Serial / Com Port Device Managing

Ok i have an old old ibm thinkpad laptop that has one physical serial port. I have a program that uses the serial port but the program says it is in use. Now in device manager under com ports in the adavanced port settings there is a list of com port numbers listing 1 through 256. This is where i get lost. If i have one physical serial port then why is there a list of 256? Can i share this one port with whatever is using it currently and how? I just want to disable whatever is using this com1 port and use it just for this program. But if i cant then i need to share it somehow. Ive messed with the list of com ports changing them to higher numbers but when i go to chose that particular com port in the program it says that one is in use.

Any Way To Use Serial Port In Safe Mode ?

I have an older ibm (thinkpad 500?) Using windows 2000 that crashes randomly. I only use this computer to run an automatic key machine in my truck that uses the serial com port. The computer runs fine in safe mode, but i can't link it to the key machine because the serial port is disabled in safe mode. Is there any way to enable the serial com port in safe mode?

Serial Port Usb Conversion

I have a microsoft sidewinder ffb pro joystick but it is the older serial port version, it way seem a little pointless to do this but is there such a thing as a serial to usb converter? If so how much are they and will i need to download any later drivers to support the joystick under this port?

Serial Port Communication Issue

I have two identical mb's both using xp pro w/sp2
They are the foxconn n570sm2aa. With two different serial devices (a fta receiver and a rf signal level meter) i have to first disable the serial port, then re-enable it to be able to communicate with either device. If i don't, i get a error message. My previous mb had a nforce2 chipset and used 2k. I had no issue with two different fta receivers using the serial port. With another piece of test equipment, there is a different problem. The software locks up after 5 seconds after hitting the 'start' button to try to connect with the device (after the s/w is opened). I believe this is aseparate issue since the disable/enable doesn't help. (There was no issue with the previous mb and o/s. )

Any ideas about why i have to disable, then re-enable the port everytime?
Btw; no conflicts in dm and it is the stock windows driver that is loaded.

How To Install Pci Serial Port Card ?

My pci serial port cards were fried by a lightening strike.couldn't buy the same combo (1 x 3 port card and 1 x 1 port card) so i installed two 2nd hand cards - 1 x 2 port card and 1 x 1 card and decided to used the onboard serial port to make up for the other lost port. Windows 2k detected the cards and tried to install them.couldn't find any drivers on the c drive or installation disk. Dial up is a total nightmare for this machine. I can't find any detailed tutorials or step by step info on how to install a pci serial port card. Do you need to obtain and install drivers (can't seem to located them as negligable info on card itself) or aren't they needed and instead you cancel any automatic attempt to install new device and just go to another area of the computer and configure that?

Connect Computer To Tv Through Serial Port A/v Cable

How will be the performance if we connect computer to tv through serial port a/v cable?

Answer:-

Probably pretty bad. Both rs-232 and composite video are antiquated and considered legacy standards for computers. You don't say exactly what you're doing, but try to avoid using those deprecated connections if possible.

Moving Device To Different Usb Port

Is anyone else having this problem? I have 6 usb 2. 0 ports and a 4x hub plugged into one of them, and if move any device from one usb port to another, windows thinks i'm plugging in a new device, and needs to go through the whole process of installing both the drivers and the software (in correct order yada yada) each time this is done. I have 4 cables plugged into the 4 main usb ports, and everytime i unplug them all to open the case, i never know which ones went in which one so i whack them all back in, boot up, and have to go through settings them all up again!

Error: Unable To Enumerate Usb Device On Port 6

I recently bought two ps/2 to usb converter adaptors from ebay, and they're not working with our keyboard (logitech access keyboard), mouse (old logitech ball mouse with only two buttons), or the laptop (toshiba with 512mb ram, about 2ghz speed, two usb ports). The laptop is running windows xp pro. We've tried scanning for new hardware, and we tried booting the computer with both plugged in. Neither responds at all. The only signs of life are the num lock and function lock lights on the keyboard (they toggle like they're supposed to. But the caps lock and scroll lock do not). Any ideas to get these working?

I've also tried them with my 3 year old acer laptop (1gb ram, about 2ghz cpu, more than enough usb ports). This one's running ubuntu 9. 04. Similar (non)results. But with the keyboard plugged in, if i mash the keys, every so often xp will give a error message (printed to the first virtual terminal) like this:

[33237. 360137] hub 1-0:1. 0: unable to enumerate usb device on port 6

The digits in the square brackets change every time. And sometimes it says this:-

[Numbers. Numbers] hub 1-0:1. 0: connect-debounce failed, port 6 disabled

But i really only bought these to work with the windows xp laptop.

Usb Ports Problem - Device Must Be Hooked Up To Correct Port

Whenever i need to open my case up, i have to unplug everything, including my usb ports. When i replug them back in, i have to make sure each item was in the same place it was before or else it won't function properly upon boot up. For example, my airlink wireless 802. 11b usb adapter won't work unless it is plugged in to the bottom left usb port (out of 4 ports total). If i try to boot up with it in any other port, i get no internet and will have to reinstall the drivers. At least the ps2 ports for keyboard/mouse are color-coded so i know which goes where, usb are not and this makes it all the more difficult when i unplug stuff. I am using win xp sp2, has anyone experienced this?

