External Hard Drive Spins But Doesn't Recognize

The drive is a western digital elements wde1u5000n 500gb. The problem is that the drive turns on and spins, but windows never says installing new hardware or anything like that. After googling:
I've tried connecting it on 3 different pc's all running windows xp sp3. It's not the usb cable. Cannot see it in disk managment. Disabling 1394 port doesn't make it work. Tried to connect it into a wall outlet instead of a surge protector as well. Think it's just dead?

Xp Install Wont Recognize My Backup External Hard Drive

I know i have to assign the external hard drive a drive letter but i don't know how to do it without formatting the drive. I obviously don't want to format the drive because it has all of my backup information from my old hard drive. The hdd is a western digital oem 320gb ide put into an external enclosure. The external enclosure worked perfect on old computer, but it was formatted on it. When i turn on the hdd my computer recognizes it as a usb mas storage device, it just doesn't assign it a drive letter. When i run western digital's data lifeguard tools it wants to set up the drive and make it additional storage, but it also must partition and format the drive before it can do so. For some reason i assumed this would be easy, i almost feel like im taking crazy pills. When i go into windows disk management all i can do is partition and format the drive, maybe im missing something.

Computer Doesn't Recognize External Hard Drive

I have a basic wd external hard drive. Suddenly, when i plug it into my computer, the computer isn't recognizing it. I also plugged it into my husband's computer. Not recognized. It was working about 3 days ago. Anywhere i can find this, other than my computer? I am not that computer literate, but i know that there is a problem here. Has my 4 year olds' pics on it since they were born (and everything from my hp laptop that died after only 2 years).

Ps3 Slim Won't Recognize Wd Usb 3.0 External Hard Drive

I've been trying for the last 3 days to connect my western digital mybook usb 3. 0 1tb external drive to my ps3 slim to no avail. I've went through *** and back so i wonder if it is even possible? Is the ps3 capable of backward compatibility with this drive?

I know many people have connected a 2. 0 usb external to a ps3 but i've googled and asked tech friends, game owners, sony ps3, wd, seagate, buffalo, adata. You name it. Yes of course i formatted the whole drive(partition)935gb into fat32 using various software programs; swissknife, acronis, partition wizard. They all show after completion that the drive was formatted to fat32. I even tried making folders; video, pictures, music and still no go. Is there something i'm missing? Is it a chipset issue or a host controller defecit on ps3's end? The funny thing is it will read my fat32 supertalent usb 3. 0 16gb flash drive so i dont know if the flash turns into a 2. 0 usb read that ps3 recognizes but it can't do that with the build of an external drive, maybe bc it's just a wd black or blue cavier sata with a controller laned into 3. 0 usb ports inserted into a tower. If anyone has had success with any of the usb 3. 0 external drives please let me know the amazing fix. I even thought there may be a difference with the usb 2. 0 and 3. 0 cables and iwould have to switch to a 2. 0 to connect to ps3. I'm not leaving any stone unturned. I contacted sony ps3 and they escalated it for the next meeting, so they say. Wd has no clue and will look into it. Seagate tech support told me right away it isn't supported but didn't say why bc i had to convey questions to the girl on the phone. Buffalo didn't know, so i contacted various retailers in canada that sell the drives to see if there was any feedback from customers or tech savvy employees. No one seems to know. Yet this could be a simple fix or it might be impossible with ps3's current setup and may be fixed if/when ps4 is released. I doubt a patch or firmware can fix this but you never know. It would be interesting to see if the ps3 will recognize a ssd in a usb 3. 0 enclosure. I have a ocz agility 2 ssd new and may try this b4 i install it with my original intention as internal for windows 7 64 bit os and media. I also bought an asus u3s6 card that comes with 2 usb 3. 0 ports. I have many people working on this even the main manager at canada computers as he is a ps3 fan and is very interested himself which is good because the more brains that inquire and trouble shoot the better the chance of a solution either soon or in the future. So once again, thanks for anyone that has had success with these drives and i'll be sure to post any information i receive.

