Pc Takes A Very Long Time To Complete The Boot Up Sequence
Replies: 5 | Post Date: February 7th, 2007, 02:57 PM | User: Seanf | Forums: forums.devshed.comMy daughter has a dell inspiron 1150 laptop which seems to have some sort of memory conflict of sort. It takes a very long time to complete the boot-up sequence and then, for no apparent reason simply slow down to a halt when opening a program (microsoft word, for example). The fan starts working overtime and processing performance slows to a halt. The task manager shows that most of the resources are being consumed by the system idle process. I have run spybot and adaware and mcafee anti-virus and nothing one turns turns up any problems. Any suggestions as to where to look next?

Pc Takes A Long Time To Boot Up
First: it takes from 20 minutes to 2 hours to boot up, i don't see anything in the monitor, but the fan in the power supply spins and the fan at top of the processor also works, only the red light of the hard disk turns on. I have tried with another hard disk that works fine in another pc, and it's the same, it takes forever to boot up. I have replace the power supply from 250 to 450 and i still have that problem. Second: after waiting that long for the pc to boot up, the cpu clock speed reads 733 mhz instead of 1700. I reset the jumper in the motherboard, to get the correct speed, but i have to do this everytime the computer has been off for a while. Are the two problems related? Is the motherboard bad? Once the pc boot ups, it works fine.

Windows Takes A Really Long Time To Start Up
Windows takes a really long time to start up, and when it does, it doesn't last long before the computer restarts. I went into the bios, and the cpu is running at 38*c, so it shouldn't be that. Also, i have a 500watt psu, so that shouldn't be it either, what's the problem?

Bios Takes Long Time To Identify Dvd Drives On Ide 2
I recently updated my pc - new ram, new sata hard drive and a new case. I've put everything in the case and after a few issues, i got it running. I do seem to have some troubles with my cd/dvd drives though and i was wondering if anyone could give me some help. First, here's a rough overview of the important bits:
Msi 865pe neo2 pfisr motherboard
120gb ide hd - on ide1 as master
160gb sata hd - on "ide3"
1 dvd-rom drive - on ide2 as master
1 dvd writer - on id2 as slave
The trouble is that when i have the above setup, the bios takes a long time trying to identify my dvd drives on ide2. It must eventually give up and believe nothing is there. The hd's are fine, just no dvd drives. Now if i unplug the slave drive on ide2, the master drive works fine. I haven't tried putting the slave dvd as a master yet but i'll try that as the first thing when i get back. Is it possible to something blow a drive or ground it to my case? Something stupid like that?
Now lets say i get home and both dvd drives work separately but not together. Does anyone have any clue what else it could be? I've just moved the drives from one case to another so the jumpers are correct etc. The cable is also fine (tried it with a spare - same problem).

Computer Freezes On Boot - Long Time To Load Windows
I was having issues with a game of mine hard locking my pc. The only way to get out of it was to hold down the power button and force the pc to power down, then boot back up. Trying to trouble shoot the game, this happened several times. Then, it started freezing on the memory test. It's not really freezing, though - if i leave it sit for a very long time ( 5 to ten minutes ), it will eventually boot into windows. Any ideas?

Cd Rom Boot Sequence Problem
I have pc configured to boot in the following sequence:
1. Cdrom
2. Floppy
3. Hard disk - ide-0. Now, i think my cdrom is screwed up. It boots sometimes with a boot cd and sometimes does not. I want to use the cdrw device that i have added on to the pc. How do i do that? When i change the boot sequence in the bios, it just skips it and goes directly to the floppy and hdd. The options that are available for first boot are:
1. Disabled
2. Ide0
3. Ide1
4. Ide2
5. Ide3
6. Floppy
7. Armd-fdd
8. Armd-hdd
9. Cdrom
10. Scsi
11.network
What should be my first to fourth boot devices if i need to boot from the cdrw? (Fyi - the 2nd and 3rd boot devices are floppy and hard disk respectively. The fourth device is disabled).

Copying Live Image To Hard Drive Takes Too Long
I lost gnome desktop of fc13beta so i have to re-install it on my desktop pc. Did all partitioning and formatting in advance via gparted live cd. I set up a 500 mb boot partition (ext3) for grub, a 14 gb root partition (ext4) and a 15 gb home partition (ext4). During installation, copying live image to the hard drive initially was fast but then the installation seems to stop 3/4 of the way through and everything is now frozen. I am waiting for installation to complete. By the way, i just saw an orange icon on the top bar but i cannot know what it says because the mouse is frozen at the moment. Please help me! Installation of fc used to be easy. This is the third time this evening i am having to re-install fc13 beta.

Scrolling Takes Much Time In Windows Explorer
Most notably on web pages, scrolling takes forever. One tick of my scroll wheel will take 3 seconds or more for a web page to refresh in the new position. It also happens when scrolling through windows explorer and when i open my start button > all programs menu. I havent noticed it on much else but i havent tried doing much else program-wise. I have run many instances of different web based avs thinking it was a virus. Kasperky online, trend micro house call and dr web cureit. All have come back clean so far. Have also run ad aware and spybot s&d with negative results. Tried a hijack this log on the auto parse page and it also returned clean. What else can i do to find a resolution to this?

