Hdd Drive Setting
Replies: 11 | Post Date: 02-01-2007, 07:47 PM | User: Testing | Forums: forums.techpowerup.comI've added a new hdd to the system but it has not been given a drive label. Device manager read the hdd after first o/s boot, and sees properly what it is. It also states the drive is working properly and drivers are most recent. Yet i cannot see or access the drive (my computer, dos etc). Physically the connections are well. The hdd has no jumpers and is running off the slave connection of the cable. Bios however, states that group 2 is cd drives, group 3 is hdd drives and group 4 is networking drives. It also states that the main hdd is on the the third controller, on it's own, while the new hdd is a slave to the second controller where the master is the cd drive. Oddly enough, the group 3 hdd priority lists the new hdd as main, and the original hdd as secondary, yet the computer boots straight off the main(original) hdd without a hitch. The main hdd is also paritioned (safety recovery partition) so effectively it's using c: and d:. E: is for the cd. F, g, h, i are removable usb storage and j: is a virtual cd drive. I tried to take a stab at command line with "k:" but invalid.

Setting Up Raid 0 - Without A Floppy Drive
I'm getting a laptop with 2 x 120gb hdd's to set them in raid 0 array. I never had raid array on any pc before. So i googled for some instructions. All seem to say that a floppy disk and drive is indispensible?
Does that mean that one cannot set raid 0 without floppy?
Also (excuse my n00bness here), where i'm getting the laptop from lists these options:
No raid +0, 00eur
Raid 0 +0, 00eur
Raid 1 +0, 00eur
Raid 5 +0, 00eur
Which means i can choose the array. And i selected raid 0. Does that mean that the raid setup will be ready up and running from the supplier and that i don't need to do anything? (I'm going to install the os myself).

Failed Hard Drive Setting Up As Secondary
I have a failed hard drive that i'd like to set up as a secondary drive to try and get anything off of it that i can. I have a new hard drive that is setup with windows and functions properly. However, when i reconnect the old hard drive, the system keeps trying to boot off of that one even though the new hard drive is in the primary position. Both drives are sata. I have checked in the bios and bios sees all the information about the first, and can read the type of drive off the second, but not the volume capacity. The drive is clicking and beeping when i boot. I have tried the seagate diagnostics, knoppix, and spinrite but nothing is working
Am i totally screwed or is there another way i can get it going to be able to see the drive?

Setting Up A Wd 640 Gig Hard Drive
I have been using 1 80 gig sata drive forever. I used it in a budget build for someone and ordered a wd 640 gig blue. This will be my only drive and i was wondering what the best way to set it up would be. I will be using vista 64 bit. I have been reading and have seen a few different suggestions. A 30 to 40 gig partiton for windows, a 100 to 200 gig partition for windows and no partitions. What would be the best option for the fastest windows?

External Hdd Do Not Get An Assigned Drive Letter
I've got a sql server that uses an external hdd to do backup/transaction logs. The drive specifically has to be the "i" drive in order for the scripts to run. All was working fine untill i replaced the 5 external drives with new ones. Same size, same brand, different enclosure. Now whenever i plug the drives in, they do not get an assigned drive letter. The only way the server will see them is if i go into "manage your computer" and then assign the drive the proper letter.

Using Laptop Hard Drive As External Hdd
Can i use a hitachi hard drive from my old laptop, in a external hard drive? So i recently took apart my old compaq laptop and took out the hard drive, cd drive, speakers, etc. I broke my old external hard drive and was able to swap the hard drive with another external hard drive, and it works. But can i use my old computer hard drive on my old external hard drive. Answer:-
Yes, you always can turn a internal hard drive to be an external like everybody else here is describing it to you just buy a small shell case if is a laptop hard drive, and as suggestion i do not know how much stuff do you store but if you are going to build it why not use a bigger capacity hard drive, my sources to buy them will be: circuitcity.com, ebay.com and microcenter.com. Do your search for external hard drive shell/case.googd luck with it.

Can't See Hdd When Booting From Usb Flash Drive
I just got a usb pen drive which i planned to use as a boot device (replace floppy). I set it up and i can boot into dos with cd drivers, but when i fdisk, i can't see my hdd. This is a problem when trying to load an os, the bios is set to boot to the flash drive first, then the floppy, and finally the hdd. Any suggestions would be cool.

