Dvd Rom Drive, Flash Hard Drive Slowing Data Transfer Speed

Issue a: when i put a cd/dvd into my dvd, the system (my computer/properties) recognizes the hardware, but it will not play. (Drive letter "d". )

Issue b: my computer will not recognize my data (flash?) Cards from my digital camcorder/camera. Issue c: my computer's hard drive (drive letter "c") once accepted my firewire uplink (1333). Now, my nle (pinnacle studio 9 plus) give the error message "drive c is not capable of capturing dv data", meaning it's date transfer rate is too slow. How can i fix these issues? Do i have to buy a new hard drive?

Fix A Noisy Pc Hard Drive / Dvd Rom

I made my very first pc. Everything seems to be ok except that my hard drive is really noisy, especially when i'm multitasking. It gives off this revving sound and i get quite concerned and i just stop doing things although i know many applications are still running. When i place a cd in the dvd rom, it runs real noisy. Now before you all ask me how noisy is noisy? It's louder than my external room airconditioner. Cpu stays within 48c - 57c.

Upgrading Cd Rom Drive To Dvd Rom Drive In Old Laptop

I have a friend who wants me to upgrade his compaq presario 1267 laptop to have a dvd-rom drive. Currently it has just a cd-rom drive. So are cd-rom/dvd-rom drives for laptops a "standard" size across the board? Or do i need to find one to specifically to fit the laptop i'm installing it into?

Dvd Burner Seen As Dvd Rom Drive Only In Vista 64

I've just upgraded to vista home premium 64 and my sony dw-q28a dvd-rw drive is not seen as a burner for cds or dvds. So if i right click on it with a re-writable disk in i do not get an 'erase' option, when i right click on a file there's no 'send to>cd' option and in media player when i click onto the burn tab, it tells me to connect a burner and restart!

This drive worked just fine in xp, then i upraded my motherboard to an asus p5e3 and installed vista and now it doesn't! I seem to have everything setup ok in the bios, i've tried re-plugging the ide & power cables and the drive name is read as sony dvd-rw but it won't function at all as a writer. Any ideas?

Dvd Rom Drive Will Not Read Dvd Copies

I have an ibm thinkpad a31 with a dvd rom using win 2000/sp4. The drive will not read dvd copies. It will only acknowledge the original dvd. It does this with memorex, sony and other name brand dvd's. How do i get the dvd rom to read the copies so that i don't have to keep using my originals?

Its only a 512mb memorex memory stick.

Pc Rebooting - Dvd Rom Drive Issue

Basically what happens is whenever i put a cd in the dvdrom drive, once the pc starts to read it, the pc reboots. This can happen at boot up as well (if i leave a cd in there). It happened suddenly and i do not think i installed anything that would have caused this. All the fans are working as well. Not sure what is causing this. Perhaps a wire popped out? Maybe it's not getting enough power? Any ideas?

Usb Flash Drive Speed Is Very Slow

I need a larger usb flash drive and was wondering what people would suggest. I have a 4gb drive now, but need something bigger. I have noticed that the transfer rate to my drive is very slow and was wondering if that has to do with the usb technology or because of my drive. I'd like one that transfers as fast as possible, but if they all transfer at the same speed, then so be it.

Dvd Rom Message: The Disk In Drive D Is Not Formatted

I am working on a laptop: dell inspiron 3800 and it contains a toshiba dvd-rom sd-c2402. Operating system: windows 2000, every time i put a cd in to the drive it comes up with the message: "the disk in drive d is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" With only 2 responses "yes" and "no". If i click no then it just goes back the "my computer" window. I have tried uninstalling the driver and downloading them from both the dell and toshiba websites. These drivers are not recognised by windows and it reverts to using the windows standard cd-rom ones. If anyone can shead some light on this situation i would be very grateful.

Dvd Rom Drive Isn't Getting Power

I bought a dell optiplex gx 620 in 2005 and it came with a dvd-rom drive. I switched it out for a cd burner but that couldn't play dvd's so i tried switching back to the dvd-rom drive, and it wasn't getting any power. When i plug the power into the cd burner drive it turns on and it can open, but when i plugged the power into the dvd-rom it doesn't turn on, no power light and it wont open. What could be the problem?