Pc Hangs And Takes 15 Minutes To Boot
Yesterday i formatted my pc, so i could add a smaller system drive, and then use 3 ide hdd's and 1 dvd-rw. Heres the setup i did:
Primary ide master - system drive
Primary ide slave - applications drive (empty)
Secondary ide master - docs drive (half full/half empty, up2u)
Secondary ide slave - dvd-rw
First boot from format, everything seemed snappy and fast, no problems. I started installing a few drivers, for nothing major, other than the nvidia hardware firewall on my dfi lanparty mb, and the basic mb drivers. Upon a required reboot, the machine now takes an immense 15 minutes to boot.

No Complete Boot, No Beep, Or Monitor Signal
The symptoms for my pc are as follows:
1. Pc receives power (as indicated by fan and powersupply light)
2. Pc does not output signal to monitor (verified functioning monitor and cable). 3. Analog, laser-mouse does not receive power consistently from pc. Laser-light turns on for a fraction of a second upon connecting the mouse to the pc, but then remains off after the mouse is firmly fixed into analog mouse-port. 4. Usb, laser-mouse does receive power from pc when plugged into usb port. 5. Pc does not make any beeping sounds whatsoever upon attempted boot. My request: please advise as to what troubleshooting methods i could use. Do these clues provide any insight into what may be wrong with the pc already?

Long Boot Times With Dvd Drive
My machine takes very long to boot. It sits @ that windows-knight-rider screen and the blue line is crossing about 10-12 times before anything happens. Yesterday i had to disconnect my dvd to connect my reserve hdd and see. It boots after 3 or 4 times of that line passing. Is that coz i got a bad driver or bad firmware there. Don't know if driver makes difference coz i think windows got 1 generic and it don't affect my secondary dvd drive. Any suggestions?

Excessive Computer Boot Time
I'm a certified computer technician. I'm working on my pals computer, and for the life of me i have never had such an slow boot. I did disk cleanup, followed by a defrag (which took almost a full day). In the four or so years this computer has existed i don't think it has once been defraged or cleaned up but anyways i also went into msconfig and got rid of all startup processed except the ones necessary for startup (obviously). This is a duo core (1. 66 per core) computer with 1gb ram. I figure it may be the ram however, i just checking here to see if anyone else has any ideas how i could speed up the boot, the bios is default, everything checks out okay. So disk cleanup followed by defrag and then msconfig. What did i miss? It's windows xp, so it's odd that it takes like 4 minutes to boot (even with 1gb ram).

Hard Drive Is Not Detected On Boot Up Half The Time
So i bought one of those new 2tb wd hard drives, and when i start my computer the drive is generally not recognized in the bios the first time. The bios hangs at the sata port the drive is in for ~20 seconds then says none. Once i reset my pc once or twice the drive shows up like normal, with no issues. Other than this the drive works perfectly. I'm a bit skeptical of these drives since my first two attempts were doa; is this the sign of a faulty drive or does anyone have ideas as to the cause? I have of course checked the cables.

Pc Wont Boot, Fans Spin Up For A Brief Time Then Quit
I'm hoping someone might have some thoughts on what to do. My system wont boot. I hit the power button, and then the psu, cpu, chipset, and case fans spin up, but a second after spinning up the fans stop and the boot ends. The led power light on the motherboard stays illuminated the whole time. If i unplug the psu or turn the power switch off and then back on then i can press the power button and get the same brief spin up. If i hold down the power button for 10 seconds and then press the power button it will then perform this brief spin up. If i dont do any of these things i can keep pressing the power button and nothing happens. I've unplugged all the drives and nothing changes. I pulled the cmos batter and verified good amps from it. Prior to this boot issue i had some problems with a new (feb 2008) wd caviar drive i was using to store media (not the os drive). Windows reported it as having too many disk errors so it dropped it from sata 3. 0 to 1. 5. Also it had a few ntfs errors that required running checkdisk. And i had some bsods. After one crash on restart bios reported a smart error. I ran wds drive tools on the drive and it reported no errors with the drive and the drive worked fine after that error. Also, my system disk access on both os and media drive have seemed to degraded recently. This is alot of info but i'm hoping it might be of help in diagnosing the problem. My thoughts are motherboard or psu. I think i should get a new psu and see if that works. If that doesn't work i figured i'd replace the motherboard. But i found out that socket 939 is dead. That being the case if it is not the psu i'd build a new pc but have also considered at the same time fixing this pc as a backup (i'm really hurting business wise not having my pc). I dont want to spend alot money if i have to fix this rig and dont need sizzling performance. Any recommendations on a new, relatively inexpensive mobo, cpu, and memory setup to replace my existing components? Again, i'd also be building a new pc for higher performance but i would want decent performance. And i should add i'm not a gamer. I'm a programmer using my pc to run lots of apps, programming and graphic design software .

Keyboard Led Lights Started Blinking In Sequence
My keyboard and mouse quit working, and the led lights on the board started blinking in sequence: num-cap-scr and back. I tried another keyboard and the same thing happened. Of course, i can't shut down or type, or anything. Has the port gone bad? Is this a motherboard issue?

