Sata Drives Recognized By Bios But Not Detected By Vista
Replies: 14 | Post Date: 12-16-2007, 09:58 PM | User: Jenesis | Forums: forums.techpowerup.comWhat it says on the tin, really. I installed two new maxtor 250gb sata drives this afternoon, as companions to my 500gb main c:/ drive. They are picked up in the bios just fine, but vista can't see them. They don't show up in disk management or the device manager, so i can't format them or do anything with them. I've looked through the manual and the bios very thoroughly, but i can't find anything wrong. Everything that should be enabled is enabled. It's an msi k9n mainboard. I should stress that this is not a raid setup - i just want two extra hds.

2nd Sata Drive Detected In Bios But Not In Windows Disk Management
I have an intel d915gev motherboard with the latest bios. My primary hard drive is a seagate 200gb sata (st3200822as) and i have windows xp mce 2005 sp2 running off of it. I just added a second sata hard drive, a 500gb seagate (st3500631ns). This second hard drive gets detected in the bios and even gets detected by spinrite 6. 0 when i boot up. However, it's not showing up anywhere in windows. It's unformatted, unactivated, so i don't expect it to show up in windows explorer, but it's not even in device manager or disk management. I tried changing to a different sata port, even used three different sata cables, but to no avail. I've also done all windows updates and tried to update my ide/sata drivers from device manager. Any ideas please?

Sata Drives No Longer Recognized
I have vista 64bit installed on the c-partition, which is a raid 0 array of two 500gb drives. I have windows 7 installed on a 750 gb drive. I have an additional 500gb drive installed as well. All sata drives, along with two sata optical drives. Externally i have two esata acommdata 1tb drives and two 750gb drives on this machine. Motherboard is gigabyte ga-p35-ds3r w/ intel ch9r raid controller. In both the bios and either os, the external harddrives are not recognized. I'm stumped.

Seagate Sata Hard Drives Detected Incorrectly
I have 2 seagate baracuda 7200. 7 sata hard drives (not in a raid configuration). One is a st3160023as (windows instalation) and the other is a st380013as 80gb. Both of these drives are recognized in the bios and by windows correctly but. When i open any program hat reads the model number of the drive they both read as st3160023as. This is realy annoying because in monitoring programs only one temperature is detected because the program thinks they are both the one hard drive. Can someone who knows something about this problem please help me. Ps i dont know if it will help but i have four sata ports on my mobo. The drives are in prots 1 and 2.

Sata Hdd Do Not Show Up In Windows Vista But Shows In Bios
I just bought a new computer with one sata hard drive in it. Everything is fine with the computer. I had an old computer that had two hard drives in it. Ither was one sata hard drive from my old computer which was a secondary hard drive used for storing media. It worked properly in that computer. I then proceeded to plug it into my new computer. Now, only the original hard drive in my new computer shows up under my computer. My secondary sata drive only shows up in the bios. How can i get this to work so that i can enjoy my music and videos on my new computer?

Bios Not Picking Up Sata Drives
I have three sata hard drives which aren't being recognized by bios:
Samsung spinpoint t hd400lj 400gb sata-ii 8mb (7, 200rpm)
Western digital caviar se 200gb, wd2000jd (7, 200rpm)
Western digital raptor 74gb, wd740gd (10, 000rpm)
On: evga nforce 680i
The samsung is brand new and the two wd drives were working in my old system. Now they all seem dead. Is it possible they've all died from static charge during installation?
I've built a new system, everything seems fine apart from the hdd's not being picked up. I'm not running raid. I've tried booting to winxpsp2 install disk, windows didn't pick them up. Even though i'm not running raid, should i press f6 during install and install raid drivers?
I've also tried:
Clear cmos. Different sata cables. Different sata power cables. Different jumper settings. One drive at a time.

Hd Not Recognized In Bios
I have been putting parts into and out of my computer for a little while now (since october) and have run into minor issues which i was able to diagnose and repair myself. But then. I ordered a 8 gb of g. Skill 1333 for my xfx 780i not realizing that it doesn't support it. To fix the problem, i ordered the evga 790i that supports the gdd3 ram. While taking my computer apart to put in the new mb i accidentally snapped of the small plastic piece that holds the sata cable to the hd itself. So i ordered the new hd (i was running 2 wd 640 gb in raid) and put it in my case. Plugged everything back in and it posted first try. But the problem is that my computer doesn't recognize the "old" raided drive in the bios (or anywhere else for that matter). The new drive shows up just fine.

