Replies: 8 | Post Date: October 4th 2005 | User: Fuhzy Wuzzie | Forums: devhardware.comOk, i don't even know if you can see this from the printscreen, but it looks like my monitor is jacked up. If you notice, all of the text has grey anomalies around it, its almost like everything has a strange shadow. Can you see it?

Get Strange Characters During Post
I am writing this from safe mode, becuase safe mode (with networking) seems to work. But regular booting doesnt. As soon as i turn on the machine, i get garbled text, so i can haroly read it! It happens in windows (safe mode) all over, but even happens during post and when i enter the bios. I can hardly read anything. This happened all of a sudden, i dont get it. No change in hardware or software, no update. Things had been running fine up until yesterday, then boom! I get strange characters during post, and little pixelated dots everywhere in windows. I'm using a dual piii 1ghz with a quadro 750xgl (drivers 76 50, but i've tried with others too), winxp sp2. Device manager doesnt report anything wrong, i did a checkdisk, nothing wrong, i dont know what to do!

Strange Raid 0 Error
While hot swapping one archive drive for another, the intel matrix storage console said that an error occurred and to back up my data from the raid 0 array. I'm guessing the raid portion of the controller doesn't take kindly to drive swapping or i bumped the sata/power line. Ich10r
Ports 0-1 are the raid 0. The hot swapping occurred on port 2. The os boots fine, chkdsk seen nothing wrong and volume verification returned zero errors. So i set the second drive in the array back to normal.

Cannot Install Os, Strange Looping Restart
Upon install and startup it just turned itself off. Never a good sign -_- after a bit i worked out the chip was overheating due me putting too much thermal grease on. Though the temps went down the problem still remained, i still thought temps were a bit high (50c idle) and lo! And behold i was an idiot and had plugged the cpu fan into the wrong plug and it wasn't spinning fast enough >_<
With that fixed it did get further before it started restarting again. The symptoms are, i turn it on. Bios works fine everything is seen. It then starts to load the os (either vista 64 or xp pro) and at some stage it just restarts itself. Sometimes this happens right at the start, sometimes i get into the gui. But its never made it through. I took it into the pc repair shop today as i was at my wits end, they replaced the ram and gfxcard and took out the other misc pci cards and tried. Tried a different chip, thought it might be the bios, flashed it, tried again, and so on and so on with varying combos of my stuff and/or their stuff. And always it restarts itself. Tomorrow i'm going in to check up and see if they found anything, but has anyone ever come across a problem like this one?
They are pretty sure its not the ram, happens with their test ram. They are pretty sure its not the gfxcard it happens with their test card. The most likely candidates i was told were the chip and the mobo but it seemed to happen with their chip as well (but this may need further testing. )
The bios flash did help the mobo recognise the chip "better" but didnt solve the problem. Everything displays fine in the bios, temps are now normal, and everything is seen. When i left they were trying a new hdd in it.

Strange Computer Clicking / Freezing
My problem is that from time to time i will be in the middle of playing a game or just working on a report or surfing the internet and my computer will just freeze for 3-10 seconds. I then normally hear a distinct (single) "click" come from the computer and all is back to normal. When i'm in a game, normally what happens is my entire screen will freeze and the audio will just loop with whatever was just happening. I've checked most of my drivers and i believe they are all up-to-date. One thing that i thought of is that i configured all of my sata ports to be ahci, so they're all basically plug-n-play'ish. I do seem to hear the clicking from time to time and nothing will happen, but normally it happens just at the end of a freeze-up.system:-
Mobo: asus p6t
Processor: intel i7 920 2. 67ghz
Memory: corsair ddr3 2gb trichannel x 6 (12gb total)
Graphics: nvidia geforce gtx 285 1gb (x2 sli) (bfg ocx)
Hdd: 1. 5tb sata
Psu: 750w corsair
Os: windows 7 x64
I appreciate whatever advice i can get!

Randomly Rebooting And Strange Clicking Noises
My computer has gone crazy and it is driving me mad! It began with the computer randomly rebooting and strange clicking noises. I thought it was the power supply (it was a vt-300tatx). I replaced it with a suggested vt-400atx). Everything seemed to be fine for several weeks. My daughter installed the sims game on it and suddenly it started freezing up when it got to a certain point in the game, and then it started rebooting. I thought it was a problem with the os so i wiped c: and reformated it and tried to reinstalled windows 2000 professional, which is what i was running on it. Now nothing works right. Sometimes when i turn the computer on, the fan runs bu the computer doesn't boot. After flipping the off/on switch a couple of times it will boot. I can usually get it to the c: prompt, but sometimes when i try to run commands it freezes up. When ever i try to install windows i get errors. Windows 2000 professional: oe, 06 and od errors. Windows 98: file xxx. Xx corrupted, error 14, etc. , Always with a different file or else the system freezes up during installation of files. Same with 2000: freezes during file installation. Windows 95 (i even tried that) won't even start up. Sometimes, the system won't recognize the cd rom drive. I am at wits end. Most of the diagnostics i have will only run under windows, and i can't even install it. Most of microsofts db articles don't apply or you need windows installed to complete their suggested fixes. I ran memtest86 and the memory is ok. I even swapped out the memory card so that's not the problem. I tried reinstalling the mbr but nothing there. And all the registry diagnostics i have need windows to run. I am at wits end! Help! Anyone have any idea before i commit hari-kari?

