Substitute For Mouse And Keyboard Using Htpc

Does anybody know of anything i could use to substitute a mouse and keyboard to a htpc. I want to be able to navigate the pc with being stuck with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Something small and able to blend well with the other remotes. If not, we need to design one.

Wireless Keyboard / Mouse Recommendations For Htpc

I am finishing up the conversion of this free pc into a media/ht pc. I've found a case that can handle my 8800gts and still be cool and quiet, i've found a new motherboard/cool running processor to use (amd 5050e/780 chipset), i've even been doing research on a remote starter, which likely won't happen as this comp will run 99. 9% of the time. I've got the new case and hard drive (640gb se16 wd, going to triple boot xp/vista/ubuntu once i get my new board). I'll likely leave the videocard as the rare times i do play demanding games i can live with 4x aa. But now i've got to find a solution to the cabling dilemma. The monitor/case can sit across the room from my chair/bed, and i want a good mouse/keyboard that can be used wirelessly, cheaply, and not have any sort of delay. So recommendations to further my project?

Suggestions For Wireless Keyboard, Mouse For Htpc / Gaming

Okay got my new htpc rig set up on my 62" dlp so i can now do my ht and gaming now. My old keyboard and mouse won't cut it (old logitch and mce kb). I have tried the logitech mx5000 bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and bottom line, lag is impossible. It's like a good 2-3 second delay at random intervals. My next choice i was considiring was the ms desktop elite, but have read similar but lots fewer complaints about lag. I need a mouse that at least has 1 or two side buttons. Distance from htpc to couch is in the 10' to 12' range max. I'm open to suggestions and or experience with the ms elite.

Building Htpc Like Computer

I'm requiring some input from you guys. It's been a long time since i build my last rig. It's now time for me to do a complete overhaul, and like always, things have been evolving quite a lot since the last time i've put my hands at work! I've done my homework like i always do, looking and searching on the net for benchmarks, reviews, etc. I just want to know what you guys are thinking about the following. Any recommendation or advice are always welcome! What i already have :

Processor : intel core 2 quad q9550 (slb8v e0)
Memory : 2 x 2gb ddr2 corsair dominator (cm2x2048-8500c5d)
Display : i want to use me lcd tv, a 52" samsung ln52a750
Primary hdd : wd 74 gig raptor (for os and applications)

And now what i'm planning to get :

Motherboard : gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p
I chose this one because i wanted to keep the option for crossfire. I problably will never do it, but well, just in case. Others choices were the ud3r version and the asus p5q pro and pro turbo. Case : silverstone crown cw02b-mxr
Wanted an htpc-like case, but finding one with adequate ventilation and size for components was a real pita. So i finally settled for this (big) case and i'm sure i would be happy with it. Plenty of space!

Cpu heatsink : thermalright ultra 120 extreme
Prolimatech megahalems would have been nice too, but thermalright's availability (from where i am) is more convenient. Psu : corsair professionnal hx850
Wanted a modular one. An hx750 would probably have been enough, but for the price difference, an hx850 seems to be the way to go. Videocard : a certain hd4870 1 gig
Here i need your advise. I want a capable vidcard, but not a noisy one. I'll be playing @ 1920x1080. Secondary hdd : hitachi deskstar 7k1000. B 1tb (hdt721010sla360)
Seems to me a good hd, price and performance wise. It will mainly be the place where i'll be putting my game installation folder, my documents, my dvd rips, mp3, etc. Odd : lg ggc h20l
Needed something to read dvds, blu-rays with the ability to burn dvds for backup purpose. Seems to me a perfect choice. Fans : unknown
I haven't search for that yet. I know i will need 4 of them : 2 x 92mm intake, 1 x 120mm exhaust ans 1 x 120mm for the true cpu cooler. They need to be as much silent as possible, but powerful enough to do an excellent job. Any suggestion are welcome here!

