Sapphire Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Or Pny Nvidia 6600 Gt
Replies: 8 | Post Date: January 3rd 2005 | User: Thebrem | Forums: devhardware.comI was looking at the sapphire ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb and the pny nvidia 6600 gt at tigerdirect.com. Both look like amazing cards. I believe that the 6600 gt is 128 bit and not 256 bit like the 9800. And/or if the 6600 gt has other properties that can account for the difference in ghz i guess. My friend has the sapphire and he says it works great. I was wondering if the 6600 gt is better or worse than the sapphire ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb. The 6600gt is slightly less that the sapphire, i want to know which one i will get the most bang for my buck with. You can check out the cards at tiger direct of you want. I need an expert opinion on this because 230$ is alot of money for me. I kno all my system specs and everything i am torn between these 2 cards.

My brothers buying a pc off the internet, a fully configured one. Ive sorted all the specs out for him and its looking to be a pretty nice machine. But ive got to the graphics card section and im in confusion about which one to choose, at the moment im thinking between either the radeon 9800 pro 128mb (doesn't say the brand) or the sli geforce 6600gt 128mb (again no brand). If you could tell me which one to go for or a better one for about the same price, although im only looking to spend £110 on it. I would greatly appreciate it ?

Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Issues
I have sent a support ticket to ati, but my experiences with their techies aren't particularly good ones, so i thought i'd post here as well. Here is what i sent them:
When i attempt to play any 3d game, i find that the game freezes and causes either a system hang or the video driver to reset itself (meaning slow performance and no directx support), depending on the game. I have tried reinstalling my catalyst drivers many times, but has never helped. I have also tried to reinstall directx, but that also hasn't appeared to have helped. I have even tried installing a new power supply, and while this solved some problems, it hasn't solved this one. So yeah. I also have no access to another computer with which to try my graphics card, so i'm a bit buggered there. It should still be under warranty if it needs repairing, but i'm a bit skeptical of that due to the high shipping cost and long distance to the usa. But if i have to, i will!
Edit: a couple of other things i meant to ask:can anyone tell me why my install file for catalyst 7. 7 tries to run in dos mode, which, of course, it fails at? The 7. 5 version of my catalyst control center refuses to open, and, on start-up, says the "catalyst control center: host application has encountered an error and needs to close. " Any ideas why?

Notebook Ati Cards - Radeon 9800 And Radeon X600 Difference
Say a 256mb radeon 9800, and/or 256 radeon x600, how much of a difference would these have compared to their desktop counterparts. I wanna assume that they would try to just port it into the lappy but i seriously doubt that. So i guess that if the desktop 9800 has 8 pipes, the lappy version wud have 4 to keep it cooler? Same applies to x600 then right?
The other thing is, how does the desktop x600 compare to nvidia. Wats its competitor card? A regular 6800? Highly doubt that. Ill look this one up. I dont know the number of pipes on the x600.. Using sapphire's x600 pro for reference. It is 4 pipes. What the , fx series then?! 5950xt or sumthin in that order?

Ati Radeon 9500 128mb Agp Problem
I have a via k8t800 pro chipset. I have installed a new ati radeon 9500 128mb agp card and updated the drivers to the latest 7. 11 catalyst drivers. Here is exactly what happens: after installation is finished, my pc restarts and then when the time comes where the ati card starts testing suddenly my pc simply freezes and i have to click on the restart button. After that, everything works fine except for ati hardware acceleration (everything lags even when i scroll down in the browser, and video is simply unwatchable). When i checked the settings under smartgart, i found that everything is off (agp write/read, pci write/read and fast write) and the slider is all the way to 8x. I've tried the following:
- Installed the latest hypernion via drivers with no luck. - Installed the 4 in 1 4. 43 drivers with no luck. - Installed the previous ati drivers: 7. 7, 7. 4, 6. 11, 6. 10, 6. 9, 5. 13, & 5. 9 with no luck (with the 5. X drivers, when the pc restarts windows doesn't even start and the pc simply crashes). - In bios, i loaded the optimised settings with no luck. - Downloaded and installed the latest directx 9. 0c with no luck. I simply gave up and have no idea what's going on. My only guess is that there is a hardware problem but i'm not sure what it is. By the way, i have an ati radeon 9200 which works fine (pci write/read are on and also agp read is on with 8x) and it doesn't freezes at all. I would've just thrown away my 9500 card since all i want is to be able to watch video but i need to connect my pc to my hdtv through the dvi to component adapter which doesn't work with the 9200 series.

