Headphones Recommendation
Replies: 10 | Post Date: 01-26-2010, 09:43 AM | User: Tudz | Forums: hardforum.comI was wondering if i could get a recommendation on some headphones in the $50usd to $100usd price range. I'm australian, so that may limit my purchase (i'm looking at no more than $200aud, preferably more like $100-150aud). I'm currently using a sennheiser pmx60 and want to upgrade to some comfortable over the ear phones that'll be good for listening to music while i study, playing games occasionally and watching tv and movies (all of which i do on my pc). So they need to be comfortable enough to use for several hours at a time. I'm in a shared house, so blocking out a bit of background noise would be nice. I've read a bunch of reviews, but so often its nice to just get some recommendations from the [h] community rather than reviews. Looking at the sennheiser hd212 pro, hd215 or hd555. The hd555 is pushing the upper limit of my budget already, so preferably cheaper than that. All of these i can get a bit cheaper than retail price, which is why i'm considering them. Are they any good? What would you recommend?

Mouse Recommendation
After 5 years the little squeaker is giving up the ghost. I like the size and shape of this mouse. I don't follow mice much so i don't know what is out there that would be similar and thought one of you might. I don't want anything over maybe $60. This one was made by elements.

Ups Recommendation
We are planning on replacing our old ups because it only last for about 15 minutes during power outage. The ff are the device load for the ups needed:
5 ibm servers (dc, file server, test server etc)
2 switch
1 firewall
1 router
1 modem
1 monitor, keyboard and mouse
1 kvm switch
1 external hdd
1 extra linux test server
(Will add another device in the near future)
Can somebody recommend what va should i need. I'm not very technical when it comes to this i cant even compute the load of the server. Based on the devices above, what is the best spec for a ups preferably apc. Can somebody explain the volt ampere? Will it last long if it's high? I need a ups that will last 1-2 hours at least. Input is 220-240 v / 50-60 hz and output is the same.

Headphone Recommendation
I'm looking to purchase some headphones in the near future, would love some advice. I have some pretty specific needs so maybe someone here has some ideas. Basically i compose and produce electronic music and i do my own pre-mastering work on monitors, but i prefer to do the actual composition work on headphones since it drives my girlfriend nuts to have to listen to half composed loops and synth patches for hours at a time. I currently own sennheiser hd-280 pro's which are great for my main use i bought them for which is live monitoring at events. Thing is they are extremely uncomfortable over time and i find myself only able to spend around an hour or so working on music before listening fatigue sets in. So i am now in the market for some open headphones to use at home and the 280's will stay in the gig bag for when i need them. Budget is up to $300 but i would like to keep it as low as possible to get the results i need. Ideally i am looking to spend $100-200, but if there is a set of cans out there that you know i'd just love for over that but under $300 let me know. They need to sound good, but don't need to be extremely accurate.comfort is a huge factor. I don't need something with lots of bass either. Main thing i'm looking for here is value related to my needs. If i can get away with <$100 i'm there.

Recommendation For Gaming Mouse
Well i'm pretty sure my mx1000 finally bit the dust. I was wondering from all you ppl what you would advise me to purchase to replace this thing. Looking to keep it around the $50 mark , and possibly get 2000 or better dpi also. Any and all ideas are appreciated. Also just for some added info, cord or no cord, doesnt matter. And yes size does matter here, i can't go back to something tiny. After using the mx1000 i'm pretty sure i want to replace it with a mouse with some size and girth to it!

Print Server Recommendation
Can someone recommend a decent print server that will allow me to unplug my laser printer from my computer and allow other pcs to print to it. Currently i have a brother 7420 "multi function" laser printer and it works great, but haivng it plugged into a usb port on my laptop means other pcs on my network cant print to it unless its plugged in. I'm currently looking at some of the linksys print servers, but id like to grab something off ebay for < $100
Ive read about a few of them, but many of the reviews were all bad. From being unreliable to just plain hard to get working.

Computer Speakers Recommendation
Please recommend me the best speakers i can get for my computer setup on a $500 budget. It doesn't matter whether they're computer speakers, studio speakers or whatever else there is on the market. I am currently looking at the logitech z5500s but if there's anything else in your opinion that trumps those speakers for gaming and music please don't hesitate to state the reasons why. I have a creative x-fi 5. 1 sound card and i am looking for a 5. 1 or greater speaker setup that can utilize it.

Headphone / Mic Recommendation
I'm looking to spend <$300 while getting a good sounding headphone/mic combination. Positional audio is nice, but i'd rather have better overall sound (as i'm playing wow will play music in the background at times) versus the best of the best positional audio. I looked at the zalman mic but was curious as to whether it picked up background noise and background voices. Also, i saw senn, audio, etc were good brands, but which is the best sounding and not just best positional?
Fyi:- i'm upgrading from the previous purchase of razor (hp1?) Headphones i made right after they came out. They are starting to go on me and i want a better set. These were "okay" but i definately wasn't awed by them as some have been and feel they were a bit overpriced for what you got (yes i have the soundcard to go with them and it's connected via the hdmi type connector).