Turn External Hdd To Internal Hard Drive
I have an external hard drive that the case was damaged years back. To be specific, wd my book essential (wd2500c032). I can get it to still work via usb but it is so flaky. Anytime i move my desk or pc it disconnects. I am looking to install it into my dell dimension e510. I noticed there was an extra slot but the info cable does not support the same connect. (My hard drive uses the long skinny connector and the wire inside is a short one. )
Well i got the bright idea to remove a non working dvd drive and place it in it's bay. It uses the same type of data and power wires. Now everything boots up fine but my pc isn't recognizing it. I didn't know if i had to hunt down a new driver or if what i did was points. I am good on pcs but when it gets to hardware, i don't have more experience than simple parts upgrade installs. Any suggestions besides buying a new hard drive?

Xp Tablet 2005, Old Ide Hard Drive, Not Recognizing Hdd
Trying to do a fresh install for someone on his gateway tablet (cx2610). Once the xp setup disc loads, it says it can't find any hard drives to install to. The laptop boots find to the hard drive and loads windows, and the bios detects it too. Do i need to install additional drivers? How can i do it without a floppy drive? Slipstream them into the os disc? Nlite? Never done it before, and i don't know what drivers i need.

Hdd Upgrade - Sata Vs Ide, Drive Rpm Speeds
I have a sort of old computer with an asus a7n8x motherboard, and it has 2x ide connectors, ultra dma 133/100/66/33. It seems like all the modern hard drives these days are sata standard. So how is sata better than ide? I don't know much about it. I browsed through some available ide hd's, and they seem to be the same in everything as the sata drives. You can get a 7200 rpm ide drive, just as you can for sata. So, apparently ide can handle data transmission just fine, right? So why did manufacturers make the switch?
Further, is there good reason for me to switch? I see that there are sata controller cards. So i could just pop one of those into my pci slot and start using sata drives even with my ide-equipped motherboard.correct? Should i do this? The only problem with ide is it looks like the hd selection isn't nearly as good. I didn't even see any 1tb drives with ide on newegg. The biggest one was 500gb. What's up with that? Is it because hd companies made the switch to sata and didn't bother developing larger ide drives past a certain point?
Finally, how big of a deal is the rpm speed on drives? Back when i built my computer i think they were all 5400rpm. Now many are 7200 rpm. What's the impact on system performance?

2.5" Usb 2.0 External Hdd Hard Drive Enclosure Problem
I have this generic 2. 5" usb 2. 0 external hdd hard drive enclosure and a 2. 5" wd ide hard drive. Recently, my brother was transporting some files downstairs and dropped it all the way down the stairs. After we plugged it back in, it came up and all, but it was very slow. So, i just left it. Now, (a couple of days later) i plugged it into the computer and the led on the enclosure come up and all, but windows will not install the drive. When it tries to install it, it just "fails". The enclosure always had this problem when plugging it into a front usb port and occasionally the back one. But, after a few tries on the back usb, it would work. Now, it just wont work at all. Another thing i noticed is that when the hard drive tries to rev up (spin) it stops and clicks, then starts again. This made me think the hdd was gone. Yet, i undid all the screws on the hard drive and (unsuccessfully) tried to open it. I then put the hdd in the enclosure and it still would not install, but the hard drive didnt make the clicking. It spun like normal (then slowed down when it didnt install). Finally, i put the screws back on and the clicking has returned. Any ideas whats dead/how to fix?

Setting Up My Logitech G5
I'm relatively new to the whole on-the-fly changing dpi and i'm trying to get optimal settings. In the setpoint software, i set the mouse acceleration to low and at as little as 750 dpi, my mouse feels fast enough in games and windows. If thats the case, what is the use of having a mouse capable of 2000 dpi? I've tried 2000 and its way way to touchy. What settings can i change or maybe could you suggest to me what your settings are?

