Boots And Freezes Or Does Not Boot At All
Replies: 4 | Post Date: October 13th, 2004, 12:18 PM | User: Rosaaeterna | Forums: forums.devshed.comEven after reformatting, i occasionaly get blue screens regarding the cache when playing dvd's. Right now, the following is happening upon booting the system:
1) boots and runs
Or
2) boots and freezes @ the desktop
Or
3) checks cd rom, dvdrom, floppy and does not boot w/out any beeps. Or
4) 4 bios beeps while checking the cd rom, dvd rom, floppy drive. If it gets down to #3 or #4 it's pretty much stuck there for the next few hours (upon trying to reboot). But if i leave the sys alone and try to boot in a few hours, it is able to do #1 or #2. I'm thinking it's one or more of the following:
- Ram
- Motherboard
- Powersupply
- Cd or dvd drive ( which i doubt but egh )

Xp On Boot Up Goes To Post Screen And Then Freezes
Xp home will now not boot up. The first problem i noticed was a pop up that warned me that my hard drive was nearly full depite having 8gb free. I then got the message again the next day. I did a virus scan, restore, scandisk etc, all the usual things. It now wont boot beyond the post screen and just freezes. I tried another psu, changed the motherboard, checked the ram all to no avail. I tried the hd in another computer and it worked after several boots. I did a xp repair, and it worked on the other pc. When i put it back in mine it crashed again at the same point!

Pc Starts To Boot And Freezes Before Windows
I turned on the pc and the "intel desktop boards" screen appears. And that is it! Usually that would flash and the next screen would be detecting my ide card and recognizing the hard drives but it doesnt even get there. The screen that it is stuck on shows the processor speed, how much ram, and that the keyboard, mouse, and the usb legacy is enabled. The bottom says hit f2 to run set up and f12 if you want to boot from network. I can not get into the bios. The most i made it do was get it to say "entering setup" by hitting f2 as soon as the page came up. But it never goes anywhere after that. Frozen! Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I am not a computer wiz, just a long time tinkerer. I have built 2 or 3 in my lifetime and have just basic knowledge.

Pc Freezes Or Won't Boot
Well i've been on my laptop for about a month now because my pc won't work. I decided that since i have some free time finally, now is the time to troubleshoot and hopefully fix!
90% of the time it will boot into windows (xp pro) no problem. After about 30 seconds to a minute (it varies), it just completely freezes up. The computer stays on, but the screen just freezes. I've tried uninstalling the video card drivers and reinstalling some older whql ones. I've tried taking out 1 stick of ram at a time to see if it has something to do with the ram. Even booting into safe mode yields the same freezes. Sometimes, it won't boot at all. It just gives me one long beep, followed by 3 smaller ones. Any ideas?

Computer Freezes On Boot Up At Asus Splash Screen
My computer freezes sometimes on boot up (this happens very rarely, but is annoying when it does). When i turn it on, i see my initial asus splash screen and it just stays on this until i reset or reboot. It then boots up fine. Other than this, my computer runs flawlessly, it has never seriously crashed or frozen up when it's running. I noticed also some time after i bought/built the computer, the initial "beep" when the computer boots up disappeared. I don't know if this is related. Has anyone come across something like this? I'm thinking of actually selling off this computer as i am going to need a laptop, so i'd like to get this resolved.

Computer Boot Up Problem, After Power On It Stays 5 Seconds Then Freezes
Dell dimension 1100. O. S. Windows xp home edition. Problem:
When i power on the computer it stays for about 5 seconds, then there is a click and it freezes. Nothing shows on the screen – no logo etc.completely dead the green light on front of computer tower remains fixed on. I have tried following:
Disconnected memory card and reseated it, disconnected sound card and reseated (no more cards). Disconnected all cables to motherboard and devices and reseated them. Disconnect mouse, keyboard, monitor. But it never gets beyond the first five seconds of booting up. A few days before the problem came i saw the following warning message:
"Power surge on hub port. A usb device has exceeded power limits of its hub port". I have pursued this and downloaded a patch from dell to remedy this problem: but i cannot install the patch as i cannot get my computer going. Any ideas on how to solve this? Second could the problem be related to this ‘power surge on hub port’.