Os : unknown
A couple of month ago, vista 32 bits seemed the way to go. As of today, i'm not sure. Is vista 64 bits would be the choice of excellence? Windows 7 maybe? Again, any suggestion are welcome here!

This is approximately how the computer will be use for :

35% - gaming
15% - watching movies
25% - internet related things
25% - working

Need something enough powerful to play games @ 1920x1080 with high details and fluid fps. Movies
I plan to mostly watch regular dvds and blu-ray. I also want to be able to play most type of videos files. Internet
Well, nothing really specific here. Working
I'm a graphic designer, so mainly the use of adobe cs4 software (photoshop, indesign ans illustrator). Add to this some 3d modeling and animation with lightwave. Overcloaking
I do plan to do some mild overcloaking. I liked my first experience with my current rig (athlon 64 x2 3800+ with a dfi nf4 ultra-d), so i want to continue having fun with this. That's it! That's mainly what i have in mind. Please feel free to comment, criticizes and suggest things. Aside for what's already in my possession, nothing else is set in stone!

Many thanks in advance for everyone who will contribute!

Htpc-tivo-snapstream Question

I am putting together a htpc box and i want to be able to record all of my favorite shows. I understand that snapstream and xp-mce can accomplish this by using a tv capture card and archiving the shows in mpeg2. Or wmv or whatever. Not important. What baffles me is that you need to connect the cable to your computer right? But all of my channels are scrambled and i need to run it through my cable box. Meaning that i need to have my cable box on to watch hbo and other premiums. Even comedy central. How can my htpc record these scrambled channels? What if i have digital cable. I am not sure how the whole thing works.

Using A Toshiba Portege R500 As A Htpc

* Intel core 2 duo u7600 1. 20ghz, 2mb l2, 533mhz fsb with 64-bit
* 1024mb pc2-5300 ddr2 sdram
* One memory slot available (up to 2gb maximum)
* 120gb (5400 rpm); serial-ata hard disk drive
* 7mm, 8xdvd-supermulti (+/-r single layer) drive supporting 9 formats
* 12. 1-inch diagonal widescreen highbrightness display
* 1280 x 800 (wxga) - transreflective backlit led
* Intel graphics media accelerator 950 with 64mb
* Intel wireless wifi link 4965agn (802. 11a/g/n)
* Bluetooth 2. 0 + edr

Lcd screen is broken so i got it free at work. I was thinking of using it as a htpc since i can just hook it up to a 46" lcd and watch bluray rips. Do you guys think it will work? I will add another stick of ram to make it 2gb total for $15. I am considering a 320gb 7200rpm hdd for $80 as well but my brain tells me it's not worth it. I need speed speed speed to play movies, not capacity as i already have tons of usb hdds lying around. What do you guys think?

Upgrade hdd and copy movies from usb hdd to local hdd or just play it off the usb hdd?

Htpc Issue (delayed Audio/out Of Sync)

When i play blu-ray movies or just play 1080p trailers, after a couple of seconds the audio becomes out of sync. Now, is this because i'm using the 8200 off my mobo? Do i have to buy a new cpu or buy a dedicated low-profile gpu?

Bluray Htpc Stream 720p Over Wireless Network

Basically, the goal of this build is that i want a blu-ray player with the ability to stream 720p over my wireless network, or watch hulu. It will be attached to my 720p tv, through hdmi, and hooked into my 5. 1 surround sound. I'm looking to spend as little as possible, while still being able to play 720p (of any of the common compressions) and blu-ray flawlessly. Sort of a secondary goal is to keep it quiet. It's going to be in a little stand that should block most of the noise, but if i could passively cool the cpu, that would be an extra bonus. Willing to underclock, as long as it still plays flawlessly. Performance > noise. I've got a quiet seagate hd that i'm reusing, but everything else needs to be new. Also, i've had 5 unfortunate recent experiences with rebates in a row, so i'm refusing to mess with them this time around. I've got access to vista enterprise (32 or 64), or i have a loose copy of xp 32-bit. I'm running vista 64 on my machines right now, but whichever will give me the best performance (my guess is xp?) I'll install. I'm experienced with a couple linux flavors as well, enough so that i'm pretty sure i want to stick to windows for this machine.

