Spdif Optical - No More Fixed Volume ?

In the past, the volume has always been fixed (meaning that adjusting the software volume in windows does nothing). I use the volume control on my headphone amp. I just noticed that now the windows 7 software volume control is no longer fixed. It is adjusting my volume! What is going on here? I thought spdif optical out was always fixed volume. I don't want software messing with my signal. Yeah yeah, i can leave it at 100%, but some apps adjust the volume (like online flash movies, etc. ). Anyone know whats up?

Using optical spdif and 3. 5mm at same time. Is it possible? I'm running w7 and i always have to set one as default to get windows to output to it. It will put one as a communications device, but really, i want to have some applications (like vlc) output to spdif to my receiver which is showing the video on my tv. And i want the 3. 5mm to output from windows and everything else to my pc speakers. I can not figure it out.

Optical Out Volume Control
I just installed an ht omega striker sound card and have it attached optical out to my home theater system. Windows volume no longer affects the volume level of my sound system. If i turn it all the way up or down, the level is the same. Have i forfeited my ability to control volume with the mce remote, or am i missing something simple? I've looked elsewhere for an answer to this, but have had no luck.

Error 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0
It is hard for me to throw away things that have been working. I am the owner of two dell inspiron notebooks. One is an 1100 (2003) and the one that is currently giving me the problem is a 2500 (2002). So you can see who you are dealing with. I upgraded the memory on both machines to 1g and 512mb respectively, not that long ago and they were working fine. Then i got this brainstorm to try to teach myself ubuntu and wiped out xp on the 2500 and burned an iso image of a ubuntu version and it was working ok except i couldn't connect to the internet even via ethernet cable. Time passed and then by the time i came back to it - there was a problem that i really can't recall - i posted on some other sites and the bottom line was, i thought i needed a new hard drive. So i purchased a compatible drive (i did a fair amount of research) and got the drive about 2 months ago and just tried to get it going this morning. I replaced my hitachi 20 gb drive with a seagate momemtus 5400. 3 40gb drive. When i boot up, the initial screen does show that it recognizes my new drive (model st940815a).

Getting Ati To Support Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling
The issue: users with wide-screen monitors (like my dell 30" @ 2560x1600), and games that don't support wide-screen/can't be hacked to run in non-stretch wide-screen. Would like to run their games as large as possible, ideally filling the monitor vertically, and with black bars on the sides, as opposed to stretching the 4:3 image to fit horizontally as well. Catalyst drivers have only the option for "centered timings", which will run your application in the proper aspect ratio, in a centered box, with black bars on the sides and top and bottom. The problem, if you're playing something @ 1024x768, you'll get a very small viewing box of the game, with massive black areas all around it. The only other option is to scale the image to fit the screen, but that stretches it, which is a big no-no, as it distorts the images. Catalys mobility drivers, as well as nvidia's drivers have functionality for a better solution included included. It's a third panel option of "fixed aspect ratio scaling", where the image is scaled up to fit the monitor vertically, but the ratio (4:3) is maintained, so the image is not stretched, and there are black bars on the sides (but not the top and bottom!). My desktop has the regular 7. 1 channel output plus one spdif output. I have connected my 2. 1 speakers to the regular 3. 5mm jack. Is there anyway, to connect the same speakers to the spdif jack? I did find images of spdif to 3. 5mm converters on google. After converting, does the signal remain digital or goes back to analog?

Interference On Platinum Fatality X Fi Spdif Output
I have no other input equipment sources like tv or radio but i definitely am hearing live broadcasts but i don't know if it's from a tv, video or radio? If i have the sound properties of the creative sb x fi set as the default device speakers and the spdif out as the default communication device i do not get interference. But if i have the spdif out also set as the default device as well as the default communication device i get the interference in the windows 7x 64-bit configuration.could it be that codec pack i am using? It is the shark 007.net 64-bit codec. I decided to use that codec because when i tried it, it was the only one that allowed dolby digital output with the creative sound blaster and not just prologic. I'm using a akg hearo 999 audio sphere v2 external digital decoder with wireless headphones capabilities and i know it's not the source of the problem as it works perfectly fine on my realtek high-definition audio coming out of my laptop and the same speaker/headphones and amp setup. I've also swap the optical cables around in the setup and that doesn't make any difference. I've even tried coaxial output from the same platinum fatality x fi front facing output connectors as the spdif and i still get the massive interference so i'm clueless how i'm picking it up. I have only had the x fi working dolby digital output for 48 hours and it worked perfectly on the first day but after trying it the day after the above problem manifested itself. Chkdsk Volume Is Dirty
Since last night (because of improper shut down), everytime i get onto the computer it runs the chkdsk. While it does it says. "Checking file system on c: the type of the file system is ntfs the volume is dirty". It also says a bunch of other things but most of which disappears before i can read it. Once i am on i get an error message stating. "The file or directory c: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility". Ok, so i click onto start and then onto run and type in chkdsk c: /f to run chkdsk and fix any system errors. It runs. I get a prompt that says something about the disk being locked and asks if i want to run the chkdsk the next time i restart.
I say yes and restart my pc. Again the pc runs the chkdsk and again it says. "Checking file system on c: the type of the file system is ntfs the volume is dirty". And once i am on i still get the same error message. "The file or directory c: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility". I also ran chkdsk c: /r which took longer as it was a 5 step process. It did not help either. I ran adaware, disk clean-up, defrag. Nothing helps. I search the help section and found an article regarding detecting and repairing disk errors. It told me to open my computer, click properties, under error checking click check now. Then select scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. I did all this, went through the whole process and it did not help either.
I do not know what else to do. I have googled for info and followed as much as i could. The only thing i have read about and did not try is the recovery thing. I don't know how to and do not feel safe fiddling without some sort of guidance. Can you help? If you can, please remember to talk in itty bitty steps as i am like a kindergartner when it comes to this. All of the items i did up until this point were tips that i found on the microsoft website and other sites.