Ati Radeon 9500 Sapphire Overclock
My old 9500 is getting a bit old. Going to buy a new card soon quite a good one but in the mean time while i'm saving i want to look at overclock my 9500. I have seen the soft mod things but none of them are compatible with my card. Its a red pcb but it didn't work no matter what i tried. Its got bog standard cooling so cant go to mad. But i was wondering what people think i could do with the card. And if it would make any difference in games like farcry, vietcong 2, call of duty etc.

Radeon 9800 Pro Bios Flash
I've been reading these forums for quite some time on overclocking my cpu and video card which all have helped greatly. Now i have a question. Flashing the video card bios, how is that done exactly or is it recommended? I noticed ati tray tools have an option to dump the card bios. What does that do exactly?
My radeon is a saphire brand, i noticed on their website they have a bios flash utility, winflash. Does that flas my card bios to the most recent bios? Again is this something i need to do, should do?

Upgrading From Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb
I currently have a radeon 9800 pro 256mb, i was thinking of getting a more powerful card but i was wondering if i just got nvidia 7800 gtx (or something else thats pretty much top of the line) by itself would it be a big leap over how my computer can handle my current and future games on high settings or do i also need to change my cpu and things. Im obviously not gonna want to spend the cash if i there isn't going to be big improvement in what my computer will be able to handle. Id really appreciate any feedback cause i don't really know anything about computers and video cards. This is what im currently running on:
Amd athlon 64 3200 2. 0 ghz
1 gig of ram
Radeon 9800 pro 256 mb
Ive heard about the dual and quad cards but i dont have the cash for that. So would if i just got one of top cards out right now would it be enough?

Overclocking Ati 9800 Pro
Lets start at the beginning and state my sys specs:
P4 3. 0ghz presscot
Gigabyte 8s655fx mobo
1 gig samsung ddr 400 3-4-4-9 2cmd (whatever that means)
Radeon 9800pro 256mb 256bit made by ati (hynix f-28 mem)
Hec ace 580wat power supply. Now these days my 9800pro is just not strong enough anymore and it currently runs at default settings (i think it's 378 338). The card just wont cut it. I want to oc it since buying a new one is not an option for now but i really know almost nothing about it. I am however willing to spend some money on a cooler but i need help determining which is the best for me to get, and how high i should o/c my card or maybe i should just flash it to 9800xt? I heard some ppl talk about doing this. Now i may be a newbie to o/cing, but im pretty handy with pcs in general so i don't fear doing this [plus the card has warranty so who cares right?

Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro 512mb Driver Issue
After installing the display drivers and ati software on the reboot the ccc will pull up an error that says "cannot detect ati drivers". The performance is brutally slow. When right clicking on the desktop and selecting properties then settings it just shows the default monitor. However in device manager it shows both the primary and secondary drivers correctly installed with no issues. It almost seems as if windows is not detecting the card, however when doing a fresh install of ati the add new hardware wizard starts. I have tried everything i could think of, i downloaded the new drivers off this website, used driver cleaner to try and rid old ati files but nothing seems to work. I also tried downloading and installing the omega drivers for the card, i then proceed to get the error of "0x0000008e" on start up. I am running a 500w power supply and have tested it, everything seems to work fine.

Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro 512mb For Counter Strike Source
I got the sapphire radeon x1950 pro 512mb graphic card and i also tried playing counter strike source and my fps is usually just around 50 ~ 80 while i hear other ppl saying they can go over 150. Is there anyway for me to increase my fps rates for cs source without having to do anything?

