Setup Small Business Server

How to setup small business server? I currently use godaddy to host a non-profit website. I would like to be able to cut out the middle man. My home/office network (all wireless) currently has

**Network detail**

5 desktops, 5 laptops, 2 printers, 1 linksys wireless-n router, 1 hawking hi-gain dual band wireless-n range extender, 1 silver motorola dsl modem (6mb/s max downstream) 3 wireless entertainment systems, and 4+ mobile devices at any given day. Dsl>router>network a > computer(stop)

Or

Dsl>router>network a > range extender> network b> computer(stop))

**Network detail**

I would like to be able to host my site from my home/office. I'd also like to be able to share files over two separate networks (network a and network b) i am good with networking, but i don't know what i need to setup a server to host the website and have file sharing for the two networks. I know its not advisable but i would like to keep this wireless.

Repartition Existing Drives In Windows Server 2003

I am trying to find a tool to partition a drive in a w2003 server. I have found 2 so far but they want like $499 for them. I have a new dedicated server and they want to charge an arm and a leg to partition it if they do it b/c it was not originally on the initial work order. I just need to split the drive in to 2 drives. Typically this is very simple with like parttion magic or similar, but none of these appear to support w2003 server, just w2k, and xp. Does anyone know of a partitioning tool that is cost effective that will partition an existing drive on a w2003 server? I have remote/root access to these servers so if i can find a tool i can do this myself. Any ideas?

Windows 2003 Server 32 Bit Array Support

I am building a new server, everythings done short of hdds. With a dell perc 5/i i plan on running 8* 1. 5tb drives in raid5, giving me 10. 5tb array. Will windows 2003 server standard 32bit support such an array?

I will ofcourse be using gpt as is supported, but i wasn't sure if this size is possible. I currently on my old server which also has a dell perc 5/i have 4* 750gb in raid5, and the array size is 2. 04tb. I never could be bothered figuring out if that was the proper size or if i was being limited to some magical number.

Delayed Write Errors On Server 2003 Raid 5ee Array

One of our file servers consists of 10 hard drives on a raid 5ee array. Recently, we began getting delayed write errors:

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file xxx. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. "

I've talked to adaptec and sent them diagnostic information from the raid card and they said the card is in perfect working order, and the hard drives appear to be as well. I hooked the server up to a different port on the switch, used a different cable, and switched to the 2nd nic on it as well. I'm still getting these errors, and we've lost several documents. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I'm almost at the point where i want to just format the entire thing and start over.

Windows Has Been Shutdown To Prevent Damage To Your Computer

When i'm installing from my windows xp disk the initial blue screen comes up saying it's loading all the stuff from the cd basically and then i get the error message as follows:-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer, press f8 and select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information:

*** Stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08)

*** Pci.sys - address f748e0bf base at f7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c

I have no idea what would cause this. I'm over-clocking my cpu some some bios settings are changed, could setting them back to defaults solve this issue? It doesn't really make sense to me. Please, i'd be grateful for any advice.

Can A Hardware Button Utilize The Software Shutdown In Windows?

Can you wire a button into a computer (through serial, mobo jumpers, whatever) with a suitable utility so that the button doesn't do a hard powerdown (atx style) but instead uses the windows shutdown?

What would be even more convinient is if the same button could be used for power on / shutdown, but i'm not sure if that is possible. I guess the easiest solution is if there is a utility that lets the atx power on/off button access the windows shutdown sequence. Is there?

Does anyone understand what i'm asking, and does anyone have any suggestions?

Small Powered Monitors For A Small Hdtv

I just ordered a dell s2209w lcd (1080p, 21. 5") to use as a small hdtv with my workstation. I also need some small speakers to connect to my digital cable box. I just want some clean, simple audio since the tv will be tuned to news m-f or a football game on the weekend. Cheap is good for this purchase. Think these would do a decent job?

Port Forwarding - Windows Home Server

One thing about windows home server is really starting to tick me off. The ip address of my whs is 192. 168. 1. 50. I'm sitting in my living room, open a browser window and navigate to the address. It seems that i must enable "remote access" in order to be able to access the server's web page, which makes sense. However, when i enable remote access, it goes through a setup wizard, making sure that it's reachable from within the network, then performs a upnp check on the router, then attempts to open ports in the router so that it's available to the outside world, then starts to set up a domain name. No way in *** do i want that. I want to be able to reach the page from within my own network, but i don't want anyone on the outside to be able to see my information. So now, even though i check the box to ignore the warning, i'm periodically warned by the network health panel that it was unable to set up port forwarding in my router. Good, because i don't want it to. How do i get it to stop trying to configure my router while still maintain the ability to access the web interface from within my network?