I have already tried doing a windows format to try and correct the problem. However, this did not work. The drive was previously ext3 so perhaps it needs a low level format (writing 0's) to fix this. Dynamic Volume Creation
Ok. I'll try to be as clear as possible with this one. Dell optiplex 740 (athlon xp 5600+, 80gb c: drive, 2x 40gb (to be raid 0), dvd burner) would anyone know how to make my desktop computer think it's a desktop (not a laptop) and allow me to setup dynamic disks?
The os is installed using a corporate windows xp image, not the corporate xp cd. I am trying to setup an office file share to speed up the deployment of our xp image to new pc's in the office (our primary server for this is offsite and rather slow copying the 4gb image each time). I setup the new computer, and attempted to setup the 2x 40gbs into a dynamic raid 0 set. Our image seems to have been mastered on a laptop, since there is no option to convert a drive to dynamic. I have ruled out hardware, as i swapped the c: drive and installed windows via a regular dell xp disc. I converted the drives to dynamic with no issue. I swapped the c: back to our image xp, and now the only option given is to convert the disks back to basic disks. I cannot allow a regular xp computer on our network for security reasons, as the image contains security patches and anti virus, otherwise i would just do that. The optiplex 740 does not have hardware raid, and buying a card is not an option for our office.

Backlit Keyboard With Volume Knob
I really need a backlit keyboard and yet i also want an integrated volume knob. I am sick of pushing buttons for controlling volume. I need a knob! I've been looking at a lot of backlit keyboards but i can't find one with a volume knob. The saitek ones all have a knob, but that's only for controlling the leds! Any ideas guys? The logisys kb208bk seems to have a volume knob but all the reviews on newegg give it 1/5 eggs! It seems there are no xp drivers? What the heck? Would nt drivers work?

Low Volume When Hooked To Two Computers
I have a pc and a brand new mac mini (oct 2009 model). The speakers i am using are logitech z-2300 2. 1. My setup is as follows:
I have 3. 5mm male-to-male cables going from both the pc soundcard and the mac mini audio-out to a y cable with two 3. 5mm female ends and one 3. 5mm male end. The 3. 5mm male end goes to a 3. 5mm female/female connector. The other end of this connector has the 3. 5mm male jack from my speakers hooked to it. With this setup and my old mac mini it allowed me to have audio from both my pc and mac go to one set of 2. 1 speaker system. I could play audio from both sources and the volume was normal. It worked great. However, with this new mac whenever the 3. 5mm jack is hooked into the mac, the audio coming from my pc is extremely low volume. As soon as i unplug the 3. 5mm cable from the mac, the audio coming from my pc returns to a normal volume level. I have no idea why this changed when the only different element in the setup was the new mac mini. How should i go about solving this problem? Should i be using a different setup? Is there a way to boost the volume? I'm pretty clueless about audio, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Just yesterday i had a powercut where i live but the ups system took over and did a force shutdown. Unfortunately i think the force shutdown damaged my c: and i keep getting a reoccurring volume bitmap error. I have read up about this but i can't seem to fix it. My harddrive is a 160gb seagate. I did reformat c: and reinstalled windows today but to no avail, the error still occurs. I have run chkdsk at startup to repair the problem, but when windows loads and i run a chkdsk scan on c: in read-only mode the error keeps on coming up. It did say it had something to do with the mft, how would i fix this?
I have partition magic 8. 0 and that isnt reporting any problems with any of the partitions. This problem needs to be fixed because after sometime the pc randomly becomes unstable and i cannot access its resources or anything without hard resetting it.

I am trying to configure a stripped volume using windows vista. The hardware is configured as jbod, and disk array driver is configured as all pass-thru. All of my available disks are visible in vista’s disk management tool. I created a stripped volume using all the disks. The performance is phenomenal. My read performance can reach up to 600mb/s. However, there is one problem. The stripped volume goes offline every time i reboot the system. Then i have to reconfigure everything and do a quick format etc. Any suggestions? Is this a driver issue or a os issue?