I have my 2nd computer and it stopped working for some odd reason. When i boot it up it does not find a keyboard. I have tried multiple keyboards usb and ps2 one of them was the one i am using right now to write this. It was working fine a week ago and no nothing. The computer powers up and the bios posts and it goes into booting up but will not pick up a keyboard. It even shows that no keyboard was detected at post. - Motherboard

Anyone have any ideas whats going on? Did the mother board bite the dust?

Hard Drive Not Recognized On Vista 64 Bit
I physically installed the wd1600ys western digital 160gb caviar hd into the computer. Pata and sata cables. However it is not recognizing it. I had the old install disc for xp version which will not work on my vista. Now that being said i am unable to find the drivers needed for my computer to recognize it. I believe it needs western digital tools. I called the tech support at western digital and they stated the drivers are only available for vista 32 bit. My vista reads 32 programs. He couldn't tell me where those drivers were. He was pretty aggravated when he picked up probably because someone called him and complained that their cup holder( disc drive) was broke when it spilled the drink. Please direct me to a website where i may download the driver to recognize my hd.

Sata Drive Spinning Up Yet Not Detected
I have a maxtor stm3500320as sata hard disk drive that i have been using for nearly two years. The drive just vanished from both windows and bios. It spins up when the pc boots but is not detected. I tried switching cables, using both seagate and maxtor tools. Is there anything for me to try before trying the warranty. For information on the hardware: everest report

Sata Hard Drive Not Detected When Installing Windows Xp
I decided i'll reformat it. When me and my friend tried to reformat my computer (through installing with the cd, since i can't find a way to reformat otherwise), the screen that asks where you'd like to install windows showed nothing. As in, it said i had no hard drives, and after a while, it freaks out and just restarts. I think i heard of some way to make that work, because it has happened to many people before. If anyone can help me make my computer detect the hard drive, i would be grateful. I heard there's a way to do it without a floppy drive as well (for some reason, apparently you need one, despite the fact that most computers don't use them anymore).

Asus A8v: Sata Drive Recognized As Scsi
Well i've finally moved out of my shuttle and into a full size atx case. My thanks to freedom eclipse and mkmods for helping me out by selling their old components. So i'm all up and running and now it's just the teething issue(s). Why on earth does xp have to be a dick? I mean, when i got the machine up and running from the very first boot. It worked brilliant. Until another reboot after reinstalling some applications (i.e. 3dmark06) it now says my sata hdd is scsi. Which means i can't use it. Now my mobo has two raid controllers, one via and one promise. I've used both, disabled both (bios and windows) and i still get my soddin' hdd show in device manager as flippin' scsi.

Drives Not Being Properly Detected
It's been a while since i've posted but over the past few weeks i've been running into a problem that seems to be occurring more and more frequently. I figured i'd head this issue off before it becomes fatal. The problem is that upon boot-up / post the two hard drives are not detected and the system boots to a boot disk failure. When i restart the system and enter the bios, the primary drive (sata1) is not detected at all and the secondary drive (sata2) shows a weird name and does not post all of the specs. When i enter sata1 and sata2 and tell the bios to automatically detect drives, it picks up the primary drive and enters the correct information for the secondary drive. I have actually experienced some weird issues with this build since inception and have changed out various pieces of hardware but i have never done anything with the motherboard (besides update the bios). I'm thinking that maybe the southbridge controller is dying or some other part of the motherboard. Any suggestions or thoughts?
The rig with the problem has the following specs:
Gigabyte ga-g33m-ds2r
Intel core 2 duo e6600
Primary drive: western digital wdc wd3200aaks
Secondary drive: samsung hd501lj
Os: windows 7 x64 professional

Hard Drives Sometimes Are Not Detected When Booting
I've recently come across a strange problem regarding my hard drives: at random times, when i power on my pc, some of my hard drives aren't detected in bios (including my main os hard drive). I panicked at first because i don't feel like replacing my velociraptor and basically have no computer to use during the school semester. But sometimes, the "missing" hard drives will be detected upon reboot/start up. It's a really annoying problem. Any ideas how to fix this?

