Hard Drive Access Slow, Not Due To Drive, But Files
Ok, this is a bizzare problem i have never seen, but there is a certain folder on my old machine's old 80gb western digital 8mb cache ide hdd, that when you go to open the folder the window will stop responding and it takes over a full minute to come back, but still it doesn't open. Then when you try again it will open just fine. I thought that perhaps if i copied all the files over to the new machine's 400gb sata drive (the sata is the primary and the ide is slave in this machine), that the issue would be resolved, but now it acts exactly the same way when you try to open that folder off of the sata drive.

Files At The End Of A Hard Drive
Are there any docs, articles, or threads/posts regarding file performance at the end of a hard drive (edge of the platters)? Is faster access at the edge of the platters or the center? I read at the edge but i'm not sure why. I am thinking the center would rotate data under the heads fastest, but that's why i wanted the article to read up.

Dump Usb Files To Hard Drive Automatically
I was wondering if there was a way to automatically dump the contents of a usb drive to a hard drive once it's plugged in. I do a lot of work on my usb drive and it would make my life a lot easier if there was a way that i could have the contents dumped to the hard drive automatically without any interaction.

Recover Files From A Hard Drive On A Corrupted Windows Xp
I'm trying to recover files from a hard drive with a corrupted version of xp home. It says windows did not shut down properly last time and gives me the 3 safe mode options, last config that worked, and start normally. If i go to safe mode, immediate blue screen and error code. If i go to last config that worked it shows the windows icon, then the time bar freezes and goes to blue screen. I need to recover important document files for my friends father asap, so i was looking into hard drive enclosures, but am fairly unsure if it will work the way i am planning. Would the enclosure be a way to pull the files off the drive? I don't mind wiping it and re-installing windows, but i need these files.

View Protected Files & Folders On Another Hard Drive
How do i bypass protected files and folders while connected to a second hard drive? I recently purchased a usb device that lets me look at files on another hard drive. I can find the files and folders, but they are protected from when the hard drive was in the other pc, which fried a couple months ago. I can look at files on the desktop section, but then i go into the my documents part of the hard drive, they're all protected. I tried right clicking the files and picked "share this folder on the network" and un-checked "read only, " and i still can't view the files. I have also slaved the hard drive on a different pc, and it fails to boot up windows and i get a blue screen of death.

Copying Files From Internal Hard Drive To External Usb 2.0
About to start new build. Since present eide hd will not be available for transferring files to new eide hd, i'm thinking about copying files to external usb2. 0 hard drive, and then copying them to new eide hard drive when new build is up and running. The external usb drive will be used in the new build. I need to know if this is feasible and, if so, how do i do it? Do i just copy a file at a time?
Or do i need to establish folder for groups of files? The files are a mix of photos, music, and doc files. I do not want to foul this up and lose everything i have in the process. I tried this once before when i had to reinstall xp home and found subsequently that i could not access the files i had sent to floppies.

Transfer Files From Virus Infected Pc To External Hard Drive
I have a trojan virus on my computer. I cannot (given my limited knowledge) remove it. I want to transfer music files from the infected computer to an external hard drive. The anti-virus program that detected the virus on my computer 'tells me' that these files are not infected. My question: what are the risks of transferring these music files to my external hard drive? I am concerned about the risk to the external hard drive itself and also to any computer that i might later transfer these files to. Wow, i hope i asked this question intelligently! Too long? More concise? More info? (I'm interested in the best way to phrase a question as i believe that being a good computer scientist is largely about recognizing a problem intelligently)

Recover Files From Laptop Hard Drive With Windows 2000
Boss at work has managed to crash his laptop and of course has not done a backup in 3 years, now he wants me to try and recover some of his files. This is a windows 2000 system and what it is doing is coming up with the following message on boot up. A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart
Now i thought maybe the system files where corrupted, we got one of these fix your disk programs and tried running it, it says that both the partition table and boot sector are ok so no joy there, had a look on this forum and found a thread with link to ntfs4dos and ran that, it says the nt ntfs partition is not initialized. Finally tried coping on the system files again using the windows 2000 repair option still no joy. Does anyone have any other ideas i can try, can i some how link the hard drive via a converter cable to my desk top (maybe a stupid question, but hay i'm clutching at straws), or do i just send it back and tell him that it will cost £350 to get the files and here is an essay on the virtues of keeping backups. (Probably won't do last bit as end up getting fired).

Hard Drive Partition Corrupted - Files Replaced And Shows Symbols
I have a pika external hard drive with 3 separate partitions. One of these recently became corrupt but the others are working fine. On the corrupt partition all the files have been replaced by unknown file types with names like ) and ). My computer still shows that the partition has 2. 87gb free (the same as before the crash) but the unknown files are only a few mb each. The partition holds 50gb and had a lot of music and videos on there. What could have caused this crash and what is the problem with the partition. Is it recoverable. If so can anyone recommend any good software to do it? I'm thinking that the unknown files replaced the folders that were previously on there and hope the data is recoverable.

