Use Laptop Hard Drives In Raid 5 Array For Whs System Drive

One thing i don't like about whs is the lack of failure protection for the system drive. If the system drive dies the whs is toast. I have an adaptec 3805 hardware raid card ( 8 x internal sas/sata ), and am considering putting the os on a raid 5 array. Doesn't need to be be particularly big in capacity, but small in physical volume occupied by the drives and low power consumption. To this end i am considering a super-micro 8 2. 5inch drives into 2 5. 25inch bay module, and a set of seagate 7200. 3 laptop hard-drives, probably 4 500gb in a raid 5. The 7200 drives don't use much more power than the 5400 drives. I checked the data sheets. Data is currently on 3. 5inch seagate drives

How crazy is the idea of using laptop hard-drives ( 7200rpm or otherwise ) in a raid array?

The raid array would be transparent to whs as it would be done in hardware.

6 Drives For A Raid Array

I have been out of the hd loop lately, doing a new server for work, and yes sas is out of the question due to cost, i was able to get a nice raid card, arc-1680ix-16. So with that i need some good sata drives to go with it in the 500g or larger range. For now i have 6 segate 500g es2 drives that will be temporarily used, but will go to another older server once i move things over, so i need some replacement drives. I know wd has "raid" edition drives and such, and i have heard here and there of certain drives wont play nice in raid and so on, so i want to get some recommendations from people who have used 6 or more drives in raid 50, 60 or 10 and had no issues.

2tb Drives For A Raid Array

I'm running a 5 x 750 gb array of seagates right now on a dell perc 5i, but am running out of space. I told myself that i would upgrade when 2 tb drives really started dropping in price, and at the $140 level that we're seeing with holiday sales i'm ready to bite. However, it seems that people are complaining about each kind of drive out there. Wd - problems with raid

Seagate - questions coming from the 1. 5 tb series and potentially problems with raid
Hitachi - deathstar (i owned two of those, wow, what a pain), but i wouldn't hold that against the company now

So what is actually the safest bet? 5900 vs. 7200 rpm doesn't matter to me because i only need to be able to max out gb ethernet; in fact, the 5900 rpm drives running cooler would be a good thing. Many people seem to complain about a brand because of reputation, so if i could get opinions from actual owners that would be preferable. Actually, i suppose the real reason i am making this thread is to weed out opinions from what people are actually seeing.

Whs - Moving System Drive Files To Storage Drives

Here's my problem. Whs started filling up my system drive's storage before i could stick another storage drive in it. As a result, whs keeps filling the system drive while leaving the new storage drive [relatively] untouched. From what i've observed previously, whs fills up one hard drive before moving on to another. Now i just want to have whs "move" whatever files it's got on the system drive to the new drive, but the remove option in the console for the system drive is greyed out. Ideas and solutions?

Changing Whs System Drive

I built a whs system last week and i put the system drive on an old 200gb hdd that i had laying around, and i have a 1tb drive in there for storage. I want to replace the old drive and put in a new 1. 5tb drive as the system drive and a storage drive. I would prefer not to have to reinstall whs if possible. Any suggestions?

Whs System Drive Failed

The main/system drive in my whs died with the rest of the hardware. My ups was faulting an overload, i would suspect the power supply failed(?). The setup had 2x500gb drives (system+2nd drive) and a newly added 1tb drive(in the server for about 3 months), a total of about 1. 2tb worth of data between the 3 drives, all seagate barracuda drives. The system drive is completely fubared, it will not allow any system connected to the drive to post nor will it return any error codes. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for the following questions:

1) where do i start to recover the remaining data on the other 2 drives? How much data can i expect to recover? Folder duplication was only added to the family photo's (+/-50gb). 2) what would be a suitable replacement for the system drive in a whs environment? Western digital caviar green? Green, large capacity & slow or power hungry, smaller capacity & fast?

Proper Way Of Replacing Whs System Drive

My main drive with whs started to make a clicking sound last week for about an hour and has since stopped. I quickly purchased an exact match for the drive and have it in my hands. What would be the best way to copy the whs install and data to that new drive? Cloning it?

Ordering another drive, taking that one out of the pool and then reinstalling whs on the new drive. I only have 500gb left on the server so i would have to purchase another drive to have enough space to put the data on a new drive have a new systme drive.

System Drive For Whs - Largest Disk

Does anyone follow the rule of having your system disk the largest disk installed on the server? So even if you could install the os on a 150gb drive, it is still recommended to install it on a 500-1tb drive because it will be partitioned and the d: drive will be used for backups? If so, what type of backups will the d: drive use? I'm looking to install whs on an old 150gb raptor drive. Tell me why this is a bad idea.

