Is Usb Hard Drive Safer Than Normal Hard Drive ?
Replies: 16 | Post Date: 10-17-2007, 12:35 PM | User: Regan1985 | Forums: forums.techpowerup.comAt the moment i have about 2t of data over 5hard drives, most of then films i have converted to avi from home as i live in uni halls the rooms are small, i am worried that leaving my pc on all the time will lower the life of my hard drives with data on, do you think it would be a good choice to put them into a usb drive and that way i only use them when i need? Is usb hard drive safer than normal hard drive ? Or am i just being silly?

Usb External Hard Drive Front Panel Usb Connection Problem
I have a usb connection external hard drive. It works perfectly and is detected in computer one.computer 2 and 3 starts to detect it but stops and says there it might have problems working perfectly. And no drive letter shows in computer 2 & 3. But computer 1 reads it shows it. All 3 computers have win xp pro and all 3 computers detect and show all other usb devices with no problems. This issue here is with the front panel usb connection on all cases. Not the back. Anyone here have a solution?
It's a 2. 5 travelstar hitachi ide hard drive in an enclosure case.

Usb Hard Drive Does Not Show Up
I have a usb case and i put a laptop drive in and windows recognizes it in the device manager but it does not show up anywhere. Originally i had another laptop hard drive in there but it died. I thought it would be simple plug and play but it won't show up so i can't format/use it.

Sharing A Usb Hard Drive Between Two Pc
I have two pc setup in my room 1 is the 1 in my sig which isnt that quiet and lights up like a crimbo tree, so at night i have my old 900mhz pc setup which is when i download, but is there a way that i can download onto my usb hard drive and then turn my good pc on and also use the same hd? Like some kind of usb hub? That would connect both of them? Rather then having to have both pcs on at the same time?

Usb Hard Drive Detects Off
I am using windows xp sp2. I have attached seagate 80 gb laptop hard disk with usb casing. I am suffering a strange problem. When i connect it, the os detects it and shows in explorer. But when i transfer data from my internal hard disk to external one, it detects off after some time as well, an error message occurs that windows can't recognize the device and stops copying data. When i re-attach the hdd, it again shown in the explorer. This happens especially some large data (more than 1 gb !) Is transferred. I have formatted my system and installed os again, but the problem remains same. I have also changed my external casing but the problem remains same. In another system, the problem does not occur. In the same system, i am using external hard disk seagate baracoda, but it works fine.

Hard Drive Encryption Upon Boot From Usb
I am getting a few new external 500gb hard drives (try 3), and i am going to be needing some kind of encryption program. All 3 drives will be encrypted, but one of them is going to have a few backups on it - acronis trueimage ones. I know trueimage can encrypt, but i want to get the best possible encryption, if only so i can point and laugh as i describe how long it'd take to crack it. I've considered truecrypt, however, it requires encryption software on both ends. I want something that, upon boot from usb, asks me what the password is, and then becomes availiable to the system. Is there anything like that availiable? Truecrypt is probably going to be used on the other two 500g's (unless you guys have better suggestions), but i do think it'd be a good idea to keep the data encrypted on the backup 500g.

Any Problems With Usb Hard Drive Connected 24/7 ?
I have a desktop computer. I'd like to attach a usb hard drive to the desktop for backup purposes. My question is, are there any problems with having a usb hard drive attached pretty much 24/7. For example, are there any problems during reboots and normal day to day activities?

External Usb Hard Drive Recommendation
I'm looking to purchase an external usb drive for my desktop pc to serve as a backup for all my saved game files, steam files and other files, are there any particular ones that stand out? Any ones to avoid? I'll need a minimum of 500gb of space. I never purchased an external drive before, is it better to get one with a separate power supply?
Are there any usb 3. 0 external drives available? If i get a 3. 0 drive then i can still use it on my usb 2. 0 motherboard right (but with 2. 0 transfer speeds of course)?

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive
I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?
And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?
Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?
Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Usb 2.0 Issues - Hard Drive Boot Up Problem
When i connected a usb2 hard drive the external hard drive wouldn't boot up - in fact the light would not even light up! I tried again with 2 smaller and completely different usb2 memory sticks and both of those would not work and would also not light up!
These were all in perfect order and had worked on another machine only hours before so i knew the external hdd's were good. However when i took the sticks and the external hdd back to another machine they would not boot up either! All of the usb2 devices have been fried!
I've tried changing the cables etc for the external hdd but it makes no difference! The weird thing is every single usb1. 1 device that i plug into the new machine works perfectly - even the wireless keyboard and mouse that i was using with it! It only seems to damage usb2 devices!
The 500w psu that i was using is a raidmax one and works perfectly because the computer works fine and i can load windows and wireless and everything. Another weird thing was that when i used a crossover cable to connect it to my other machine to transfer files across - it locked up my other machine.computer specifications:
Q6600 g0 edition
Asus p5n-e sli 650i motherboard
Ocz ddr2 800mhz/pc2-6400 cl 4-4-4-15 platinum xtc (2gb)
Raidmax sagitta black/silver gaming case with side window - with 500w psu
Western digital wd5000aaks 500gb sata ii 7200rpm 16mb cache - oem
Complete with a pci gfx card (7300se - spare one i had lying round) and all the other extras. I built it and it ran fine - installed windows xp etc etc.