Managing Programs And Files On 2 Hard Drives
I've just installed a 2nd hard drive (original 20gb, new one 80gb). What is the best way to manage the files on them. Do i put programs on one and ordinary files on the other? Do i split programs between system and leisure? Does it really matter?

If i'm on windows (windows 7) what's the best way to copy all the files of one drive to a folder on another drive, besides using the windows copy that will most likely complain about something. Thumb Drive Files Are Invisible
All of a sudden, my kingston 16gb data traveler i is giving me problems. I can't see any files or folders, but the properties shows 10gb used, which is accurate. I copied a file this morning via right-click > send to, and when i got to my office, that was all i could see, and the same with when i got home. I don't want to write any more to it, just in case i might overwrite some existing files, but i don't think that would be the case. By the way, files and folders are not "hidden", from a windows file system settings perspective. Any suggestions?

Backing Up Files To An External Drive
I was just wondering what most people do? This is mainly going to be important docs and pictures. Should i use zip archives? Just use regular folders and add as needed? I have acronis true image home 2009 so i could set that up for my pictures library, however, i will probably keep the external in a fire box when not in use. I'm just starting to realize i have too many pictures(family, baby, first home, etc. ) That are located on a single drive, kinda scary.

Recovering Two 250 Gb Files From Crashed Drive
I have a crappy external my book pro 500gb, that i have now extracted out of the case, after it crashing (see threads below). There are two 250gb encrypted truecrypt files on the drive, nothing else. I need these files recovered, i mean really need to. All my photos from the last two years are on there, and no backup (im an idiot, i know). How would be the best way to get these two files back? I have a new 500gb drive to place them onto. Make an image of the old drive? Try to recover the files directly? Any good (low level?) Programs?
I also have the problem that the crashed drive freezes any operating system trying to boot up with it in. Tips, ideas?
File system is ntfs. (Check out all the other problems i had with this disk here: one, two, three)
Very grateful for any answers!

How To Tell What Files Were Lost In Failed Whs Drive ?
So my hitachi 1tb drive just died apparently (status missing, blah blah blah) and was wondering if there's a way to tell what i lost. Everything still seems to be accessible and the total storage size is the same (~7tb used). Add:
In the share folders tab i'm seeing a bunch of folders "failing: check health" but from randomly clicking through files everything is playing for now.could the drive just be in the middle of failing instead of dead in the grave? I've got enough free space to take over the 931gb of data, should i go ahead and "remove" the drive or would it be better to pull the drive and try to access the files through a dock?

Free Software To Copy All Files From Drive
My 1. 5tb drive is making clicking noises and is really really slow to work with. I bought a new 500gb drive, is there any free software that will allow me to copy all the files off the 1. 5tb drive (actual data on this drive is less than 200gbs) onto the 500gb drive so i can then boot off the 500gb drive?
Is that even possible?

Files Get Damaged When Writing To Usb Drive ( Mybook Pro )
Im having a problem with my mybook (pro edition). When i copy/download files to it, some of them become corrupted. Like if i download 80 files (using bittorrent) to it, and then do a checksum redundancy check, 6 or more files are damaged! I also get the problem when copying files from any other drive to the mybook, so its not just when using bittorrent. Info: 500gb western digital mybook pro edition. One 500gb ntfs partition. I use usb 2. 0. Havent got firewire on my system. Running xp pro, sp2. Acer 5024wlmi laptop.

Whs - Moving System Drive Files To Storage Drives
Here's my problem. Whs started filling up my system drive's storage before i could stick another storage drive in it. As a result, whs keeps filling the system drive while leaving the new storage drive [relatively] untouched. From what i've observed previously, whs fills up one hard drive before moving on to another. Now i just want to have whs "move" whatever files it's got on the system drive to the new drive, but the remove option in the console for the system drive is greyed out. Ideas and solutions?

Ide Drive Through Usb - Vista Won't Open Files
So i have a hard drive out of an old laptop that crapped out. When plugged in, it powers up fine, the disk is spinning and my computer will see that the drive is there. Pop up says device is working properly, and allows me to "safely remove" it. Device manager shows it is there, giving the proper model name and such. All of this, but my computer won't let me open the drive to get the files. It doesn't show up in the my computer window. I have tried a couple of different external plug in setups, and they all do the same thing, even the ones with a dedicated power cord and two usb plugs to give the device more power.

Is Usb Hard Drive Safer Than Normal Hard Drive ?
At the moment i have about 2t of data over 5hard drives, most of then films i have converted to avi from home as i live in uni halls the rooms are small, i am worried that leaving my pc on all the time will lower the life of my hard drives with data on, do you think it would be a good choice to put them into a usb drive and that way i only use them when i need? Is usb hard drive safer than normal hard drive ? Or am i just being silly?