Computer Freezes On Boot - Long Time To Load Windows
I was having issues with a game of mine hard locking my pc. The only way to get out of it was to hold down the power button and force the pc to power down, then boot back up. Trying to trouble shoot the game, this happened several times. Then, it started freezing on the memory test. It's not really freezing, though - if i leave it sit for a very long time ( 5 to ten minutes ), it will eventually boot into windows. Any ideas?

Computer Boots, But No Video
I just built a p4 3. 2 socket 478 computer using a asus p4se motherboard and a pny 256 mb video card. Point being; i'm trying to get everything set up for the first time and ive come to a big brick wall. I boot and i don't get any visual, the monitor flashes a signal but then goes dead. I know the videocard works because i tried this with a non-functioning video card and there was no flash. So obviously at some point theres a signal disruption. I get no post beeps and similarly i know the ram i have is in good working order and i also have made an effort to put it back in to see if it worked. Its single channel ddr (one stick of 256, another 512) the hdd led blinks and it makes reading noises so i know that its trying to run, im sure its not a processor dilemma. I'm thinking theres a jumper missing on the motherboard perhaps?

Laptop Only Boots Occassionally
My four year old hp compaq nc6000 with windows xp (with latest updates) was running fine and then began not to boot after shutdown. However, if i take out the battery and leave it alone for a while, then plug in the external power and leave it for a few minutes, it will often boot. When it boots everything runs okay. On the occasions when it does boot, the numlock, capslock, scrolllock and power/standby light all blink green and i immediately hear the hard drive. When it does not boot these lights do not come on, i hear a click like the cd drive checking, hear the fan come on, and then see the yellow battery charging light, and then everything turns off. I have:
-Replaced the hard drive
-Checked the seating of the memory
-Run the hp diagnostics which showed no memory or hd problems
-Run memtest86+ for 10 hours which indicated no memory problems
-Run a thorough virus scan. Any thing else i should check before declaring it a motherboard problem and sending it off to be fixed.

Computer Boots For 5 Seconds, Then Shuts Down
The pc was auto shutting down for a week or so, it would bring up the standby, turn off, restart screen option then shut down. About a week later it completely shut down. You can't boot it anymore. It will act like it's booting up but then shut down after 5 seconds. No activity on the screen either. No option to goto bios. It just shuts down before it gets to the first screen. The next night i go there to change the power supply. I change it with another 250w that i have from home and still, no go. So i start thinking it could be a ram problem. Went get some chips from the car and changed them, still no go. I didn't think it would be hdd, fdd, cd/dvd problem but i unplugged them anyways and still. Boot for 5 seconds then shut down. Nothing connected but a stick of ram and the power supply.

Computer Just Reboots When Win Xp Boots In
When winxp boot's in and you have to choose what profile to login, computer just reboots with out letting you get a chance to make a choice! At first i thought it was an issue with the hard drive so i put it into another pc and did a system spyware and virus scan and there was nothing. I then pulled out everything and tried with different parts, still same issue!
Thought it was a powersupply issue so i went out and bought a new and bigger supply but still has not fixed the issue! After all this i have taken my baby back and i'm trying to find a way to get it back up and running! Any idea's?

Computer Boots Up For Three Seconds Before Shutting Off
So i put my pc together (minus the ram and v-card, in shipping) and i tried turning it on to test the fans. The computer boots up and runs for all of three seconds before shutting off. It then proceeds to continually power itself on and off. Is this a shortcircut, a cpu issue, or just the result of there being no ram and vcard? It's amazing how much 7 years of inactivity can do to your pc building ability. Edit: the problem appeared to be poorly applied thermal paste. After re-installing the hsf, it stays powered on with no beeps.

Windows 98 Only Boots In Safe Mode
Windows 98 only boots in safe mode. When try to boot in regular mode it just sits at the clouds and the bottom progress bar keeps scrolling forever. No changes were made in either hardware or software. Just one day it stopped booting. It's driving me pretty crazy.

System Only Boots When Reset Switch Is Pressed
I put together an am2 system with an abit kn9s motherboard, xion solaris case, and thermaltake 430w psu. When i cold boot the system with the power button, everything powers up (fans, case lights, dvd burner, card reader, etc. ), But the system doesn't actually boot. If i press the reset switch when the computer is in this state, it wakes up and starts booting. I've double-checked the wiring, and am at a loss.could this be a bios issue?