Upgrade Nvidia 9800 Gt To Ati 4890, Same Frame Rates
I recently upgraded to the xfx 4890 and for some reason, i am not seeing frame rate improvements i was expecting. On prototype (all maxed) and gta4 (all high), i am still getting 20-30 fps like i did with my 9800 gt. This is very frustrating because i spent more money on a card that's not giving me any improvements. I know this isn't supposed to be happening, so can someone explain what might be the issue here? I even reformatted my computer so i know my previous nvidia drivers would not conflict with ati's after removing them. I am on windows 7 and my other specs are in my sig (didn't update my video card on the sig yet).

Ati Radeon 9800 Xt Lock Ups
I just installed a new motherboard and since then i cannot get my 9800xt to run on the pc. It will freeze within 5 mins for sure. I have run the pc on its onboard video and another video card and it runs perfect for weeks. I have installed the 9800xt into another pc and no problems, it has now ran it for over 3 days, so i know the card is fine. So i am almost positive its some type of setting. I have fdisked and reloaded windows and not installed a single program. It ran the windows install fine with the 9800xt but once it got to windows it locked up within 5 mins. I am not able to even have enough time to install the catalyst driver. If i run it with the onboard video or this other cheap card i can run it for weeks. The pc i tested the 9800xt on is a really slow old pc, with no catalyst drivers, just the windows drivers it installs automatically. I have disabled the onboard video when i have tried to run the 9800xt and that didn't change a thing. The only possible thing is i think that old pc is 4x agp and the one i am trying to get it to run on is 4x/8x and in the bios there is no place to change the agp speed. My setup is. Sapphire Ati Radeon X1650 Problem Installing Drivers
I just finally got my new video card in the mail, a sapphire ati radeon x1650 (512mb, pci express), i get it into my computer just fine, but now the drivers will not install. The cd that came with it either locks up my pc when i try to load it, or the installer doesn't even do anything. I tried downloading the latest drivers for the correct card from both the ati website and the sapphire website. Both ones don't work. I made sure to remove all traces of the old ati drivers, so that shouldn't be causing the problem. I know my pc works with everything, the new drivers just refuse to install. Here is what happens when i run the setup:
1. Ati software installation screen opens (the big fullsize window with a red background)
2. A message window pops up, titled: notify
There is no message in the box, just an ok button. 3. After pressing the ok button, a new notify window opens, now with the message, "data. Size() !=3". 4. After pressing ok on the new message, a final message appears stating, "setup failed to run installation: (0x80040707)"
After i press ok on that message, setup closes. I ordered the card from newegg.com
After trying to get it to work all day, i don't think it was worth the $59. 99
I can't go back to my old radeon x700 now (which i've had ever since i purchased my pc so long ago), so i'm pretty much screwed over now, with no ability to play any games.

Upgrading From Pny Geforce 6600 Pcie X16
I currently have the following set-up:asus a8n-sli deluxe amd athlon 64 x2 4200on-board realtek sound right now i am using the pny geforce 6600 pcie x16 video card. 256mb ddr. I would really like to upgrade my card to something better, but there are so many options out there. Basically i am looking for the best card for the money. I can't afford to spend $600 on a card - $300 is probably my limit. So with that being said, which card is going to give me the best results with my current configuration?
I should also note that i am not a *** gamer - but i do enjoy playing games every now and again.

Support Ati 9800 Pro On Asrock P4i45gv
I have the asrock-p4i45gv 2. 4ghz-1gb ram-motherboard. It has an agp slot called agi. Will my ati 9800 pro work in this slot? Because i can't get it to run right. Catalyst control center keeps showing that it is running on 0x. Whenever i move it to 4x or 8x, it reboots and goes back to 0x. Am i doing something wrong here?

Radeon 9600xt 128mb Or Geforce Fx5900xt 128mb
I was planning to get a computer, and im stuck on choosing between 2 average videocards. Is the ati radeon 9600xt 128mb a better card or is msi nvidia geforce fx5900xt 128mb a better choice? Both of the cards are around the same price.