Setting Up Triple Monitors
I have a gtx260 with 2 dvi output and my motherboard also has additional on-board video with dvi and vga output. Would it be possible to set up a triple monitor setup with could span a the desktop across all three monitors? Setting Up A Two Computer Network
Easy i know. But ive had no experience in networks (well only a little). I have two computers connected via ethernet (both using nvidia network controller). I just cant seem to set it up. I ran the network setup wizard on pc1 - selected "this computer connects directly to the internet. " Gave it a name and description - kept the default "mshome" group name, turned on file and printer sharing. Once it finished, right clicked on my network connection (local area connection) - properties - selected properties of tcp/ip and changed ip to 192. 168. 0. 1 (subnet mask 255. 255. 255. 0). Right clicked on all my drivers and enabled sharing. Did exacaly the same on pc2 - apart from selecting "this computer connects through internet through another computer" and putting the ip address to 192. 168. 0. 2. When going in to my network places - clicked on "entire network" took about 30 secs then the "mshome" came up, clicked on that after about another 40 sec pause got "mshome is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource. "
Is there something im doing wrong, can some one give me a quick guide to simply setting up two pcs ?

Setting Wireless Up Via Ntl
Im helping a friend out setting his wireless up via ntl. I don't have a lot of knowledge of wireless so i thought i would ask some fellow pro's. So he bought a wireless router and pci wireless card and he wants to know how to do it. He can install it via software but can he simply connect the router to the ntl box and then install the pci wireless card and then have web access that easy?
Its only one pc but his pc is upstairs and parents want no cables running through the house, got to love parents. But no i do understand all the health hazards etc. Phone & ntl box downstairs, pc upstairs in his room.

Setting Up 2 Monitor Display
I have two monitors and i'd like to set up a dual display. My computer has two ports: vga and dvi-d. When i hook up the 2 monitors they both work, its just that they display the same image. I'd like them to have an extended image. When i go into display -> settings i see the following: display (multiple monitors) on radeon 9200. It doesn't allow me to chnage anything. Do i need to purchase another video card?

What Is The Point Of Dpi Setting On Mouse ?
Why would i ever use anything lower than its maximum? I'm using a razer copperhead and i have the option to lower its resolution. Is there any reason i would ever do this other than trying to duplicate the feel of a previous mouse?
With any mouse you start to get negative acceleration when you move faster than it can differentiate, why then would i ever want this? To achieve the same rate of movement across my screen at different resolutions i must adjust my sensitivity correct?Just confused at all this marketing information.

Setting Max Memory For Games
I have many gigs of ram (8 of the high speed stuff) in my pc. The problem i'm having is that the game arma 2 won't load textures properly with more than 2 gigs. The game runs great when i take 3 sticks out and run the game like that. Instead of doing that i would like to know how to set max mem for the game at 2048 mb. I tried a relentless internet search on how to do it and all i found was what to do. If anyone can direct me to a site that explains how to do it or just explain shortly on this post it would be greatly appreciated.

Under Speed Setting For Dvd-rw Drives
I seem to have a problem wiv my dvd-rw drives' writing capabilities. Both of the drives are 16x , and 48x on cd's. But i am only get a maximum value of 40x within nero, and it doesnt seem to go higher. Its also saying my driver can only do 4x on 8x media, and ripping dvd's at 4x
I'm thinking i need some help, otherwise i could have bought used, slower drives and got the same performance.

Ddr2 Memory Bios Setting
I need help setting with my ddr2 memory setting in my bios. Here is part of my computer setup:
Amd athlon x2 5400+ am2 cpu
Ecs a780gm-a motherboard
Geil evo one 2 gb ddr2 800 4-4-4-12 1. 9v-2. 0v
The problem i have is there are so many options for the memory in the bios i don't know what to set on auto and what to change manually. Here are the options i have for the memory in the bios:
Dram frequency: auto
Memclock value: 200 mhz
Dram timing mode: auto
Cas latency (cl): auto
Trcd: auto
Trp: auto
Trtp: auto
Tras: auto
Trc: auto
Share memory auto detection: enabled
Surround view: disabled
Hdmi audio: enabled
I guess my question is where do i put in the 4-4-4-12, is the memclock value correct, should i leave everything else on auto, and does the voltage need to be bumped up to 1. 9v or 2. 0v. Right now the voltage is 1. 8, something volts.
