Intermittent Keyboard Problem - Keyboard Is Non Responsive

I bought a compaq presario sr1630nx a few months ago and i've noticed an intermittent keyboard problem for the last month or so. I don't know if it's a hardware or a software problem or how i would tell. The keyboard has a ps/2 connector. I have not changed any of the default hardware. Symptoms: i sometimes try to type and no keys on the keyboard do anything. The mouse works fine. I am not aware of performing any particular action before i notice that the keyboard is non-responsive.

Rebooting makes the keyboard work again. This problem occurs with a frequency of 2 times a day to once a week. I've installed more recent keyboard/mouse drivers for this machine (posted on the compaq site), but that's hasn't helped. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Is there a utility that i could run when the problem happens that would give me more information?

When i start playing a game, especially an fps, about every 1-2 mins the mouse becomes non responsive/freezes and sometimes the keyboard "joins in", for about 5 seconds. I haven't updated any drivers before the problem. Its really annoying when playing css i have fixed the crosshair on someones head an not being able to shoot. Looks like it happens randomly. - Vista 32-bit

Das Keyboard / Apple Keyboard With Numeric Keypad

I decided to get a new keyboard, your input would be appreciated. I don't play wow so macro keys are unnecessary. I actually spend most of my time typing up papers, with the occasional fps/rts. These are two keyboards that i'm currently looking at:

Daskeyboard $130

Apple keyboard with numeric keypad $50

Dell Mini Keyboard Smaller Than Normal-keyboard ?

How much smaller is a dell mini keyboard than a normal keyboard? I recently purchased a dell mini laptop and was wondering-how much smaller is the dell mini keyboard than a normal keyboard? I don't want my fingers to feel cramped. I was also wondering how much smaller the screen is. Are items on the screen actually smaller or do you just have to scroll around the window?

Dell mini user's opinions are very welcome.

Desktop Keyboard Like / Feel Laptop Keyboard

My logitech g15 is crapping out and i'm looking for a new keyboard. I don't really wanna spend large amounts of money since it seems all keyboards last ~2 years anyway. I would like a keyboard that has a tactile response almost exactly like a laptop. Anyone have any examples?

Computer Freezes, And Is No Longer Responsive

I've bought a new set up about 2 months ago and i have yet to get it working properly, as it always likes to freeze. The specs are:

- Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l lga 775 intel p35 atx all solid capacitor intel motherboard

- Evga 256-p2-n751-tr geforce 8600 gt 256mb 128-bit gddr3 pci express x16 sli supported video card

- Intel core 2 duo e8400 wolfdale 3. 0ghz lga 775 65w dual-core processor model bx80570e8400

- Thermaltake tr2 w0070ruc 430w atx power supply

- Hynix 512mb ddr2 ram x2

I've never seen the cpu temp go over 39c, even right after a freeze up. What i mean by freeze is that the computer is no longer responsive (no i/o works) and the screen displays the last thing that i was doing, and i have to use the power button to restart the computer. The computer boots just fine, no beeps. I reformatted the hd and installed windows xp, but with windows installed the computer freezes either when "loading personal settings" or 10 minutes after loading windows. It was rare that it would get past loading personal settings w/o freezing though. (I had all of the new drivers for my hardware reinstalled as well).

Then i decided to just try a fresh install of ubuntu linux to see if the problem was just with windows. Ubuntu boots up just fine and if i don't move the mouse that much and just let the computer sit, it won't freeze for days, but after using the computer (just installing stuff, or browsing the internet) for half an hour or so, i'll get a freeze. I also get a freeze when i am in the bios, but only if i go into the menu to switch the vcore to something else. Just going into the menu, not actually changing anything in the menu. Anywhere else in the bios is just fine and won't freeze at all. I ran memtest86 and i always get a freeze (not an error) in test #5, no bsod's have popped up at all, only freezes. Can't think of anything else to say about it, if anyone has any ideas.

Intermittent Pc Crashing

My pc is around 18 months old and i requested a fairly high spec mainly because i am a gamer. I have an asus a8v deluxe mobo, amd athlon 64 3000+ (1. 8 ghz), 1 gig ram, 250 gig hdd, radeon 9600, windoze xp pro sp2 (and directx 9. 0c), sound is realtek ac97. I always update the drivers as they come out (and the usual microsort updates). This crashing problem started about a year ago so i thought it was maybe overheating. I was getting an error message to say the system had recovered from a serious error and the knowledge base said it was probably caused by a driver. I checked the connections and fans were ok. Sometimes i can leave it on all day and it is fine, the next it will reboot itself maybe three or four times on the trot. It doesn't seem to have a particular pattern. Occasionally it will reboot itself into the 'do you want to start windows normally/safe mode' screen, but not that often. Once it said something about overclocking, but i wasn't fast enough to read what it said. Now i know absolutely nothing about overclocking, so could this be part of the problem?

Also, ie closes itself down an obscene number of times a day. I've had the microsoft people check it out via the sharing program and it still closes for no apparent reason. So could this be also part of the problem?