Business Network Switches

I need to add some network switches to our network. I need
1x 48 port 4xsfp switch in our main comms
4 x 48 port 2x sfp at our 4 cabinets located around the factory. Each cabinet switch will be connected to the comms room via existing fibre optic links. Ideally i want the switch to be
-Stackable
-Vlan capable
-Qos
-Layer 3
-Poe capable

Cisco switches are most likely too expensive for the job and i'm concerned i could do better than netgear ones (reports of failed units and lost vlan settings). Can anyone advise on above? Either equipment you've had experience of or switches in that medium small business price range that might be worth investigating?

When i went into the properties of the box that pops up when you hit "ctrl + p", i looked at the paper tab and realized that the problem is that i don't have an 8. 5"x11" option there for whatever reason. I had that option before i installed my new hp photosmart c309a printer. Is there a way to get the option to print on 8. 5x11 back?

Computer Shutdown

I have a intel 850gb mobo and i formatted my hdd 2x thinking it was a bad install. When i hit start, shudown, not restart the computer goes thru the powering down phrase i hear the familiar click of the hdd whichs turns it off and bam, the hdd is off but the mobo and fans including cpu are still on. I replaced the power supply to no avail. I have to hit the reset button then the power button to quickly too turn off computer. Strange, im thinking the mobo is not sending the signal to the power supply commanding it to turn off. My hdd is new and was working finr, i like to reformat my hdd 2x a year to clean off the mess.

Computer Shutdown Randomly

I built my computer a few years ago and have had no problems (p4). Today it decided to shutdown randomly. I tried rebooting but it would turn on like it was going to start but bios would not post and it would shut down after about 5 seconds. My first inclination was that it was a failing power supply. Replaced that without any luck. The odd thing is that when i plug in both power components from the ps to the mobo it turns on and after five seconds turns off;

Yet, when i do not have the 12v 4pin plugged in, the computer stays running, although it does not load windows. I checked the ram, light on mobo is on, nothing smells fried, i'm hoping it is not the mobo.

Pc Shutdown - Buzzing Noises

Recently my computer has been randomly shutting itself down. Immidiatly after the shutdown a loud buzzing/beeping noise occurs from the front of the pc. My computer is custom made from the internet, and so i dont know who to contact. The part making the noise is a small black circular object, about the size of a 10c piece. Its connected to my motherboard by a black/red wire. I believe the wire goes next to the wires for my on/off, reset, and on & working lights. I replaced my hard drive as my university technician told me my hd was seizing, however that isnt the problem. Any ideas suggestions to my problem? Or could someone tell me what this noisey black thing is! And how can i fix it!

Computer Does Not Turn Off After Shutdown ?

I have an old opteron desktop that i will be using as a home server. The issue i've been having for the past few months is that it will not physically turn off after the os finishes shutting down. It used to, when i was using it as my main desktop, so i have no idea what has changed. What i have tried:

Windows 7 professional x64
Windows server 2008 r2 x64
Windows xp professional sp2
Reset bios
Install nvidia chipset drivers from manufacturer cd
Windows xp sp3
Ubuntu 7. 10
Flash bios to 4/06/2006 from 3/29/2006

Things i have tried since posting:

Unplug hard drives, boot ubuntu livecd, halt

In all of the operating systems i have tried, none can successfully turn off the computer. The only indication that the computer is supposed to have shut off is that i hear something turn off (hard drive maybe), and then all power would normally be cut, but now that sound doesn't happen in xp after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried disabling usb power suspend in server 2008, with no effect. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Edit: the os's shutdown screen remains on the display after it "shuts down". Specs:

Amd opteron 144 1. 8ghz
Dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d (modded to sli-d)
3gb ddr-400
Two geforce 7600 gt (one is out of the machine right now)
Single 160gb ide hard drive
Single 320gb sata2 hard drive

Pc Reboot When Set To Shutdown

I have a hp dc5700 and i just installed a nvidia 8400 pci. When i shutdown the pc it restarts. I tested without the card and the on board video works fine and the computer shuts down properly. Tried reinstalling the drivers and un-checking automatic reboot to see if it was blue screening, but nothing. There are no errors in the log and the pc works fine. I am leaning toward hardware (either the motherboard or video card). Any suggestions?

