Catalyst 6.9 - Computer Freeze / Lockup

I still cannot get this thing stable. Once i install win64 and load mobo drivers it is fine. But when i load the video drivers or catalyst 6. 9 my computer will freeze/lockup and then will reboot itself. Sometimes i have to push the reset button cause it will freeze after it reboots. But if i remove the drivers or catalyst it works fine. I called ati and powercolor they say mobo not working right. But when i call dfi they say video card. But then i was told to run memtest. I ran memtest last night with 2x512 samsung cas 2. 5 3200 and right away i had errors then i tried my 2x512 kingston cas 3 3200 ran that all night this morning the screen was flashing white. Does that mean it passed or failed? Then i tried the test again . After 1:12 seconds an error occurred. Tried it again just found out alot of errors. Do you guys think its the memory that is messing me up or the mobo or video?

Vista Lockup / Freeze

Well i got another issue this time its with vista it basically freezes i cant move the mouse hdd led shows no activity nothing responds even if i leave it for a while nothing i have to reset it or power it down through the power button. Im currently doing a memory test to see if its the ram but i tested the ram before and it was fine. The issue started happening about 2 weeks ago before that everything was stable no bsods nothing i havent flashed my mobo bios as it was running fine, i thought it might of been the ati drivers 9. 5 because the issue started around the date they were released when i reformatted i used 9. 5 and the issue came up early in the install(so i thought it must be the driver as thats the only new driver i used and i had no other applications etc installed) then i reformatted again with 9. 4 it stopped freezing for a good while until after sp2 was installed the freezing started happening again. Heres the strange bit i noticed it happens when i open certain apps utorrent or the steam server browser thats when it 8 times out of 10 happens i have no clue what it is. My guess is its my memory or harddisk but i think its possibly the video card because whenever the issue occured after restarting the pc in the login screen my monitor wont display anything i know its the log in screen because i hear the sound effect and if i type my pw i can see the g15 apps load on the g15 keyboard screen (i resolved this using vga instead of dvi but it shouldn't happen in the first place). Ohh yeah everything is running at stock speeds.

Troubleshooting Pc Freeze - Lockup Occurs Randomly

I'm having problems with system stability. I've tried what would seem like everything, yet i can't even narrow down the possibilities of why my system locks up. Lockups occur somewhat randomly, varying in time since booting. Lockups are sometimes caused while playing music, either through media player or winamp. Sometimes network activity such as copying files from one machine to another causes a lockup. Sometimes i would leave the pc idle and come back to find its frozen. One sure program to lock up is stronghold. The game is patched but it always freezes without fail. - I've updated all drivers. - I've updated all software. - I've torture tested the pc with prime95 and it was still going after 29hrs. - I've tried exchanging the video card and the problem remains. - I've tried a fresh format and install of windows and the problems remains. What can i do now?

Computer specifications:

Athlonxp 3200+
1gb kingston hyper x ddr 400
Msi kt6 delta
Geforce 4 mmx440
Windows xp pro sp2

Computer Will Freeze Up

So i just recently built my new computer and i have this weird issue. It doesn't happen all the time, but every once in a while the computer will freeze up, the monitors will refresh, and then the background will be black and my mouse will move extremely slow. Every time i have to reboot before everything will be fine. My boot time is about 45 seconds to a minute. Is that average? Os running win 7 64 bit

Total System Lockup

I built a pc around 6 months ago. It has a good spec (amd athlon xp 3200+, 1gb ram, antec lanboy case, and antec sl350pgb 350w psu) and the psu is brand new. Every since i got it i have been suffering from random lockups (i.e. In the middle of using windows, the pc will 100% lockup, no keyboard activity, no mouse activity, screen frozen, but power on the pc remains on). It is not a windows issue or a software issue (i also have linux on the pc, and it does the same). The lockups are totally random - sometimes i can go weeks without a lockup, other times i will have the pc on for a few hours and then suffer a lockup. Reboot it, and it will be fine for another 2 weeks, it's very very weird. I originally thought it must be overheating. But i literally have no more room for fans. The antec lanboy case has 2 huge fans (one at front and one at back), i have a suitable heatsink and fan, and my psu is a dual fan one! (Back and bottom). It could be overheating. But i don't know where else i could fit more fans!

My assumption is that ram could not cause a full lockup of mouse/keyboard etc. So i am (blindly) assuming that this has to be related to either the processor or the motherboard. My question is, which do you think is the most likely culprit? And have you ever experienced anything like this?