Strange Noises When Move Mouse Across The Screen
I'm running vista and whenever i move my mouse across the screen, i can hear my 8800 ultra start to buzz and hum, without fail whenever i move my mouse it starts whirling a little, it's very annoying. Also if i scroll over the icons in my rocket dock, my hard drives in raid 0 start to squeal and make a squeaky grinding noise. The noise is baisically constant as i use my pc, the fans aren't loud, but i can't take the constant buzzing and grinding from my video card and hds anymore. Does anyone have any idea why or what is causing it?

Advent T100 Strange Problem Wont Start
I have a strange problem with the wife's advent t100 (all in one pc) about a week ago it started to not boot up, she would sometimes have to turn the power off at the socket and restart it a couple of times then it would be fine. Over the last few days it's got a lot worse and now it will not boot up whatsoever, the strange thing is though that the blue hard drive light on the front display lights up and flashes when its turned on and it will take a cddvd ect but no boot?
I've had a look inside and nothing seems unseated. I'm at a complete loss to work out whats killed the wife pc all of a sudden ;-). 1, when it did turn on sometimes after 10-20 attempts if you then used "restart my pc" via windows it always boots first time?
2, the cd/dvd makes a strange noise on attempted boot up almost like its trying to read a cddvd. 3, on the last successful boot i did a hard drive software diagnose and it came up no problems. I also did a complete restore using the original advent discs, all to no avail. 4, it has a remote control to switch on off, and that has no affect, i.e the blue hard drive light comes on but it still does not boot empty blank screen. I was thinking that it may be a dodgy internal psu?

Xonar Essence Stx Strange Buzz With Computer Off
I have a asus xonar essence stx hooked up to a pair of audioengine a2's via monster rca cables and a 12" jbl sub. When the computer is on, there is absolutely no noise from the speakers or sub. It is dead silent, such an awesome very low to no noise signal even with the volumes of all equipment at max. The issue is when i turn the computer off, instantly the speakers and sub emit a annoying buzz/hiss/hum like you would typically see in a bad ground-loop. My question is, why would this noise only happen when the computer is off?
All of the equipment, the a2 speakers (2-prong power cord), sub (2-prong power cord), and computer/monitors (all three prong), are plugged into the same ups and single wall outlet. What exactly changes in the ground/signal path from the xonar essence stx's rca signal path to go from a dead silent super clear signal while the computer is on to such a noisy racket when the computer is off? It does not make much sense. Anyone have any thoughts?

Com1 Port Printer - Print Strange Letters / Characters
I have a problem with a ticket printer conected to a com1 port. In windows it works fine but the problem is when i start the computer. Right after boot screen, when windows loads, the printer starts to print strange and senseless characters, something like? U0, 0. I've tested with several windows xp images, and they all have the same result. It prints a few lines, and then stops. After that, in windows, i can use the printer without any problem. Any idea?

Screen Goes Blank, Fans Slow Down, Hard Cd Drive Makes Strange Noises
My custom built pc recently started to act strangely. Sometimes when in normal use, the screen goes blank; fans slow down; hard cd drive makes strange noises. This usually happens then when i try to restart, the computer does even start up, just does it again. Because this happens almost instantly when i turn it on, i don't think its the ram, drives or graphics card. I suspect its my motherboard that causing this.computer specifications:
Msi k7n2 delta-l
Athlon 2700 t/bred b
Geforcefx 5900
Seagate barracuda 7200. 7

Replacing Dell Laptop Monitor With Sony Vaio Monitor
Can replace my dell laptop monitor with my spare sony viao monitor? My viao mother board is broken so wanted to use the monitor to replace the rather dull blurry one that came with my dell inspiron. Both monitors are 15" so it will fit no problem. But will it run properly and will i also need to replace the graphics card?

Disable Second Monitor While First Monitor Is In Fullscreen Mode
Is there an automated way to disable the second attached monitor whenever the first monitor goes into full-screen mode with an ati video card (hd 4870)? I have a few games that don't like my second monitor being attached and this would be better than having to always disable my second monitor.

