Recognize Unformatted, External Usb Hd

I have an unformatted toshiba 1. 8" disk drive (mk4006gah) and an external usb case to it. When i connect it to my pc win xp says the hd was recognized correctly and ready to use. But it never appears in my computer as extra storage. Is it because the drive isn't formatted? If so, how can i format the drive when it doesn't show up in my computer?

Imac Doesn't Recognize Usb External Hard Disk

My new imac doesn't recognize my external hard disk (usb connection), which i used for. ? I am a new apple owner and user, just converted from an ms based pc environment. The drive is a western digital, on which i have stored all my pictures, music (itunes ironically) and ms office documents. I thought - or should i say hoped - it was just "plug and play", but this is clearly not the case. The imac does not recognize the drive. I can see that the drive is getting power from the usb, but i can also hear that it is not running properly (sounds like it is try to initialize again and again) and it does not show up in the devices menu. I have tried a couple of flash discs in the same usb port and they work. I have also tried to connect the external disk to different usb port, but to no avail. What do i do?

Ps3 Slim Won't Recognize Wd Usb 3.0 External Hard Drive

I've been trying for the last 3 days to connect my western digital mybook usb 3. 0 1tb external drive to my ps3 slim to no avail. I've went through *** and back so i wonder if it is even possible? Is the ps3 capable of backward compatibility with this drive?

I know many people have connected a 2. 0 usb external to a ps3 but i've googled and asked tech friends, game owners, sony ps3, wd, seagate, buffalo, adata. You name it. Yes of course i formatted the whole drive(partition)935gb into fat32 using various software programs; swissknife, acronis, partition wizard. They all show after completion that the drive was formatted to fat32. I even tried making folders; video, pictures, music and still no go. Is there something i'm missing? Is it a chipset issue or a host controller defecit on ps3's end? The funny thing is it will read my fat32 supertalent usb 3. 0 16gb flash drive so i dont know if the flash turns into a 2. 0 usb read that ps3 recognizes but it can't do that with the build of an external drive, maybe bc it's just a wd black or blue cavier sata with a controller laned into 3. 0 usb ports inserted into a tower. If anyone has had success with any of the usb 3. 0 external drives please let me know the amazing fix. I even thought there may be a difference with the usb 2. 0 and 3. 0 cables and iwould have to switch to a 2. 0 to connect to ps3. I'm not leaving any stone unturned. I contacted sony ps3 and they escalated it for the next meeting, so they say. Wd has no clue and will look into it. Seagate tech support told me right away it isn't supported but didn't say why bc i had to convey questions to the girl on the phone. Buffalo didn't know, so i contacted various retailers in canada that sell the drives to see if there was any feedback from customers or tech savvy employees. No one seems to know. Yet this could be a simple fix or it might be impossible with ps3's current setup and may be fixed if/when ps4 is released. I doubt a patch or firmware can fix this but you never know. It would be interesting to see if the ps3 will recognize a ssd in a usb 3. 0 enclosure. I have a ocz agility 2 ssd new and may try this b4 i install it with my original intention as internal for windows 7 64 bit os and media. I also bought an asus u3s6 card that comes with 2 usb 3. 0 ports. I have many people working on this even the main manager at canada computers as he is a ps3 fan and is very interested himself which is good because the more brains that inquire and trouble shoot the better the chance of a solution either soon or in the future. So once again, thanks for anyone that has had success with these drives and i'll be sure to post any information i receive.

Xp Install Wont Recognize My Backup External Hard Drive

I know i have to assign the external hard drive a drive letter but i don't know how to do it without formatting the drive. I obviously don't want to format the drive because it has all of my backup information from my old hard drive. The hdd is a western digital oem 320gb ide put into an external enclosure. The external enclosure worked perfect on old computer, but it was formatted on it. When i turn on the hdd my computer recognizes it as a usb mas storage device, it just doesn't assign it a drive letter. When i run western digital's data lifeguard tools it wants to set up the drive and make it additional storage, but it also must partition and format the drive before it can do so. For some reason i assumed this would be easy, i almost feel like im taking crazy pills. When i go into windows disk management all i can do is partition and format the drive, maybe im missing something.

