Raid-0 Current Drives Or Faster Single ?

Been a long time since i've added new hardware to my machine (long for me anyway). Have been getting my modding fix with the car for the past year or so. Anyway, i am looking on upgrading the hd portion of the computer. Current drives are listed in sig, consisting of two wd 320gb (single platter) drives and a wd 500gb. I am debating on either putting the two current wd320gb drives in a raid-0 config, which i prefer, assuming they will be the fastest option. The other choice would be to go with something like a larger single drive such as a samsung f3. For the two drives in raid-0, i am in need of a good cheap hardware controller, which is a piece of hardware i really don't have much knowledge about. So i am stuck at either finding a cheap hardware controller or if the cost it to great then jumping to a single larger drive. What are your thoughts/opinions? Can anyone recommend a controller making these two drives worth staying with?

Using Sataraid5 - Adding More Drives To Current Raid ?

I am using a rosewill rsv5. It has 5 bays for hard drives to raid and uses sataraid5. I added 2 new drives to my existing 2 in the box. I boot up the manager tool, i see my existing 2 raided drives (concatenated) and the 2 individual new drives. All 4 are the exact same make and model. I formatted them with computer manager. How do i add them to my current concatenated raid group? Also, how would i convert the concatenated (which i believe is the same thing as raid 0) to another raid format? Right now they are blue in the sataraid5 manager utility and i cannot make them into another raid

Single Ssd With Raid 0 Spinning Drives

I a question concerning a raid (stripe) partition. I have 3 drives in my system. A ssd 30gb vertex (that windows 7 is on). A 640 wd blue and a 1tb wd black

What im wanting to do is create a raid array out of those 2 spinning disks just for data storage. Likely 3 partitons, which would be a total of little over 1100gb. After i install win7 on the ssd. I was thinking maybe like 35gb partition for the docs/temp/page file (i moved all temp, and pagefile off the ssd). 400gb partition for games
And remaining 700 and something for videos/music

If i create this all based on the 640gb drive, that should leave 300ish gb unallocated on the 1tb drive. Will i be able to use that unallocated space for acronis secure zone back up area, even though it will not be a raid, or will i just loose all that space all together. I was going to use the intel matrix storage also if that matters.

Single Intel X-25m Vs Ocz Vertex Drives In Raid 0

I'm trying to decide whether or not to purchase a single intel x-25m 80gb gen. 2 drive or two ocz vertex 60gb ssd drives that i'd configure in raid 0. One of the primary selling points of the intel x-25m is it's random read/write speed, which tends to be what your os does most of the time in its daily activities. I know the ocz vertex along with pretty much every other non-intel drive can't compare to the intel in this area. However, i'm wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge of how much random read/write performance of the vertex would improve as a result of a raid 0 configuration. Would it bring it up to speed of a single intel x-25m drive, or would it still not compare. Does raid even help in this area, or does it primarily boost sequential read/writes?

What Will Perform Better When Rendering Hd Video, A Faster Hd Or Raid ?

I am in the process of building /upgrading my machine. I am a gamer but also do a ton of hd video editing from my canon hf100. My question is this. What will perform better when i am rendering hd video, a faster hd or raid? Should i swap my wd 1tb sata 7200rpm drive for a 10k rpm hard drive or go with another 1tb drive and raid it? Which one will perform better for my rendering?

* 4gb kingston value ram pc2-6400
* Evga 8600gts 512mb

Single Ssd Drive To Raid 0

I got an extra 60gb vertex ssd for christmas. I am wanting to put them in raid 0 configuration. The issue is i already have a 60gb vertex ssd as my main os drive. Is there an easy way to migrate from a single ssd to raid 0 configuration without having to do a complete reinstall?

Will The 1tb Perform Faster Than 2 74gb Raptors In Raid 0 ?

So i've been looking at a 1tb wd black hdd. They seem reasonable priced and i am running out of room on my 250gig storage drive. My question is, will the 1tb perform faster than 2 74gb raptors in raid 0?

From what i hear the answer may be yes because of greater platter density on the 1tb but can anyone shed some light on this?

Why Does Raid Make The Hard Drive Run Faster ?

I am a newbie at this and have never set my hard drives to raid. I have two 150 gb wd velociraptors but i have them set up as two separate drives. Why does raid make the hard drive run faster? I thought that the purpose of raid is to have data stored in the drives in an identical manner so that if one of the drive stop working, then you still have the other drive as a back up and all of the informations will not be lost. It kinds of counter-intuitive to think that running two drives and accessing data and writing data on the "two" drives would be faster. I thought that it would slower to "do things" on two drives because you have to work twice as hard.

