Western Digital Passport Vs. Iomega Ego Hard Drives
I was looking at getting a portable hard drive to store some music and movies on when i go on trips and was looking at these two brands for their 500 gb hard drives and was just wondering which ones you guys thought were better or if you had any problems i should be worried about with the ones you bought.

Western Digital Elements Vs Passport
I'm looking on newegg and there's a $10 difference between a 500gb passport and their element hard drive. There's an insignificant difference in size and both are usb powered. The only difference i can see from wd's website is the passport might have backup software. Anyone else notice a big difference between the two before i buy one?

Western Digital Hard Drive Partition And Format
I have a western digital caviar 11200 i'm trying to partition and format but having problems. Actually i have 3 old drives that i'm cleaning up and going to sell, 2 worked fine but not the wd drive. After putting it in i boot up the computer and it detects the wd drive as the 1st drive and dvd drive as the 3rd and cdrw as the 4th. It doesn't detect my 40gig drive at all. When doing the other 2 drives it would detect my 40gig hard drive as the 1st and the other drive as 2nd. I have tried all the jumper settings, master, slave and single. Nothing works. What am i doing wrong? Is there anything else i should try. I know this drive works because it was taken out of a working machine 2 weeks ago.

Western Digital Wd800jb 80 Gig Hard Drive With Pentium 2
I bought a western digital wd800jb 80 gig and put it in my server for more space. The computer is kinda old, pentium 2. The original drive is 4 gigs, so you can see my problem, after installing apache, mysql, php, hmailserver, perl, and other things, i have about 280megs left. I want to do a partition copy from one drive to the new one. But i cant get the computer to regognise the new drive at all. The drive powers up. I have messed with the settings on the jumpers on both drives and tried ide cables and nothing works.could this be a bios problem, like the computer is so old it cant handle a big drive or multiple drives? In the system setup it shows the settings for primary and slave on both ide channels but when i goto select the primary slave it doesnt show any drive available.

Western Digital Hard Drives Model Wd300 And Wd400 Issue
I have a friend who needs the logic board of a wd300 which i have a hdd of same model (same than his) however i currently have some data in that one so im not really willing to give him the logic board, i do have a dead (which logic board is ok) wd400, looking at them the logic board is exactly the same, however who knows if its physically and "logically" the same board. Thats why i'm asking, does anyone know the facts?, Did western digital harddrives model wd300 and wd400 have the same logic board?. I have both disks here, logic board apart looks the same exact thing, however i'm not sure. Anyone?

Noisy Western Digital Black Drive
I own 1tb wd black and 1tb wd green drive and both very silent with my v351b case with the panels off. However building my cousin's computer with 1tb and 750gb black drives, they are quite very noisy. I can hear the clicks and seeking from the next room. I ran hdtune pro test and it all seem to come out fine. The case is also a lian li that uses rubber mounts. But the sound difference from my black drive to his really concerns me. What would you guys do? Should i try to do an rma? Drives were bought from amazon.

Western Digital Mybook Essential Drive Performance And Speed
Can you guys do me a favor? Or at least those of you with a western digital mybook essential external storage drive. And windows 7 64 bit operating system. Move a very large folder of files from your mybook drive to your c: desktop or similar location and then tell me while it is transferring what speed of transfer rate you are getting ?
I am only getting usually 13 to 14 mb/second transfer rates and it takes forever to transfer 80 gigs or more from one location to another. And this is happening on a brand new hp pavilliaion intel i7 pc with 8 gig of ram. Anyone getting getting much better transfer rates from your mybook essential and if so what kind of system is allowing you to get them?

Computer Won't Identify Western Digital 1tb Drive
I just bought a new hard drive, and i can't get windows to detect it (at all). I can see it in the bios - but when i click "auto detect, " the computer locks up. I hear can hear it spin up when the computer starts - though it sounds a little funky, labored and noisy. Then again, maybe this is what the newer drives sound like?
I tried putting it in an external enclosure. When i do this, the device manager can find it under the name "disk drive" but disk manager can't. It's still not operational. The drive is western digital 1tb 7200 rpm 32mb cache sata 3. 0gb/s 3. 5

Western Digital Hd Problem
Ok so my dad has a dell that came with a 20gb seagate hard drive and he bought a new western digital 80gb hard drive. So after we set it to slave, got it to detect it, and formatted it the stupid thing only says it has like 2gb of space. We tried formatting it over and over but it keeps coming up as 2gb. Anybody have any idea as to what we could do to get it to detect the full 80gb?