Dvd Rom Drive Wont Read Dvds

I have a hp pavilion with two optical drives - 1 is a dvd writer, the other a reader. Whenever i copy an audio disc on the fly, the burn is fine and everything is normal but for some reason, when i exit the program, the dvd-rom is now unable to recognize dvd discs. It will read audio discs and audio discs (and the writer can read everything; it's apparently unaffected by whatever this is), but it won't read dvds. If i reboot, everything is hunky-dory again (unless i copy an audio cd again. )

I initially thought that this was software related (and it still could be) but the problem occurs no matter what burning software i use. I've used sonic recordnow, nero and roxio. Every time i copy an audio disc, something is turning off the dvd read capabilities of the dvd-rom drive. Does anybody have any idea what's going on here? It's a fairly new system and it's far from a crippling problem.

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Transfer Files From Virus Infected Pc To External Hard Drive

I have a trojan virus on my computer. I cannot (given my limited knowledge) remove it. I want to transfer music files from the infected computer to an external hard drive. The anti-virus program that detected the virus on my computer 'tells me' that these files are not infected. My question: what are the risks of transferring these music files to my external hard drive? I am concerned about the risk to the external hard drive itself and also to any computer that i might later transfer these files to. Wow, i hope i asked this question intelligently! Too long? More concise? More info? (I'm interested in the best way to phrase a question as i believe that being a good computer scientist is largely about recognizing a problem intelligently)

Laptop Hard Drive Formatting Through Cd-rom On Boot

So i just sold a my laptop but i wanna wipe it clean before i ship it out. Problem is. Nothing i do will wipe it for me! When i try to start boot into windows, i'll see my wallpaper but nothing else and when i control+alt+delete to try and start explorer, it doesn't work and it tells me something about how it can't start because it there's no link to another application or something. To make matters worse, i can't boot into dos and run programs from there because the laptop is newer and doesn't have a floppy drive so programs like killdisk won't work. I tried sticking in my windows xp disk but it locks up while preparing for the setup and i also tried booting into knoppix and trying to delete the files from there, but it won't let me do that either. Somebody please help! I'd be extremely grateful if someone could show me a program that boots from a cd-rom that formats your hard drive or some other utility that will help me solve my problem.

Delete Data From Hard Drive

I have to rma a drive back to western digital. It is still functional so i would like to wipe the thing clean of data first. What do you guys recommend for doing such a thing? I would prefer a windows based solution. I would hook the drive up to a working pc as a second drive and go from there. I don't really want to make a boot disk and go that route. Any suggestions?

Recovery Of Hard Drive Data

I need help to retrieve the data from my western digital hard drive (40g). Last week my power supply burnt and damaged my mother board. So i tested with another existing system unit with my wd hard drive, it hang in the bios stage after the memory test finish. Cannot do anything. Is it the hard drive problem? May i know anyone can tell me how can i recover my data inside this bad hard drive? I need to recover my data since wd technical support only can give me a replacement of hard drive. I heard a lot of information about freezing the hard drive but i dont dare to do it cos i am afraid it will lead to totally un-recovery stage. I have a lot of useful information and some financial excel format that is shared with my roommate.

Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.

What Can Be Causing Hard Drive Data Corruption ?

Ok, i know my question could have a thousand possible answers (searching the forums, it appears so), but iím really stumped here. My hard drive keeps getting "data corruption errors" where it has "one or more unrecoverable problems" according to chkdsk /r. I donít know why my wd 160gb 1600js sata hard drive gets this problem. I am unable to properly boot into windows, and if i am able, programs open really slowly. Any ideas what could be the problem? It happened a few weeks ago, and i reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything (with the help of another hard drive with windows on it). Now, it happened again. The data corrupt issues started when i bought the ocz stealth xstream psu to replace a high-pitch whine antec psu. But according to the bios, the rail readings appear to be ok and nothing is overclocked, its just an office-use machine. One more thing, i didnít install the nvidia ide drivers (i still remember the horrors from when i had the nf2).

Hard Drive Problem - Data Recovery

I got a harddrive here that's running windows 98 and while you try and boot in it's just fatal error after fatal error. . Vxd's .dlls, mass blue screens and just ends in a freeze up eventually. I'd give the names of the files thats giving errors but it's literally different ones every time. I tried to get into the os from safe mode and it returned a himem.sys error. I figured the ram might be bad but it's good so i copied himem.sys from the 98 cd into windows directory in dos, but still getting the same error. I'm at a loss for what to do now and suppose the only thing i can do is try and recover the data and wipe the harddrive. I was wondering if perhaps i could connect the harddrive to my windows xp machine and salvage the data through there or if anyone has tips on how i could go about this i'd be most thankful.

New Installation Hard Drive Data Recovery

Here's the situation:

1. Old partition 'c:' says it's corrupted. New partition 'e:' says it has around 400 gigs free. 2. Even though 'c:' should contain 380 gigs of data and 'e:' should only contain the remaining 20 gigs. How do i recover my data?