X1950 Pro Boots To Black Screen After Drivers Installed
I just bought a 1950 pro (agp) 256 mb to replace a dead x800 (agp). Total uninstall on the x800 drivers. The new card works ok (flickers during scroll/slow) until i install the drivers. After restart the windows xp screen starts and then it goes to black screen and i can hear the monitor lose signal (slight crackling noise). I have to do a safe boot and remove the drivers to get my display back. Went to the the ati website and finally found a problem description that matched mine. 4th page of the display tab. Last item. Told me to get all the latest chipset/bios/motherboard drivers. Visited the dell website and brought everything up to latest. No difference. Any ideas? I am a computer idiot so it is probably something stupid. On day 4 here and ready to tear it out and go try the comparable nvidea card.

Message: Reboot & Select Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media
I built my first computer about 2 weeks ago but have noticed a problem. When i turn the computer on it shows the motherboard screen and stays there for approx 15-20 seconds. Then it goes into a black screen stating that i need to "reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. "
I am a bit confused on what this means. If i restart the computer while it shows the message it starts up with no problems. What can i do to have this message no appear as i power on my computer? Also during the shift from one screen to another, the screen blinks in green and other colors. What can this be? Can it be that i have my lcd tv connected to my computer with a dvi to hdmi cable?Besides these issues, everything seems to run great, no overheating at all.

Windows Boot Error - Unmountable Boot Volume
I have had my new system up and running for about 5 weeks now with now problems. So today i was on my computer and all of a sudden it freezes. Nothing is responding so i just reset the power. Once i reset the power i get to the logon screen, i logon and then i get a blue screen saying windows has detected a problem and has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer the under it, it says, unmountable_boot_volume. So i thought my grphix card might have overheated so i try rebooting again about several times with no luck. I try booting with safe mode but still freezes. After about 2 hrs i come back and nothing has changed. Any 1 know any solutions?

Can't Boot With Cd Rom / Fix Boot.ini
I have a toshiba satelite laptop with windows xp on it. While copying files over the network onto it i got the blue screen with white letters. I had to do a "hard shut down" to turn it off. When i tried to turn it back on it would start to boot and as it begins to load i get the option to boot in normal or safe mode (both give the same result). After the windows xp logo shows i get another screen that says invalid boot.ini, i searched the error on google and i found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
Ok great! I have the cd i put it in the drive, but it won't boot on the cd, also i tried pressing f everything, delete, esc yadah to get into the bios to make sure its set to boot up on a cd before the hard drive. But nothing seems to work. Does anyone know something else i might be able to try to get the boot.ini reset / uncorrupt or get it to boot up by the cd?

Pc Freezes Or Shuts Down
The initial problem was that the computer freezes like it would when the cpu shuts down. I have had this problem for ages. However, it happens so rarely that it really didn't bother me. Nowadays the problem occurs extremely frequently. 20+ times a day. Another thing that started happening at the same time those freezes started getting more frequent, is the system shutting down whenever it wants. Rather violently. These two last problems happen anytime.could be while i let my computer idling or could be while im playing a game. Can even happen anytime during boot up, which is frustrating as sometimes i start my computer 5 times in a row before i can use it.
Windows only sees and uses a single cpu. Can't set processor affinity. And single thread programs use the whole cpu. I don't have that problem under linux. Strangely enough it seems its not hyper-threaded? I thought my cpu was. At first i blamed overheating. But the computer freezes with the cpu at about 50 degrees. Tried reseting the bios to factory default. It didn't help. (That just made windows complain). So now i'm thinking a hardware component might be dying. I'm thinking either the cpu or mother board. I'm rather unsure as to what to do next to try to find the source of this problem?
Computer specifications:
Cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 4400+
Mobo: msi k9n platinum
Ram: 2x 1024mb corsair
Gpu: nvidia geforce 8800 gts
Psu: assus 550w

Game Freezes
I had a virus and had to reinstall windows. Everything is wroking fine now except any 3d game i play. Sometimes i can join a game and play for 2 minutes or so, and others i can't even pick a team yet and the game freezes and makes the sound loop and my moniter status light goes from green to orange. I have windows updated, directx 9. 0c, and the latest ati graphic drivers. Is the card over heating? It doesn't feel hot and never has before. Is my offbrand cheap aspire x-alien generic psu crapping out on me? Should i try older versions of dx or gfx drivers?