Hard Drive Spins Down

I just got a new motherboard/processor, so i'm combining my parts to make one very nice computer. Except i'm having one issue with the hard drive: i have a 300gb seagate (16mb cache) set as drive c: with xp mce 2005 installed on it. For some reason this drive will spin down after about 10 minutes of inactivity even though i have the power options in the windows control panel set to "never" to turn off the drives. Then after it has spun down, if i move the mouse or something, it shows me the hourglass cursor for a second or two while i hear the drive spin back up. I really don't want the drive to be turning off and on all the time, but i can't seem to figure it out. As long as i'm doing something, the drive never turns off, but it only spins down when idle for like 5 minutes. I know it's not good for the drive to keep turning on and off every time i take a break or get a phone call. The drive is brand new, and i used it for a short time with a previous motherboard with xp home, never noticed this issue. My new motherboard is a msi ms-7184. I don't see any options in bios that would affect this. Anything i should look for there?

I have another hard drive set as a slave (seagate 200gb, 2mb cache). Interestingly, the hdd power down is disabled, but it can also be set from 1-15 minutes anything i can do here? Or is it really not that bad for the drive to be spinning up and down like this?

Hard Drive Spins Up, Freezes Pc

I just installed windows 7, lost all my old settings. But i notice something really annoying that happens. When i start up a program, or open a folder, windows shows the loading icon, i can't click on anything, then i hear my hard drive spin up. 2 seconds later, my computer is back to normal. Can i prevent my hard drive from stopping, so that i don't get that few second delay every now and then? Happens about once an hour or so. Annoying!

Imac Doesn't Recognize Usb External Hard Disk

My new imac doesn't recognize my external hard disk (usb connection), which i used for. ? I am a new apple owner and user, just converted from an ms based pc environment. The drive is a western digital, on which i have stored all my pictures, music (itunes ironically) and ms office documents. I thought - or should i say hoped - it was just "plug and play", but this is clearly not the case. The imac does not recognize the drive. I can see that the drive is getting power from the usb, but i can also hear that it is not running properly (sounds like it is try to initialize again and again) and it does not show up in the devices menu. I have tried a couple of flash discs in the same usb port and they work. I have also tried to connect the external disk to different usb port, but to no avail. What do i do?

Computer Wont Recognize Second Hard Drive

I am trying to install a second har drive in my old computer to stream mp3's from but the bios won't recognize it. It is an old 400mhz celeron machine the har drive is a 40gig western drive ide. When i run the tools that came with the drive it says that the bios isn't controlling it and i have tried all kinds of settings in the bios and they don't help. I have also checked the jumpers and they are set right. I have a western drive 20gig as the main drive and i just want to use the second for my files. I want to use this computer as a file server. Is the motherboard to old to recognize a drive that large? Also if i buy an ide control card will that fix my problem?

Cd Drive Spins Some Disks But Not Others

Well i have an odd problem which i think could be from me dropping my laptop once. It was about a 3 feet drop. Before the drop i never had this problem. Basically my cd drive plays certain dvds and cds fine, but other ones either fail to spin after trying to get going, or the drive makes a loud humming type of sound as if the cd has friction against the top or something. I am assuming this is a hardware problem, although it is strange that certain disks spin/work while others fail. Does anyone have any idea why this is? Please advise as i am debating or not whether to send my lap top back to sony for repair or not.

External Hard Drive Or Internal With Drive Enclosure

I need space to store my downloaded videos that have yet to be edited. Dilemma is whether i should shell out $270 to get a 300gs external drive or $150. 00 for a 300gs internal and then use a drive enclosure?. How reliable are these enclosures? Is there any difference in the speed between the internal and external drives? What about failure rates? Would a internal drive used with a enclosure have a higher rate of failure than a external?

External Hard Drive Issue

I have an external 500gb free agent hard drive. Was plugged into sony while i attempted vaio recovery. Vaio recovery failed. I unplugged the external drive and the recovery ran fine. Now i plug in drive and it does not auto detect on any machine, but if you go to disk management it shows but gives you no options to format, assign drive letter etc. Only shows help option. Does list drive and free space so i know data is on there. One thing i noticed was that it does say eisa configured. We ripped the enclosure apart to reveal a sata drive, plugged in direct, same thing. I need to get the data off this drive. If i cant get the data, how do i at least format to make it recognizable again?

External Hard Drive Not Responding

I just recently got a 1tb western digital hard drive and have been using it with a sata to usb adapter for external storage. It was working fine for a few days, but now, the drive will not show up at all when plugged in. When it is plugged in, windows will not respond, most system functions fail to run even though i can still use the system outside of those functions. At first, i was still able to see the partition drive letter listed in my computers, but it listed no size for the drive, and i couldn't explore it. I tried running a chkdsk command and it did make some repairs, but it couldn't complete part of the repair because it claiming there wasn't sufficient space to do so. I have moved a lot of data to the drive, but i know it wasn't even half full. Ive been trying various apps to retrieve the data, but so far nothing can see the drive to do anything with it. My latest attempt is getdataback. When the app tries to scan for drives, i get an error saying: windows - drive not ready / exception processing message. Any other suggestions as to what i should try next? Any other good apps for trying to either retrieve the data or repair the drive issue? I will try to hook the drive up internally next, but i did trying hooking it up to esata, but that didn't allow access either.

