linksys nh1005, not sure how to get into it to configure it, but it will allow either computer to access internet, but not at the same time. The one that isn't connected is still on the local connection. Is this just how hubs work and i need a router too or?

Excessive Computer Boot Time
I'm a certified computer technician. I'm working on my pals computer, and for the life of me i have never had such an slow boot. I did disk cleanup, followed by a defrag (which took almost a full day). In the four or so years this computer has existed i don't think it has once been defraged or cleaned up but anyways i also went into msconfig and got rid of all startup processed except the ones necessary for startup (obviously). This is a duo core (1. 66 per core) computer with 1gb ram. I figure it may be the ram however, i just checking here to see if anyone else has any ideas how i could speed up the boot, the bios is default, everything checks out okay. So disk cleanup followed by defrag and then msconfig. What did i miss? It's windows xp, so it's odd that it takes like 4 minutes to boot (even with 1gb ram).

Hardware Conflict, Computer Load Up Time Seems Longer Than It Should Be
I have the latest bios, drivers for everything (nvidia drivers for mobo, graphics card, monitor, sound blaster, etc) and updates for windows. I'm not trying to toot my horn here (well, maybe just a little hehe) but as far as i can tell, with these specs the system should be giving a fairly good performance. However, i have found that for one, the load up time seems a little longer than it should be. Secondly, game graphics have gotten choppy in some sections of far cry, and the fps in cs:source drops from around 90 to 10 when blinded by a flashbang. Up until a month ago i was using a xfx 6600gt and i wasn't getting this fps drop at all when flashed. I tried a test using 3dmark05 and ended up with a score of around 7, 500, which i gather is the average for a 7800gt?
Basically, as this is my first build, i am asking for any advice anyone might have as i feel i have missed something. Perhaps a hardware conflict or even just how the drivers have been installed?
Computer specifications:
Athlon 64 3500+
Msi k8n neo4 platinum mobo
2 gb corsair 3200c2pt ram
Xfx geforce 7800gt
Live 24! Sound blaster
550 watt psu
Windows xp home

Games Freeze All The Time
. And they do that since graphics card update. First, there was the radeon x600. It died. So i needed a new card. Was a radeon hd 2600. Installed new drivers, even reinstalled windows. Games began to freeze after a couple minutes, the only game playable was rollercoaster tycoon 2. Some time later i bought a radeon hd 3850. And again, reinstalled windows and added the latest drivers. And again! No game playable. They all work fine for about ten minutes, and then freeze. It can not be the temps as they don't go over 90 degrees, wich, according to ati ccc, is in normal range. It can not be the psu either, since its rather new and powerful enough. So what else could it be?
I thought about the mainboard, a msi ms-7046, quite some years old.could it be that it doesn't "like" the new graphics card, since its an oem-mainboard? Or that it simply is too old? Or what the fudge else.

Sata2 Transfer Time
Does one need some sort of sata2 drive to take advantage of it? Or do existing sata drives recieve the transfer rate boost as well? Furthermore, is it even necessary? Do even the 10, 000 sata drives have a low enough seek time that requires a quicker transfer time?

Wireless Mouse Operating Time
When a wireless mouse has a rating for "operating time" (such as many on newegg that say operating time: 18 months, for example), does that mean how long the battery is supposed to last, or how long the mouse is expected to live?

Pc Takes A Long Time To Boot Up
First: it takes from 20 minutes to 2 hours to boot up, i don't see anything in the monitor, but the fan in the power supply spins and the fan at top of the processor also works, only the red light of the hard disk turns on. I have tried with another hard disk that works fine in another pc, and it's the same, it takes forever to boot up. I have replace the power supply from 250 to 450 and i still have that problem. Second: after waiting that long for the pc to boot up, the cpu clock speed reads 733 mhz instead of 1700. I reset the jumper in the motherboard, to get the correct speed, but i have to do this everytime the computer has been off for a while. Are the two problems related? Is the motherboard bad? Once the pc boot ups, it works fine.

I reset the jumper in the motherboard, to get the correct speed, but i have to do this everytime the computer has been off for a while. Are the two problems related? Is the motherboard bad? Once the pc boot ups, it works fine.

Using Onboard Optical And Coaxial Out At The Same Time
I have my computer in my bedroom, and right around the corner i have my "media room". I have my computer connected via optical cable to my onkyo 707 receiver in my "media room" for when i want to watch movies or listen to music out there. I also have an onkyo 506 receiver in my bedroom, and when i want to play games or listen to music in my bedroom, i unplug the optical cable connected to my media room and plug in my optical cable connected to my bedroom. With this setup, i'm constantly switching between the 2 optical cables between my bedroom and media room setups. What i'm wondering, is can i leave my media room connected to my on-board sound via optical cable, and then connect my bedroom's receiver to the on-board sound using a coaxial cable, so that i have 2 digital cables always plugged into my on-board sound?
This way, i wouldn't have to keep switching between cables, if i wanted to watch movies in the media room, i would turn on that receiver and turn off the one in my bedroom, and when i want to play games in my bedroom, i would turn off the receiver in the media room and turn on the one in my bedroom, does that make sense?
Would this work? Would i also be able to turn on both receivers and have the same music playing out of both receivers in both rooms?

I've just bought this samsung story station 1tb 3. 5" external drive. Tbh it's my first external one. So i was wondering should i keep it on all the time, or it's better to turn it off when not in use? It's being used as multimedia storage.

It will put one as a communications device, but really, i want to have some applications (like vlc) output to spdif to my receiver which is showing the video on my tv. And i want the 3. 5mm to output from windows and everything else to my pc speakers. I can not figure it out.

Restoring Network Time Synchronization To Dc
I have 3 dcs on my domain (dc1, dc2, dc3). One is primary (dc1), and the others are only backups, set up to failure in the event that the primary fails. I was having some issues today due to time synchronization problems. I ran the dos command "net time" on one of the workstations on the domain, and it came back telling me to current time on dc3. Now, i only have dcs 1 and 2 set up to work as time servers, so i have a feeling that my time issue was because the network was viewing dc3 as the time server, and it wasn't set up to do the job. Is there a command that i can run to restore this function to the correct dc?

Connect To Internet First Time Xp Pro
I just re-installed xp on my other laptop. Xp works fine and everything, but i cannot seem to remember where to get the program on what internet connections to find/look for. I was able to connect to the internet before the re-installation, however i do not know if this re-installation was able to get the drivers for this specific internet card. I have looked for a couple hours, and cannot seem to find it. I am now thinking of trying to download the drivers on another computer and bringing the software over to the laptop. Any suggestions?

Run Time Error 8005
I get a; "run time error 8005, port already open" message when i try to open the software for a audio rta, the phonic paa2; i got the error even before i connected the device to the port. The splash screen shows with that message box on top of it. No other errors. I checked device manager and both serial ports are enabled and show clean. The first port is occupied by another device. My parrellel port os disabled since my printer is on a usb port. I e-mailed the company and waiting for a reply. I'm running 2k w/sp4 and a nforce2 chipset mb.

How To Download Files At A Certain Time From Internet?
Is there a way to program a computer to download files at a certain time? I have satellite internet, so downloads are limited. The satellite company offers free downloading between 3-5am. Is there a way to program my computer to start downloads at that time without having to physically be in front of the computer?