Usb Device Problems After Format Hard Drive
I recently formatted my hard drive and now when i plug my printer through usb it says the device has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it. In device manager it says unknown device and that there is no drivers installed but the drivers are installed. In the printer set up process it tells me to plug the device into usb port but i have already done this, i also tried it with the device unplugged then doing it when prompted to no avail.

Dump Usb Files To Hard Drive Automatically
I was wondering if there was a way to automatically dump the contents of a usb drive to a hard drive once it's plugged in. I do a lot of work on my usb drive and it would make my life a lot easier if there was a way that i could have the contents dumped to the hard drive automatically without any interaction.

No External Usb Hard Drive In My Computer Folder
Yesterday i connected an external usb hard drive to my computer (xp sp1, amd athlon processor) the icon that appears on the taskbar in the bottom right hand corner appeared to say it was connected. So i went into 'my computer' folder and there was no other drive there? I checked in device manger and everything was ok in there. I tried rebooting with it connected and still get the same problem. So i disconnected it and connected my card reader for my mobile phone and i get exactly the same problem with this. Nothing appears in my computer. Only a couple of weeks ago i was using the card reader fine, so i'm thinking it might be a setting in the computer somewhere. Has anyone got any ideas on what could be wrong?

When Will External Hard Drive Enclosures With Usb 3 Be Common ?
I'm considering buying an external hard drive enclosure. There don't seem to be many with usb 3 yet. When do people think enclosures with usb 3 will be commonly available? If it's going to be a while i won't wait, but i'd hate to buy one with usb 2 now and then have usb 3 models become available in a couple of months.

Usb External Hard Drive Not Fully Recognized By Xp
I have a hdd with an ide/usb converter to be used as an external usb hdd. It was working fine the couple of times i used it, but apparently something happened and now it is not fully recognized by xp. When i turn the hdd on, xp tells me new hardware found, then says it is a disc unit, then nothing happens. My pc does not show the disc, neither the explorer does it. I can not open device manager unless i turn the hdd off. I have un-installed/installed all usb controllers. Same problem. The above happens with my desktop. There is no problem using this usb external hdd in my notebook. Any idea what the problem is? How to solve it?

External Usb Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting Randomly
External usb hard drive keeps disconnecting randomly. I have a 500gb verbatim hard drive that i have connected to my toshiba laptop. After 20 minutes or so the drive randomly disconnects. I've tried changing the power options disabling the them for the usb setting to stop it from shutting off, but it doesn't help. When i plug the drive in and look under device manager i see the usb mass storage. I changed all the usb hub properties to never turn them off to save power. I've even tried this on my desktop computer and it does the same thing. I'm running it on windows 7 64 bit. I've searched numerous forums to look for a possible solution. I've also tried different usb cables and the problem continues. Please if anybody has solved this common problem let me know.

Can i connect an external usb hard drive for my laptop to xbox to watch video that is saved on the hard drive?
Answer:- you take usb cord from the external drive and plug it into one of the usb slots on the 360(assuming you meant 360 and not orginal xbox). Once its connected go to the video tab and the external hard drive should be recognized by your system. Just select the device you want and voila!

Usb External Hard Drive Problem After Reinstall Windows
I had recently formatted my comp. And reinstalled windows which went very well but when i went to plug in my dynex usb external hard drive that has a maxtor hardrive inside. The computer kept on asking me to format the hardrive. I really don't want to format my external hardrive cause i have lots of important documents on it plus it used to just recognize it no problem without any formatting. So if anyone could possible help me or give me some tips to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated i am sure it is probably some small setting that i may have not noticed.

Usb Port Not Working After Format Hard Drive & Reinstall Xp
I am currently usin' an ibm x40 laptop. Things have been workin' fine. Since i had too many craps on my comp, i decided to format my c: to reinstall xp (sp2). However, i was playin' games on my comp last week. My comp encountered a power shortage problem or watever problems along those lines, it rebooted itself all of a sudden. Since then, none of my 2 usb ports are workin'. To further clarify myself, i can tell that the computer detects the devices, includin' mouse, flash key and cd-rom, however, i can access none of these usb devices successfully. I tried to delete all the usb deivers from the device manager and let xp reload them, nothing seems to have changed. And i also checked my bios, usb ports are all enabled. I am wondering what is wrong with my computer. Do u guys have any clues what's goin' on or wat i should try to do to fix my computer.

Portable External Hard Drive Or Huge Flash Usb
I am looking to use either a portable external hdd or a flash usb (32gb or more) to run applications like portable photoshop, illustrator, winrar, vista, etc. I will also store video files, and other folders, etc, on the drive as well. But which one should i buy? Can u please link me to some good items?
- 1st priority is running applicationsd and using it on the go. - 2nd priority is storage space.

Copying Files From Internal Hard Drive To External Usb 2.0
About to start new build. Since present eide hd will not be available for transferring files to new eide hd, i'm thinking about copying files to external usb2. 0 hard drive, and then copying them to new eide hard drive when new build is up and running. The external usb drive will be used in the new build. I need to know if this is feasible and, if so, how do i do it? Do i just copy a file at a time?
Or do i need to establish folder for groups of files? The files are a mix of photos, music, and doc files. I do not want to foul this up and lose everything i have in the process. I tried this once before when i had to reinstall xp home and found subsequently that i could not access the files i had sent to floppies.