Intermittent Boot Failure

The problem is intermittently the system powers up but fails to even attempt to boot - no bios beeps, and bios and vid. Bios screens not displayed. Drives spin up ok. Have tried different case and psu (in fact system is currently in borrowed case). The system only ever fails to boot if the system is cold-started - the system warm-reboots ok. Tried different ram, had m/b replaced once, new m/b been returned to dealer where they (supposedly) found no problems when tested with other kit and with my psu, but system not been professionaly tested as a whole. Have also tried different graphics card, removing modem and sound card, running system from hdd only, but still having problems. All connectors are firmly seated. There are no config options in bios or jumpers for ram and the cpu is set up correctly and automatically. Have used 375 and 300w psus with system (300w seemed better then system started playing up again)
Nvidia geforce4 mx440 agp8x graphics card (8x is supported by m/b), and have also tried geforce2 4x. The os may be irrelevant, but i've tried winxppro, win2000, winnt4, mandrake linux 9 and a linux distro that boots from cd (knoppix). All drivers installed ok. Won't even bother with win9x/me because i hate it.

Intermittent Wireless Problem

Every 10 to 15 minutes i loose connection to the internet when i use my laptop ibm x60s in wireless mode in my home network. At my office i have no wireless issues. The access point is a netgear wpn 802 which in turn is hardwired to a netgear fvs 318 router. All of the other computers are hardwired and connected directly to the router with solid uninterrupted connections. There are no outward indication of a network failure except outlook can no longer find the exchange server or a site cannot be found in ie. During the failure the wireless connection says i am connected to an excellent and strong signal. The connection recovers when i click repair. Lenovo/ibm replaced the minipci card with no change in symptoms. I have uninstalled zone alarm so it's not part of the problem. I use the ibm access connections as the software to control the connection. Web zero is not active and is off. Do you guys have any ideas what i should look for as a next step. I have not yet talked to netgear since i have no way to definitely eliminate the computer as the source of the problem. Are there any recommendations how to discuss this problem with netgear to get the best help.

Intermittent Program Crashes On Xp Pro System

What is a good stress/burn in test to test new pcs or diagnose intermittent problems? I'm having very intermittent program crashes on my xp pro system myself but also would come in handy as i have to build two pcs for family members. In particular i would like programs that do a thorough memory test. I work in electronics so i know good memory tests that test every cell of the memory and do complement read/writes etc. Can take a long time as opposed to quick boot up type memory tests. Free programs of course are best but would pay for a killer program that was really good.

Looking For New Keyboard

Looking for new keyboard. As an old-school computer user, i have always used these old clackety clack keyboards. Either scavenged old keyboards or newer ones based on old technology. (At the moment i use keytronic kt1000, great keyboard) reason is simple, i can press almost unlimited number of keys at the same time, no matter what the combination. When keyboards at first started "evolve in technology" to smaller and lighter ones, the ability to press multiple keys was lost or at-least it was limited to certain combinations. Is it still this case in nowadays? (I haven't followed the evolution of keyboards, really) while my trusty keytronic is still functional, there is a thing that i would like to have: back-lighted keys. This would be so handy when playing in the dark whenever you suddenly loose "the feel" where the keys and your fingers are!

But this pressing multiple keys is a question mark. Being able to press any keys at the same time in any combination is important for me as a gamer. One thing though, macro keys are not needed. Never felt the need for them with my old keyboards, and most likely they will remain unused in possible new ones, so personally i would like to not have them at all, they would just make the keyboard bigger.

How Much Would You Pay For A Keyboard ?

I am considering getting a razor lycossa mirror gaming keyboard which is more or less in my budget, now i never knew a keyboard could cost so much until i saw the price on their tarantula keyboards. All this because i recently (yes just recently) added a blue cathode tube to my antec 902 & now i want a keyboard which glows in the dark to go with it so i can sit here, play in the dark & enjoy my master peice. Would you pay almost $100 for a gaming keyboard or is $80 more then enough?

No Power To Keyboard

I just bought a used motherboard on ebay to replace the one in kids computer. Also replaced the power supply with one of 500 watts. Hoping the cpu is still reusable. Have no way to test it. When taking apart the kids computer that's worked for over a year. I noticed their motherboard had blown capacitors, later seeing the power to the motherboard was burnt and melted in some spots o both the psu and the motherboard connections. (Since bought them a better surge protector). The problem i'm having with the computer is i'm not getting power to the keyboard. I have nothing installed in pci slots. Using one stick of pc3200 memory. I am getting the post (which is reading the memory, hard drive and cpu fine) i've reset the cmos, leaving out the battery for hours. Removed the motherboard making sure nothing was shorting it out. However i didn't try it powered outside the case. I can't get into the setup without the keyboard, and it doesn't boot to hard drive or cd. Fans are all working fine. Post is telling me i reset the cmos. Press f1 to continue or delete to enter setup. I purchased a usb keyboard which also isn't working.

Keyboard Is Messed Up

I recently spilled something on my microsoft intellitype pro natural ergonomic 4000 keyboard and, after letting it dry and all that stuff, it started to mess up the keyboard keys. Now, "f" types both "f" and "space" and vice versa, "o" brings up the "my favorites key assignment screen, "5" or ". " Brings up both a "5" and ". " Together and finally, maybe the worst, "comma" brings me to the last page i visited. (Luckily, as i was typing this, i also found that the page is always exactly as i left it, so all the words i struggled to type so far are still there when i go forward in my browser history. )

Now i play a lot of fps games on this computer and this is very very irritating to me. Is there any way to fix this without buying a new keyboard all together?
