Computer Does Not Turn Off After Shutdown ?

I have an old opteron desktop that i will be using as a home server. The issue i've been having for the past few months is that it will not physically turn off after the os finishes shutting down. It used to, when i was using it as my main desktop, so i have no idea what has changed. What i have tried:

Windows 7 professional x64
Windows server 2008 r2 x64
Windows xp professional sp2
Reset bios
Install nvidia chipset drivers from manufacturer cd
Windows xp sp3
Ubuntu 7. 10
Flash bios to 4/06/2006 from 3/29/2006

Things i have tried since posting:

Unplug hard drives, boot ubuntu livecd, halt

In all of the operating systems i have tried, none can successfully turn off the computer. The only indication that the computer is supposed to have shut off is that i hear something turn off (hard drive maybe), and then all power would normally be cut, but now that sound doesn't happen in xp after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried disabling usb power suspend in server 2008, with no effect. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Edit: the os's shutdown screen remains on the display after it "shuts down". Specs:

Amd opteron 144 1. 8ghz
Dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d (modded to sli-d)
3gb ddr-400
Two geforce 7600 gt (one is out of the machine right now)
Single 160gb ide hard drive
Single 320gb sata2 hard drive

Computer Shutdown

I have a intel 850gb mobo and i formatted my hdd 2x thinking it was a bad install. When i hit start, shudown, not restart the computer goes thru the powering down phrase i hear the familiar click of the hdd whichs turns it off and bam, the hdd is off but the mobo and fans including cpu are still on. I replaced the power supply to no avail. I have to hit the reset button then the power button to quickly too turn off computer. Strange, im thinking the mobo is not sending the signal to the power supply commanding it to turn off. My hdd is new and was working finr, i like to reformat my hdd 2x a year to clean off the mess.

Computer Shutdown Randomly

I built my computer a few years ago and have had no problems (p4). Today it decided to shutdown randomly. I tried rebooting but it would turn on like it was going to start but bios would not post and it would shut down after about 5 seconds. My first inclination was that it was a failing power supply. Replaced that without any luck. The odd thing is that when i plug in both power components from the ps to the mobo it turns on and after five seconds turns off;

Yet, when i do not have the 12v 4pin plugged in, the computer stays running, although it does not load windows. I checked the ram, light on mobo is on, nothing smells fried, i'm hoping it is not the mobo.

Windows Has Been Shutdown To Prevent Damage To Your Computer

When i'm installing from my windows xp disk the initial blue screen comes up saying it's loading all the stuff from the cd basically and then i get the error message as follows:-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer, press f8 and select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information:

*** Stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf748e0bf, 0xf78da208, 0xf78d9f08)

*** Pci.sys - address f748e0bf base at f7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c

I have no idea what would cause this. I'm over-clocking my cpu some some bios settings are changed, could setting them back to defaults solve this issue? It doesn't really make sense to me. Please, i'd be grateful for any advice.

Computer Will Not Turn On

I hit the button and no start-up(worked fine night before). I took off side cover and the cpu fan was spinning and the chassis fans were on, also the front led lights were on although looked dim. The mother board green light was also lit up. The power supply fans(2) were not working at all. So. I figure its the power supply. Almost bought a new one too. But i take the power supply out and stick it in old computer and it works fine. So. I put ps back in new computer and it basically does same thing but not exzactly. Mother board light is on still, fans do not work, led light does not turn on, cpu fan does not work but spins briefly as power is disconnected. (Note: no monitor or any other outputs were hooked up>> this may make the difference?)

Any ideas as to what this is exzactly? The motherboard or power supply possibly even though it is working n another comp, cpu? Or ram? >>Could those cause a complete no start situation? Switch?
Anyone ever hear of this before or have a good idea as to what it could be let me know asap. I don't wanna just start buying and replacing stuff. Also dying without a good computer to play world of warcraft!

I would love to know how to use a multimeter to test the voltages n stuff but afraid to due to lack of knowledge.

It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer

Microsoft's support site had a big checklist to go through, which didn't quite work. When you tell it to shut down, it says the error message "it is now safe. Blah" then you have to do it manually. If you press the power button while the computer is on, it immidiately shuts off. Any ideas?

Computer Turn Off Problem

My computer wont turn off unless i disconnect power cord; it automatically comes back on when i reconnect it? Last night, i went to turn off my computer and i clicked the "install windows updates and then shut-down" button and after the installations, the screen went blank, as if the computer was off, but the computer is still on and it wont turn off. I tried hold the power button for a couple of minutes, it stays on. I tried pressing and holding the restart button, it stays on. I disconnected the power supply, which turned it off, but when i reconnected the cord, the computer came back on again. Screen is still blank. The screen wont show anything. I've never had this problem before and can't find anything on the internet.

Why Wont Computer Turn On?