External Hard Drive Problem

I read a lot on here but ive never posts but ive got a bit of a problem with my external drive. So here's whats up i go to reformat my primary drive with windows 7 rc i back up all my desktop stuff to my external and then when i get it back up and going reformatted all i can view is the last folder i had up being the one with all my desktop back up. Ive plugged it into about 4 different computers now and nothing has worked. About a week or so ago i went to view my music and it was all in some weird septic looking font i closed my explore and re-opened it and every thing was fine. Ive ran check disk on it and seems to be working fine, except for the fact i can see all of my files just the ones that are in my desktop back up folder. So if any one knows what this problem is or has had it before and could point me in a right directions to take in fixing it if it can be fixed that would be awesome.

External Hard Drive Error

Pc: dell dimension 4400
Os: win xp home
External hard drive: maxtor one touch 250

Bought in march, worked fine until two weeks ago. I turned off my computer for the night, turned it on in the morning and received these messages:

**Not accessible, the parameter is incorrect**
**The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error. **

The drive icon does show, the drivers , etc are all there and windows tells me they are operating fine. I have already spoken with maxtor and they were absolutely of no help. Other than wanting to reformat the hard drive . Which is out of the question. (I have 5 years of work stored in that hd, personal, legal and business) and must find a way to retrieve it. (Will not make personal comments about their support or policies. ) Grrrrrrrr. I have spoken to teckie types and tried several suggestions. None helped so far. I'm desperate, and would appreciate any expertise. And, if someone knows of an inexpensive recovery program. The data is all there, it was not deleted. I simply can not unlock the door.

Psu For External Hard Drive

I have just bought a "usb2. 0 to ide" dongle to convert my ide hard drive into an external one. Unfortunately, the unit doesn't have a power supply. I know that hd needs a 12v power source. I actually have a 12v adapter from my old cd player with output ( 12v output , 0. 38 amp) however, i don't know how to wire the 2 lines (12v line and ground line) from the adapter to 4-pin molex connector. I really appreciate any help because my 20 bucks dongle will be useless without a power supply.

Formatting External Hard Drive

Alright so, i have a backup drive that i've been using for around six months now. It is a wd smartware mybook essential hard drive. Somehow. It managed to un-format itself. I've been trying to format my f: drive myself, but every time i try to the computer says that if i try to do a "ntfs" format, i will lose everything on my hard drive. I want to know if there is any possible way to fix this problem by formatting it and not losing my data on the external or just completely fixing this problem. I've asked around (as you can see, i'm not very computer savy) and everyone says to back up the things on the hard drive and just format it. Well, i can't. I cannot even open up the files on my external hard drive until it is formatted. The reason that these files are so important to me is because i store all of my pictures, music, movies and documents my external. My computer does not have enough memory, so i store them onto the external. Every picture i've ever taken for about the last five years is on this hard drive, and i'm a huge memory person. Let's just say if these pictures are lost. I will be very upset.

External Hard Drive, Encrypted Mp3s

I have 14k mp3s on an external hard drive, that i can't copy to my desktop's maxtor - external 200gb hd; model # ta200e0038171. Files were dragged from desktop hard-drive to maxtor drive under my computer. Files copied fine - no problems. On the maxtor drive; the music folder font is blue; when you open the folder, the artist folders font is green, mp3 files font is green. When i right click on a mp3 file and select properties then advanced, i am unable to unchecked the encrypt box (shaded out but checked). When i try to play the mp3 files from the maxtor drive, windows media player opens up and give me this message(version 11): 'windows media player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct. '

I have tried to copy/paste the music folder to my desktop hard-drive and i get the error message: "destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action", my options are to try again, skip, or cancel. I press try again 15, 000 times and the same screen comes back up. I have tried to change the ownership of files from "s-1-5-21-1417001333-813497703-1343024091-1003' to 'andmitch-pc' (mycomputer's name). Then i tried to play the music - no dice. I have tried coping to vista, xp pro. A laptop and a couple different desktops. What should i do?, The fate of 14, 000 mp3s rest in your hands!
