Computer Shutdown

I have a intel 850gb mobo and i formatted my hdd 2x thinking it was a bad install. When i hit start, shudown, not restart the computer goes thru the powering down phrase i hear the familiar click of the hdd whichs turns it off and bam, the hdd is off but the mobo and fans including cpu are still on. I replaced the power supply to no avail. I have to hit the reset button then the power button to quickly too turn off computer. Strange, im thinking the mobo is not sending the signal to the power supply commanding it to turn off. My hdd is new and was working finr, i like to reformat my hdd 2x a year to clean off the mess.

Computer Shutdown Randomly

I built my computer a few years ago and have had no problems (p4). Today it decided to shutdown randomly. I tried rebooting but it would turn on like it was going to start but bios would not post and it would shut down after about 5 seconds. My first inclination was that it was a failing power supply. Replaced that without any luck. The odd thing is that when i plug in both power components from the ps to the mobo it turns on and after five seconds turns off;

Yet, when i do not have the 12v 4pin plugged in, the computer stays running, although it does not load windows. I checked the ram, light on mobo is on, nothing smells fried, i'm hoping it is not the mobo.

Computer Does Not Turn Off After Shutdown ?

I have an old opteron desktop that i will be using as a home server. The issue i've been having for the past few months is that it will not physically turn off after the os finishes shutting down. It used to, when i was using it as my main desktop, so i have no idea what has changed. What i have tried:

Windows 7 professional x64
Windows server 2008 r2 x64
Windows xp professional sp2
Reset bios
Install nvidia chipset drivers from manufacturer cd
Windows xp sp3
Ubuntu 7. 10
Flash bios to 4/06/2006 from 3/29/2006

Things i have tried since posting:

Unplug hard drives, boot ubuntu livecd, halt

In all of the operating systems i have tried, none can successfully turn off the computer. The only indication that the computer is supposed to have shut off is that i hear something turn off (hard drive maybe), and then all power would normally be cut, but now that sound doesn't happen in xp after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried disabling usb power suspend in server 2008, with no effect. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Edit: the os's shutdown screen remains on the display after it "shuts down". Specs:

Amd opteron 144 1. 8ghz
Dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d (modded to sli-d)
3gb ddr-400
Two geforce 7600 gt (one is out of the machine right now)
Single 160gb ide hard drive
Single 320gb sata2 hard drive

Windows Has Been Shutdown To Prevent Damage To Your Computer

When i'm installing from my windows xp disk the initial blue screen comes up saying it's loading all the stuff from the cd basically and then i get the error message as follows:-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer, press f8 and select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information:

*** Stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08)

*** Pci.sys - address f748e0bf base at f7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c

I have no idea what would cause this. I'm over-clocking my cpu some some bios settings are changed, could setting them back to defaults solve this issue? It doesn't really make sense to me. Please, i'd be grateful for any advice.

Pc Shutdown - Buzzing Noises

Recently my computer has been randomly shutting itself down. Immidiatly after the shutdown a loud buzzing/beeping noise occurs from the front of the pc. My computer is custom made from the internet, and so i dont know who to contact. The part making the noise is a small black circular object, about the size of a 10c piece. Its connected to my motherboard by a black/red wire. I believe the wire goes next to the wires for my on/off, reset, and on & working lights. I replaced my hard drive as my university technician told me my hd was seizing, however that isnt the problem. Any ideas suggestions to my problem? Or could someone tell me what this noisey black thing is! And how can i fix it!

I have a hp dc5700 and i just installed a nvidia 8400 pci. When i shutdown the pc it restarts. I tested without the card and the on board video works fine and the computer shuts down properly. Tried reinstalling the drivers and un-checking automatic reboot to see if it was blue screening, but nothing. There are no errors in the log and the pc works fine. I am leaning toward hardware (either the motherboard or video card). Any suggestions?

Can A Hardware Button Utilize The Software Shutdown In Windows?

Can you wire a button into a computer (through serial, mobo jumpers, whatever) with a suitable utility so that the button doesn't do a hard powerdown (atx style) but instead uses the windows shutdown?

What would be even more convinient is if the same button could be used for power on / shutdown, but i'm not sure if that is possible. I guess the easiest solution is if there is a utility that lets the atx power on/off button access the windows shutdown sequence. Is there?

Does anyone understand what i'm asking, and does anyone have any suggestions?

Power Issue On Shutdown, Fans Do Not Stop, Led Flicker

Just put together a new machine, but using an old antec case and 350w psu (antec sl350s) and some other old hardware. First i started just plugging in the mobo with ram and heatsink (so, no peripherals connected, not even hd or the video card) and i notice that when i power down by holding down the front power button, the cpu fan stops, but the case and psu fans keep going! I have to switch off using the psu switch to shut everything down. Well, that's weird, but i still move on. However, with all the new hardware plugged in, the problem gets worse. Now when i switch off using the front power button:the case and psu fan are still onthe power led is off, but the hd led starts flickering very rapidlythe floppy drive starts grinding loudly and angrily; leave the system in this state, and the grinding dies down (but never goes away), then comes back after a few minutes, although i haven't done anything (the box is just sitting there)

The real problem is, the system does not boot after that! If i turn off the psu switch, then turn it back on, the clicking/flickering comes back. Pushing the front power button makes the cpu fan jerk, but it does not start on and the system does not start booting. But if i wait a few minutes with the psu switched off, i can boot up after that. This need to wait for a while is bothering me. What could be going wrong? Are these symptoms of a faulty power supply? How should i proceed diagnosing this?

