What Can Be Causing Hard Drive Data Corruption ?

Ok, i know my question could have a thousand possible answers (searching the forums, it appears so), but iím really stumped here. My hard drive keeps getting "data corruption errors" where it has "one or more unrecoverable problems" according to chkdsk /r. I donít know why my wd 160gb 1600js sata hard drive gets this problem. I am unable to properly boot into windows, and if i am able, programs open really slowly. Any ideas what could be the problem? It happened a few weeks ago, and i reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything (with the help of another hard drive with windows on it). Now, it happened again. The data corrupt issues started when i bought the ocz stealth xstream psu to replace a high-pitch whine antec psu. But according to the bios, the rail readings appear to be ok and nothing is overclocked, its just an office-use machine. One more thing, i didnít install the nvidia ide drivers (i still remember the horrors from when i had the nf2).

Corruption When Transferring Data From Usb

I have noticed that sometimes images i transfer from digicams to my computer are corrupted, either the image is scrambled or completely unreadable. No matter the camera, flash card, device used to read the card, or computer its read on, this happens. So far i have only noticed it in regards to images, but i have no idea if everything i transfer can risk corruption as well. Any idea why this is happening? I have used several different sd->sb and miscosd->usb adapters and different computers with different operating systems and all of them seem to suffer from this, and its rare but when transferring hundreds of images it starts to have a higher chance of happening, you only notice it much later when one of your images fails to load or is scrambled. I do a lot of data transferal and backup through usb, if this keeps happening and isn't just limited to image files then who knows how much damage has been caused, and it essentially makes backups useless. Any idea why this is happening? What i can do about it? Is there any program out there that can scan my pc for corrupted image files?

Dvd Rom Drive, Flash Hard Drive Slowing Data Transfer Speed

Issue a: when i put a cd/dvd into my dvd, the system (my computer/properties) recognizes the hardware, but it will not play. (Drive letter "d". )

Issue b: my computer will not recognize my data (flash?) Cards from my digital camcorder/camera. Issue c: my computer's hard drive (drive letter "c") once accepted my firewire uplink (1333). Now, my nle (pinnacle studio 9 plus) give the error message "drive c is not capable of capturing dv data", meaning it's date transfer rate is too slow. How can i fix these issues? Do i have to buy a new hard drive?

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Delete Data From Hard Drive

I have to rma a drive back to western digital. It is still functional so i would like to wipe the thing clean of data first. What do you guys recommend for doing such a thing? I would prefer a windows based solution. I would hook the drive up to a working pc as a second drive and go from there. I don't really want to make a boot disk and go that route. Any suggestions?

I need help to retrieve the data from my western digital hard drive (40g). Last week my power supply burnt and damaged my mother board. So i tested with another existing system unit with my wd hard drive, it hang in the bios stage after the memory test finish. Cannot do anything. Is it the hard drive problem? May i know anyone can tell me how can i recover my data inside this bad hard drive? I need to recover my data since wd technical support only can give me a replacement of hard drive. Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.

Hard Drive Problem - Data Recovery

I got a harddrive here that's running windows 98 and while you try and boot in it's just fatal error after fatal error. . Vxd's .dlls, mass blue screens and just ends in a freeze up eventually. I'd give the names of the files thats giving errors but it's literally different ones every time. I tried to get into the os from safe mode and it returned a himem.sys error. I figured the ram might be bad but it's good so i copied himem.sys from the 98 cd into windows directory in dos, but still getting the same error. I'm at a loss for what to do now and suppose the only thing i can do is try and recover the data and wipe the harddrive. I was wondering if perhaps i could connect the harddrive to my windows xp machine and salvage the data through there or if anyone has tips on how i could go about this i'd be most thankful.

New Installation Hard Drive Data Recovery

Here's the situation:

1. Had a pc with a motherboard that crashed. 2. Pc had 400 gig hard drive of which 380 gigs of data was used leaving 20 gigs remaining. 3. Replaced the motherboard and installed a new windows partition in the remaining 20 gigs of data. 4. Windows runs and everything works fine. However:

1. Old partition 'c:' says it's corrupted. New partition 'e:' says it has around 400 gigs free. 2. Even though 'c:' should contain 380 gigs of data and 'e:' should only contain the remaining 20 gigs. How do i recover my data?

Preserving Data While Formatting External Hard Drive

I recently purchased a new ps3 and would like to transfer some audio and video files to it from my external hard drive. I ran into a problem, however, in that my hard drive is formatted in ntfs and the ps3 can only read fat32. I have about 260 of 300 gb filled, and not enough space on my pc to hold the files while i reformat my external. Is there any simple way for me to somehow format the hard drive in fat32 and still be able to restore all the data that's on it afterward?

Ive considered using mozy to temporarily and cheaply store my files on-line while i reformat, but worry both about reliability and the time it would take to backup and restore such a large amount of data. While doing research i've read recommendations for the use of programs like partition magic in similar situations, but i have no knowledge regarding such things and don't know if i'd be able to shrink the partition enough for it to fit in the small amount of free space that is available. Would my best bet be to try to temporarily get my hands on another external hard drive to hold all of the data while i reformat?

How To Pull Data Off Dead Laptop Hard Drive?

I've done it multiple times in the past, but this time i fear the drive itself may be damaged. My laptop just died and i used a sata-to-usb converter to connected the pulled hard drive to an old power mac g4. It shows up in disk utility but doesn't mount. Any help is appreciated, as i foolishly don't have a backup. All i want to is to mount the drive one last time in order to perform a feel backup.

