Message: Memory Size Decreased
I have got a dell dimension 4100 pc and recently by mistake i took out the original memory and inserted a 256 mb pc 100 dimm the pc performed the post and then displayed a message memory size decreased. I switched of the pc removed the dimm put back the original dimm and it does not do anything. The fans switch on, the key board leds light up then go dead, the cd rom lights switch on and the hdd makes the normal whirring sound but there is no display. The floppy light does not come nor there are any beeps or post. I tried removing and putting back all the cards one by one but they all seem to be fine, but still problem persists. I removed the dimm and the mobo gives 3 short beeps.

Computer Shutdown
I have a intel 850gb mobo and i formatted my hdd 2x thinking it was a bad install. When i hit start, shudown, not restart the computer goes thru the powering down phrase i hear the familiar click of the hdd whichs turns it off and bam, the hdd is off but the mobo and fans including cpu are still on. I replaced the power supply to no avail. I have to hit the reset button then the power button to quickly too turn off computer. Strange, im thinking the mobo is not sending the signal to the power supply commanding it to turn off. My hdd is new and was working finr, i like to reformat my hdd 2x a year to clean off the mess.

Computer Shutdown Randomly
I built my computer a few years ago and have had no problems (p4). Today it decided to shutdown randomly. I tried rebooting but it would turn on like it was going to start but bios would not post and it would shut down after about 5 seconds. My first inclination was that it was a failing power supply. Replaced that without any luck. The odd thing is that when i plug in both power components from the ps to the mobo it turns on and after five seconds turns off;
Yet, when i do not have the 12v 4pin plugged in, the computer stays running, although it does not load windows. I checked the ram, light on mobo is on, nothing smells fried, i'm hoping it is not the mobo.

Pc Shutdown - Buzzing Noises
Recently my computer has been randomly shutting itself down. Immidiatly after the shutdown a loud buzzing/beeping noise occurs from the front of the pc. My computer is custom made from the internet, and so i dont know who to contact. The part making the noise is a small black circular object, about the size of a 10c piece. Its connected to my motherboard by a black/red wire. I believe the wire goes next to the wires for my on/off, reset, and on & working lights. I replaced my hard drive as my university technician told me my hd was seizing, however that isnt the problem. Any ideas suggestions to my problem? Or could someone tell me what this noisey black thing is! And how can i fix it!

Reboots When Shutdown Is Complete
When i go to shutdown on my comp it goes to shutdown then as it has finished shutting down it automatically reboots. Have tried unchecking automatic restart in system properties to no avail, have heard that a new graphics card could be a prob but not too sure about that.

Computer Does Not Turn Off After Shutdown ?
I have an old opteron desktop that i will be using as a home server. The issue i've been having for the past few months is that it will not physically turn off after the os finishes shutting down. It used to, when i was using it as my main desktop, so i have no idea what has changed. What i have tried:
Windows 7 professional x64
Windows server 2008 r2 x64
Windows xp professional sp2
Reset bios
Install nvidia chipset drivers from manufacturer cd
Windows xp sp3
Ubuntu 7. 10
Flash bios to 4/06/2006 from 3/29/2006
Things i have tried since posting:
Unplug hard drives, boot ubuntu livecd, halt
In all of the operating systems i have tried, none can successfully turn off the computer. The only indication that the computer is supposed to have shut off is that i hear something turn off (hard drive maybe), and then all power would normally be cut, but now that sound doesn't happen in xp after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried disabling usb power suspend in server 2008, with no effect. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Edit: the os's shutdown screen remains on the display after it "shuts down". Specs:
Amd opteron 144 1. 8ghz
Dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d (modded to sli-d)
3gb ddr-400
Two geforce 7600 gt (one is out of the machine right now)
Single 160gb ide hard drive
Single 320gb sata2 hard drive

Pc Reboot When Set To Shutdown
I have a hp dc5700 and i just installed a nvidia 8400 pci. When i shutdown the pc it restarts. I tested without the card and the on board video works fine and the computer shuts down properly. Tried reinstalling the drivers and un-checking automatic reboot to see if it was blue screening, but nothing. There are no errors in the log and the pc works fine. I am leaning toward hardware (either the motherboard or video card). Any suggestions?

Manually Shutdown A Hdd Through Software
I was wondering if there exists software to manually shutdown a hdd. I have one that i don't use all the time and tends to get hot, so i would like it to rest untill i need it, maybe also to safe power and extend lifetime of the drive. A google search doesn't seem to get me to usefull info.