Blank Discs In Drives Not Recognized
I am trying to use windows media to burn audio cd's. I have done this hundreds of times before w/o a problem. Recently, i had to reload windows onto my system. Since then i have not been able to burn audio cd's using windows media. Wm seems to be working fine in most repects. I can rip cd's onto my hard drive and can set up playlists as i always have. I can set up a list of songs to burn in the wm task pane however, when i push the "burn" button at the bottom of the task pane my cd drive opens (expelling the blank cd) and a comment box opens up. The comment box asks me to load a blank cd and that wm will start the burn when it recognises that the blank cd is loaded. I close the disc tray with the cd still in it and it still won't recognise the disc. I have two burners and this happens with both and yes, i have changed the pane option to select the proper drive location for the burning. I am sure the cd's i am using are writeable as they are the same cds i was using before i had to reload windows xp and it all worked fine then. The only thing i can figure is that during the set up of w/m, after i loaded xp, i failed to set the proper buttons and whistles. The drives appear to be running properly as i can view dvds and yes, burn from cd to cd using roxio however, roxio puts up the same comment box when trying to burn the w/m playlist thru the roxio software. I have searched for a qualified site referencing the trouble shooting of w/m and i have seen that others have similar if not the exact troubles that i am having however, there are never any answers to solve the problem.

Sata Drive Not Seen In Bios, But Seen In Windows 7
I am having a really peculiar problem i was wondering if anyone can shed some light on. I am trying to add a second sata drive to my system. It's a western digital wd5000aaks. The bios does not recognize it, and at first win7 doesn't either, but after 10-15 minutes, windows 7 sees it just fine. On reboot it disappears, only to be seen again after a period of time (with any data on it still intact). I've tried using a different data cable and power cable. If i take the primary drive out of the system and put this drive in its place, the computer will hang, never giving the option to get into the bios. I've tried having a long startup sequence, but that hasn't helped. I've tried setting the speed down to 1. 5 gbit/s with no success. I actually thought it was a problem with the drive, so i returned it, but the second one does the exact same thing. Any ideas about the drive that makes it visible after x period of time goes by?

If i take the primary drive out of the system and put this drive in its place, the computer will hang, never giving the option to get into the bios. I've tried having a long startup sequence, but that hasn't helped. I've tried setting the speed down to 1. 5 gbit/s with no success. I actually thought it was a problem with the drive, so i returned it, but the second one does the exact same thing. Any ideas about the drive that makes it visible after x period of time goes by?

Bios Recognizes Sata Drive, Xp Does Not
When i boot up my computer, i see my hard drive's serial id# flash on the screen. However, when i try to install windows xp, xp tells me that there are no hard drives available. I've tried to install both xp32bit and xp64- xp64 isn't supposed to require extra drivers (they're supposed to be on the install disc, says western digital), xp32 is. I tried xp32 just to see if the 32bit drivers would work, but it still can't find the drive. I've run wd's hard drive diagnostic utilities - they see the drive just fine - and the tests all pass. There is data on the drive, a few ntfs partitions that i don't mind getting rid of. But when i try a different eide drive with existing partitions, xp offers to delete those partitions for me, so i'm sure it's not just because the disk hasn't been formatted recently. I don't have any other sata compatible computers to try the drive out on. Does anyone have any suggestions for things to try?

Sata Drivers Required During Installation Of Vista
I am trying to clean install vista ultimate on a nec versa s3200 laptop. During installation, the part where the harddrives need to be choosen, i find that vista asks for device drivers and i cant see any of the 3 partitions on my hdd, not at all, the screen is blank. But the damn cd which came along with nec does not have any sata or raid drivers, so i am practically stuck. The options are that i need to find out what is the make of the harddrive and then try to download the sata drivers for that particular make of hdd and feed it to vista during installation - is that the right thing to do?
Alternatively i am also planning to create a win 98 boot disk on a cd, boot the laptop on the cd, format/s c: ( dunno if it will format it as ntfs or fat ) then access the d: drive and fire up the vista installation from there, a dump of the vista resides in d: you see. Will it still ask me for the drivers? And will it reformat c: to ntfs during installation?
Am i totally wrong in assuming that the drivers being asked by vista is sata drivers, where will i get these drivers and where in bios can i find out the motherboard details.

