Computer Keeps Shutting Off After Few Minutes
Replies: 8 | Post Date: 09-17-2007, 01:27 PM | User: Bona Fide | Forums: hardforum.comMy computer was working fine yesterday, all day, and now i can't have it on for more than 10 minutes without it randomly shutting down. It's not a problem with the wall socket because my monitor stays on the whole time, so i figure it's a problem with the tower. Here's what i've done since last night:
1. Put the side panel back on. 2. Moved it to my dorm room. I haven't checked for any loose connections, but that could be it. I figure either one/some of the connections is just barely hanging in, or one of the parts is overheating. That could be because either a heatsink misaligned in transit to my dorm or the side panel is cutting off ventilation.

Computer Takes 6, 7 Minutes To Open
My monitor that came with my win98 dell computer, takes now about 6 or 7 minutes to open. I upgraded to winxp, it now takes about about 4 or 5 minutes. Someone suggested to test and find out if it's the monitor or the computer. I borrowed a laptop but didn't know how to do it. A kind person suggested the following:
"Right click on the screen, choose properties/settings/advanced, look for your graphic card or video card then you should see the 2 icons for the 2 monitors. Switch over to the main monitor from there by clicking on the monitor icon at the rear of the two and dragging it to the front. " I followed the above but didn't see any "graphic card or video card" so i'm stuck now.

Computer Locking Up Minutes After Starting
I'd been having a problem with crashing to blue screen and getting the error of "irql is not less or equal to" for about a year. Now for the past 3 days my computer has started completely freezing either as soon as my desktop shows or 10-15min after startup. The only major change i've done is adding a second hard drive last weekend. But as stated, i didn't start having this problem till about 3 days ago, so i'm pretty sure it isn't the additional hard drive i added. Any help is appreciated. At this point i'm thinking that my only option is to just reformat.

Computer Shutting Down
A couple weeks ago, i decided to upgrade my pc case. I got an nzxt trinity case with 400w psu, and upgraded to 2gb of new ram at the same time. Prior to doing this, my computer was working fine, and i frequently played battlefield 2 for hours on end with no problem. I moved all the hardware over to the new case, and put the temperature probe in between the cpu and the heatsink and installed the new ram. I did noticed that when i mounted the atx mobo, it needed to flex a bit when i was screwing it down. It seemed like the case had a bit of an "oil can" effect on it, causing the mobo to flex about 1/8" in height when tightened down. I don't know if that could be a problem but thought it was worth mentioning. So, after getting everything set up, i had problems with the computer shutting down while playing bf2, and even while doing things like photo editing. I then found out that putting the temp probe between the cpu and heatsink was a bad idea, so i moved it. I continued to have problems with the pc shutting off. So then i thought it was either the ram or the psu, so i put the old ram back in problem continued. So, yesterday i bought a brand new antec psu and got it installed today. I got everything hooked up, plugged in, started it up and did my test - played bf2. It lasted about 4 minutes until the pc shut off. I double checked the heatsink on the cpu and it is seating firmly. So, i've put the old ram back in, and put in a different psu, problem persists. I have plenty of cooling, 120mm fan in the front, 120mm fan in the rear, 80mm fan on the side, 80mm fan on the cpu, and after the shutdown, just to check, i was able to touch the heatsink on the cpu and it was just moderately warm. What the *** is going on?

Computer Keeps Shutting Off
I started playing fallout 3 on pc, it was running fine, but eventually it would crash, and shut down my entire computer 10-15 minutes into a new session. I thought it might be caused by fallout 3 itself, but this has since happened with a variety of other games (young and old), so it's not a problem exclusive to fallout 3. What hardware would have the capability of shutting down my machine completely during a crash? My first assumption is that the power supply is getting taxed more during gaming, and can't handle the load, in which case i just need a new power supply. I also can see how this might be caused by the video card overheating and forcing a hard shutdown. I wanted to see if anyone here might have a better grasp of what could cause a computer to completely shutdown. If it's merely a system setting in windows that protects hardware, i can disable that feature, although i expect it to be either the vid card or power supply.amd x2 4200+
Windows xp pro
2gb ram
Ati radeon 2600hd 512mb
400w power supply (likely the issue)

Computer Keeps Shutting Down Without Warning
I am running a pentium 4 1. 8ghz, 512 mb ram with windows xp. The computer works fine until i try to run an antivirus software or try to defrag the hdd. Then the computer shuts down without warning, only the power light on the front of the case and the num lock light on the keyboard stays on. It will not reboot normally. I have to remove all power, wait for 10 seconds for these lights to go off, only then can i reboot. Both cooling fans are clean and running well. There is no real overheating issue. The mobo is ibm p6 2001, chipset intel fw82801ba. Event viewer provides no clues. Any ideas how to fix this?