Windows Has Been Shutdown To Prevent Damage To Your Computer
When i'm installing from my windows xp disk the initial blue screen comes up saying it's loading all the stuff from the cd basically and then i get the error message as follows:-
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer, press f8 and select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information:
*** Stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08)
*** Pci.sys - address f748e0bf base at f7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c
I have no idea what would cause this. I'm over-clocking my cpu some some bios settings are changed, could setting them back to defaults solve this issue? It doesn't really make sense to me. Please, i'd be grateful for any advice.

Computer Idle Mode - Which Is Better Shutdown Or Standby ?
Since shutdown takes huge power while start up and shut downing the system and standby also consumes power. For better power usage. I want suggestion on shutdown and standby. Depending upon the time that computer sits idle. (i.e if computer is idle for 1 hr it is better to shutdown.

Can A Hardware Button Utilize The Software Shutdown In Windows?
Can you wire a button into a computer (through serial, mobo jumpers, whatever) with a suitable utility so that the button doesn't do a hard powerdown (atx style) but instead uses the windows shutdown?
What would be even more convinient is if the same button could be used for power on / shutdown, but i'm not sure if that is possible. I guess the easiest solution is if there is a utility that lets the atx power on/off button access the windows shutdown sequence. Is there?
Does anyone understand what i'm asking, and does anyone have any suggestions?

Power Issue On Shutdown, Fans Do Not Stop, Led Flicker
Just put together a new machine, but using an old antec case and 350w psu (antec sl350s) and some other old hardware. First i started just plugging in the mobo with ram and heatsink (so, no peripherals connected, not even hd or the video card) and i notice that when i power down by holding down the front power button, the cpu fan stops, but the case and psu fans keep going! I have to switch off using the psu switch to shut everything down. Well, that's weird, but i still move on. However, with all the new hardware plugged in, the problem gets worse. Now when i switch off using the front power button:the case and psu fan are still onthe power led is off, but the hd led starts flickering very rapidlythe floppy drive starts grinding loudly and angrily; leave the system in this state, and the grinding dies down (but never goes away), then comes back after a few minutes, although i haven't done anything (the box is just sitting there)
The real problem is, the system does not boot after that! If i turn off the psu switch, then turn it back on, the clicking/flickering comes back. Pushing the front power button makes the cpu fan jerk, but it does not start on and the system does not start booting. But if i wait a few minutes with the psu switched off, i can boot up after that. This need to wait for a while is bothering me. What could be going wrong? Are these symptoms of a faulty power supply? How should i proceed diagnosing this?
So to conclude, my system goes into this weird twisted state where hd led flickers and floppy clicks at about the same rate and the power/reset button do nothing. The state is reachable if i power down using the front power button, or if i flip the psu switch off and back on after that (but if i wait for a few minutes before switching it back on, then fans do not come back on and i can boot just fine). My system (items marked "new" are the stuff i just bought, the rest is components that have been working for at least a few months):
Cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2. 60ghz dual-core (new)
Cpu heatsink/fan: noctua nh-c12p cpu cooler (new)
Motherboard: asus m2n-sli (new)
Ram: 2 x 1024mb ocz platinum revision-2 pc6400 ddr2 800mhz dual channel (new)
Video card: evga geforce 6200 256mb ddr2 pci video card (only bought it because mobo doesn't have on-board video, dang) (new)
Psu: 350w antec sl350s
Hard drive: 160gb sata 3. 0gb/s samsung spinpoint
Other peripherals: promise 2-port sata 3. 0gb/s raid controller card
Case: antec slk3700-bqe
Case fan: some 120mm antec fan that came with the case

Usb Memory Disk As Paging File For Virtual Memory On Windows
I want to know your opinion about usb memory disk as a paging file for windows virtual memory. I am trying to set paging file on usb memory disk, but it is looks windows don't like it and simply ignore it and create paging file on my c: drive. It is looks like paging file is created on usb memory disk, but when i check, there is no swap file on usb memory disk. The usb memory disk still empty. Anyone have experience on it?

Test All Memory Of Memory Above 1mb Using Virtual 8086 Mode
I reinstalled windows last night, and reinstalled a bunch of programs. Then i went to bed and when i woke up, i restarted the machine, and it wouldn't turn on.initially i got beep codes which were 1 long (a couple of times), this is a phoenix bios. My motherboard has one of those lcd screens that tell you error codes. When i looked it up in the manual, it says:
Test all memory of memory above 1mb using virtual 8086 mode, page mode and clear the memory
Not sure what this means specifically. I'm going to run memtest, but wanted to know if anyone could clarify the above message for me.

