Laptop Hdd Interface Unknown

I bought a used dell lattitude cpx to build a digital picture frame with. I want to remove the harddrive and replace it with a flash part. My original idea was to get a $20 ide to compact flash adapter, however, my laptop isn't ide and i'm not really sure what it is. It might be some kind of mini-scsi. Here is a link to a picture of the interface, does anyone know what that interface is?

The drive itself is some kind of mini-ide, and the drive bay converts the mystery interface to mini-ide, i guess i can always do this. Mystery interface -> mini-ide - using the drive bay itself
Mini-ide -> ide - i'm assuming i can find that adapter online somewhere
Ide -> compact flash - i've seen these adapters around for about $20

Am i overlooking something? With all of these connectors is there any problem getting power to the flash chip?

Dell Laptop Hdd Upgrade

Ok, so my dell laptop came with a 7200rpm 120gb hdd which is fine and dandy. But it's been getting a little cluttered lately (at one point i had 16mb free, now i'm out to 23gb). So i'm looking into expanding. I see that newegg has a 320gb seagate 5400rpm drive for only $100 and it's quite enticing. So here's my question. If i upgrade, i'll probably dual boot vista/ubuntu, and possibly triple boot throwing in os x leopard for funsies. My question is, for convenience sake, instead of having to mess with weird cloning methods (weird because i'd need an external enclosure for the new drive to clone) could i instead just install vista fresh on the new hdd and then use the full system restore i've created in vista to then restore it back as if nothing changed?

After that's set, i'd go on with the multi-boot fun.

Using Laptop Hard Drive As External Hdd

Can i use a hitachi hard drive from my old laptop, in a external hard drive? So i recently took apart my old compaq laptop and took out the hard drive, cd drive, speakers, etc. I broke my old external hard drive and was able to swap the hard drive with another external hard drive, and it works. But can i use my old computer hard drive on my old external hard drive. Answer:-
Yes, you always can turn a internal hard drive to be an external like everybody else here is describing it to you just buy a small shell case if is a laptop hard drive, and as suggestion i do not know how much stuff do you store but if you are going to build it why not use a bigger capacity hard drive, my sources to buy them will be: circuitcity.com, ebay.com and microcenter.com. Do your search for external hard drive shell/case.googd luck with it.

When i power it on now i hear the cpu fan start up and after about a second a click and then the whole thing shots down. Then, after 2 seconds the fan comes on again but nothing else happens. I know this is a long shot but can anyone sugest what i may have done wrong?

Hdd Failing

So unfortunately i'm thinking one of my hd's might be failing so i was looking to see if you guys had any ideas. Basically i was just coding up some script and when i hit save my comp locked up. (I wasn't save or writing to this particular hd at the time) and i hear this high pitched tone come out of my speakers (not my system speaker). I went ahead and restarted the machine and as it was booting up it seems to take a long time at a black screen in between the windows bootscreen loading bar and the windows login. Eventually it loads and i sign in and the drive no longer shows up like it used to. Essentially, here's what my hd list now looks like:

Server (_stuff_) (v:)
Server (_stuff_) (w:)
Server (_stuff_) (x:)
Local disk (y:)
Server (_stuff_) (z:)

Ontop of it showing up like that i can't open the drive. If i even so much as right click on that drive explorer locks and i have to end-task and relaunch it. Also, i went ahead and ran a s. M. A. R. T. Checker on it and although the results mean nothing to me (im not sure what to look for) the status of everything seems to be fine: lastly everything seems to look fine when i do a chkdsk on the drive as well: i dont really know what else to do except wipe it and try to use it but i'd like to avoid that option as i have 400gb of stuff on it. That being said, any ideas?

Hdd Error

The user has a dell dimension 8200, with xp home. There is only one hd in the system, it is set as a master. The motherboard that i replaced had gotten fried. The reasoning behind why i think that is because the bios would not find either the cdrom or hd; both of which were connected to different ide slots. So i replaced the board, and the bios finds the cd-rom, but not the hd. I tested the hd in another machine and it works fine. I have tested the ide cable i'm using, as well as the molex plug providing power, both work fine. The psu is fine. I uninstalled all unnecessary devices, and still no luck. The bios detects it as an unknown device. I tried loading wd datalifeguard tools, but it can't read the drive either. The last thing i can think of is flashing the bios, which i'm not wanting to do. It seems as though the bios doesn't know where to look for the drive, or it's not obtaining the proper i/o address or dma channel?

Xbox Hdd

Ok so my friend took the western digital 8gb out of his xbox, and he gave it to me. I want to use it as an extra slave for music, and no matter now i set the jumpers or which spot i set it on the ide cable it will not show up. I also tried it as a master and putting an os on it, no go, still won't work. Does anyone know why the hdd won't work ? Does microsoft do something to them to make them only function in an xbox?

Ok i have the enermax temp & fan controller for my 3 1/2 bay, and whenever i turn my fans up on my vantec nexus the alarm goes off on the evermax that the other fan speeds are dropping, even though i have no fans connected to the enermax ctrl. What could cause this? Only thing i could think of is they are on the same line from the psu and when i increase voltage on one the other looses? I'm going to disassemble tomorrow or next week to check out the situation. Last q is about bf1942. When it opens and the 1st ea screen comes up the sounds is crackling like a mofo and its choppy, its like that all the way to the main menu. Then when i join a server and it loads everything is smooth as skilk. Anyone know why?