System Lockup Troubleshooting

This system worked great for about a day. Got it up and running, set up windows, got antivirus and anti-spyware software set up. Tested it out by installing some game demos and running them as high as they could go. Dawn of war, call of duty 4, crysis, and so on. While running a f2p mmo called sword of the new world at 1600x1200 with settings maxed, the game froze after maybe an hour of play. The screen locked up with some nasty distortion, and the pc became unresponsive. While playing the full version of battlefield 2142, the game runs fine on default settings for several hours. When details are cranked and resolution is set to 1600x1200, it locks up within minutes - sometimes before the loading is even finished. The game plays great until then, 30+ fps, no choppiness. During troubleshooting i found that one ram slot on the motherboard had gone bad, as well as one module of the ocz memory. We replaced the defective memory with a patriot module (same type as the first patriot), and placed everything in the working slots. Battlefield 2142 currently works on default settings, but continues to crash at high detail levels. Once, several seconds before the game crashed, the pc speaker gave off two beeps. Now while the game is running on default settings, the speaker occasionally beeps. (Twice in about 45-60 minutes) the game has not crashed yet. Any suggestions as to what's up? I'm hoping it's not a faulty motherboard. I can live with only 3 dimms working, as xp doesn't go higher than 3 gigs. However, if there is danger of more damage or the system keeps acting up, then an rma might be in order.

Computer Beep Then Freeze

My friends computer is acting weird. He says this happens on the net more than anything. He'll be surfing and then the computer gives out a single beep and then freezes. He has to shut it down and reboot and then its fine for awhile. But usually happens again in a hour or so. He's on dial-up if that makes a difference.could it be overheating? Some feedback would be appreciated. He says it happens mostly on the net but has happened during normal use.

Xoxide Mouse Cause Computer Freeze

My mouse wont work. Its that glowing one from xoxide, and every time i plug it in my computer freezes. Same thing with my backlit keyboard, the backlite function freezes anything. I know the products are ok because ive used them on my older hp computer. Im thinking it could be my motherboard, because it has some problems with onboard sensors already. Anyone know if i can fix it? Or is it completely non-motherboard related?

Dvd R / Rw Drive Cause Computer Freeze

I recently changed cases to the antec 900 since it had more fans and better cooling. I didn't change any hardware except for my power supply (500w to a 550w). I connect everything back up, and my dvd drive doesn't work. The symptoms are as follows. I can put a cd or a dvd in there, and it locks up my pc. It locks up everything but my mouse. I can move my mouse around, but cannot click anything. When i eject the cd or dvd, my computer unfreezes. I do not have to reboot. While the cd or dvd is in there, i can do nothing, but once i eject it, everything else is fine again. I know it is not the ide cables, as it does this with 2 different cables. It smells like a driver issue, but i tried uninstalling both the dvd rom drive and the ide controllers and rebooting to let windows reinstall the drivers, and neither of these attempts fixed the problem. Anyone have any ideas? The dvd drive is a sony dru-800a, and it is the only drive connected to the secondary ide channel. My hard drive is on the primary ide channel. I have no other devices connected to the ide channels. The only other thing i changed when i had my computer in the old case was the 3. 5in floppy drive. I didn't feel the need to install it with the new case.

Usb Causing Computer To Freeze

I want to start off saying that i feel really dumb about posting this question. I have worked on and off in the it field for the last 14 years and this one is stumping me. I guess you could say that my skills have started to rot away. I have a slack data analyst position and have turned a screw driver on a computer is like a year. Mmmm brain beginning to mush. Here is my dilemma and i have googled it to no result. My neighbor has a home built machine that she has been having problems with since it was built last year. I didn't build it, but being a nice enough neighbor i thought i would lend her a helping hand. The computer has an asus m2n68-vm mainboard. This specific version does not have the dvi or hdmi built in. Surprising how all google searches point directly to that board. The person who built it installed a x64 5000+, a 7300 gs video card, 4gb ram, 80gb hard drive, and a cheap lite-on dvd drive. If i remember right, she paid 1k for it may-ish 2009. Ha ha, but i digress. So here is the problem. The neighbor claims that since november, the computer randomly freezes up when inserting a flash drive or when connecting her easyshare camera to the front usb ports on the front of this custom tower. She claims that she hasn't had the problem before that. So i take a look at the computer. It is not just the front ports. It is all ports. When the computer freezes it locks the keyboard and mouse. Explorer seems to be frozen completely. Its not every time a device is plugged in. Anyone have any ideas?