Device Can Perform Faster If Connected To Hi Speed Usb 2.0 Port

Every day, a bubble that says the following pops up "this device can perform faster. This usb device can perform faster if you connect it to a hi-speed usb 2. 0 port. For a list of available ports, click here. " It pops up even when there are no usbs in my computer. It happens close to 50 times a day and is bugging me. If i click on it there is a check box that says "notify if device can perform faster" and i uncheck it and click close and then a few seconds later it pops up again. It is very annoying because every time it pops up it makes this "boop boop" noise and when i try to listen to music or watch a video the sounds disrupts it. I have an hp pavillion dx6000 laptop running windows vista. Please, if anyone knows how to solve this, let me know.

Usb Device Has Exceeded The Power Limits Of Its Hub Port

Okay! So, i never had a problem with this before but now i do! I got a new camera and everytime i plug it in to the usb port to download my pictures to my computer, it takes a couple tries before the program opens! And i had some stuff on my old camera that i wanted to put on, and everytime i plug it into the usb port i get this message!

"A usb device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port" what exactly does that mean? And then it tells me to unplug everything and press reset! I do, but it still does the same thing! It worked fine before so i don't know what's wrong! The camera is an olympus and my new one is a kodak! I did accidentally plug the kodak cable into the olympus, because they look the same! And it kind of fit actually! It might have caused some damage, but i don't know if that has anything to do with it or not! I even tried unplugging everything, and plugging it back in! Should i get a new usb port, or is there a different problem! Because i don't wanna waist any money if this is a simple problem that can be fixed!

Usb Message: Hi-speed Device Plugged Into A Not Hi-speed Port

I'm rebuilding my system, and have two pci cards with firewire and usb ports. I remember before the rebuild i plugged them in and they worked. That was nice. Now, i installed them one at a time. The first one prompted no notifications, but when i plugged a device into it it warned me that it was a hi-speed device plugged into a not hi-speed port. I installed the second one, and it prompted the new hardware wizard, asking for drivers, but said it couldn't find them although i had dsl connected. The cards did not come with any disks and there was no problem getting them to work before.

Garmin Usb Serial Driver

I bought a usb to serial adapter so that i can plug in my garmin forerunner 201 (only has a serial connector) to my new computer (doesn't have a serial port). So i bought this kind of nondescript adapter online, and it arrived without any drivers. I thought all usb-to-serial drivers would be the same - but apparently not! I googled for drivers, found 1, 001 different drivers available, and the 2 or 3 that i downloaded did not work. How do i go about finding the right driver?

Loopback Test For Serial Ports

Does anyone have, or know where i can find schematic/pinout + software source code (any language) to go with it for the loopback test for the serial ports?

As i understand it, there are several ways to do loopback plug for serial port test, and therefore software must be specific. I found a lot of pinouts for loopback plugs for various existing commercial diagnostics software tools, but i couldn't find any free software that do these tests. And i was sure i saw basic source years ago, but now when i need it i can't find anything

Serial Connection On Server A Catastrophe Risk ?

I have a time-clock that communicates to the host computer via serial connection. I was told by the vendor that it is not recommended to have the serial connection connected to our server. He mentioned such things as lightening, and the card being connected directly through to the motherboard, not a serious concern but an added risk and vulnerability to the server. How correct is this assumption? Is this dangerous in any way?

Installing With A Serial Ata Hard Drive

A friend recommended i buy a sata hd with my new computer. Now i can't get my operating system floppies and cd to recognize it. In my bios it says my primary master and primary slave ides are blank. My secondary master is my cdrom and my secondary slave is my zip drive. The 120gb sata drive is at third master. It recognizes it in bios as a hard drive when i did a hd detection. I am trying to install like this: i have a win98 boot floppy that i put in first. I run fdisk to create a dos partition and then put in a win98 cd and install win98. After win98 is installed, i put in my win2000 upgrade cd and upgrade the os to win2000. So it seems like it's not creating a dos partition on the right drive but when i ran format c:, it formatted a 120gb hd. And i have no idea what other drive it would be creating a dos partition on. But when i put the win98 cd in the drive and run setup.exe, it says i need at least 735909909 bytes of space to install windows.

Ide (ultra Ata) To Serial Ata Adapter - How Will It Work?

I just bought a brand new 120 gb 7200rpm samsung sata hard drive to replace my 80gb maxtor 5400rpm ata hard drive because it was acting up and i decided to get a new one. Anyways, i just got it in the mail and to my dissapointment i have ide connections and a ata interface/motherboard. I looked online to find an adapter and i did find a few but dont know which one/kind to get. I dont want to buy a new motherboard or a 80$ sata card or anything. I have ultra ata and want to connect my serial ata hardrive to it. But these adapters im looking at i think work for serial ata motherboards to hook to ultra ata hardrives. Or can it work the other way around? I think i got the jist of it and can hook it up if i did get one. Can i use my ide cable to hook onto the 40 pin adapter slot then the other end into my motherboard or does it have to go somewhere else. Im just a little confused thats all from a picture i saw on a website that hooked one up. Can anyone help me here?

My power supply went bust for my e-machines, i replace the 250w with a 500w supply. Everything came up fine excepting my sound. If i go to control panel -> sounds -> i see "no audio device" and audio default device is set to "modem #0 line playback". I did googling and did a system restore, but that did not help. I cannot play any sound files, it says no audio device installed. Did i miss any sound card connections.