250gb Western Digital Hd Issues
My problem is as follows:
1. I bought a 1st gen. Serial ata western digital caviar (7200rpm) with a capacity of 250gb to home into my system build [i won't bore with the rest of the set-up, unless anybody needs the extra information?>
2. The bios shows the drive as 250gb. 3. Windows xp professional only recognises 127gb of the hard drive, even with sp1 installed. 4. Diskmgmt. Msc shows a healthy system of 127. 99 gb with no available unpartitioned spaces. 5. Western digital provide a partitioning tool together with a knowledge base article [ http://wdc. Custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc. Cfg/ph. Ba%2a%2a&p_li=# ]. As i can understand, this can only be used on an unformatted drive. This would not be a huge problem were it not for the fact that it is the only hd in my system and i would prefer not to have to reformat. The other worry for me is that in step 7 of the western digital knowledge base article, the following question is asked: "[are you] certain system supports drives larger than 137 gb?". I'm not sure whether by 'system' they are referring to the bios [in which case good, as i know the bios is happy with the drive] or the operating system [in which case i would imagine to be bad since my operating system would not yet be installed and so neither would sp1 - would this not cause an issue?>
6. I have looked at microsoft knowledge base article 303013 [how to enable 48-bit logical block addressing support for atapi disk drives in windows xp], but as i have been awake for the past three days, my brain will just not work [please excuse any stray typos i may have made], so i do not want to attempt anything until i know for sure i have understood their advice correctly. _6. 1 so this is how my caffeine fuelled brain understands microsoft knowledge base article 303013:
_requirements:
_6. 1. 1 atapi.sys needs to be version 5. 1. 2600. 1135, so i have downloaded the hotfix provided in microsoft knowledge base article 331958. _6. 1. 2 a 48-bit lba-compatible bios - am i to assume that since my hard drive is recognised as 250gb in the bios that this is the case?
_6. 1. 3 hard disk exceeding 137gb - hmm, yes the root of my problems [i should've just bought 2x100gb drives instead]. _6. 1. 4 windoes xp sp1 - installed 21/03/2006. _6. 2 then, the instructions on microsoft knowledge base article 303013 advise that to enable 48-bit lba support by using an unattended installation with the microsoft system preparation (sysprep) tool, i have to follow certain steps [i'm sure i'll follow these when awake - although if any additional advice could be provided i would be most grateful]. _6. 3 if i follow the microsoft procedure, will i have 2 partitions to the drive [i would much prefer to have just the one]. My question is, considering the problems i outlined above, should i follow procedure in microsoft knowledge base article 303013 or should i reformat my hard drive and use the manufacturer provided partitioning utility?

Format Western Digital Caviar Re Wd1600yd
I am building my first system. I have two new wd hard drives, and when installing xp it says the drives are not compatible. I didn't knew i had to first format them. A friend told me to go to western digital site, download the utilities for my particular model, and create a bootable "utilities" cd (i would use my laptop for this) and use it to start up the new pc and format the drives. Then i should be able to install wxp. Problem is i can not find the exact model i have in wd site, and have not been able to find "utilities" there. What to do? My hdd is western digital caviar re wd1600yd

Western Digital 40gb Only Shows 20gb
I have 3 western digital "wd400bb" hard drives that all having the same problem where they show up as only 20gb drives in windows. I've tried them in two machines, one dell piii, (win2k server), and one gateway piii (win2k3 server). The bios in both machines displays the model number "wd400", but then windows disk management just shows a single block of 18. 64gb. I've tried deleting and recreating this partition, but 18. 64gb is the max that windows will let me create. I tried downloading the western digital "data lifeguard" utilities, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Western Digital 180gb Memory Issue
I'm in high school and my dell isn't exactly the fastest piece of tech around. So to compensate, i went and bought a wd 180gb passport for 100$ to store all my media on. Well, that was at the end of the summer in september. I had a weird problem with it, because it said i "had insufficient memory". Even though i had filled less than half of it, yet i couldn't add any more files. Stupid. So i assumed it was broken and sent it back in for a new one. Now, i have a new one i got back a couple weeks ago, and it's giving me the same problem. Here are the specs:
Device size: 152588 mb
Current profile data size: 951 mb
Device available space: 151552 mb