Every time i boot my comp, the monitor never comes on, so i have to shutdown and boot it again and it works, however, in the last few days it wont come on at all, all the monitor will say is power saving mode. Also i just noticed that the lights and fan on the graphics card arent coming on.could this be a power issue? The psu is 600w.could the pcie slot be damaged?
Computer specifications:
The monitor is a lg flatron l1915s.amd 64 x2 dual core 4400+
1024mb corsair ram, msi k8n sli platinum mobo, bfg 6800gt, 250gb seagate baraccuda, dvd dl drive, floppy.

Monitor Turns Itself Off
I connect using a dvi connectors into my video card. Bassicaly what happens is my left monitor has zero problems its great. My 2nd one seems to turn itself off on it's own. I don't have to jiggle anything to fix this, just turn the monitor back on with the button, but this is getting very annoying. (Especially since the power button isn't easy to press, may not be able to tell by the link, but the button is behind the casing of the monitor, so you can't feel for the button you have to put your finger in the exact right spot on the case and push in. No clue who ever thought this was a good idea, i would have bought a different monitor if i knew about this before hand) i made 3 hypothesis:
1) a cable is loose (not the case, i ensured everything is connected well, and it still happens)
2) the power button is loose, and small vibrations on the desk are triggering it to go off. (Don't think this is the case because my monitor has never turned itself on)
I'm still under the manufacturer warranty, though i'm afraid to send it in because 1- i have to go that time with 1 monitor, which would be impossible for me. And 2- i hate getting refurbished stuff. Espeically when i pay money for something new. I'm trying to figure out what else i might look for that would cause my monitor to turn itself off.

Monitor Only Has 16 Colors
My roommate bought a dell latitude c640, and everything seems ok except for one major thing. The monitor only has 16 colors! And when i went to the control panel and the display option, it gave me the grand option of changing it to 16 colors? I am in the twilight zone, in an episode where the graphics look crappy and i'm being played by a young rob lowe.

No Picture On The Monitor
I have an ibm netvista 6579-pdg with nvidia tnt2 16mb graphics, 256mb ram, 866mhz pentium 3, 30gb hard disk. And when i switch my pc on, just the lights on the actual pc turn on, i get no picture on the monitor which i can confirm does in fact work. It has the two lights (power and processing light) on forever, i left it like this overnight and it was the same when i got up in the morning. The bios does not even initialize, its just a blank screen when i turn the computer on. If you have any ideas to what the problem is then please let me know.

No Monitor Signal
A month ago i put together a new computer, asus a8v delux, amd athlon64 3200+, 1gb kingston ddr400(dual channel), ati radeon x800pro(agp) with a 21" dell p1130. This worked beautifully. It worked beautifully after i packed the whole thing up and went to my parents for two weeks over christmas. It didn't work when i packed it up, and came back to my place. The computer powers up and beeps once. The monitor works on another computer. No other monitor works on this computer. I have: reseated the agp graphics card, reset the system bios. The cpu and ram both feel secure, though i have not removed and reseated them yet. The sata harddrive seems fine. I don't know what else to do, and i'm very tired, so i hope one of you has an answer.

Monitor Repair
I have a 21" crt that is starting to kick the bucket. I was wondering if it's even worth repairing. It is a great monitor and would hate to have to throw it out. It seems that after 20 or so minutes (after it warms up) that the picture starts to bend in, then break, then come back, a little after that it will just go black. I turn it off for a few minutes the picture comes back. But then it will break again? So i'm wondering if there is any thing i can do to possible bring it back to life. I've already bought a new monitor 20" lcd flat panel. But would love to be able to set these up as dual monitors?

Monitor Pick Up
So far i did all my stuff on my laptop until its mother board splited up (toshiba satellite 1805 s203). And now i'm going to invest desctop. The only question i got is what kinda monitor to use?
Lcd or crt?
I've heard that new lcd generation is quite good for graphics, isn't it? Or should i buy crt after all? So could you explain which type is the best? Also could you point the manufacturer and model name of it please?

Green Monitor
I have this vivitron monitor that has been giving me problems for years. About 4 years ago it started to flicker every now and then. Eventually the flickering got so bad it would simply turn off the picture. This all was accompanied by a lot of static discharge sound from within the monitor. One day i opened it up, cleaned off all the dust, and it seemed to work ok for awhile. Within the past year, i am still able to stop the flickering by cleaning, but now the screen has also started to turn green. At first i could fix it by giving the monitor a heavy tap, and it would revert to normal colors. Eventually that was not enough though. Now i have to open it up and tap on the curcuit board at the back of the tube. This is only a temporary solution as it reverts to green hue screen sometimes when i turn it off then back on, sometimes just out of nowhere. Is there anythinig i can do to fix this? I am an electrical engineer so i am not afraid to work on it, but i am not versed with monitors.