Computer Freeze At Bios And Screen Goes Black

Last friday the computer stopped working correctly. On start up it boots normally which it goes past the bios screen and can even enter the bios utility as would any normal working computer would do. Though this is the catch. Once the computer past the normal bios and begins to enter to the hard drive to boot from windows. The screen goes black, i think it freezes there, though i'm not sure because my friend only told me this stuff over the phone. These are some things that i told him to try over the phone. One make sure you test each ram (512mbx2) test each ram stick by itself. Make sure that you have only one in at a time, and alternate from each ram stick you have. So that you can test the memory because it might be damaged. After doing all that work. Testing the memory didn't do anything the computer still crashed with 512mb or 1024mb it didn't matter what it had, it still crashed. So i'm asking what you guys might think about this problem, and if you have any suggestions at specifications:

Intel core 2 duo 1. 86ghz
Asus ai series motherboard
512mbx2 (1024mb)
Ati radeon 1600 series pci-express video card
320gb hard drive

Usb Device Cause Computer To Freeze Or Not To Boot

I have recently been having issues left and right with my computer freezing or not given booting. I got it mainly fixed but i found out something strange. It would appear when i had my card reader connected and my wireless usb adapter connected (with the usb cord connected) the computer would either freeze while loading the os or not even boot at all. When the card reader was connected i had a 2gb sd card in it and for some reason the card wasn't being detected at all and vista wasn't even detecting the card reader till after maybe 5min. After plugging it in. Also, the other strange thing is when i had my usb wireless adapter plugged in with the usb cord the computer wouldn't even boot or it would freeze like above. When i finally just connected the wireless adapter by itself windows loaded fine with no freeze/lock ups (and yes, i don't have the card reader connected right now). Idk but i'd hate to say this but would it be a psu issue? I was playing l4d and killing floor fine last night with my xfx 4850 oc'ed. What is going on here? Side note: has the latest ati drivers been causing anybody any issues lately? Like lock ups or anything? At first though i thought it was the oc'ing from catalyst causing the issue but i guess it wasn't.

Mouse Cursor Makes My Computer Freeze

My computer is almost brand new, and quite the powerhouse, but for some reason, using the mouse will make the computer freeze up no blue screen of death, no error messages, it just dies and dosen't respond to anything. I can't ctrl+alt+del at all, and even pinging this machine from another (business intranet) results in lost packets (100% loss everytime. )

The solutions i have tried are numerous. First i thought if i changed drivers, nothing. New mouse, went from a ps/2 mechanical mouse to a usb optical mouse, complete with new drivers, no change still. Irq settings, seem ok, but i didn't look too deeply into that. Dma channels, seem ok. So, if this was some simple issue like a bad ps/2 port, i can understand, but using the keyboard to navigate my whole machine is getting a little annoying. Any suggestions from anyone?

Blue Screen Of Death - Computer Freeze

Ok. My pc just went through a bsod (blue screen of death) and i turned it off. When i try to turn it back on the light is on and everything but there is no signal to the monitor. I tried checking the cables and everything is fine. Is there anything that can cause this like a virus or something?

I just closed sro (silk road online) and moved my mouse over a shortcut icon and then the computer froze for about half a second and the bsod popped up. I have avg and just did a scan this morning so i dont think it was a virus. I'm just going to cut the power and go to sleep and hope that god loves me and fixes the computer. Im sort of freaking out now because i just got the computer. For christmas and my dad just got me a new graphics card (look for my other topic and you will know) and its coming in the mail. And my dad wont get me another one. This is why i stick to macs. I got about $110 from christmas and if my computer is dead im going to have to wait about 4 or 5 more years.

Usb Headset Causes Hp Computer To Freeze Until Unplugged

My problem relates to a usb headset. It appears that when i hit a heavy load on the system sound my computer freezes up. It comes back right away (most of the time) if i unplug the usb connector on the headset (logitech). If i do not unplug the headset the system will sometimes have a moving mouse cursor but it is completely unresponsive (can not click on anything on the win 7 menu bar). Please let me know if there is any additional information i can provide to help solve this problem.

Keyboard And Mouse Freeze - Must Unplug Computer

Nearly everyday my iq504 will suddenly just freeze up. The mouse and keyboard are completely unresponsive as well as the touchscreen. Ctrl-alt-del does nothing. The only choice i have is to unplug the computer (basically crashing eveything i may have had open at the time) and then restarting it up. Sometimes this happens while i am in the middle of using internet explorer, sometimes using microsoft money, sometimes using ms-outlook, etc. I have also had instances where everything was fine, i get up to get a soda, come back and i am frozen up. I wasn't even touching the computer and only left it for a couple minutes and this happens. Is this happening to me uniquely or do others here experience this as well. If so, has anyone found a solution? I've already downloaded the latest drivers from the hp website. I don't know what else to try at this point.

Computer Freeze When Saving Large Size Files

I have problems with my computer, when i save a large item it freezes. (Large size files / items noramly take 3+ hours to save. Have been doing alot of video editing recently and when it comes it save the overall work (render it), the whole computer freezes, managed to copy the file though the home network and do it on my bro's pc, but i can't save to dvd as it's doing the same. Thought it could be power supply, or processor over heating but if i shut down and restart it, it still has the same problems but it will freeze in a different point, getting to be a very annoying problem.

