Hard Drive Recovery Process With Mechanical Failures

Unfortunately, i have to recover data and my backup hard drive is failing. It's a mechanical failure - lots of clicks and some high-pitched squeals. Looked into hard drive recovery options and it seems like they all want to charge me hundreds or thousands of dollars. Does anybody know of a reasonably reliable hard drive recovery process that can deal with mechanical failures but at a reasonable price?

Whats Up With All Of The Hard Drive Failures Lately?

I have been shopping around for hard drives on newegg and i dont understand why there are so many bad reviews. Every hd i look at seems to have a large failure rate. I read stuff like 3 out of 5 drives were doa and some times worse! Even seagate which i have always had good luck with. Whats going on? Did maxtor buy all of the hd companies? Whats the best bet for large 750gb-1tb drives right now?

Hard Drive Recovery Possible ?

My seagate 1. 5tb 7200. 11 seems to have died quickly, and before i realized what was going on the drive is only detected in the bios, and trying to access anything just gives me io errors. Is there anything else i could try? I have it backed up with the exception of 10gb or so of new data that wasn't caught by the nightly backup. I suppose the only other method would be to replace the controller. I did try the freezer trick for about 8 hours but it didn't seem to help.

Recovery Of Hard Drive Data

I need help to retrieve the data from my western digital hard drive (40g). Last week my power supply burnt and damaged my mother board. So i tested with another existing system unit with my wd hard drive, it hang in the bios stage after the memory test finish. Cannot do anything. Is it the hard drive problem? May i know anyone can tell me how can i recover my data inside this bad hard drive? I need to recover my data since wd technical support only can give me a replacement of hard drive. I heard a lot of information about freezing the hard drive but i dont dare to do it cos i am afraid it will lead to totally un-recovery stage. I have a lot of useful information and some financial excel format that is shared with my roommate.

Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.

Hard Drive Problem - Data Recovery

I got a harddrive here that's running windows 98 and while you try and boot in it's just fatal error after fatal error. . Vxd's .dlls, mass blue screens and just ends in a freeze up eventually. I'd give the names of the files thats giving errors but it's literally different ones every time. I tried to get into the os from safe mode and it returned a himem.sys error. I figured the ram might be bad but it's good so i copied himem.sys from the 98 cd into windows directory in dos, but still getting the same error. I'm at a loss for what to do now and suppose the only thing i can do is try and recover the data and wipe the harddrive. I was wondering if perhaps i could connect the harddrive to my windows xp machine and salvage the data through there or if anyone has tips on how i could go about this i'd be most thankful.

New Installation Hard Drive Data Recovery

Here's the situation:

1. Had a pc with a motherboard that crashed. 2. Pc had 400 gig hard drive of which 380 gigs of data was used leaving 20 gigs remaining. 3. Replaced the motherboard and installed a new windows partition in the remaining 20 gigs of data. 4. Windows runs and everything works fine. However:

1. Old partition 'c:' says it's corrupted. New partition 'e:' says it has around 400 gigs free. 2. Even though 'c:' should contain 380 gigs of data and 'e:' should only contain the remaining 20 gigs. How do i recover my data?

Interrupting A Usb Flash Drive Process

I have a problem with my usb mp3 player. I accidentally pressed the record button for a long time, and it recorded for about 45mins, so i stopped it. Since it's a 45min recording, the saving process is quite long. Now, since it's too long, i literally waited for hours for it, and alas, no more battery. Now, whenever i start the flash drive using a fresh battery or plug it in a usb port, it keeps on saying "recovering the recording file". I've tried waiting for it to "recover", but it just doesn't recover. Now here's my thought. I plug it in a usb port, it can't be recognized because the mp3 player keeps on doing its "recovery". I tried the control panel>admin tools>comp mgt and it doesn't work. The only good thing is, the usb port is able to provide power to the mp3 player so it still tries to recover the recording file. Is there a way to "interrupt" the recovery my mp3 player does so i can directly access it without him performing the recovery job? Just give me a way to make it show to my computer so i can format it.

Truecrypt Drive Recovery With Password

I've recently been experimenting with duel boot (xppro, ubuntu) and i foolishly failed to removed my truecrypt fully encrypted drive and it's mirror. When the dust settled i discovered that truecrypt would no longer mount either drive. Windows xp service pack two sees one drive as unformatted, and another as a 128 gb volume, which it is not, they are both 300gb drives. In case all my efforts to recover either volume fail my question becomes this. Is there a service or technique that would allow me to recover the data if i could provide the encryption scheme and passphrase?

As an american i am told to be paranoid that anything can be cracked. The truecrypt forums are a draconian joke and frankly even if it weren't under populated i have high hopes that a greater level of skill can be found here anyway as this place is the top computer specific response from google when given "cryptography forum".

Recovery - Usb Flash Drive

Have a usb thumb drive. Was using a mac yesterday, saving, copying, and using multiple files from my flash drive. At the end of the day, i went to open a file and realized that two entire (and fairly important) folders were missing, as were several more recent files-some from the same day. Now my drive reads as though it has more space available than it should. I keep seeing all these scams and $50 services to recover lost files from flash memory. Anyone know of any reliable free-ware or techniques i could use to get my files back?