Keyboard / Mouse Unresponsive

I had put in my usb flash drive, then my computer rebooted, so the computer boots back up, and now the keyboard and mouse functions do not work, i can no longer log into windows. I thought maybe it was a random thing, so i reboot again and it does the same thing, no response from my input devices. So i check to make sure these devices are still working by hooking them up to my other pc, sure enough, they still work. So then i test to see if i can even get into the bios. Well, thankfully i can, so it must be something while booting to windows after the post, cause the computer sees the hardware and lets me use it during setup, but not on the windows login screen. I even tried different ports, and different keyboard and mice ( ps2 and usb ) and they all will not work on this now dysfunctional pc. Can somebody help me as to why this is happening? This is rather strange, i changed no setting. Why working only in bios?

Keyboard / Mouse Freeze On Xp

The mouse always works until you try to type something, and then the keyboard and mouse quit working. The computer itself is not frozen. Sometimes the computer has to be restarted 5+ times to get it to work right. Do you think it is an issue with the keyboard, or the ps/2 ports? I could not find a virus. It has a cheap lite-on keyboard and roswill mouse.

Mouse Headset And Keyboard Under 30 Each

I'm looking at either the microsoft habu or the razer diamondback, how different is the diamondback in terms of shape since i found the habu to be very comfortable? Headset wise i'm looking at the plantronics gamecom 367 or the sennheiser pc151 headset i don't really like logitech since the last two headsets i've had were logitech and their sound quality has been pretty awful. This combined with the complete lack of durability (one of the earpieces in my current headset died randomly and the other one fell off and refused to reattach) has put me off logitech. I was looking at the saitek eclipse ii or something in that sort of price range. I'm only willing to pay up to 30 for any of the peripherals.

Bluetooth Keyboard / Mouse

I have a customer looking for a wireless keyboard and mouse but he needs it to go 16 feet without any issues. I think the bt ones can do that no problem but they all seem to cost $200! Does anyone know if there is a decent kit in the $100 range? If not are there non-bt models like the 2. 4ghz ones that can do that range?

I saw some of the logitech wave kits with 2. 4ghz but in the reviews cust said they started having problems over 10 feet. Any suggestions would be great he doesn't want to spend $200+ on a kb/mouse but he needs the range!

Keyboard And Mouse Stop Working

My mouse and keyboard started to be non responsive. I would be in the middle of writing a sentence, but all of a sudden my keyboard and mouse would stop working, then about 10 seconds later start up again. It wasn't a total system freeze, because chat messages would still appear on msn, and everything would still move about on screen when i was playing a game. This happened on and off for about 1 hour, until i couldn't get the keyboard or mouse to work at all. I booted my pc this morning, but my keyboard and mouse still failed to work. It would boot into vista and xp fine (im dual booting), but they still wouldn't work - even before i could get into windows. I reset cmos, i tried switching out the ram but nothing seems to work, and the problem seems to be getting worse. About 5 mins ago, i tried to boot into xp, but my whole system froze, and my motherboard let out a faint single beep. When i boot up, i get a single beep telling me that all (should be) fine. Anyone ever had this problem? Or anyone know how to fix it? I have tried different keyboards and mice, and i've tried plugging the usb ones in different sockets, but it didn't make a difference.

Color Keyed Mouse / Keyboard

Does anyone know where i can find a decent quality keyboard and mouse combo? The one on is sort of what i am looking for. Mitsuko is the maker of this "blue" set, and i have never hear of them. Is this manufacturer any good? I was looking for something along the lines of viewsonics keyboards, but the only one that i liked on newegg was the silver combo. This wouldnt go well with my dragon blue chieftech case if you get my drift. Anyone know where i could find the viewsonic line of keyboards in blue, or any other quality manufacturer? How is the quality of the mitsuko line of keyboard/mice?
