Repair Drive - Recover The Data

I have a 20gig hd with two partitions one 5gig for os and the other 15gig for data and programs etc. The other day i turned my machine on and the d: drive (15gig partition) was missing. It just didnt show the partition at all. Now somehow i managed to get it to display the partition but every time you go to open the drive it says it isnt formatted and needs to be. Now i am not sure what has happened but i am guessing it has got something to do with the file system. I am sure that the pc hasnt wiped all the data of my drive so it should be recoverable, i just would like to know if anyone knows how to solve the problem or if there are any programs available that will help repair te drive/recover the data.

Recover Corrupt Hard Drive

I have a western digital 1tb hard drive which i accidentally dropped yesterday. Since then, at first it would keep connecting and disconnecting. The sound effect that windows plays when something connects or disconnects would keep repeating. Now, it says location not found, w: is not accessible, and parameter is incorrect. It says i can't access the disk without formatting it. Which i haven't done. If it matters, it remembers that it's w:, and it remembers that it's a my book (the name of it from western digital). That's about it though, it doesn't remember what i named it (what it said in my computer) or anything else. It just says local disk. I don't know if i should do error-checking or something like that. I'm just not touching anything without advice. There are a lot of programs suggested online that recover drives, but i don't know where to start. I don't want to risk what was on the drive, which is *possibly* replaceable stuff, but i want to recover it if i can. If anybody could help my situation, please do! I was in immediate shock when i saw that it wasn't reading. I also don't have much money to spare on this, so if there are any solutions, preferably free, that would be great. Lots of thumbs up and down please so i know who has good words of advice.

Recover Files From A Hard Drive On A Corrupted Windows Xp

I'm trying to recover files from a hard drive with a corrupted version of xp home. It says windows did not shut down properly last time and gives me the 3 safe mode options, last config that worked, and start normally. If i go to safe mode, immediate blue screen and error code. If i go to last config that worked it shows the windows icon, then the time bar freezes and goes to blue screen. I need to recover important document files for my friends father asap, so i was looking into hard drive enclosures, but am fairly unsure if it will work the way i am planning. Would the enclosure be a way to pull the files off the drive? I don't mind wiping it and re-installing windows, but i need these files.

Recover Files From Laptop Hard Drive With Windows 2000

Boss at work has managed to crash his laptop and of course has not done a backup in 3 years, now he wants me to try and recover some of his files. This is a windows 2000 system and what it is doing is coming up with the following message on boot up. A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Now i thought maybe the system files where corrupted, we got one of these fix your disk programs and tried running it, it says that both the partition table and boot sector are ok so no joy there, had a look on this forum and found a thread with link to ntfs4dos and ran that, it says the nt ntfs partition is not initialized. Finally tried coping on the system files again using the windows 2000 repair option still no joy. Does anyone have any other ideas i can try, can i some how link the hard drive via a converter cable to my desk top (maybe a stupid question, but hay i'm clutching at straws), or do i just send it back and tell him that it will cost £350 to get the files and here is an essay on the virtues of keeping backups. (Probably won't do last bit as end up getting fired).

Dvd Rom Drive, Flash Hard Drive Slowing Data Transfer Speed

Issue a: when i put a cd/dvd into my dvd, the system (my computer/properties) recognizes the hardware, but it will not play. (Drive letter "d". )

Issue b: my computer will not recognize my data (flash?) Cards from my digital camcorder/camera. Issue c: my computer's hard drive (drive letter "c") once accepted my firewire uplink (1333). Now, my nle (pinnacle studio 9 plus) give the error message "drive c is not capable of capturing dv data", meaning it's date transfer rate is too slow. How can i fix these issues? Do i have to buy a new hard drive?

Transferring Data From Old Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

I have a dell dimension 2400, and according to the dell disk monitoring system, the drive 0 on the primary ide channel is operating outside of normal specifications, and it advises me to back up my data and get a new hard drive. I currently have a maxtor diamondmax plus 8 (6e040l0) which is the failing one. I plan on getting a hitachi deskstar p7k500 250gb ide hard drive. However i don't really know how to transfer all my data and my system files including my windows xp system files to the new hard drive. I've burnt my whole hard drive on to dvd's (about 24gb -> 6 dvd's). However i've also heard of disk imaging, although i don't really know much. If i install my new hard drive, and turn the computer on, how far will the computer boot?, Since there is no system and os files on the new hard drive. Will the opening dell page load, and will i be able to get into setup?

And if the computer won't boot far enough for me to get into the user accounts, how do i transfer my dvd data and system files to the new hard drive?

Then there's disk imaging. If i create a disk image of my entire hard drive, where do i store it, and will it be as big as all my files i.e. 24gb, and is the only way of storing it on a external hard drive?

Finally i was wondering how am i supposed to restore the files in my disk image if my computer won't boot far enough for me to actually do anything. I'm sooooo sorry that i've asked a zillion questions, but i really have to know before i make the purchase.

Delete Data From Hard Drive

I have to rma a drive back to western digital. It is still functional so i would like to wipe the thing clean of data first. What do you guys recommend for doing such a thing? I would prefer a windows based solution. I would hook the drive up to a working pc as a second drive and go from there. I don't really want to make a boot disk and go that route. Any suggestions?

Data Recovery Of A Hard Drive Partition In Two

My drive is partition into 2. A drive c for my xp systems and a d for files. Windows xp doesnt work anymore on the c drive partition and all it does is just keep on going to the windows screen and then restart and will not get pass it. I have installed a second sata drive in my pc and installed xp on it. Now when i connect both drives in my pc including the faulty one, it just does the same thing again with the restarts looping and will not load the working xp thats loaded onto my other sata drive. Is that because they both have the c drive letter on both of them and the xp operating systems?

