Hdd Wont Boot From Disc

Summary of the rambling below:

1. Old hard drive failed, tried to replace it. 2. When i turn on the comp it shows cd rom on primary slave, and hard drive on secondary slave. Is this a problem or wrong?
3. The jumper on the cd rom is set to cable select. 4. Boot sequence in bios is set up to start from cdrom then c. 5.comp won't boot from disc, never gives option "push any key to boot from disc"

I have used this disc to install xp on my other comp and worked fine. And when i unplug the power from the hard drive, it gives the option boot from disc and goes into windows set up. The manager who i bought the hard drive from suggested maybe my cd rom isn't compatible with this newer hard drive?

Rambling begins: hello a couple days ago my hard drive failed in my old pentium 3 comp and yesterday i went out and bought a hard drive from a well known computer store. It's just a semi-used 40 gig hard drive, the manager working there told me he tested it just a day ago and that it had a fresh install of windows xp so he told me it was working. So today i tried installing it in my old pent 3, and it shows up when i start up the comp, it shows the cdrom on ide primary slave and shows the hard drive on ide secondary slave. Is there anything wrong with this? I was told that the hard drive has to be on it's own separate ide cable or at least on the "end" of the ide cable correct? Did i mess up already? The hard drive doesn't have a "key" on it for the correct jumper setting. So i just moved it 4 times until it finally showed up. And should the cd roms jumper be set to cable select, or master? Or slave? Right now it's on cable select and it's showing up as ide primary slave. Anyways, the windows xp disc is in the drive, and i have set it in the bios to boot from cdrom then c drive, but it never gives the option "push any key to boot from disc".

Problem Getting My Pc To Boot From The Xp Disc

For some reason, i have always had a problem getting my pc to boot from the xp disc. I have tried a couple different xp discs and my computer refuses to boot from cd. I have 2 plextors and 1 pioneer. In the bios, i have first boot set to cd rom, then a plextor, then the hard disk. For some reason, if i c hange the order of the devices, still having hard disk in there, or adding both plextors, it wont boot at all even to windows, i'll get an ntdlr messsage, or insert system disk or something like that. Then, after i restart , in the bios boot priority order, i'll see different options, like slot, slot, slot , slot, like 7 different spots with slot in there, but if i change the boot order back to cd rom, plextor, harddisk, then restart, the slots will be gone. Anybody have any ideas how i can boot to cd. My xp is really unstable right now and bogged down.

Hdd Clicking On Boot Up

A older maxtor hdd (model 54098h8) makes the dreaded 'western digital' like "clicking" noise on boot up. The mb doesn't see the drive. It was ok, but started to 'act up' and then went dead. Is this drive toast?

Computer Wont Boot Hdd

I am working with two computers. My friend's is an emachine d4362 (basic specs: p4 3. 0 ghz processor, 3. 2 gigs of ram)

And mine is a soyo dragon. (Basic specs: p4 3. 0 ghz processor, 1 gig of ram)

The emachine had windows xp installed on its hard drive (ide hard drive) and it ran perfectly fine. We wanted to install windows 7 on it, so we put in the disk. It always froze at 16%. So we put the hard drive into my computer, and loaded ran the installer. It again froze at 16%. Another method i had learned of was to install from a usb drive. I did that, but his computer wouldn't boot from usb. Mine, however, did. So we put the emachine's hard drive into my computer, and booted from usb. We successfully installed windows 7. Here is the interesting part. On my computer (the dragon) windows will boot normally, and go to the windows 7 desktop without a problem. When we moved the hard drive back into his computer (the emachine) before it even gets to the "starting windows" logo, the computer automatically restarts. So the moment the hard drive is being accessed it just shuts off and tries booting again. I dont understand. Why will it work on my computer and not his? (Remember, this hard drive was originally in his computer to begin with, we only switched it over because his computer wouldnt boot from usb)

Hdd Not Found On Boot = Disk Error

I recently received a western digital 160gb, as a replacement for a broken western digital 120gb, from western digital. However on boot the hdd is sometimes not found and instead a little clicking noise can be heard, which in turn leads to the primary slave not being found and then a disk error. Usually if i simply turn it off then back on again, then it works fine however sometimes i have to do this multiple times, sometimes i have to turn it off and leave it for a few minutes and sometimes i have to open the case and push all the cables into the back of the hdd and dvdrw a bit more. To me the cables don't feel as though they've come loose and so really this is an exercise of ritual rather than anything constructive, yet it seems to do the job. Once the hdd is recognised the pc works fine and dandy but i'd like to avoid this failure as it is happening more and more. Is this an issue with the cpu, data cables, power cables, hdd, dvdrw, ram?
My system is an asus pundit w/ intel 2. 8ghz, dual 512mb ram, western digital 160gb, sony 8x dvdrw.

Computer Wont Boot - Red Hdd Led

Recently i got a 1. 00ghz celeron (coppermine, 100x10) from a friend for free. I was planning to use it in an older computer of mine, a system with a celeron 433 (mendocino, 66x6. 5). I removed the heatsink, installed the processor, applied thermal grease, replaced the heatsink, closed the system up but when i tried to boot it up, but all i get is the red hdd led, instead of the green "power" led and (older) "turbo" led which both is supposed to be on. The motherboard i tried it on is an asus mew-aml which is supposed to support processors on the 100mhz fsb. I remembered to change the jumpers (because it will only run at 66mhz if i dont). After it refused to boot, i reinstalled the original processor, but i ended up with the same problem. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I need to know if my motherboard is fried.