From Time To Time Computer Freezes
I need help diagnosing what i believe is a hardware problem, since it happens with windows and linux. From time to time my computer freezes. I cannot move the mouse pointer and there is no reaction when i press a key on the keyboard. There is no bluescreen or any other error message. Also, it is not predicatble when the computer freezes. Sometimes i can work for hours without any problems and sometimes it freezes after 5 minutes. Generally, i noticed that it freezes earlier when i use windows instead of linux. Any idea what could be the problem or what i could do to diagnose it?

Error: Format Could Not Complete
I got a cheap 250gb hdd, western digital + sata card (altogether it cost me less than a 250gb ide). The card is a silicon image 3112a, it doesn't seem to have any trouble, and i got the latest drivers for it just to be sure. I have this strange problem, i try to format the drive with ntfs, and everytime i try it reports back with an error, i've tried various cloning/partitioning utilities (pqmagic, gdisk, standard format commands) all of them report an error "format could not complete" etc. Here's the funny thing: fat32 works fine, i can format a fat32 drive up to 199. Something gb. At the moment it's still in fat32 format, and i've done read speed tests, and they're fine. But for some reason i can't make it ntfs, even when i try the 'convert g:/fs:ntfs' command in dos it reports errors, needless to say, it's p*ssing me right off. My o/s is xp service pack 2, and i've had drives over 200gb in my pc before without any problems, it's just this drive, maybe its a physical hardware issue, disc sectors?

Reboots When Shutdown Is Complete
When i go to shutdown on my comp it goes to shutdown then as it has finished shutting down it automatically reboots. Have tried unchecking automatic restart in system properties to no avail, have heard that a new graphics card could be a prob but not too sure about that.

Complete Headphone System
Need complete headphone system for games, music, movies, everything. My sound-card is giving me nothing but trouble (static in games, but not (to my knowledge) in anything else). The sound sucks anyway. For a while i used on-board optical to the headphone output of my receiver, but that doesn't allow for positional audio - still, that's the best sounding it's ever been. If i need separate solutions for music and games, that's fine, but i need to know. I currently have a pair of sennheiser hd595s, and plan to get a pair of hd600s or hd650s (opinions?). For music, i want good, accurate sound. I would like some closed phones as well, for games. Maybe some audio-technica ath-a700s. For games, i'm more interested in crisp, powerful sound. It might be nice to have a set of speakers as well, but it's not a priority. I'm looking for suggestions for products (headphones, amps, dacs, soundcards, speakers, etc. ) That would suit me, as well as suggestions for what programs and settings to use to ensure the most true-to-the-source listening experience.

Windows Takes 8 Hours To Install
My friend's amd athlon xp 1100+ on a k7s5a pro rev 5. 0 mobo is taking forever to install windows. I threw in an extra 256 ram to make it 512 ram. I bought a new hard drive and it is still taking forever to install windows xp. Should i just tell him to get a new mobo and proc? Or should i just replace the proc?

Computer Takes 6, 7 Minutes To Open
My monitor that came with my win98 dell computer, takes now about 6 or 7 minutes to open. I upgraded to winxp, it now takes about about 4 or 5 minutes. Someone suggested to test and find out if it's the monitor or the computer. I borrowed a laptop but didn't know how to do it. A kind person suggested the following:
"Right click on the screen, choose properties/settings/advanced, look for your graphic card or video card then you should see the 2 icons for the 2 monitors. Switch over to the main monitor from there by clicking on the monitor icon at the rear of the two and dragging it to the front. " I followed the above but didn't see any "graphic card or video card" so i'm stuck now.

Pata Hdd Complete Failure
First my new system dies, and then my old system decides to go and kill itself aswell. Ok, this time its an old pata hdd that something went wrong with (i did this to it). What happend? Well, i had a nasty virus and had to get a real "tool" for the job. A program that use dod* method to erase everything from the harddrive. Let's just say something went wrong on the way, and now it's competely unreadable. So i got my hands on some seagate tools, and i really don't have a clue what to do with it. There is something so wrong it can't update the mbr of the drive. Shall i call it even and throw it away, or is there anything i can do?

Computer Freezes ( Will Not Complete Post )
During the post, the computer makes a single beep(that is normal), it checks the video and memory, then the following:
Award modular bios v4. 51pg, an energy star ally
Copyright @1984-98, award software, inc. Asus p2b bios revision 1012
Pentium iii 450mhz processor
Memory test : 524288k ok
Award plug and play bios extension v1. 0a(this is the point where my computer freezes and goes no further, i can't even boot from a floppy). I have tried various memory configurations and they all seem to detect ok. This same problem occurred on a asus p299 motherboard. I have tried installing a different cd rom, 3 1/2 floppy, etc. The only thing i haven't tried is a new cpu and/or hard drive (10gb fujitsu with win xp home installed). Twice the computer has gone further and actually booted up and acts normal, but 95% of the time it won't even boot! What should i replace next? It seems like it is a controller problem!