Small Wireless Webcams

I need to purchase a wireless web cam that is pretty small and works well. We are having an issue with theft at our office and need to monitor one very small area where we keep some valuable and small items. We have 20 foot ceilings and there aren't too many places to mount a normal webcam. Also, i want to catch the person stealing, not just deter theft so it needs to be inconspicuous. Are the x10 cams worth anything? Or should i look for something else?

Cheap Small Computers

They don't have to be tiny, but looking at either building or buying 6 small computers for here at work. We are looking to have 6 monitors flat mounted into a 'desk' or sorts, and wanting 6 machines to run very basic programs(mostly reading pdf files, or word documents)

Any suggestions? Was looking at the dell hybrid studio, but these run $500 new, was looking at something cheaper if possible. Also, doesn't have to be quite that small.

Laptop With Small Pixels

Just wondering if anyone knows of any laptops with small pixels. To explain: i have an hp nx8220 laptop, which has a 15. 4" screen with 1920 x 1200 pixels, which is a pretty small pixel pitch. I love this. I have good eyes, and always too much on my screen. However, the laptop died this weekend. I'll be trying to repair it, but i'm also thinking of getting something new, but most laptops i see have a larger pixel size (most have a 1280 x 800 resolution for the same screen size) if anyone can point me to some models, i'd be very grateful.

Printer Printing So Small

Why is my printer printing so small?

Answer:- i'm guessing you're printing stuff from e-mail or the internet. This is a common problem that is associated with the monitor screen resolution and has nothing to do with the printer, it's setup or software. If you're using a specific software program, then you need to adjust your font size accordingly to print larger. Otherwise read the following. The following is for use with internet explorer 7, but may be the same or similar for other versions or web browsers. One way is to go to your menu bar at the top of your web browser, click on "file" then "print preview". At the top of the window there should be a small window with "shrink to fit" in it. Click the arrow on that box for a drop down list and choose something, like 90% (there is a custom option at the bottom of the list if you need to set something unique in between what's listed to set it to something that works best) and see how it changes the print size of what is to be printed out and choose the one that looks and works best for you without cutting off text somewhere. This will make it larger when printed out. Another way that usually works to make the print larger when printing internet stuff & emails is by changing the print view size on the screen to a larger size in your web browser (this is separate from your other setting you've already setup). Go to the menu bar at the top (i.e. Internet explorer), click on "view, " then "text size" then select a size like "larger" or "largest" (something higher than what you're currently set to. )

Sometimes adjusting the current window's magnification (lower right corner of screen or ctrl button + scroll wheel on mouse) can have an affect on print size. The only other method is to copy & paste the text into a text editing software like word and adjust the text size there. If you're using a text program, then you simply adjust the size of the text to a 12 or 14 point, or larger, font size (adjust depending on the font and size you need) and that should do the trick.

Thoughts On Small Computing Cluster

Doing some simulations for my graduate research and i am in need of a couple more machines to run it on. Currently running on a 3. 2ghz p4 w/ 3gb ram takes 18 hours. I need to be able to run faster than this and with multiple inputs. So i need some extra computers. It's a single threaded app so a faster dual core is much better than a quad. I can get some old optiplex for about 300 with 2. 8ghz p4 in them but the problem is that i need at least 2gb ram to run properly. And with it being older ram it's about 100 bump it up to 2gb each node. So with that i'm looking at $400/node. I think i can get a newer system from someone at that price point. I spec'ed out a dell inspiron 530n @ $429/node with e2140, 2gb ddr2 (and room to add more if i need) but it also has some things i feel could be trimmed (128mb geforce 8300gs). These are all going to be run headless so i don't need monitor/keyboard/mouse/nice video card. Also don't need windows as i'm running going to be running a stripped down ubuntu. Any suggestions on getting the price of the dell down a bit or somewhere else to look? I am looking at 4-8 nodes so i don't really have the time to build them myself.

Mlc Drives For Small Databases

I ran the iometer tests using the default access pattern with a 1gb file size, 16 outstanding io, and ran for 5 minutes. Seems too good to be true. A single 120gb ocz vertex would replace three of my sql servers and 12 drives in total including hot spares. So tempting. The sata drives are 160gb western digital ys drives. The sas drives are 15k rpm 36gb fujitsu. Three drive raid 5 sets. I have the spreadsheet with the test results. The performance is unbelievable but i ran the tests many times and they always come back within a couple percent of each other.