Pc Freezes On Bootup
My friend's pc frooze a few days ago, and we can not get it to start. It stops at the part with the blue screen that says windows xp (no error message). I tried safe mode and "last knowned good configuration" but every time it freezes at the same place. I tried booting from a winxp installation disk and it gets to menu:
Press enter to install windows xp
Press r to repair
Press f3 to not install windows xp
But none of the buttons work, i put the ide hard drive in another computer and i formated it and hooked it back up to the original pc and it still will not go past the above menu. I even tried a different ide hdd and the same thing is happening. I don't think its the drive that's bad so i changed ide cables and we get the same thing again.

Random Freezes
As some of you know, i recently upgraded my mobo, cpu, and ram without reinstalling windows. For the most part, i have had no problems, but i do get a few random freezes. My friend had the same problem with this board, but he upgraded his bios and all was solved. Thing is, this board shipped to me with a beta bios. So i'm not sure if that could be it. Also, my c&c3 will no longer run. I've tried restarting and reinstalling with no luck. Unless someone here can help me, i'm going to reinstall windows tomorrow.

Mysterious Freezes
I've been having some strange freezes and hung apps the past couple of days. It all started when i installed tiger woods 2005, for whatever reason the install shield app would hang after i completely installed the program. In game, tiger woods had a few errors such as being unable to initialize courses. I tried reinstalling, same problem with the install shield hanging at the end and not being able to load courses. Tried uninstalling, wouldn't uninstall even though it said it had been according to add/remove. I manually uninstalled the game and removed any trace of ea sports and tiger woods from the registry. Flash forward a few hours. A program i use to watch dvd's started freezing my entire pc. I put everything back to stock. Same problem, tried a few different things with nothing helping. I then ran ms's check disc where it scans the hd after a reboot and the freezing just went away. I was able to defragment the drive fine. Does this sound like my hard drive might be dying or could anything else be causing this? Any tools i can use to check and make sure it's the hard drive? It's the oldest thing i have in my pc. A 60 gig wd hd from a little over 3 years ago so it wouldn't surprise me if it was dying.

Computer Sometimes Freezes
I have run all sorts of health tests on the hard drive, and it passed all with flying colors. My old raptor x did not do this. Basically, sometimes the screen will freeze. I can move the mouse for a bit, but that will freeze as well, which requires me to force a reboot. This freeze is not consistent, as i can have the pc on for hours without encountering this. What do you guys think it is? I am using windows 7, so could it just be that, since it's a beta?

Freezes When Gaming
Specs:
* Intel core i7 920 nehalem 2. 66ghz lga 1366 130w quad
* Asus p6t deluxe lga 1366 intel x58 atx
* Sapphire ati radeon 4870 1gb 256-bit gddr5
* Corsair 6gb ram
* Corsair 750w psu
* Windows vista 32bit (going to move to windows 7, so didn't want to pay extra for 64bit now)
Drivers:
* Ati driver: 8. 612-090428a-080268c-ati catalyst version 09. 5, 8. 01. 01. 899
* Direct3d: 8. 14. 10. 0662 (directx 10)
* Opengl: 6. 14. 10. 8664
Temps:
* Steady for all cores in the upper 40s
* Coretemp and speedfan show some fans aren't working, but i see them spinning, so. * Not sure about video card temp, working on rivatuner. Problem:
* Full system hard freeze
* No errors or bsod
* Only while playing video games
Diagnostics already done:
* Avg/ad-aware ok
* Defrag & hd tune are ok, no bad sectors
To-do:
* Uninstall all video card drivers and redo catalyst install
* Figure out how to get rivatuner to sync with my video card
* Memtest
Randomly freezes constantly while playing video games such as everquest 2. I can be logged in for a few minutes and then it freezes the entire system. I'll have to hard reboot to bring it back up. Otherwise i have no issues, can watch movies, do regular tasks like browsing and whatnot without any issues. So i believe it is my video card, but it's just a hunch based on what i've already said. Any other suggestions?