So to conclude, my system goes into this weird twisted state where hd led flickers and floppy clicks at about the same rate and the power/reset button do nothing. The state is reachable if i power down using the front power button, or if i flip the psu switch off and back on after that (but if i wait for a few minutes before switching it back on, then fans do not come back on and i can boot just fine). My system (items marked "new" are the stuff i just bought, the rest is components that have been working for at least a few months):

Cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2. 60ghz dual-core (new)
Cpu heatsink/fan: noctua nh-c12p cpu cooler (new)
Motherboard: asus m2n-sli (new)
Ram: 2 x 1024mb ocz platinum revision-2 pc6400 ddr2 800mhz dual channel (new)
Video card: evga geforce 6200 256mb ddr2 pci video card (only bought it because mobo doesn't have on-board video, dang) (new)
Psu: 350w antec sl350s
Hard drive: 160gb sata 3. 0gb/s samsung spinpoint
Other peripherals: promise 2-port sata 3. 0gb/s raid controller card
Case: antec slk3700-bqe
Case fan: some 120mm antec fan that came with the case

Computer Qualification To Open Up Computer Shop

I plan to open up my own computer shop when i leave school (this is my final year. ), And of course, after i get a job in town, to save some money. I would be the "normal" pc shop owner, fix computer hardware/software problems, install hardware, format hard drives, and of course sell computers, computer hardware, and computer software. I am wondering what sort of qualifications i need. I am from new zealand, so i probably won't be aware of certain degrees. I already have qualifications in small business and retail, through a polytechnic, so i am just after what computer qualification would be best. Do you suggest a bachelor degree such as a bachelor of computer engineering, bachelor of information technology, or maybe just a certificate in computer engineering, or something else?!

Connecting Computer To Another Computer To Share Internet

How can i connect my computer to other computer to share internet? Well here is the problem, computer 1 has internet which is a wireless internet that is used by a wireless usb adapter which connects to one of my networks. But computer 2 had a virus so i restored it and now it only has "local connections" and not "wireless connections" in control panel under "network connections" and so computer 2 has no internet on it because i can't connect to anything without having "wireless connections" there. So what i was thinking is using a ethernet cable to connect computer 1 to computer 2 and they can share the internet and they both can have it. So i connected the ethernet cable to both computers and now what do i do? Under local connections on computer 2 it says "unplugged" and i'm confused! How can i make it so both computers have internet and none of them connects to a router through wires? I know there is a way, computer one has fully working internet because it has "wireless connections" in "network connections". All i have to do is plug in my adapter and then connect to my network. If it helps to know, the computers are both windows xp. Are you suppose to configure something now that the cord has them both connected to each other? How do i make it so the internet from computer 1 which is wireless internet, connect to computer 2 using a ethernet cable, make both have internet by sharing computer 1 internet! Idk if u guys get it? Like computer 1 is connected to computer 2 through a ethernet cable, i want computer 2 to have internet aswell, is there a way that the internet can be shared like that from computer 1? Please help me and with good instructions! This is my very first time doing this, and i need internet on my other computer, this is my only chance left!

How To Hack Someones Computer From Your Computer ?

Now i know this is usually against forum rules, but the reason i'm asking this is to test and see if my firewall's working. I don't think that would be against forum rules, would it? Basically i want to know if there's anyone on here that i know fairly well who knows how to do it, that i can pm my ip addy to, and then they can try to hack into my computer, and if they succeed they'll just leave a folder on my desktop that has a textfile that says "you've been hacked" or something along those lines, then advise me on the forum on how to improve my security.

What Do You Do With An Old Computer ?

So what do guys do with your old computers? I used to go and give them to members of my family, but now everyone's got one. Parts i've kept in a box, but i'm not sure what to do with a working system. Junk, scrap, or throw in the garage? Or do guys go for a mad mod project?

Right now it just sits in a corner, waiting to be scrapped for parts, but i'd like to put it to good use if i could. The culprit in question is a 466 celeron with a 6 and 2 gig hd and 64 megs of ram.

Using Your Computer As A Tv

The next comp i'm gonna build is for my boys' room. I want to be able to use it as their tv as well to save space. We have cable, and therefore have a cable box. If i install a tv tuner card in my computer, do i just run the cable from the box to the card as i would to the old tv? Do i still change the channel through the box? Does the card just basically route the signal to the monitor?

Fly In The Computer

I heard some weird buzzing noise and then i saw the little fly ontop of my video card. How he managed to brave the gauntlet of cables, packplates and fans is a mystery to me but he's definately not leaving anytime soon. I could try to blast him into my cooler with a jet of compressed air but the sucker is fast. Would there be any harm if a dead fly lands on the mobo or something?

Car Computer

I'm in the process of transforming my 2007 pontiac g5 into a fully functional carputer. What i want it to do is: play music original car head unit (will be done through auxilary), play movies, be a fully functional computer, touchscreen, gps, look cool. How i want it done, mount a touchscreen above the head unit in the car, approximately 6-7 inch screen, which will support all the needed functionality. Have the computer be discrete in the car (possibly under a seat) while still working off the car battery. Fast boot up would be nice, but its not a thing that i'm deeply concerned about. Probably run on windows xp (unless there are other suggestion). I would like it to be so when i open up the glove compartment, the dvd drive is mounted inside so i can put dvds/cds ect in it. The music will be played through the cars speakers by taping into the auxiliary jack from inside the dash. I want to do all this (minus the touchscreen) for about 100 dollars. I know that sounds cheap but i am broke and have no job. If you can help me out and find me the things needed (minus a touchscreen, i can do that on my own) that would be great. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Computer Just Shuts Off

A couple hours ago, i tap the front of the case with my foot, and everything just shuts off. I tried turning it back on and nothing happened. So i turned the power supply off and back on and tried again. This time, it tried to start and then immediately shutoff again. The power supply has a blue light in it and that goes out immediately as well. I can see 2 yellow lights on the motherboard are lit when the power supply is turned on. Do you think my power supply blew or is it something else? Any way i can test?