I have just built my first computer and cant get vista ultimate to install on my barracuda 7200. 10 sata 3. 0gb/s 500-gb hard drive. When i get to the screen that asks you to select your hd to install vista on, it recognizes my drive but has a message on the bottom of the screen stating. "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation. "
Is their anything i can do to get windows installed on this hd?

Can't Install Vista Or Win7 On Sata Drive
I thought it would be simple. Does it matter which sata slots are used for a boot drive. There are 8 on my board 4 controlled by intel ichr7 and the others by marvel. Attempts to install windows result in error message that the drive is configured as active in the bios and suggest using diskpart utility to clean the drive? Does sata use master/slave? The hd is a wd caviar blue 300gb. What am i doing incorrectly?

Using Sata Drives And Sata Cc
1. Can you plug/unplug sata devices without problems like usb devices?
2. If i get a sata controller card can i also go ahead and add what sata devices i want to add before booting up, or do i need to install it then turn off the computer and then plug them in?
3. What scc would you recommend? The more sata ports the better.

Bios Doesn't Recognize Hard Drives
I've just put together a new build and i can't get my motherboard bios to recognize my hard drives. I want to install windows 7x64
Motherboard: msi p55-gd65
Hard drives: ocz 60gb agility ssd
Wd black 1tb
Psu: corsair hx850
I have tried using different sata cables. Plugging into different sata slots on the motherboard. I even tried switching around where power cables are plugged. Currently, my motherboard only recognizes my sata bd rom (regardless of where i plug my bd rom sata). I am hoping that both my drives aren't dead.

2 Sata Drives In One Pc
I'm aware this may very well be a very basic question, but i'm going to ask it anyway, before i go ahead and commit myself to it later this morning. I'm putting in my new wd 500gb sataii (5000aaks) hard-drive tomorrow in replacement for my old 80gb sata maxtor hd. I'm hoping to see a big performance increase! Anyway, i'm stuck on backing up all my old files from the maxtor because;
A) my dvd-r drive blows and won't work. And
B) network seems to not be responding, so can't copy across any files to my old mans pc. So i'm sitting there stuck, with at least 10gb's worth needing to be backed up. My old man comes in and suggests i unplug the old 80gb, plug in the new 500gb and set it to 1st boot device in bios, setup windows and get it all up and running. Then, plug in the 80gb hd, set it to 2nd boot device in bios, delete windows and then simply copy across the files from the 80gb to the 500gb, using the 80gb as just a dud hard-drive. I've never done this before, and while it may seem basic, i just want to know if this is possible - if so, is there anything i should know first and will it have any performance impact on my pc at all?

Sata With Pata Drives
I have been working on this for the past couple of days. The boys over at pronetworks helped get me set up and at least in so i could install windows xp pro and move forward but i have another seagate drive that's a pata (what does the p stand for?). I have a:
Gigabyte ga-8i945p-g socket t (lga 775) intel 945p atx intel motherboard
Intel pentium 4 531 prescott 800mhz fsb lga 775 em64t processor
Seagate barracuda 7200. 9 sata ncq 3gb/s st3160812as 160gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache sata 3. 0gb/s hard drive
And another fairly new seagate pata drive. The trouble, as least for me, is that i am used to regular ide drives. I don't know anything about raid and got this sata drive by accident (didn't read up on that because i didn't know better. Honest mistake but it's working fine and i'm happy. The read issue is there is only one normal ide slot. I have my two optical drives in there (empress dvd writer as master, yamaha cdrw drive as slave) as i use both, the yamaha more than the dvd writer but i need them both available. So there is no other ide channel that will allow me to hook up this other ide connector drive which has all my music and a couple of other very useful partitions on board there. So what do i do?
Is there a converter kit that i can get to hook up the pata drive to make it work through one of the other 3 remaining sata connnectors? That seems like the most elegant solution. Learning raid is not really high on my list but if it's easy enough and it works then i'm open. The bios are quite strange conpared to my other gigabyte board i have in my older computer so it took me a while to figure all that out since most of the intergrated peripherals area deals mostly with ata, raid and sata and making them all work together.