Is there any way of telling the pc to load the second sata drive with the working xp and disregard the faulty one with a c drive letter partition. All i want is for the pc to see the faulty drive as just another drive with files in there and an xp operating system in there. I am thinking of just getting a usb sata external case tomorrow and put the faulty sata drive in there and connect it to my pc hoping it will not recognise the c drive letter and operating system in there and just copy the files from it.

What Can Be Causing Hard Drive Data Corruption ?

Ok, i know my question could have a thousand possible answers (searching the forums, it appears so), but iím really stumped here. My hard drive keeps getting "data corruption errors" where it has "one or more unrecoverable problems" according to chkdsk /r. I donít know why my wd 160gb 1600js sata hard drive gets this problem. I am unable to properly boot into windows, and if i am able, programs open really slowly. Any ideas what could be the problem? It happened a few weeks ago, and i reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything (with the help of another hard drive with windows on it). Now, it happened again. The data corrupt issues started when i bought the ocz stealth xstream psu to replace a high-pitch whine antec psu. But according to the bios, the rail readings appear to be ok and nothing is overclocked, its just an office-use machine. One more thing, i didnít install the nvidia ide drivers (i still remember the horrors from when i had the nf2).

Hard Drive Problem - Data Recovery

I got a harddrive here that's running windows 98 and while you try and boot in it's just fatal error after fatal error. . Vxd's .dlls, mass blue screens and just ends in a freeze up eventually. I'd give the names of the files thats giving errors but it's literally different ones every time. I tried to get into the os from safe mode and it returned a himem.sys error. I figured the ram might be bad but it's good so i copied himem.sys from the 98 cd into windows directory in dos, but still getting the same error. I'm at a loss for what to do now and suppose the only thing i can do is try and recover the data and wipe the harddrive. I was wondering if perhaps i could connect the harddrive to my windows xp machine and salvage the data through there or if anyone has tips on how i could go about this i'd be most thankful.

New Installation Hard Drive Data Recovery

Here's the situation:

1. Had a pc with a motherboard that crashed. 2. Pc had 400 gig hard drive of which 380 gigs of data was used leaving 20 gigs remaining. 3. Replaced the motherboard and installed a new windows partition in the remaining 20 gigs of data. 4. Windows runs and everything works fine. However:

1. Old partition 'c:' says it's corrupted. New partition 'e:' says it has around 400 gigs free. 2. Even though 'c:' should contain 380 gigs of data and 'e:' should only contain the remaining 20 gigs. How do i recover my data?

Preserving Data While Formatting External Hard Drive

I recently purchased a new ps3 and would like to transfer some audio and video files to it from my external hard drive. I ran into a problem, however, in that my hard drive is formatted in ntfs and the ps3 can only read fat32. I have about 260 of 300 gb filled, and not enough space on my pc to hold the files while i reformat my external. Is there any simple way for me to somehow format the hard drive in fat32 and still be able to restore all the data that's on it afterward?

Ive considered using mozy to temporarily and cheaply store my files on-line while i reformat, but worry both about reliability and the time it would take to backup and restore such a large amount of data. While doing research i've read recommendations for the use of programs like partition magic in similar situations, but i have no knowledge regarding such things and don't know if i'd be able to shrink the partition enough for it to fit in the small amount of free space that is available. Would my best bet be to try to temporarily get my hands on another external hard drive to hold all of the data while i reformat?

How To Pull Data Off Dead Laptop Hard Drive?

I've done it multiple times in the past, but this time i fear the drive itself may be damaged. My laptop just died and i used a sata-to-usb converter to connected the pulled hard drive to an old power mac g4. It shows up in disk utility but doesn't mount. Any help is appreciated, as i foolishly don't have a backup. All i want to is to mount the drive one last time in order to perform a feel backup.

Usb Flash Drive Error - This Drive Needs To Be Formatted

A friend of mine recently had her usb drive come up with an error. Whenever it is accessed it throws up an error "this drive needs to be formated". So we tried running chkdsk and even tried running restoration (http://www.Snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html) which i've tried on my father's hard drive before with excellent results. This time it just throws up a "unable to recognize" error. When i try to format it, we can only format a 8mb partition (out of 512mb) and even then it says "no" to that. I used the built in windows xp. Chkdsk cannot see it, says it is in raw format (which i assume means there is no partition). My next step is to try some specialized software made for flash drive recovery. There are important files on there that the owner would very much like back (however not important enough to justify large spending of money). A free-ware option would be fantastic.

Dvd Rom Message: The Disk In Drive D Is Not Formatted

I am working on a laptop: dell inspiron 3800 and it contains a toshiba dvd-rom sd-c2402. Operating system: windows 2000, every time i put a cd in to the drive it comes up with the message: "the disk in drive d is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" With only 2 responses "yes" and "no". If i click no then it just goes back the "my computer" window. I have tried uninstalling the driver and downloading them from both the dell and toshiba websites. These drivers are not recognised by windows and it reverts to using the windows standard cd-rom ones. If anyone can shead some light on this situation i would be very grateful.

W2k Hd Error Message: The Disk In Drive D Is Not Formatted

As topic, i received an error on my w2k system "the disk in drive d is not formatted, format is now?". Yes, it is a w2k (windows 2000 professional) system. It's an old reliable system that i use it as a file server. Last night, i noticed some files disappeared on my d: drive. I restarted my computer and then i couldn't access my d: drive anymore. When i try to access it, it pops up with an error message stating "the disk in drive d is not formatted, format is now?". Any suggestion of what would cause this kind of problem and how to recover data?

And yes, i did use google to search for some answers, and i have 2 possible solutions on my hands right now, hdd re generator and partition table doctor. I am just curious if anyone have any other suggestion.