Rescue Files From Western Digital 20gb
My old computer died and the power supply burned out; i replaced it but the c: drive has a "short" in it, i think some diodes look burnt. Western digital 20gb hard drive, i think all i need is the printed circuit board that has the power connector and the ide cable pins all it has printed on the board is: topsearch ts-m-8vdc 94v-o. It also has a barcode sticker: 0000 001068-000 b x w 0x 14 kj9t 5 00 67 17 0 1173
Underneath there's a sticker that reads: v7354. I would like to find place that could sell me this particular board or maybe a used wd disk that shares the same printed circuit board, so i can rescue some files on this one.

Does Western Digital Look Through Data On Warranties Drives That Are Returned ?
Does western digital look through data on warranties drives that are returned ? I have a few years worth of tax returns among many other software files on my my-book that just died. It still warrantied but i don't want some schmuck getting my tax info if they start going through drives that are returned to them because they are defective.

Are The Western Digital 2tb 32 / 64mb Cache Drives Server Reliable ?
I was considering the green western digital drives. I wanted to start off with 2tb's for the entire house. I was going to get the green drives, but have recently read about issues with them. About both the 32mb & 64mb cache versions. Are they really reliable as all wd drives usually are, or are these an exception?
I was going for lower power usage and quietness, but maybe just normal 2tb black drives would be more reliable? I was told seagate's were a bit noiser so that just leaves western digital.

Western Digital Time Limited Error Recovery (tler) With Raid
Just wanted to write up my experiences with my raid problems. I have four of the western digital caviar se16 500 gb wd5000aaks 16 mb sata-ii 300 mb/s hard drive models. Previously i had them configured in a 2. 0 tb (1. 5 tb usable) array on my silicon image 3114 pci sata-i 150 mb/s raid 0, 1, 5 onboard controller with firmware 5. 4. 03. One day i lost came home to find that 3 drivers dropped out of the array and only 1 drive was left and that the array was destroyed. Luckily the array was used mostly for archive storage for videos that i routinely backed up to dvd's so i didn't lose any data. (I presume that only the one drive that was left in the array was the cause of the problem, timing out too long while doing error recovery on a bad sector, that actually caused the other 3 drives from being dropped, instead of vice versa as it should have happened. )
None of the utilities that silicon image provides were able to restore the array from the other 3 drives, even though the drives that dropped should have been able to be brought online as an array and the single drive left in the array should have been able to be brought back in and rebuilt. I e-mailed the vendor with a complete case report and all details but nobody responded. An understandable experience with a second-rate foreign vendor that mostly supplies motherboard manufacturers with crappy software raid chips. (The array while it was operational for many months was dog slow because it was software raid5 and the parity calculations were interrupting the cpu constantly on every write making my system slow and unresponsive any time i would perform any extended writes to the array. Learned my lesson to never use silicon image pci based software raid5 and recommend against these chips now to everyone. )
After that experience i took my drives off the cheap silicon image controller and made a nvidia raid1 (mirror) array with 2 x 500 gb and then took the other two drives to be used for external storage for on-site and off-site storage drives. A few months back i came back home to find that one of the drives in the new array with an error status. After rebooting the system and re-adding the drive to the array everything worked fine without any errors. Last week the same thing happened again and the drive dropped from the array again. I re-added it and no errors were found and the array is running again. Read more at the forum.