Adding Scsi Drives To Existing Raid 5 System

I'm fairly new to the world of scsi. We currently have a server with 4 scsi drives in it setup in raid 5. My boss wants to add two 300 gb scsi drives to the system, but does not need them to be part of the raid array. Is this possible? I have never deal with scsi before and i do not want to screw this up. If it makes any difference, this is for a dell poweredge 2600 server.

Guide: Successfully Clone And Upgrade A Whs System Drive

First off i want to give all the credit to ymboc over at mediasmartserver.net. He is the brains behind this and many other features that have been unlocked for whs. http://www.Mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?F=3&t=6826

For some reason or another people have been led to believe that you cannot rebuild your whs after cloning the system drive due to the "tombstones" that point the fs to your files across your various drives across the storage pool. Definition below is slightly dated, but it gets the point across of what tombstones are for. Tombstone – when a file is copied to the server it will land into the data partition on your primary drive, and over time it will be moved out to make space for new files. After being moved out a special pointer ("tombstone") is created in the data partition, pointing to the actual file in the storage pool. As you probably already know data does not go to the primary drive and then get moved. Since pp1, it goes to its final destination initially. Either way this tombstone file is created and is what allows de to work like it does. I have tested this myself 3 times and it has worked everytime. I performed it once in a vmware whs with pp2, and hyper-v whs pp3, and on my production whs with pp3. Although i have had great luck using this process, i am not making any guarantee to your success and am not responsible for damage you may cause to your whs. Now with that out of the way, heres the part you came to read. Background:

Whs uses unique diskid numbers found in the partition table of each disk to help identify them. The whs storage manager stores these diskids and other important information about its disks, folders and volumes in the windows registry. When using disk imaging software to migrate an operating system from one disk to another disk, these diskid numbers are typically not cloned during the disk imaging operation. When the destination disk is of a different size (typically larger) the volume geometry and as a result the volume identifier will also change. A newly imaged whs system disk with mismatched diskid number, volume geometry and/or volume identifiers will still boot normally but the server will not be able perform its functions. The whs console will exhibit a number of critical health warnings the most easily identifiable of which is the "backup service is not running" warning. For whs to function properly, the diskids, volume geometry and volume identifiers saved in the registry must match that of the newly imaged system disk. These instructions show how to obtain and clone the diskid when performing an imaging operation as well as update the windows registry with the system disk's description, new volume geometry and volume identifiers. Tools needed:

1) a 'workstation' running vista sp1 or newer os. 2) disk imaging software
3) destination disk (the disk you're upgrading to)
4) appropriate hardware/cables/etc to connect harddrive(s) to your workstation. (I recommend usb or esata connection for simplicity). 5) either:
. A) second set of hardware/cables/etc to connect a second hard drive to this system
Or
. B) enough free hard drive space to fit the entire contents of your whs system disk

Delayed Write Errors On Server 2003 Raid 5ee Array

One of our file servers consists of 10 hard drives on a raid 5ee array. Recently, we began getting delayed write errors:

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file xxx. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. "

I've talked to adaptec and sent them diagnostic information from the raid card and they said the card is in perfect working order, and the hard drives appear to be as well. I hooked the server up to a different port on the switch, used a different cable, and switched to the 2nd nic on it as well. I'm still getting these errors, and we've lost several documents. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I'm almost at the point where i want to just format the entire thing and start over.

Slow Hard Drives, Raid 0

I have 2 wd800jd (or soemthing like that) and one's an se and one's not, but there's no difference except for the fact that one's older, but they're still the same thing and later they renamed the drive. So why is my raid 0 slower than a standard 5, 400rpm hard drive? Is it the model thing, because this is unbelievable. Startups are like a normal computer (but mine's high-end, it should be faster) and i've recreated the raid array 3 times so far, but it's always slow in sisoftware sandra. It's really annoying.

Transferring Os Onto New Hard Drives Then Raid

I bought two caviar 640gb and i intend to use them in raid0 for my vista 64. This would be transferring out my old wd3200aaks and setting it aside. Can someone please instruct me the first steps i would need to do this. Logically, i assume i need to clone the old drive onto one of the new ones. Then i should setup up raid. If someone can direct me the proper tools to do so, that'll be most helpful. Also, i'm curious about short stroking since someone people brought it up in larger storage media. My plan if all goes well is 2x640gb os raid0 plus 1x1tb archive which hasn't arrived yet.

