Repair Drive - Recover The Data

I have a 20gig hd with two partitions one 5gig for os and the other 15gig for data and programs etc. The other day i turned my machine on and the d: drive (15gig partition) was missing. It just didnt show the partition at all. Now somehow i managed to get it to display the partition but every time you go to open the drive it says it isnt formatted and needs to be. Now i am not sure what has happened but i am guessing it has got something to do with the file system. I am sure that the pc hasnt wiped all the data of my drive so it should be recoverable, i just would like to know if anyone knows how to solve the problem or if there are any programs available that will help repair te drive/recover the data.

Analyze Cd Drive To Repair

I bought a new 52x cd-rom from newegg.com few months ago. But within the last week it won't read any cd. It shows connected to my system, and thank gosh i got a dvd recorder too, also a nec. Anyhow, when i put a cd in, it tries to read it, then the read light goes out. It use to not read once and awhile, now it won't read anything at all. I have moved my tower case a few times because i installed a new mobo, but i don't see how that can mess up the reading mechanics of the cd drive. Anyhow, is there any freeware i can get that can analyze my cd drive? Or what things can i check to try and fix it myself? Is there any way to repair it at all? If i have to, i will buy a new cd drive. It was only $20 from newegg so not a big deal, i was just hoping it would last longer than 4 months, heh. So if i do buy a new drive, which one might be better? Tech, or sony, or what? Thanks for the advice on things i can try.

Recover Corrupt Hard Drive

I have a western digital 1tb hard drive which i accidentally dropped yesterday. Since then, at first it would keep connecting and disconnecting. The sound effect that windows plays when something connects or disconnects would keep repeating. Now, it says location not found, w: is not accessible, and parameter is incorrect. It says i can't access the disk without formatting it. Which i haven't done. If it matters, it remembers that it's w:, and it remembers that it's a my book (the name of it from western digital). That's about it though, it doesn't remember what i named it (what it said in my computer) or anything else. It just says local disk. I don't know if i should do error-checking or something like that. I'm just not touching anything without advice. There are a lot of programs suggested online that recover drives, but i don't know where to start. I don't want to risk what was on the drive, which is *possibly* replaceable stuff, but i want to recover it if i can. If anybody could help my situation, please do! I was in immediate shock when i saw that it wasn't reading. I also don't have much money to spare on this, so if there are any solutions, preferably free, that would be great. Lots of thumbs up and down please so i know who has good words of advice.

How To Physically Repair Hard Drive Motor ?

I've got a 400gb, 7200rpm seagate st3400832a. I knocked it over in my sleep while it was running and it died. No computer bios or os will recognize it now. A voltmeter shows that it is getting power, and the motor is getting power, too, but the platters won't spin and the heads don't move. The motor gets hot right away, as if it's trying to spin but stuck. The platters, too, won't spin when i try to move them with my finger. But i don't see anything that's locking them. Any hints about what i could do to try to recover the drive? I'm definitely a data recovery newbie. (Well, i can use software, but that won't matter if the platters can't spin!)

Recover Files From A Hard Drive On A Corrupted Windows Xp

I'm trying to recover files from a hard drive with a corrupted version of xp home. It says windows did not shut down properly last time and gives me the 3 safe mode options, last config that worked, and start normally. If i go to safe mode, immediate blue screen and error code. If i go to last config that worked it shows the windows icon, then the time bar freezes and goes to blue screen. I need to recover important document files for my friends father asap, so i was looking into hard drive enclosures, but am fairly unsure if it will work the way i am planning. Would the enclosure be a way to pull the files off the drive? I don't mind wiping it and re-installing windows, but i need these files.

Connecting 2 Pcs & Using 1st Pc Cd Drive To Repair Windows On 2nd Pc

My friends acer needs to repair windows but no cd drive can i connect it to my computer and use my cd drive?

Answer:- you *can* designate your optical drive as a shared resource, and then access it across the network from the acer with no optical drive. But then it would only be accessible when you were within windows on the acer. So, it depends completely on exactly how you need to use the optical drive to repair the acer. If you mean, can i use the optical drive on my computer to reinstall windows or perform a repair install of windows on an acer with no optical drive. The answer is no.