Answer:- the tv remote should affect the volume if you connect your laptop properly to the tv. This should not affect your laptop sound after you disconnect from the tv.

Chkdsk Unknown Error Raid Volume
@ raid 6 volume on areca 1222 controller: i have some files and directories i can't delete, move because they are corrupted. I asked windows to perform a full check on this storage volume but it always ends with "unknown error" after having supposedly found and deleted some orphan files. What are my options? I have an ass load of large files on this array and no extra space to move and rebuild. Side note:- i know everyone can have different experiences but i will not forgive seagate for the 1. 5 tb hdds fiasco. Cursed be the day i decided to go with these drives for my array. I've had 4 of them spaz-out or die on me with different controllers, pcs.

Volume My Computer Isn't Working
I unplugged my computer. Now that everything is plugged back in, the speakers won't work. The volume is shown on and up on the task-bar. Someone had mentioned going to accessories > entertainment. But i don't see entertainment. I have no idea what could be wrong.

Volume Mixer Won't Open
At the bottom right of the computer screen is the the speaker icon. It remains with a small red x on the speaker icon if your speakers are muted or not plugged in. My speakers work fine with any other devise such as a mp3 but not with my computer. I click the mixer and nothing happens. But get this, when i right click the volume icon and chose "open volume mixer" the volume control pops up but with no bars to adjust the volume levels. In the top left of the bar it says "no audio devise installed". I went to control panel, then hardware & sound, then sound, and found under playback tab i found "realtek high definition audio" with a green small check on the icon next to it. I know i have the right playback device selected because realtek is the only one there and it is what my computer uses. Do i need to re download realtek? I really have no idea whats goeing on with my computer and its depressing i cant hear my friends or my music over the internet because my computers volume thingy is messed up :(.

Saitek Ku 0503 Keyboard Volume Controls Do Not Work
On model number ku-0503 keyboard by saitek the volume controls do not work. I went to their site used the instructions on how to fix it however they did not work. I emailed the company 2 days ago but have received no response.

I'm having a hard time finding a keyboard that meets the following criteria:-
- Volume control buttons, including mute
- Headphone socket
- Very quiet
- Not much more than 60 bucks
Also backlight keys would be a plus, but as i'm having a hard time finding those four, i won't be picky.

Windows Boot Error - Unmountable Boot Volume
I have had my new system up and running for about 5 weeks now with now problems. So today i was on my computer and all of a sudden it freezes. Nothing is responding so i just reset the power. Once i reset the power i get to the logon screen, i logon and then i get a blue screen saying windows has detected a problem and has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer the under it, it says, unmountable_boot_volume. So i thought my grphix card might have overheated so i try rebooting again about several times with no luck. I try booting with safe mode but still freezes. After about 2 hrs i come back and nothing has changed. Any 1 know any solutions?

5.1 Receiver With Optical
I have a m2n-sli deluxe mobo with an optical output connected to a sony receiver. Aside from the that connection there is only a coax and 3 rca connectors on the back. From what i have been reading there is no way to allow 5. 1 from my pc because pc optical only carries 2 channels. Is this true? Is there any thing i can do short of buying a new sound card to allow me to play games in 5. 1 with my current receiver?

Asio And Optical
So i've been trying to use asio4all, i had it working fine when i used a typical setup. Now i'm using optical out into a onkyo receiver. I cannot for the life of me get it to work. It plays no audio at all, and on my onkyo the dts light will flash on and off every ~10 seconds.

Optical Out On X-fi Plat
I recently received my behringer ms20s, and purchased one of these to hook them up:

I enabled digital i/o in the creative console, but i'm not getting any sound out of the speakers, or any light from the end of the cable going to the speakers. I tried switching to spdif in playback devices (vista), but no luck there either. Was i mistaken in thinking the flexijack on the x-fi supported optical out? I really don't want to connect this to the front of the x-fi drive in the front of my case. It'd mean leaving my door open all the time.

So i have the two spdif pins on the mobo. How do i turn that into an optical signal for my hdtv? The only hd audio input i have for when im using hdmi, is the optical port. (For when hdmi is only carrying the video) i saw a guy on youtube that made his own with an led, and some wire, is that all there is to it?

Do You Know What Will Replace Optical Media?
I want to ask how people are backing up their discs, or media make a double. Are you including the cd key into the iso on that single back up? What about the safest form of keeping the information from becoming corrupted. How about just keeping them on the hard drive. Perhaps your different and prefer the disc to be extracted into a folder for future use of not having to locate discs.

Optical Drive Question
I just did a build for a customer. They wanted windows xp so they got xp. Everything installed beautifully except i've noticed one oddity. When i go to my computer, the optical drive is listed as a dvd-ram drive. I haven't finished installing all of the software so i have yet to test its burning capabilities, but i found this to be quite odd. Any ideas?