Outlook Backup Methods Recommendation
I work for a company that pretty much utilizes most of it's business practices through outlook 2003 / 2007. I am trying to find a good program or method that can automate outlook backups within the network - save things such as all messages (which is most important), their signature and account settings info. Does anyone know an effective tool to do this and know it works from personal experience or should i just resort to backing up the pst files manually as the way to backup outlook messages. Any advice would be great.

Hard Drive 500gb Recommendation
I'm building a new system and need some advice on the hard drive decision. Planning on a wd black 640gb, wanting to know about experiences with them. Also may pick up a seagate hard drive 500gb on the cheap. I've heard that seagate is crap though. What's the word on that?

Printer Recommendation Canon, Lexmark, Hp
I need a printer for my classroom. After doing some research, i narrowed it down to 3 models: canon pixma mx860, lexmark interact s605, and hp photosmart premium all in one (cd055a). I have always had hp printers, and have not been impressed. I really liked the canon, except i read that if you run of of ink the whole printer won't function (not sure if that is true!) I have not had a lot of experience with lexmark, but the printer seems great and it is on sale this week. Scanning and duplexing are the features i am really looking for.

External Usb Hard Drive Recommendation
I'm looking to purchase an external usb drive for my desktop pc to serve as a backup for all my saved game files, steam files and other files, are there any particular ones that stand out? Any ones to avoid? I'll need a minimum of 500gb of space. I never purchased an external drive before, is it better to get one with a separate power supply?
Are there any usb 3. 0 external drives available? If i get a 3. 0 drive then i can still use it on my usb 2. 0 motherboard right (but with 2. 0 transfer speeds of course)?

Headphones For Pc Use
Well, my pc is the most used thing. And i use headphones a lot with it. I have been gaming a lot more on pc recently as well as editing video and such. Really love the sennheisers i have, but i think i need something a bit better, and with a mic (not required). So, i've been looking (don't have a huge budget), and found these. http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16826289001&tpk=pulsar%20sx
Are they nice quality? They are "virtual 7. 1 surround sound" which would be nice. They also have a microphone (do wish it was detachable), and look good. Is the microphone very clear as well?
Any other recommendations?

Looking For Some New Headphones
I've been using the, sony - studio monitor series headphones. They were cheap for $19. 99 back in the day. Well they have been broken once before, nothing bad, i gained the ability to take the ear pad side off. Anyways, my friend sat on them and broke the holder for the ear pad. So, i super glued it back on, however i don't know how long that will last. About time for a new pair i think, after 3 years. http://www.Bestbuy.com/site/sony+-+studio+monitor+series+headphones/4503923. P?Id=1051806135345&skuid=4503923&st=sony&cp=2&lp=1
I've always liked skullcandy's skullcrusher headphones. Looking at these, http://www.Skullcandy.com/shop/skullcrushers-black-pinstripe.html
However, i'm open to other ideas and suggestions. They have to be full headphones though, i hate those ear buds. Preferably around the same price range ($70).

Which Headphones ?
For xp the best deal overall for xp atm is the prelude + the jvc har-x700 or 900 headphones for about $200. Crazy good gaming audio and very nice for music too. Both need a zalman clip on mic though. The x-fi titanium, the $100, newegg only? Version, is the bang for the buck card now though. The prelude still is better but if you want to save some $$ and still get fine sound. The koss sb-40 headset is the best cheap gaming headset too. The mic sometimes plain sucks though so be aware of that. For vista there is less need for a gaming soundcard. I would go with the zero usb dac/amp or the upcoming av123 x-head instead. If you want just music, well that is different. Pm me about that b/c it really depends on $$, music genres, special equipment etc. This thread is intended to answer the most often asked questions posted here. The listing is of the most commonly recommended headphones and headsets for gaming. If there are specific questions pertaining to other aspects of headphone audio, please do ask them here and we will do our best to answer. This link leads to the place with the most overall headphone knowledge. It is easy to get completely confused so don't think you are stupid. It is also, the best place to get used headphones for cheap b/c ppl tend to keep buying headphones until they find one they like. That being so, there are lots of great deals there lol. http://www.Head-fi.org/forums/index.php
Faq and general knowledge
Me? I have speaker headphones and a 12" sub lol. More on that later. Trust me this can get expensive quickly. I have tried every headphone under $1500 with very few exceptions. Truthfully, like 50 headphones or more. I have lost count. My system currently is a hodgepodge of many different brands which i am constantly changing. How crazy is it? Well, these are my "headphones" now lol. Not everyone agrees with me that is fine. I just know what most people think by this time lol. That, and i have heard every mainstream headphone with an x-fi so yeah. Ok. This is just the start really but here is the quick and dirty on gaming headphones and headsets. 5. 1 gaming headsets pretty much are good for gaming/movies only. They all stink for music. All of them. They do good for positional audio but lack decent sound quality b/c they cram a bunch of tiny speakers into a small space as opposed to two large, decent drivers. Also, as mrguvernment mentioned, music is rarely recorded in 5. 1. Most "gaming headsets" are poorly made, overpriced, buggy pos so my advice is to avoid them until someone comes out with a good one. Yes some of them don't completely suck but still are not as good as the ones listed below so trust me or them your choice. Usb headsets have issues and have generally crappy build quality and sound. However, usb dac/amps like the zero are very good as sources now and should be strongly considered when using vista especially. It is best to use an x-fi with xp even though we all hate creative. There is only one other gaming soundcard not made entirely by creative that provides eax 5 and that is the prelude. The prelude is the best gaming card imo. Swappable op-amps, separate digital out and mic in, plain and simple sounds right to me. For vista, well, you don't really benefit that much due to a lack of hardware acceleration support. The front panel of the x-fi is a joke for a headphone out. Do not use it as such unless desperate beyond measure. Laptops? Boy that is a tough issue too. The creative audigy 2zs and x-fi notebook are the only two laptop cards that give eax 4. (Thanks trombe) no laptop soundcards are better than a standard x-fi for desktop currently. The new vista laptops have pretty decent sound for music at least if you can one with a decent headphone jack. Gaming i can't really say b/c mine is not a gaming laptop. Realtek audio gives eax 2 software. If you want better sound for a laptop you need to specify if you have optical out or usb. Iem or in ear monitor are headphones that you stick into your ears like earplugs. They are great if you don't want to hear anything else. They do lack sound stage b/c they are in your ear but still are pretty cool if you can put up with the hassle and sometimes discomfort of having them in your ear. The shure e2g is a gaming oriented iem made for portable game consoles like the psp etc. It is about $100. There are many other iems just ask. Read more at the forums.