External Hard Drive Spins But Doesn't Recognize

The drive is a western digital elements wde1u5000n 500gb. The problem is that the drive turns on and spins, but windows never says installing new hardware or anything like that. After googling:
I've tried connecting it on 3 different pc's all running windows xp sp3. It's not the usb cable. Cannot see it in disk managment. Disabling 1394 port doesn't make it work. Tried to connect it into a wall outlet instead of a surge protector as well. Think it's just dead?

Computer Doesn't Recognize External Hard Drive

I have a basic wd external hard drive. Suddenly, when i plug it into my computer, the computer isn't recognizing it. I also plugged it into my husband's computer. Not recognized. It was working about 3 days ago. Anywhere i can find this, other than my computer? I am not that computer literate, but i know that there is a problem here. Has my 4 year olds' pics on it since they were born (and everything from my hp laptop that died after only 2 years).

Unformatted Partition Recovery

I just had a partition say that it wasn't formatted. Only one of them, from a hard drive that is split into 3 partitions. It had tons of music/mp3s/tv shows/games/backups on it and i am trying to think of how to get it back. Any ideas? Right not it is showing up as an unformatted 74gb partition in my computer and disk manager. Anyone ever have a similar problem as this? I am considering formatting it (with a quick format) then trying to use a data recovery program to get the data back.

Usb Sometimes Does Not Recognize The Hardware Attach

I have an kt3 ultra- aru (ms-6380e) motherboard and i am running windows xp professional. I have a usb2 bracket with 4 ports and and a d bracket with 2 further usb ports. Everything seems to be connected properly, but the usb sometimes does not recognize the hardware i attach. The printer and scanner are ok, so is a usb bluetooth dongle, however, when i try to plug anything in the other spaces i keep getting messages about usb surges etc. I also get a message which tells me the printer could run alot faster using a usb2 connection. The printer is already in one of the usb sockets. I have had a look in the device manager and all the drivers look ok but i could be wrong. Can someone plaese tell me how i can test my usb ports and make sure that they are running at the correct speed (usb2). Also, why is it coming up as a surge warning when i connect my camera ?.

Ps3 Wont Recognize Anything In Usb Ports

The ps3 wont recognize my usb flash drive or my psp anymore. It did earlier today, it was the first time i tried it. I bought crash bandicoot in the ps store and it said connect psp via usb, i did and it worked. Later i put in my flash drive into the fourth port on the front and i went to game save data or whatever and it recognized that. Not 10 minutes later when i re tried it it would recognize either. What gives. Is it broken? Do i need to replace it, or is it a simple setting. I already reset the ps3 system settings and that did nothing. I cant figure it out.

Ps3 Won't Recognize Usb Device

I'm having a little problem with my usb and ps3. I've recently downloaded the latest ps3 firmware update and placed it on a folder 'update' and placed the update folder on 'ps3' folder. I followed all the instructions so no problems there. The usb used to work on my ps3 before but now it won't recognize it, the light on my usb keeps on blinking. It works well on my pc (the light doesn't blink but just stays lit). I've updated my ps3 software before using this method and it worked fine, but now it can't seem to recognize it. I've searched for media servers and there nothing.

Windows Xp Pro Doesn't Recognize The Usb Mouse

I just got the mx500 mouse from logitech. Seems to have problems with the usb ports on my asus p4b533-e motherboard. Whenever i turn on the system, windowsxp (pro) doesn't recognize the mouse. If i remove the cable and plug it back into the usb port, it detects it immediately. I've installed the latest mouseware drivers and usb 2. 0 drivers for my motherboard. I've checked the connections and this problem is persists with all the 6 usb ports. Checked the asus site, and i seem to have the latest bios version. This happens only when i turn off the computer completely and then turn it back on, not when i restart it. Logitech support couldn't figure out what the problem is and gave me some crappy solution. Right now i've installed a usb to ps/2 converter and the mouse is installed in the ps/2 port. Can somebody help with this?

Usb Cables For External Hdd

I have usb cables that came with a couple, can't remember if all, of my usb hdd enclosures that have, idk exactly what it is, some type of resistor, or something, the little cylindrical fitting that goes around cable next to plug, and i'm wondering what that accomplishes, and if it's necessary to have. Can i replace with standard usb cable or is it important?

Unable To Detect Usb External Sata Hd

I have recently had what seems to be a power bump on one of my external hard drives. It's a western digital caviar re2 model number wd4000yr-01plb0. I had this drive in a sata enclosure with proper cooling and connections. I have tested the enclosure on 2 other sata drives and they function fine. The on-board diagnostic checks out on the drive, however my computer will not recognize the drive. Nothing in disk management or device manager. Anyone have anything that i could do to try and recover the information on the drive? I am unsure in which direction to go next as this is my backup drive and it would truly suck to loose the info stored on it.