Esata Hdd Makes Computer Freeze Randomly

I have a problem when connecting my esata hdd to this motherboard (p5k mobo). Basically i'm using a samsung hdd with an enclosure and i connect it to the pc via a esata cable going to the esata input at the back of the comp. The problem is the computer keeps freezing for like 10-20 seconds randomly while the esata device is connected. If i switch the esata device off (via the enclosure's switch) it works fine. Is this a known issue for this mobo and e-sata?

Also there are so many drivers i cant find which one i need to update as i haven't updated the mobo since i got it like 3 years ago. My mobo is a p5k but on the manual it says p4s533-e.

Wow, Supreme Commander, And Cs Games Freeze Computer

For some reason i don't quite know, my computer will freeze up while playing video games. Currently, i only play wow, supreme commander, and cs and it freezes on all of these games. Sometimes after a freeze it will do the whole serious error bluescreen and restart, but sometimes it just stays there till i manually restart. Once it restarts however, it usually will continue to do this all day to the effect i can play maybe 5 min of a game before it will freeze. Also, sometimes my graphics streak across my screen to infinity. Im guessing my graphics card is to blame here?

Any ideas on whats going on and how i can fix this?

Computer Freeze, Screen Turns Black For Few Seconds Before Returning To Normal

The past few days my computer would freeze and then the screen would turn black for a few seconds before returning to normal. This happened whil surfing the web. I noticed that the desktop had a couple red and white and green pixel boxes that would appear after this happened. I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows xp. Got the computer running and the video seemed fine. I then installed my nvidia driver for my video card, and once i did that i started to see even more pixels and fonts became slightly distorted. My computer would then freeze worse that before, and it would not return to normal use. I had to uninstall the video card drivers for the time being. Do i need a new video card or could it possibly be a motherboard issue?

Edit: i downloaded xp service pack 2. And now my computer freezes like it did originally. I never installed the nvidia drivers from the cd. I'm not sure if it was included with service pack 2. But i have noticed some distortion of text. The problem is not as bad as when i had installed the drivers liek i mentioned above.

Hd4770 + Catalyst 9.5 = Bsod

Was getting lockups after messing with the ccc from the drivers off the xfx driver disc. I heard catalyst 9. 5 supported hd4770. I checked ati's website. I also checked xfx's website. Sure enough, they say it's alright. Install. Reboot. Windows xp loading screen. Finishes. Bsod! Every single time. Error in atikvmag.dll - address bf1177e9 base at bf100000, datestamp 49f7abc. Etc. The cool thing about it is that the installer for the drivers won't install in xp's safe mode because "setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware. " No ***. It's safe mode. I can probably use drive cleaner to remove it to be able to boot and install the 9. 4 hacked drivers from the xfx cd, but i would prefer to use a stable driver. Any ideas?

Catalyst Drivers On 5870

Finally got my new machine built (in sig) and windows 7 installed without issue. However as soon as i installed the catalyst drivers (latest from ati site 8. 66 rc6) windows boots and the monitor goes straight into power save mode as if the frequency is too high or something. I can boot into safe mode with no problems. Am going to try removing the drivers in safe mode and reinstall them, see if that helps. I already tried installing the rc7 version but catalyst installer needs to be able to detect the hardware, unlike the nvidia drivers, so they wont install in safe mode. I expect i will reinstall windows tonight and try again if uninstalling doesn't work. Any other ideas? Anyone else had issues like this?

Problems Installing Catalyst Drivers

I downloaded the drivers for my new 5850, but they don't seem to work in windows 7 (enterprise). Has anyone else run into this?

They get to the point where i'm offered the choice to install or uninstall old ati drivers. Whenever i select either option, i get a message saying "catalyst install manager has stopped working". This happens when i run without compatibility mode, and if i use compatability mode with xp sp3 and vista sp2. I've been trying to follow this guide to resolve the issue, but i think it was made for vista, not 7. The step that i get stuck on is number 2 where it says to uninstall the existing driver in the hardware manager and check the option to delete the driver so it doesn't re-install itself. The problem is, there's no check box on my windows 7 machine with that option, so the driver just comes back after i restart. The driver currently displaying is the standard vga graphics adapter. I could not manually delete the driver, either. Is there a trick to getting that check box to show up? Or is there an easier way to get the catalyst drivers to install?

5750 Card And Catalyst Drivers

Well i replaced my 4830 card in my htpc with a 5750 power-color card. The card itself works great except for 2 things and it looks like the catalyst control center is the guilty party. First im running vista 32 bit ultimate with all updated drivers and here my problem. 1st - the image scaling is gone in the ccc so when i select 1920x1080 rez i got nice black bars all the way around my image no scaling. 2nd - problem is it will not let me run at 60 hz on any hdtv using hdmi its forcing it to 30i, if i force the 60hz it then will drop my screen resolution. Im currently running this setup to a panasonic aeu2000. Keep in mind i had no problems with my old 4830 crad and older drivers.