Recover Files From Laptop Hard Drive With Windows 2000

Boss at work has managed to crash his laptop and of course has not done a backup in 3 years, now he wants me to try and recover some of his files. This is a windows 2000 system and what it is doing is coming up with the following message on boot up. A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Now i thought maybe the system files where corrupted, we got one of these fix your disk programs and tried running it, it says that both the partition table and boot sector are ok so no joy there, had a look on this forum and found a thread with link to ntfs4dos and ran that, it says the nt ntfs partition is not initialized. Finally tried coping on the system files again using the windows 2000 repair option still no joy. Does anyone have any other ideas i can try, can i some how link the hard drive via a converter cable to my desk top (maybe a stupid question, but hay i'm clutching at straws), or do i just send it back and tell him that it will cost 350 to get the files and here is an essay on the virtues of keeping backups. (Probably won't do last bit as end up getting fired).

Dvd Rom Drive, Flash Hard Drive Slowing Data Transfer Speed

Issue a: when i put a cd/dvd into my dvd, the system (my computer/properties) recognizes the hardware, but it will not play. (Drive letter "d". )

Issue b: my computer will not recognize my data (flash?) Cards from my digital camcorder/camera. Issue c: my computer's hard drive (drive letter "c") once accepted my firewire uplink (1333). Now, my nle (pinnacle studio 9 plus) give the error message "drive c is not capable of capturing dv data", meaning it's date transfer rate is too slow. How can i fix these issues? Do i have to buy a new hard drive?

How Much Data Can You Put On A Drive ?

Is there a limit on how much data can be placed on a 20gb, 80 gb, 120 gb, etc. Drive. In other words do you need to have a certain amount of space (say 5 gb or percentage) available. Also does this apply to both a drive that contains an operating system and a drive that only contains data?

Get Data Off A Raid 1 Drive

I have a raid 1 set up with the onboard via vt6410 ide raid controller of my asus p4p800 deluxe mobo. Sadly, i think the mobo is dead (might be the cpu . Not sure). In any case, i can't access the data on my drives with this pc. The question is, how do i get the data off my drive?

Would it be possible to just plug one of the raid 1 drives into another pc ide port as a slave, and access the data? (My guess is i can't, but want to make sure there's not a really simple solution here. )

If this won't work, can i buy a different raid controller, install it into another computer, plug my two drives into this controller as a slave, have it recognize that the drives are already in a raid 1 configuration, and allow me to remove the data?

Does the raid controller need to be the exact same as the original (this would suck b/c as i mentioned, it was the onboard controller of a long since discontinued mobo). Is there any way to determine which raid controllers would be compatible with my raid 1 drives?

Delete Data From Hard Drive

I have to rma a drive back to western digital. It is still functional so i would like to wipe the thing clean of data first. What do you guys recommend for doing such a thing? I would prefer a windows based solution. I would hook the drive up to a working pc as a second drive and go from there. I don't really want to make a boot disk and go that route. Any suggestions?

Which 1.5tb Drive To Get For Data Backup ?

I'd like to get either the seagate or wd green 1. 5tb drives for backup, but both have bad ratings. Have the seagates really improved in quality? I already have a few wd10eads drives and am very happy with them, so i'd prefer the wd15eads esp since it'll run cooler and speed is not an issue. But that has even worse ratings than the seagate, and its more $$ as well.

1tb - 2tb Data Drive

I was planning on getting a new 1-2tb storage drive for my next build (primary will be a ssd). 1tb should be enough, but i am willing to spend more for a 1. 5 or 2tb if it makes sense. Assuming the ssd may only be an 80gb, i will be running some games off the storage drive, so i would like some performance. I'm really not too familiar of the world outside of wd, as i have been burned by almost every other companies, but am willing to listen. Right now, i'm planning on getting the wd1001fals for ~$100. Is there a better option? It doesn't have to be silent, but i don't want it sitting down there rattling either. http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16822136284

Any other recommendations?

Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.