Portable Hard Drive - 2.5"
I have a sandisk usb cruzer micro 8gb flash drive that is nearing it's full capacity. On it, i have documents, music, and family photos (not a great way to backup my crap) and i only have close to 300mb left. I'm looking for a decent-speed, low power, low profile portable hard drive. Basically, this new drive will serve as a portable backup drive for my music, docs, and photos before i throw them on a permanent whs or bigger backup drive (which i have yet to get/build). It'll help free up space on my flash drive so i can use that as my daily portable while only using this new portable drive when needed. Requirements here:
-Must be 2. 5"
-At least 250gb - 320gb. I'm leaning more toward 320gb since the price difference is only like $10. Even though i probably won't use it's full capacity, i like to have that sense that i'll have room for more. -Low power, low profile, decent speed (as mentioned above)
-Usb 2. 0 should be fine. Preferably, 1 usb 2. 0 connection. I've seen some enclosures with a usb y-split with 2 usb ports for power? Something with drives over 250gb?
-Can be a hd + enclosure or a ready in box external drive. Which ever is cheaper and meets criteria. -Let's keep it as cheap as possible - under $75 - $80?
What i've been looking at so far:
- Apparently fastest mobile hd in terms of avg. Latency? - 4. 2ms
+Slim enclosure for ~$15
Or
http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16822136243
I'm usually a seagate fanboy but wd has better price/gb ratio for these drives. I'm open to all suggestions though.

Sync Samsung Portable Hard Drive
How do i connect my samsung portable hard drive to sync in my car after reformatting it? I reformatted my hard drive because it was starting to spaz out a little, but my car doesn't recognize it anymore when i put it in the usb port. I use it for playing mp3's in the car. What do i do? Maybe i reformatted it incorrectly because that is the first time i've reformatted something since the floppy days.

60gb As An Os Drive - Issues ?
Am mightily, mightily tempted to pick up an ssd. While 120gbs are within the realm of affordability, i was thinking if i could skimp and get by on a 60gb one instead, i don't have an awful lot of programs that are absolute must haves, but i do have a fair number of games. Should i just grab a 60gb (vertex, probably) or just go all out and get a 120gb?

2.5 Pata Laptop Drive To Portable Drive
I have two 40gb 2. 5" laptop drives, 1 from a dell(fujitsu) and 1 from a hp(hitachi) and i want to use them as additional portable storage since each ones respective laptops are now just doorstops. So, being i wanted to make them portable, i bought a usb case to use, ultra ult31738 to be exact, and no matter what i do, neither one of these hard drives will run when used in this case. They both spin when just connected via usb to usb, and spin even faster when connected via usb to usb along with the additional usb to power in connector that comes with the kit. The only way i have been able to get these drives to load in windows is by way of an adapter card attached to my 3. 5" usb enclosure. Any ideas as to why this is occurring, or how i might make the drives work in the case i bought for them?

Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 60 60gb Hdd Problem
I have a problem with one of my two hard disk drives. My first hdd is ibm 20gb and it's not causing any problem at all. My second one is maxtor diamondmax plus 60 60gb hdd and it's problematic. Here's the problem with the 60gb hdd: the label on the hdd says the cylinder is 16383 and the heads is 63, but my bios detects it as cylinder 29437 and sectors 255. The label also says master/single:on - but slave:off. Note that i put the maxtor hdd as primary slave. Sometimes, not always but occasionally, the hdd led lights up and does very strange noise after several seconds, then either it locks up or continues. If it continues, usually it happens again within several seconds (30 to 90 seconds). It it locks up, either one of these two happens:
1) blue screen of death, saying some junk and saying "beginning dump of physical memory. " Then it takes forever to do, that eventually will reset the computer. After the computer resets, the bios could not detect the maxtor hdd, but it detects the ibm one just fine. I had to power off the computer, and power it back on for the bios to be able to detect the maxtor hdd. 2) windows complains about some device (ie: the maxtor hdd) was unplugged unsafely, and shortly after, an error window pops up saying that some unknown error has occured and windows is shutting down in 60 seconds. After it shuts down, again the bios could not detect the maxtor hdd (see #1). I have gone to maxtor website and downloaded/installed their utility program called maxblast3 or something. They say it breaks the 30gb barrier of older bios. The utility program formats the hdd too. I did that 2 days ago, but it happened again today. I assume that program did not fix this problem.