Windows Xp Computer Keeps Shutting Down
I turn the computer on and in less than five minutes it just shuts down. No warning, no errors. I can even be working in a window. I opened the case and thoroughly cleaned out all the dust bunnies. Device manager says there is no problems. I'm running:
Xp pro sp2
80g hd w/ 40g free
Radeon 9200 series
Amd sempron 2600+ 1. 83 ghz
1g of ram

Computer Boots Up For Three Seconds Before Shutting Off
So i put my pc together (minus the ram and v-card, in shipping) and i tried turning it on to test the fans. The computer boots up and runs for all of three seconds before shutting off. It then proceeds to continually power itself on and off. Is this a shortcircut, a cpu issue, or just the result of there being no ram and vcard? It's amazing how much 7 years of inactivity can do to your pc building ability. Edit: the problem appeared to be poorly applied thermal paste. After re-installing the hsf, it stays powered on with no beeps.

Computer Is Shutting Down A Few Seconds After Starting
It was working just fine until i took my heat sink/fan off to clean. I put it back on and a tad bit of heat sink paste and now it starts up and runs about 5-8 seconds and shuts down.

Computer Randomly Shutting Off / Crashing
I've been having a bit of a problem with my new rig. I built it about 2 months ago (thanks to your guys' advice) and so far it has been working flawlessly, except for one thing. I have been getting completely random crashes, like someone pushed the power button on my rig. I'll just be doing something and "poof" the computer is off. Sometimes when this happens it will keep happening when i try to restart it at completely random intervals. Sometimes it will run for 30 seconds, and other times 5 minutes. I have reset the cmos multiple times to no avail. Here are my specs:
Evga x58 sli le int 1366
Diamond hd5850
Seagate 1tb hdd
Coolermaster haf-922 case
Antec truepower new 750w psu
Intel i7 920
Ocz ddr3 gold 6gb 1600

Computer Freezes Starting Up, Shutting Down, Standby
I don't know why but my computer has started freezing when its started up, shutting down, or coming out of standby. At start up it doesn't make it to the post screen, everything turns on and then just sits there, nothing shows up on the display. Same thing with standby. On shutdown it will freeze at the "windows xp is shutting down" screen. I have to either hit the restart button to get it to start up and come out of standby or i have to hold the power button for 4 secs to get it to shutdown. I didn't have these problems till about 1 week ago when i received my dell 2407wfp-hc, i doubt this would be the cause though.

Computer Is Shutting Off During The Windows Load Screen
So i ended up upgrading to an amd x2 6000 and getting an hd4850 as well. Windows 7 was also installed by a friend on my computer. However, my computer is shutting off during the windows load screen at the same time, like right after the windows colors icon forms together and glows or whatever. I have an antec 650w truepower power supply that is maybe 3 years old at the most. Also, i have been monitoring the watts and they are all stable and all less than . 20 different than the norm or whatever each thing is supposed to be.could the ram i bought be bad and is shutting down the computer? Temperatures are all fine as well. I just find it weird that it turns off during the exact same time but will sometimes randomly let me get to windows if i keep trying. A fast response would be appreciated, especially if it is possibly bad ram since i think the last day to exchange it at frys is today for me.

Computer Shutting Off When Encode Video / Uncompress Files
Issue:- when encoding video, or uncompressing files my computer just clicks off. My core2quad q6600 is getting hammered through the process. My guess:- it was either a power issue, or a cooling issue on the cpu. Steps taken thus far:- i've unplugged a few optical drives, and anything else i could to free up power. Additionally i've opened the case to see if cooling may have been an issue. Neither of these have helped. I have checked my cpu fan it appears to be working just fine so at this point i'm not sure where to turn next w/o spending money to test. Its worth noting, this pc hasn't had any recent hardware or software changes and that i first started noticing the issue out of the blue last week. Its to the point where i simply cannot encode any video, something i've always done w/o problems. Any ideas where to go next? Like i said, i can replicate the problem every time when pounding the cpu, but i'm not entirely sure if the cpu is dying or if its power/cooling related. I'm sure someone here has experienced similar issues in their travels.

Within 5 Minutes The System Freezes Up
Every time i turn it on, it boots up as normal. Usually within 5 minutes or so the system freezes up. Sometimes, the computer automatically restarts. Other times, the computer will freeze and, if i'm playing music, my speakers will emit a grinding noise, and i will have to manually turn it off. This usually happens between 1 and 3 times before the computer will turn on and be stable. Has anyone had a similiar problem? Any suggestions? I returned it to the store i bought it at and they were unable to fix it. I'm running a 1. 15 amd athlon with 256 mb ram.