58xx Series Screen Corruption

Anyone else seen these types of corruption? I would say there are three distinct cases of corruption that i've seen. The first is some of the corruption that only happens on the center screen every so often and is a corruption of the cursor. This lennovo 2440x is connected by displayport. Happens across all applications. What i see is dependent on what form the cursor takes. For the second type of corruption we go to the left monitor when the corruption is happening on the center monitor i also get some corruption on the left monitor which is a benq2400wd connected by dvi. Notice the corruption of the top of the dirt2 shortcut but nothing else!

For the third type of corruption every pixel seems to be effected. There is a grid pattern to it, it looks like there is pixel crossover where all the pixels are rendered but a little to far this way or that in reoccurring bands. The overall effect is that it makes everything blurry with lots of noise. The side monitors were unaffected, adjusting displayport connector did nothing, but a restart made it go away. This type of corruption can really only be appreciated in motion so here it is in video form. First firefox then modern warfare. http://www.Flickr.com/photos/35177911@n07/4307713561/
http://www.Flickr.com/photos/35177911@n07/4308378218/

I also updated to this catalyst http://forums. Guru3d.com/showthread.php?T=313969 as others with the same configuration more or less were reporting good things. The corruption on the dirt2 shortcut went away, for now, but the entire screen corruption on center monitor is back. A restart makes it go away now going on 2 days without this type of corruption.

Pci.sys Is Corruption After Installing Drivers

I just built my new system, installed windows and everything seemed fine, then i tried installing the boards drivers and the system crashed, then when i restarted the pc, it couldnt start windows sayin, system32/driver/pci.sys was corrupted or damaged. I tred fixing the system and i wasnt able to, so i formated the disc, and installed windows again, and that happens again and again. Pci.sys gets corrupted again, i updated the bios and tried indtalling the boards drivers one by one and downloading them from the web site of the manufacturer, and when i was installing the first one motherboard_driver_chipset_intel_inf_965.exe" same thing happened. Also im not very sure, but i think in one of my many attempts i installed the gpu drivers first than the board drivers and same thing happened. Now after restarting the pc a million times and having done nothing to really repair the file, the pc started again, and eventhough it was very slow, at the beginning, after some more reboots it seems to be ok now and i was able to install al the boards and gpu drivers except the motherboard_driver_chipset_intel_inf_965.exe one. Thing is im sure my oc wont be stable for long, and this seems to be a hardware problem, but i dont have an idea of how to identify what is really happening, so i would really appreciate if you could give it a good thought and give me a solution.

Trouble In Transfering Data To Usb 80 Gb Hard Disk

I have a usb 1. 1 comptble gygabyte motherboard, because of this im getting trouble in transfering datas to ma usb 80 gb hard disk. It takes such a long time to copy 1 cd file. Its really hard to change ma usb 1. 1 to usb 2. 0, so im planning to buy a pci usb 2. 0 card. But now my doubt is will it support for my usb hard drive, coz i heard that usb hards need more power and pci slots give only few(less) amount of power through the slot. So if i buy a pci, is there will be a problem in giving proper power for usb hard. Or, is there any other idea or solution for this problem.

How Much Data Can You Put On A Drive ?

Is there a limit on how much data can be placed on a 20gb, 80 gb, 120 gb, etc. Drive. In other words do you need to have a certain amount of space (say 5 gb or percentage) available. Also does this apply to both a drive that contains an operating system and a drive that only contains data?

Get Data Off A Raid 1 Drive

I have a raid 1 set up with the onboard via vt6410 ide raid controller of my asus p4p800 deluxe mobo. Sadly, i think the mobo is dead (might be the cpu . Not sure). In any case, i can't access the data on my drives with this pc. The question is, how do i get the data off my drive?

Would it be possible to just plug one of the raid 1 drives into another pc ide port as a slave, and access the data? (My guess is i can't, but want to make sure there's not a really simple solution here. )

If this won't work, can i buy a different raid controller, install it into another computer, plug my two drives into this controller as a slave, have it recognize that the drives are already in a raid 1 configuration, and allow me to remove the data?

Does the raid controller need to be the exact same as the original (this would suck b/c as i mentioned, it was the onboard controller of a long since discontinued mobo). Is there any way to determine which raid controllers would be compatible with my raid 1 drives?

Repair Drive - Recover The Data

I have a 20gig hd with two partitions one 5gig for os and the other 15gig for data and programs etc. The other day i turned my machine on and the d: drive (15gig partition) was missing. It just didnt show the partition at all. Now somehow i managed to get it to display the partition but every time you go to open the drive it says it isnt formatted and needs to be. Now i am not sure what has happened but i am guessing it has got something to do with the file system. I am sure that the pc hasnt wiped all the data of my drive so it should be recoverable, i just would like to know if anyone knows how to solve the problem or if there are any programs available that will help repair te drive/recover the data.

Which 1.5tb Drive To Get For Data Backup ?

I'd like to get either the seagate or wd green 1. 5tb drives for backup, but both have bad ratings. Have the seagates really improved in quality? I already have a few wd10eads drives and am very happy with them, so i'd prefer the wd15eads esp since it'll run cooler and speed is not an issue. But that has even worse ratings than the seagate, and its more $$ as well.

1tb - 2tb Data Drive

I was planning on getting a new 1-2tb storage drive for my next build (primary will be a ssd). 1tb should be enough, but i am willing to spend more for a 1. 5 or 2tb if it makes sense. Assuming the ssd may only be an 80gb, i will be running some games off the storage drive, so i would like some performance. I'm really not too familiar of the world outside of wd, as i have been burned by almost every other companies, but am willing to listen. Right now, i'm planning on getting the wd1001fals for ~$100. Is there a better option? It doesn't have to be silent, but i don't want it sitting down there rattling either. http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16822136284

Any other recommendations?