I tried changing the sound settings to default, and then to support my hardware (in sig). But it didn't make a difference. And bf1942 is the only game it happens with. Oh and hes going to be putting some led's in his xbox controller dongles, what kind of inverter will we need for the led's ?

Ramdisk To Hdd

I have recently been building my server. Now that i have 8 gb of ram, i'm wondering if i can somehow create a ramdisk on the server and then share it. Writing files to it across the network will be nice and quick i'm assuming. Is there a way to say, once the ramdisk gets full, write that data to a local hdd on the server? So basically the file goes:

Remote computer -> ramdisk share on the server -> local storage hdd on the server. I'm thinking this would increase the write speed to the server. Do you guys know of any way of doing this?

(Note: please no comments of "get faster hdds!" Or anything like that. In the future i plan on it, and i just want to see if the above is doable, for *** and giggles. )

Switch Hdd

Is there a limit to how many hdd's you can have connected to your motherboard at anyone time. Limited by the master/slave connection? And if so. Wouldn't it be cool if you could have like 5 hdd's inside your pc pre-connected but not operating. And if you needed to switch. Rather than having to open the case up and *** about disconnecting. Would be good if you could just flick a switch to change over. Does this already exist. (I take it this couldn't be done when the computer is running)

Hdd Drive Setting

I've added a new hdd to the system but it has not been given a drive label. Device manager read the hdd after first o/s boot, and sees properly what it is. It also states the drive is working properly and drivers are most recent. Yet i cannot see or access the drive (my computer, dos etc). Physically the connections are well. The hdd has no jumpers and is running off the slave connection of the cable. Bios however, states that group 2 is cd drives, group 3 is hdd drives and group 4 is networking drives. It also states that the main hdd is on the the third controller, on it's own, while the new hdd is a slave to the second controller where the master is the cd drive. Oddly enough, the group 3 hdd priority lists the new hdd as main, and the original hdd as secondary, yet the computer boots straight off the main(original) hdd without a hitch. The main hdd is also paritioned (safety recovery partition) so effectively it's using c: and d:. E: is for the cd. F, g, h, i are removable usb storage and j: is a virtual cd drive. I tried to take a stab at command line with "k:" but invalid.

Hdd Recovery Issue

I have a serious hdd recovery issue, and don't know what to do. I have a 160 gig hdd, primary and secondary is the same. I started my comp (desktop) today and suddenly it went 100% working, and i cudnt even do shift+ctrl+esc for the task manager ( os: xp pro sp1). Its been stable for a long time so all configuration is fine. This is a instant error due to some anomaly , not configuration! Ok, so after a while i pushed the restart button. This must of corrupted the drive as it was reading or writing, as now the mobo detects the hdd, but yet it is not working (i/o error). The mbr doesnt detect the disk, (i get a geometry error, due to secondary disk being listed probably as primary. ) The boot loader is grub as i have a linux box as well on prim disk. This has nothing to do with the grub being corrupted either. It simply is that the primary hdd is having an i/o error, cos i restarted the computer while it was working? I have never seen a hdd been damaged by this before, and wondering if it was some malicious code, running the hdd on purpose like that to ruin it?

In any case, xp recovery doesnt work, and no point in resetting the mbr surely as my disk is recognised, but not accessible. Is there *any* way for me to fix the i/o, or somehow does anyone know a fix for such a problem. Please help, as i keep 4 logical partitions on the physical drive, and as long as it has this i/o error, i cannot format it and rerun an os installation on the c partition.

Salvaging A Failed Hdd

I've just had my laptop's hard drive fail on me [37 year mtbf my ***] and while i'm sure i can collect on the warranty from samsung, there's alot of data i'd like to pull from the disk before i have to ship it off. I've heard the most likely culprit is a failed bearing, and cooling it in the freezer can bring it back to life for short periods, so it's currently being chilled. But i'm wondering if anyone might have additional tips for pulling data off the drive. One of the more extreme ideas that's hit me is to run network and power into the freezer and just have the whole laptop live there while i back up my data, but i'd like a second opinion on whether or not this would be a smart move.

Cant Install External Hdd

Ive just put one of my "maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160gb ata/133 hdd (6y160p0)" - disks into a "techsolo tmf-3560" external storage case. The harddrive is jumpered as master, but i get the same problem when setting it to "cable select" and "slave". When i connect the case to my acer 5024wlmi with usb 2. 0 i get this error message:
"Found new hardware

A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly. "
After that nothing happens. The device manager keeps updating, but doesent find or install anything. Cant find it in "disk management" either. Both my mp3-player and my usb-mouse connect without any problems. I use windows xp professional corporate, sp2 with all the updates (windows xp professional (5. 1, build 2600) service pack 2 (2600. Xpsp. 051019-1519)). I tried my external drive on my machine with win2003ent, and it worked just fine. But i get the same problem on my third computer also using xp pro corp sp2.

Vhs To Hdd Transfer

I'm attempting to put all of my older vhs tape media on my pc's hdd. My vcr is older as it only has audio/video in and out rca jacks and of course a cable f-jack (believe that's what a normal cable jack is called), not even an s-video jack. My video cards are xfx 7800 gt's extreme editions in which i believe has vivo. Also i have a pvr-500 dual tuner tv card hooked up to my makeshift htpc setup. This might be the most feasible way to capture video from my vcr, but i'm a little sketchy on how to go about doing it.