Mouse Buttons Non Functional After 5 Or 10 Minutes
This past couple of days i've been reformatting and re-installing windows and tweaking my partition sizes. However, yesterday evening, after finishing loading up windows xp and in the middle of loading my programs my mouse buttons just stopped working for no apparent reason. The cursor movement works just fine but the buttons are non responsive. I reformated and reinstalled windows again this morning thinking everything will be fine but low and behold during my program load up the buttons packed up again after about 5 or 10 minutes. Any ideas?

Hard Disk Crashing On Every Five Minutes
My computer hangs. No warning, no messages, no extremely taxing problems. Just, hangs. Meaning. . My mouse can't move, my keyboard doesn't work. Everything is in stop time ( can't even use ctrl+atl+del) when my computer restarts, it shows that my primary master isn't detected. If i wiggle my ide cables around, it detects it. Now, here's the thing. The maxtor is a brand new hard drive, i had the same problem with my old western digital (40gb one) and i replaced it. I've tried changing my ide cables, and same problem. I've tried buying an ide controller card and same problem. Anyone with any idea on what i'm missing.

Pc Hangs And Takes 15 Minutes To Boot
Yesterday i formatted my pc, so i could add a smaller system drive, and then use 3 ide hdd's and 1 dvd-rw. Heres the setup i did:
Primary ide master - system drive
Primary ide slave - applications drive (empty)
Secondary ide master - docs drive (half full/half empty, up2u)
Secondary ide slave - dvd-rw
First boot from format, everything seemed snappy and fast, no problems. I started installing a few drivers, for nothing major, other than the nvidia hardware firewall on my dfi lanparty mb, and the basic mb drivers. Upon a required reboot, the machine now takes an immense 15 minutes to boot.

Why does my internet disconnect and reconnect every few minutes? I use wireless internet for my pc, and when i use the internet, it works fine for 3-5 minutes then after that, it just disconnects. I already switched my wireless channel and nothing seems to help.

Wireless Mouse Doesn't Respond For 10 Minutes After Logging On
Has anyone had an issue with the wireless mouse (microsoft intellipoint) which has a hub plugged into the usb port does not respond for the first 10-15 minutes after logging on? I use an ibm thinkpad, it's been doing this for about a month. The wireless keyboard works immediately, but the wireless mouse takes time.

Pc Shutting Down By Itself
My pc has been acting up for some time now, it started a while ago when it would just start shutting down (saying "windows is logging off" and then would just shut down). I thought it might have been a virus, but then it turns itself back on and then goes on to shut itself off instantly and goes on with this cycle until i take the power out. Sometimes the time between shutting off and turning back on is like 2 sec, other times its maybe 10sec. Which scared the living *** out of me because i had never seen a pc turn off and then back on instantaneously like that. At times it will even run for an hour or so (sometimes even a day) and then start doing that again. At one point if i played with the power switch (with which the pc is turned on/off). It would turn on, so i resoldered those wires. It worked for about a few weeks, and just now today it started doing it again. It's getting really annoying. I was suspecting it was my psu, but once it got fixed for a while due to the power switch, i started to think otherwise, but now. I don't know. My psu never seems hot or like it's overheating when i touch it after it shuts down.

Pc Shutting Down Intermittently
Reading some other posts from willhub" the symptoms sound similar to mine, apart from the fact that my computer will shutdown at various stages;
Whilst playing a game
Normal desktop usage or idle
Even before xp is loaded
I tested the memory from a bootable disk - got to 20% and then the system powered off. Interesting thing is this only started about 1 1/2 weeks ago. The system for no reason just started turning itself off and when attempting to power back on nothing happens!
I thought it was a ventilation problem so installed thermaltake fan/temp controller to see. All temperatures were fine but still kept shutting down.

Problem With Shutting Down
When i came back from a trip and pluged my pc in, the computer turned on automatically ! And not manually ! Then i tried to trun it off ! But it didn't turn off, just the motinor turns off but the case and hardwares such as fan, etc do not turn off and goes in something like standby mode !
This happens both when i trun of the pc in os and when i try to do it rapidly after restarting, ( without the control of os )
I take a look at bios features at cmos setup, but found nothing relating to this problem, and i do't either changed any hardware configuration before, i wanna ask what should i do inorder to trun it completely off ?

Pc Not Powering Down - Psu Is Not Shutting Down
After using my pc for about 5-6 hours and then try to shutdown, everything turns off except the psu, which leaves the system fans, cpu fan and cdrom drives on and the only way to turn my computer off is to hit the switch at the back of the psu. I have tried every windows shutdown trouble shooter on the web and replaced a motherboard and psu but the problem is still there. After a few weeks of experimentation i noticed that the shutdown problem occurrs only when the sensor chip on my motherboard stops working and no longer updates the system voltages etc. My system hardware:
Winfast nf4k8mc-ers (nforce4) motherboard
Antec tp2 480w psu
Amd64 3800+ venice
Nvidia 7800gt
160gb wd hd
1g pc3200 ram