Ati Radeon Hd 5770 Vs Nvidia Gtx 260
This is the exact specs description of the two cards in two different desktops i'm choosing between, so which would you recommend out of these two cards? (To run games and multimedia work). Radeon hd 5770
* 1 gb memory
* I/o ports: hdmi, displayport connector and 2 dvi (and vga using included dvi-to-vga adapter)
* This card occupies a single pci express x16 slot, and covers the adjacent slot. Or
Nvidia geforce gtx 260 (double bracket)
* 1. 8 gb memory
* I/o ports: hdmi (through dongle only). 2 dvi-i (single-link and dual-link) - (and vga using included dvi-to-vga adapter)
Both are running on pretty much identical setups of:
Core-i7-860 (l) 2. 8 ghz (95w)
Socket lga1156
Chipset: intel h57 express
Motherboard:
Manufacturer: msi
Motherboard name: ms-7613
Hp/compaq motherboard name: iona-gl8e
Power supply
460w
Ram
8gb ddr3
I read the gtx runs faster, but the radeon runs cooler and less power, apparently, and the gtx runs on directx 10 and the radeon is on dx 11, if that makes a difference in the future etc.

Nvidia Geforce Gtx 260 Or Ati Radeon Hd 5770?
Whats a better graphics card? Nvidia geforce gtx 260 " 896mb or ati radeon hd 5770 - 1gb?
Answer:- it depends upon what you mean by "better". The gtx 260 is more powerful and gets higher frame rates in games. It also has physx support for the few games that support it. However it's an older design that doesn't support dx11, and requires more power. In most games, the radeon 5770 is slightly slower than ati's older radeon 4870, while the gtx 260 is slightly faster than the 4870. In call of duty the 5770 actually edges the 4870. However, to run a gtx 260 or radeon 4870 you need at a minimum 550w power supply with two (not just one) pci-e power connectors, while the radeon 5770 only requires a 450w power supply with a single power connector. So a lot of people can use the 5770 without having to upgrade their power supplies. Also, to run those older cards in sli or crossfire requires a psu with 4 power connectors! Also the radeon 5770 has the eyefinity feature for connecting a 3rd monitor. http://www.Bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/10/13/amd-ati-radeon-hd-5770-review/9
http://www.Legionhardware.com/articles_pages/ati_radeon_hd_5770_crossfire_performance, 5.html
http://www.Techspot.com/review/209-ati-radeon-hd-5770/page8.html
So the gtx 260 wins on pure performance in current games, but for features and future upgrade-ability, the 5770 is a better choice.

Ati Radeon 9700 Pro Blank Screen
My problem is this: occasionally my screen is blank after coming up from sleep-mode or restart. This also happens after playing half-life 2 and doom 3. Sometimes after a minute or so, the screen will come on fine and sometimes it is blank for a very long time. Things that i have done to solve the problem include unplugging, then reconnecting the dvi cable and, just this morning, updating to the catalyst 5. 1 drivers. Nothing seems to be working . . . On another note, after installing the 5. 1 catalyst control center, restarting my computer and loading the program gives the following error:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on ok to terminate the application. "I have uninstalled all ati programs and drivers off of the computer and re-installed with no apparent luck. I'm a little upset that i can't fix this issue and hoping that someone out there knows what the *** is going on and could offer some advice! My computer set-up is as follows:
Dell 8200
Ati radeon 9700 pro
Lg 19" flatron lcd monitor
796 mb ram

Ati Radeon X1600 Pro Video Card Problem
I have an ati radeon x1600 pro video card and lately i've been experiencing video problems when i play cod4. The video is "jumpy" similar to when you get lag. I'm getting 90+ fps all the time and my cpu temp is between 38-40 c, so i know can't be lag. I updated the video card drivers and the wireless router is not the problem either. I scanned my computer for viruses and spyware last night and nothing harmful was found. I thought it could be my antivirus but i just uninstalled it and i still have the problem. Is the video card dying? Any ideas or solutions?