Quiet Mechanical, No Numeric Pad, Full Size Keys Keyboard

Help me find this mythical creature! (And, if at all possible, keep the cost under $100). My razer tarantula is just too big for what currently passes for my "desk" and has a bunch of features i never, ever use. I've literally never programmed a single one of the shortcut keys, and i've had the thing a little less than a year. It's time to replace it. I need to keep full size keys - there is a reason i bought my 12" hp over a 9" or 10" netbook that'd do everything i do computation-wise with it for 1/3rd the cost. I'd like this keyboard to be very compact, as in no unnecessary blank spaces beyond those to preserve layout and no huge bezel, but i am not willing to sacrifice key size to get there. Really, if you took a standard full keyboard like the razer lycosa and cut the numeric pad and wrist-rest off then halved the size of the bezel, that'd be my ideal layout. I realize that may not be possible, of course. I also feel the tarantula is a bit "mushy" for lack of a better word, though please don't confuse this with wanting more force necessary to push keys; i don't. I would like to switch to mechanical key switches on my next board, however, partly in hopes of reducing stress on my hands (i type a lot, that's not going to change any time soon) and partly to increase the keyboard's longevity. That said, i also really, really don't want the thing to be loud. At all. Clicky-clicky noises are bad, and i am afraid this could prove a problem. Anything louder than your standard membrane or laptop type keyboard will drive me nuts, and fast. If anything i would like it to be quieter than most. From what i understand the nearest switch to what i would want is the cherry "black" type, so i've used that as a place to start. I've found a few potential options in the $50-100 range, but they are all either too big, too small (smaller keys, very strange layout), or in some other way severely flawed. So, does the collective consciousness of the mighty [h] know my mind here? Any suggestions? If you recommend a given model, please include how / where to purchase it, as i've found several japanese manufactured boards i really like the look of that i either can't find for sale, or that importers want $200+ for.

Xp Boot Process Hangs

For the last couple of weeks i've had an issue with my computer at work. Upon startup (running windows xp), the computer would freeze at the windows xp progress/boot screen. The progress bar would freeze and hang. However starting up in safe mode was generally not a problem. Searching for an answer online, i followed the advice of several people and repaired my installation of xp. No change. Thinking it was a hardware issue, we started swapping out potentially problematic components like the motherboard, memory, graphics card, hard disk(with a fresh os install), cpu, and finally the power supply. Almost every component in the box. And still no change. Then last night we booted it up and left it to hang to see what would happen. After about 10 minutes of hanging, the boot process continued and windows booted up. We repeated this several times and each time it hanged, we left it and it booted fine. A few other times it booted without hanging. The only thing that we have not changed is the case itself, which is at least 6 years old.could the wiring from the casing (the power button) have an impact? Logically it makes sense since almost everything else is new, but its such an odd problem we didn't even really think of the casing. Any ideas why the case would cause this issue?

Broken Drive Caused By Data Recovery Software

I accidentally formatted a drive recently and used file scavenger to get the data back, copying everything it found onto another drive plugged into a dock. After rebooting or hotplugging the drive back into the dock it makes my computer freeze up. On reboots windows xp just hangs after the splash screen. I'm assuming i copied boot sector files or something on to the drive that i shouldn't have. Everything is accessible on the drive when i plug it into my laptop running os x, but as soon as any windows install sees the disc it either freezes up or bluescreens. Is there any way to delete the offending files and fix the disc? The only system files i see in os x is a folder "system volume information", none of the $ type files i saw when first scanning with file scavenger.

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Help With Hp System Recovery

I recently had an issue with one of my hard drives in raid 0, so i had to order recovery discs from hp and reinstall the operating system. I just finished running the discs, and everything seemed to have completed successfully. After finishing, it instructed me to reboot the computer. When it loaded back up, it didn't boot windows, just opened a blue hp screen, opened command prompt and started running some codes. After this, it went to a plain yellow screen and shows two little folders with files going across. This screen has been up for about an hour, and i'm starting to get worried. Should i just wait it out? Could a bad hard drive have caused the raid failure, then somehow survived the recovery and is now causing issues? If that's the case how do i know which hard drive is bad?

Hdd Recovery Issue

I have a serious hdd recovery issue, and don't know what to do. I have a 160 gig hdd, primary and secondary is the same. I started my comp (desktop) today and suddenly it went 100% working, and i cudnt even do shift+ctrl+esc for the task manager ( os: xp pro sp1). Its been stable for a long time so all configuration is fine. This is a instant error due to some anomaly , not configuration! Ok, so after a while i pushed the restart button. This must of corrupted the drive as it was reading or writing, as now the mobo detects the hdd, but yet it is not working (i/o error). The mbr doesnt detect the disk, (i get a geometry error, due to secondary disk being listed probably as primary. ) The boot loader is grub as i have a linux box as well on prim disk. This has nothing to do with the grub being corrupted either. It simply is that the primary hdd is having an i/o error, cos i restarted the computer while it was working? I have never seen a hdd been damaged by this before, and wondering if it was some malicious code, running the hdd on purpose like that to ruin it?

In any case, xp recovery doesnt work, and no point in resetting the mbr surely as my disk is recognised, but not accessible. Is there *any* way for me to fix the i/o, or somehow does anyone know a fix for such a problem. Please help, as i keep 4 logical partitions on the physical drive, and as long as it has this i/o error, i cannot format it and rerun an os installation on the c partition.

Data Recovery - Vista

My ibm ideapad woke up with "missing/corrupt bootmgr". Not good i know, but anyways i was just gonna back up my data and give it a fresh install and everything would be better. Right. No that would be too much to ask from ms. My normal means of data backup in this situation would be to just plug hdd into another computer and copy it off. However when i plug in the drive all the data seems to be hidden. From what i figure probably a vista security. How do i get the data off? The hdd with the data was vista and i'm using an xp desktop to get the data. I see the hdd fine. Just can't access the data. Does anyone know how?

I tried using a data recovery.couldn't think of anything better. Again i can see the data just don't have permission to access it.