Memory Latency Vs Memory Speed
Memory latency vs memory speed?
Should i get ddr2 900 5-5-5-15
Or should i get
Ddr 800 4-4-4-10?

Out Of Range Message On Tv
"out of range" message on tv when connecting laptop through vga. I have been using a hitachi 19inch hd tv as a laptop monitor for a while but halfway through using it a few days ago the screen cut out and displayed the message "out of range" i didn't change any settings or do anything out of the ordinary so it's completely spontaneous. Any ideas on how i can get the screen working normal again?

Message: No Rgb Input
Im getting the above message on a m8s pc and im not sure whats causing the problem. The pc is powering up (fans, led on mobo, power led etc) yet there is no input to the monitor. There is no gfx card just onboard vga. Ive tried my 7900gs in it but that didnt solve the problem. Ive reseated the ram & cpu, cleared the cmos (via the jumpers) and basically checked all the connections but nothing has worked
Tbh im starting to think the motherboard has died as its strange that all of the fans and leds are powering up yet nothing else is happening (im not even getting error beeps from the mobo) what do you guys think?
Ps: the mobo is an asus k8v-vm skt 754 with a sempron 3200+ fitted. Ive also tested the said pc on my own monitor using my own vga cable and still nothing.

Bootmagic Message At Startup
I setup my machine to dual boot win nt and win98 (separate partitions). I tried to use bootmagic as my boot manager but the damn program wouldn't even let me boot (came up with ". |. " At every boot and froze). After many reformats and failed bm installations, i finally decided to use nt's boot loader instead. But i have an annoying prompt at startup that says something like:
. |. Cannot find btmagic.img
Press any key to load from active partition. After pressing a key, it goes to the nt boot loader with both os listed and everything is fine. I have win98 on c: (active) and also the nt load files on there (formatted fat, of course). Does anyone know how to get rid of that damn message?

Message To Ati And Nvidia
As we embark on nvidia's next generation of cards. I remain an optimist, but i am pretty sure that fermi isn't going to be revolutionary or exciting. What we will see is just a fps improvement, we are not going to see avatar-like graphics any time soon. Whatever fps improvement, whether it be 10fps, 5fps etc. More than the competing ati card, i am certain none of their offering will offer better power savings, better reliability, and a better warranty than an xfx 5870. Also i find it hard to believe that nvidia's solution will some how be better than the revolutionary eyeinfinity that must be praised by consumers, regardless of the bezel management issue. Eyeinfinity raised the bar and ati will be known for bringing multi-monitor gaming to the masses, so i give ati kudos for that. But that said, i am pretty certain that i won't be upgrading in 3 years or until something is released that will absolutely blow my mind, because the performance increase generation after generation has been quite sub-par and disappointing the last decade. These incremental performance increases which seem to be a 5-10 fps gain is just pathetic by both of these companies. Basically what these companies are telling us is that they can't do better. Lack of competition? Probably a factor. It's surprising that a 3rd graphics card company hasn't propped up yet. I have a message for both of these companies. Stop these slow incremental performance increases in graphics cards and gouging the consumer with these horiffic prices. And stop categorizing video cards by price by low, mid, and high end, and then marketing them as 'revolutionary' graphics, especially when the low-end provides a horriffic experience. We are tired of what seems like simple refreshes, and we desire ground breaking products in which performance will blow our mind. Not some 5-10fps average performance increase. That may of been fine and dandy before, but not in this age. We know there is technology out there that is far better than what me might consider 'high end. ' look at the movie 'avatar' for example. We want access to those kind of graphics and technology, and we want them soon, other wise we know that you guys are just severely holding the consumer back for your own gain. People are catching on and will no longer buy your products especially with these small incremental performance increases that show no innovation and are simply a way for you to sell a repackaged product with slightly better performance, regardless if the 'architecture' is different, or not. We are tired of this and we won't stand for it much longer. You both will fail if you continue on this path of smoke screen competition. Do not let us down. The world is on to both of you just to let you know, and we will bring both your companies down if you keep these deceitful practices up.

Message: Usb Bandwidth Has Been Exceeded
I have a webcam and i would like to use it , but when i plug it in a little message pops up from bottom and says that the usb bandwidth has been exceeded. My webcam used to work and i cant remember hanging anything recently except something to do with my network. All that is plugged into this computer is, modem, wireless keyboard and mouse, and something called 'psp wifi dongle'. I recently disabled my modem through its properties and plugged my webcam in and it worked fine. But then i enabled my modem again and it wouldn't work. I have tried plugging it in to most of my usb ports most of which are seperate from my modem. Anyone know anything about usb bandwidth exceeded?