How To Fix A Possibly Broken Usb On My External Hd ?

Recently i had to reconnect jusb pins on my motherboard, and i might have done it wrong. Since then, my external western digital passport external harddisk cannot be recognized on any pc. Windows sees it as an unknown device, and the popup says "this device has malfunctioned [. ]", On any computer. I'm affraid the usb port in the hd is damaged due to wrongly connected pins (the board manual indeed says that some damage may occur due to bad placement of pins, only i saw it too late ). Is there any way i can replace the usb port on the hd without paying fortune to data-recovery companies? Or, is there a data-recovery software which could detect my data?

External Usb Hard Drive Recommendation

I'm looking to purchase an external usb drive for my desktop pc to serve as a backup for all my saved game files, steam files and other files, are there any particular ones that stand out? Any ones to avoid? I'll need a minimum of 500gb of space. I never purchased an external drive before, is it better to get one with a separate power supply?

Are there any usb 3. 0 external drives available? If i get a 3. 0 drive then i can still use it on my usb 2. 0 motherboard right (but with 2. 0 transfer speeds of course)?

Computer Cannot Detect Usb 2.0 External Hdd

My computer cannot detect my usb 2. 0 external hdd, it was working only a few minutes ago, then i removed it through "safely remove hardware" after that i realized i forgot something so i plugged it back on. The light of my external hdd is on, but my computer isn't responding, it isn't showing any signs of another hdd in "my computer" and also in the "safely remove hardware" thing. I tried in my other computer and it's the same. I've scanned through for viruses previously, and cleared 3 trojans. Shouldn't be of a problem tho. Is my newly bought external hdd faulty ? Or has my computer gone mad?

P/s i also got this common problem that my external hdd couldn't be read directly, i have to - rightclick - explore. I believe this is a common n00b mistake i have done to my hdd or something.

External Hdd, Sata Or Usb For Backup

Situation;
Three pc's; two towers (both w/ two hdd's) and one laptop (not used often), not alot of data, but instead of using dvd's to backup, this seems easier, one device for all three would be nice, though the laptop i could live without, it would be used mainly for my main box (tower). Questions;
1. If i went with a usb interface, can i assume the ps is external?

2. Can i then assume most are those damn 'bricks' as opposed to internal ps's within the hdd enclosure?

3. Are there any models w/ internal ps's, or at least a ps that is on a cable so it isn't hanging from the power strip?

4. Between the all in one (hdd, enclosure & ps) vs buying the enclosure, ps and the hdd separately, what's the better route?

5. If i went with a sata drive, are there any enclosures that are tailored to this setup?

6. The cabling from the pc to the unit. Make shift or use a premade pci slot plate w/ connectors (assuming they are available)?

Disconnecting Usb External Hdd With Switch

I used to have an external hdd with a separate electrical outlet to power it and even though it was a little bulky but this design was comfortable to me because i'm always very interested to disconnect the drive after any backup i need by using a "power switch outlet" with on/off keys where pressing the button connects power to the drive and windows xp sees it and vice versa without any need to physically removing/attaching any thing. P. S. I do this to prolong the drive's lifetime and to keep it away from any possible problems occurring to my pc. Etc. Now this drive is dead for some reason so i went to buy another one but i was stuck with a usb powered drive (wd my passport essential) and it's ok but the only thing that teases me is that i can't control the power since it's usb controlled so the drive starts spinning when i turn on my computer's power switch so the only way for me to control this is disconnecting/connecting the usb cable with the port whenever i don't need/need the drive which is not convenient at all. Is there any solution (like a cable) which allows me to control the drive's status (on/off) with a simple key switch without the need to physically remove/attach the usb cable from the back of my machine so that whenever i need/don't need the drive, i simply switch on/off a key on this cable?

Usb Hub For Scanners, External Hard Drives

I've had some bad luck with usb hubs in the past, but haven't used one in quite some time. I just got a new laptop and will be hooking up several usb items - scanners, external hard drives, cell phone, etc. I want something that has a power adapter as things such as the scanner and hard drives are hub-powered. I would prefer a 7-port model, as 4 will not be enough.