Combining Two Hard Drives Into One Raid

Kinda experienced with computers in most ways (built the machine i'm currently using, 8 gb ram, qx9650, water-cooled gts 8800 vid). Now for my server i've got an old dell xps gen 4 computer running windows server 2008. It has an ssd drive to boot off of and a media volume to hold my movies. The movies get streamed to my 73" hdtv using a spiffy dvico media player over my network. The problem is i filled my 1 tb with movies so i bought a 2 tb. I saw an option to mount the volume inside another volume so i did that. However it just created a folder inside my 1 tb instead of giving me what i thought would be a 3 tb combined set up. Clearly i oversimplified this. Is the answer raid? I don't know much about it and i don't have a raid card or anything. I just want to either a) combine both volumes to reflect a single 3 tb partition or b) get the dvico to read from two separate drives, which i don't think it supports. At least at once, anyway. Any help?

Sata Hard Drives For Raid On A Perc 6/i

I've been working on a server build for awhile and decided that the poweredge t610 that i've configured on dell's site should fit the bill, and then some. I'll be loading windows 2003 standard onto it. I have some questions and would appreciate any input. Please see the attached image for details of this build. The server will be used primarily as a file server. My questions mainly involve hard drives. 1. I was thinking i'd just make a simple mirror for the system drive out of the two sata drives included in the attached build. Should i use the onboard raid for this, or should i use two ports on the perc. 2. I'd like to create a 1tb (or larger) raid 5 or 6 array using the perc to serve network folders. What sata drives should i purchase for this purpose?

3. I'd like to have a nightly backup to one of eight 500gb sata drives that i already own. 7 are maxtor quickview 500 (model: 3h500f0) and 1 (warranty replacement for a dead maxtor) is a seagate barracuda es (p/n: 9bl146-303). Can the nightly backup go onto one of these and can it be hot swappable? Would i need to use a port on the perc or could it be onboard? Do i need to buy special "drawer" attachments for each of these drives so they can slide in and out easily?

Whs Unnecessary Hard Drive Activity

So my nas has been running fine for a while then all of a sudden, in the past few months, things just went downhill. For example, when an hd movie (located on the nas) is played on any comp on the lan (gigabit lan), it'll play fine for a while, then during it, it would stutter to the point of not-watchable. Why? Because one or two hdds would have maxed activity. While its doing this 'thing', whatever it is (since nothing should be happening, no backup is running, no duplication is happening, just the movie streaming which that nowhere near maxes out the hdds bandwidth) i cant watch movies, i cant access the shares, i cant remote desktop, i cant run the whs connection utility, nothing. If i have a remote desktop session open and this happens, i can see the one or two hdds maxing out (i'm not sure if the movie is located on them or not but my guess is yes). Anyone have this issue? Anyone know what it could be? I have 14tb capacity with 9tb used along with drive balancer used a few times so right now, each drive has the same %. Anyone have any ideas?

Computer Wont Detect Hard Drives When Raid Enabled

I've gotten them to work before in raid, recently i formatted my drives and i had set the bios to 'defaults'. Well, the drives are formatted. I can go to bios and my hds appear, i go to enable raid and save the settings only to return to bios and see they're gone. And when i hit f10 to go into the raid setup, it shows both of them but they are in red highlight. Ive been messing around in the settings see if i turned anything on last time but have had no luck. 1 X 300gb 10k Drive Or 1tb (raid 0 - 2 X 500gb) Drives?

I'm about to purchase a new gaming rig and am debating between a 300gb 10k drive or go with a 1tb raid 0 (2 x 500gb) setup? I'm currently using a raid 0 configuration, but wasn't sure how well a 300gb 10k drive performs for gaming. If i go with the 300gb drive, i'm going to use my current two 640gb as storage. Do I Need Raid Enabled Drives For Software / Firmware Raid ?

First off, i am completely aware of the fact that you need a re drive with tler enabled for correct hardware raid. My question though is tler needed for software (windows and linux) or firmware (onboard or fakeraid) raid setups? Will these implementations drop a hdd if it spends too much time correcting a read/write error?

In a single drive scenario, the drive will attempt to read/write the same sector for up to 60 seconds and then remap it if possible. In a hardware raid scenario, the controller will tell the failed drive to remap to a new sector with data from a good redundant drive (raid 0 not apply here). My second question is if indeed you do need a tler enabled drive because the controller will drop the hdd, then what will handle read/write errors? Will these software/firmware raid controllers do the same error recovery?

If there is no error recovery, it would seem that software/firmware raid are just bad news. This is esp true for firmware raid which would seem to have all the downsides of the other controller types and none of the benefits. Third question deals with ssds. Are there only certain ones qualified for raid and 24x7 usage? I have not seen a distinction like i have with hdds. Also, are these going to work properly in a raid 5, as the controller will want to try and fix any errors like they are hdds, yet the ssds have very good internal error correction.