Psyko 5.1 Headphones
Has anyone tried these?
I've been using a set of medusa nx headphones for a while now but would like to see if there is anything better out there. I really don't care about the price. My wife won't let me do a 5. 1 in our office because playing cs:s would really annoy her so i'm limited to finding a good set of 5. 1 headphones. These have had decent reviews.

Driving Headphones
I'm considering replacing my current creative x-fi xtreme music with an auzen x-fi forte 7. 1 sometime in the future when the price drops. My main reason is the amp headphone output and it being separate from the other outputs, yet still having the x-fi chip and support. I have no qualms with my current x-fi, but i am getting a set of jvc ha-rx700's and may pick up a set of ha-dx3's in a little while too, maybe something else. Just depends on how well i like the 700's overall. It's my first true headphones in years. So i'm kinda stoked to get back to them. But none-the-less i like the idea of a dedicated amp on the card with x-fi output support and goodies, and having my powered logitech x-230's on a separate output instead of my current situation using the hpa2's provided splitters. Plus swappable opamps would be interesting in the future too without having too much hassle and a pci-e 1x slot is better placed for me than the pci slot. So i'm open to suggestions as i don't want to spend $130 on that card tbh, so i will use my headphones with my current x-fi till then. I don't mind the software or the card, but i would like to have a decent headphone drive eventually, but i'd like to get some ideas. Again i love the idea of the auzen card, but just can't spend that atm.

Headphones That Go Around The Whole Ear
Anyone know of good quality headphones that the structure of it goes around the ear so your ear doesn't get any pressure from wearing the headphones? I'm interested in trying a pair out to see how well they work. Anyone have experience with such headphones?

Headphones $100
I currently have a pair of sennheiser pc-151s (headset) but i never use the microphone and i find them to be quite uncomfortable. So i am going to sell them on ebay and get a pair of decent headphones instead. Main usage will be for playing pc games (fps mostly) and occasionally some music (no particular type of music). The budget is flexible, but in the region of £65 ($100). Though electronics tend to be more expensive here in the u. K so that kinda throws the currency conversion out the window. Currently using the asus p5q pro's integrated audio:
Audio chipset: realtek alc1200
Audio channels: 8 channels
Would it be a good idea to get a sound card for headphones in this price range?

Sony mdr-v6 - 70$
Sennheiser hd-515 - 69$
Im not sure if any of those headphones would require a amp, but i definitely want to stay away from that. Please help.

Headphones For Studio Use
I am looking for the cheapest, best headphones for home studio use. I am starting a small project studio and was curious what you guys use. Listening to mp3's will be secondary. I prefer to stick with akg if that is the best. Budget is no more than $200.

Lightweight Headphones
I recently got a slacker radio portable unit (the 4 gb one), cheap from buy.com ($50). I am pretty happy with the player, but the earbuds that came with it are lacking (they seem to distort at times, too. Not sure if this is a slacker issue or the buds, but i blame the buds. ). So. I am looking for a lightweight pair of headphones - not too expensive ($35 at most). I will be using them on jogs, so i'm looking for something fairly durable. Any suggestions are welcome!

Best Way To Connect Headphones
So what is the best way to connect headphones? Usb, 3. 5mm. Im thinking of getting a new headset and im not sure what to look for in a connector. Im running an audigy 2zs. Ive seen some that have optical and coax connections on them too. What would give me the best sound? These would only be used for gaming.