A few days ago i was on my desktop downloading an anti virus software (ca anti virus) i've had it before but it expired so i was getting another trial thing. And while it was downloading it said that i had to restart my computer in order to finish but it couldn't because there were other users on my computer signed on and that i had to log out and try downloading it again. So i did so but when it finished restarting and i logged back in, nothing popped up saying finished downloading or anything so i waited but got tired and just put the computer to sleep. And i guess it shut down or something im not sure but since then i haven't been able to turn it back on. At first the lights would turn on for about 2 seconds and i heard the fan but it stopped and turned off. Then a few times it would actually start loading and windows will show up on the screen and everything but then it would turn off. And now if we try to turn it on nothing turns on but we still hear the fan. We have to unplug it in order for the fan to stop.

Computer Won't Turn On

At first when ever you pressed to one switch nothing happened at all, so i tried a new psu and that made no difference. I took out the hard drive and graphics card and tested that in my other machine and that works fine, so i know its not them. I then ran a barebones test on the computer (just mobo, processor, memory and graphics card) and it turned on, so i reconnected the harddrive. Once again it would not turn on. I have gone back to the barebones test and while the computer won't turn on i notice that when the powers switched on at the back the fans on the processor and graohics card both start spinning.

Computer Died - Wont Turn On

Whilst playing a game last night, my computer turned itself off and refused to turn back on again. When i try to turn it on, a little led on the motherboard comes on and the fans spin 1/4 of a turn and then nothing. I first assumed it was the psu, but if i switch the power supply with another, i get the same problem. I have noticed that if i remove the 4 pin 12v power connector from the motherboard the fans spin but nothing boots. I therefore presume that the cpu is screwed as this suplies the cpu power. Before i go out and buy another processor, can anyone confirm that this is the problem, or maybe suggest another possability?

On Startup, Computer Will Completely Turn Off

For some reason, on my friend's computer shortly after start up the computer will completely turn off. There was recently an electrical storm in the area, so i believe that may have something to do with it. I managed to get into the computer's setup, and the processor and ram show up. Unfortunately shortly after i looked around in the setup the computer just turned off. When i tried to start it back up, i had to unplug and replug in the psu for the computer to turn on. Is it safe to say the psu is fried? Or could it be something else? Any help is appreciated.

Computer Won't Turn On After Spark

Okay, we use a extension cord where all the sound devices, computer, monitor, printer, etc. Are plugged into. Anyway, as i pressed the extension cords power button, a big spark appeared as well as a loud sound that indicates something has blown up. I seemed to catch where the explosion/spark came from, which was the plug where the computer is plugged into. Anyway, the printer and sound device worked fine, but when i press the button for the computer to turn on, it doesn't. However, the monitor also turns on. So, we changed the surge protectors and even changed where you plug the surge protector in as the old one seemed broken. So. Is the computer broken, overworked and whatnot?

I'm sorry i can't provide you the specs and informative details about the computer because well it won't turn on. I've had that computer for well over 4 years. Anyone know how to fix this problem; i could try my best to provide the specs and whatnot. If no one knows the solution, which would you suggest: give the computer to the local compusa so they could fix it or do we buy a new comptuer?

Computer Wont Turn On With A Pci Express Card

So one of my power supplies died recently and i just replaced it. Well the computer wont turn on with a pci express card in it. Ive tried 2 different cards and same thing. Is there something else i could be missing? As soon as i take the pci express card out everything turns on (case fans etc). Put it in it wont power on. Also the motherboard will give out beeps so possibly something else like cpu? My first inclination would be to change the mobo since thats the cheapest component but not sure.

Computer Won't Turn On Despite Switching Psu

I have a problem. I had to move my room around, so i disconnected the computer and then later the same day reconnected everything. But now my computer won't turn on. At first i thought it was just a power supply problem, because when i tried to turn it on the psu smelled a bit like burning wires, but did not turn on. So i bought a new psu and plugged it in. When i plug it in and turn on the psu, the light from the motherboard flashes for a second (this is normal on my board) but when i try to turn on the computer from the power button, nothing happens. What could it possibly be? I'd have thought it was the mobo, but it flashes like normal. Should i check anything, like the cpu? I'm a bit worried here.

Computer Randomly Turns Off, Wont Turn Back On

My computer randomly turns off. It can run prime95 for 15 min without incident, and it can bit-torrent all night long, but it randomly turns off. Generally this happens while doing a non-cpu intensive activity like watching tv shows. After it turns off (as if it was unplugged, no windows shutdown procedure), pressing the power button does not do anything. Upon further inspection, the psu will not jump-start for a few minutes. After that, the psu will jump-start and the machine will boot up. To me, this sounds like a psu problem. I have a corsair tx750. Is this the likely culprit?

(Edit: i probably should give some more information)

Pc Shutdown - Buzzing Noises

Recently my computer has been randomly shutting itself down. Immidiatly after the shutdown a loud buzzing/beeping noise occurs from the front of the pc. My computer is custom made from the internet, and so i dont know who to contact. The part making the noise is a small black circular object, about the size of a 10c piece. Its connected to my motherboard by a black/red wire. I believe the wire goes next to the wires for my on/off, reset, and on & working lights. I replaced my hard drive as my university technician told me my hd was seizing, however that isnt the problem. Any ideas suggestions to my problem? Or could someone tell me what this noisey black thing is! And how can i fix it!