Message: Reboot & Select Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media

I built my first computer about 2 weeks ago but have noticed a problem. When i turn the computer on it shows the motherboard screen and stays there for approx 15-20 seconds. Then it goes into a black screen stating that i need to "reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. "

I am a bit confused on what this means. If i restart the computer while it shows the message it starts up with no problems. What can i do to have this message no appear as i power on my computer? Also during the shift from one screen to another, the screen blinks in green and other colors. What can this be? Can it be that i have my lcd tv connected to my computer with a dvi to hdmi cable?Besides these issues, everything seems to run great, no overheating at all.

Can't Boot With Cd Rom / Fix Boot.ini

I have a toshiba satelite laptop with windows xp on it. While copying files over the network onto it i got the blue screen with white letters. I had to do a "hard shut down" to turn it off. When i tried to turn it back on it would start to boot and as it begins to load i get the option to boot in normal or safe mode (both give the same result). After the windows xp logo shows i get another screen that says invalid boot.ini, i searched the error on google and i found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184

Ok great! I have the cd i put it in the drive, but it won't boot on the cd, also i tried pressing f everything, delete, esc yadah to get into the bios to make sure its set to boot up on a cd before the hard drive. But nothing seems to work. Does anyone know something else i might be able to try to get the boot.ini reset / uncorrupt or get it to boot up by the cd?

Dvd Writer Cannot Read Any Disc

My dvd rewriter suddenly can not read any disc one day after i did something setup the dvd rewriter as cd writer. My dvd rewriter is:

-Lg tri-dvd formats (dvd+/-r/rw, dvd-ram), -model# gsa-4163b (internal e-ide/atapi)
-16x super multi dvd/cd rewriter
-8. 5gb dvd+r double layer

The detail is i have 4 accounts in my windowxp professional service pack 3. I use to log-in one of the accounts without any problem on reading & burning disc issue. One day i log-in the other account which i never use after this account setup. The system pop up a message right after i logged-in said that i can switch the dvd rewriter to cd burnable writer and i still can switch back to dvd burner function (this is all i can remember what the message mean, i can't remember the exact wordings). After this action, this rewriter (burner) can not read any dvd disc anymore and pop up an error message "the disc has unsupported format in drive d (my burner drive)"

Also, in the beginning, i still can read dvd disc through another dvd-rom (drive e) in my machine even my dvd burner (drive d) doesn't work. But after about a week my dvd-rom can not read dvd disc as well and came up the same error message. Now i have two mal-function dvd-ram(burner) & rom and have ton of back-up files waiting for burning. I'm wondering it won't help even though i buy an new dvd-rewriter to replace it if the issue is from the system not from the device itself and i couldn't find any spot in windowxp system to re-set the dvd rewriter function. I have no cure what i can do next step !

Stuck Disc On Mac Desktop

How to get a stuck disc out of a mac desktop?

1. First of all make sure that the cd drive is not in use by pressing altogether activity monitor. It's in /applications/ utilities. In the utilities folder there's an app called activity monitor. In mac os x, a windowed process (application program) can be killed with the force quitŠ command in the apple menu (option-command-escape, ¥˜‹, ¥ opt+˜ cmd+esc). The activity monitor application (in /applications/utilities) can be used to quit or force-quit any other process, including invisible processes and applications belonging to other users. 2. I don't have a mac but a windows desktop. But i suppose the disposition of the cd/dvd drive is the same. Now, get a sharp knife with no teeth (not a steak knife but a vegetable knife) and with lots of caution, use the lame to gently (very gently) place it on top of the eject device to bring it towards you. You may be lucky and have not broken the cd. If it doesn't work from the top, try the sides. It should help to unblock it. 3. You may also try to use your knife to set the cd inside the drive more in the centre in order to rectify the problem. But that can be delicate as you could spoil your cd.

Cd Drive Wont Rip Songs From The Disc

Some songs got lost in my hdd so i was doing the usual replacing them by ripping them from the cd. The album is stadium arcadium and i tried it with itunes which ripped about 3 songs and then the rest of them it added them but they didn't have any information just the title and the song length was 780 minutes or something like that. Windows media player wont rip them at all and i'm not sure what to do. I've tried installing games and watching dvd's to see if the drive is *** but they work perfectly. Anyone got any ideas it just seems to be this cd and its never out its case and the cd's are both in mint condition.

Mounting An Internal Disc Drive Vertically

I'm going to design my own case. I haven't actually started the design yet, i am just thinking about all of my options. While looking at dvdrw drives, i couldnt help but notice that this sony dvd drive is supposedly able to be mounted in a vertical configuration. I've heard of external drives mounted like this (i actually have a memorex one that can be set upright) but never realised an internal drive could be set vertically

Does anyone have experience with vertical drives besides say, your ps2 or whatever. I am too nervous to use my memorex external burner vertically because it just does not seem safe. Is there any risk in running it vertically (besides tipping it over, which wouldnt be possible with my case)

I guess its kind of a stupid question, they probably wouldnt list it as capable of a vertical config if it wasnt safe. I was just seeing if anyone had experience with this?

Pc Won't Go To Sleep When A Disc Is In The Drive

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, so i decided to post it here for now. I have an evga x58 sli motherboard and an lg ggc-h20l bd/hd-dvd drive. I have s3 sleep mode enabled in the bios. Everything works fine if there is no disc in the drive - the computer goes to sleep when it's supposed to, and wakes up without any problem. If there's a disc in the drive, the behavior is very strange. If i leave or go to sleep and then come back expecting the computer to be asleep, what i find is that the computer is not asleep and the disc drive is being constantly accessed. The hd access light is also lit up. I have no idea why the drive would be constantly accessed since i never leave any apps running that would access the disc drive. Is this an issue with windows explorer or my av software or something?