Moving From Raid 0 To 1tb Sata Ii Single Drive

When i built my current high performance rig last october, i noticed the raid0 performance kinda sucked. The benchmark score on these old 80gig drives are nowhere near up to par with a new sataii drive. So i just ordered a 1tb western digital wd10eads drive. I plan to ghost the the raid0 to this new drive and then remove the raid setup all together. Anyone done something similar recently? The performance advantages now a days with raid0 is questionable. Storage bandwidth with sata ii more than makes up for any performance gain from striping 2 drives. The idea originally was drop frame free video capturing on a pc. But times have changed. Dv capture need sustained 3. 4mb/s throughput. That is a drop in the bucket now! But in the old days it was hard to achieve on a system with out raid0.

Do I Need Raid Enabled Drives For Software / Firmware Raid ?

First off, i am completely aware of the fact that you need a re drive with tler enabled for correct hardware raid. My question though is tler needed for software (windows and linux) or firmware (onboard or fakeraid) raid setups? Will these implementations drop a hdd if it spends too much time correcting a read/write error?

In a single drive scenario, the drive will attempt to read/write the same sector for up to 60 seconds and then remap it if possible. In a hardware raid scenario, the controller will tell the failed drive to remap to a new sector with data from a good redundant drive (raid 0 not apply here). My second question is if indeed you do need a tler enabled drive because the controller will drop the hdd, then what will handle read/write errors? Will these software/firmware raid controllers do the same error recovery?

If there is no error recovery, it would seem that software/firmware raid are just bad news. This is esp true for firmware raid which would seem to have all the downsides of the other controller types and none of the benefits. Third question deals with ssds. Are there only certain ones qualified for raid and 24x7 usage? I have not seen a distinction like i have with hdds. Also, are these going to work properly in a raid 5, as the controller will want to try and fix any errors like they are hdds, yet the ssds have very good internal error correction.

What Causes Usb Flash Drives To Be Faster / Slower ?

Lately i feel i have a good understanding of what makes ssd disk drives run fast or slow from model to model. However i've seen similar behavior from usb flash drives (some are zippy across the entire capacity; others slow to a crawl once you load them up with some files). Any idea what the basic design of such a device is such that some devices can sustain 30mb/sec reads and writes until the device runs out of space, while others quickly run out of steam, and still others were never fast to begin with?

Raid 10 Or Raid 1 And Which Drives - For Storage

I am currently building my storage server and need some help with my decisions. I would like to get some 2tb drives in a raid array. I have narrowed down my choices to either a raid 10 array using 4 drives, or just a basic raid 1 with 2 drives plus a hot spare for a 3 drive array. Both would give me 4tb of space, and while raid 10 may not give me a big enough performance gain to warrent the price of a fouth drive it does give me the potential to loose 2 drives without data loss. This will be for streaming large (~5-10gb) files across an internal gigabit network. The questions i pose for the masses:


1) array do you think will work best for my situation, and causes me the least amount of issues? I am not worried about the price of a fourth drive, that is not the concern with raid 1, its ease of use. 2) drives do you guys recommend? I am talking sata desktop class drives, and i have heard nothing but bad things about wd green drives when put in an array. I think both of my raid choices are fairly basic, but i do want to want rebuild array on a regular basis due to drop outs or other crazyness. 3) raid controller card do you recommend? I do not need full harware raid, nor do i want the price tag of one. The server will not get beat up that bad to worry about the cpu tax from an economy level controller.

Raid 0+1 With Three Drives

Shortly, i'm going to have an extra 1tb drive. Currently, my desktop has a raid-1 of two 500gb drives (specs in profile). Does anyone know if it is possible to do a setup where the two 500gb drives would function as a raid-0 stripe, and the 1tb drive could mirror the stripe? If anyone has any information, i'd appreciate it.

Raid 5 With None 24/7 Drives

I simply have nothing but trouble trying to get opensolaris working with my hardware so iam tempted to just go hardware raid5 with my lsi 8 port controller and my 1tb wd gp drives but is it very unsafe to do without raid drives rated for 24/7 usages? I would start with 7 drives but would add another in a short time so all my 8 ports are filled.

Unstriping Raid Drives

I have two wd80bb drives striped on an eio ap1680 raid card. I would like to unstripe the drives so that i can use them individually in separate machines. When i have removed one drive and reconnected to the mobo ide controller i cannot reformat the drive either through fdisk or during the xp installation process. Am i missing something? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Using Desktop Drives For Raid

The thing about a home raid system is that you're not an enterprise with a multi-million dollar it budget, so the cost of the drives does matter. You just want a good, safe place to put all your pictures, personal files, and music. And if you're like me you think it'd be just grand if you could rip your 1000+ dvd/blu-ray collection and play them all from your home theater screen using something like this. The thing is, you can build a state of the art server/raid array combo for quite a reasonable price these days. The thing that really adds up are the drives. So you buy an enterprise class raid card capable of raid-6 (and later on raid-60) which means that two drives can catastrophically fail without suffering data loss. To me that's a great reason to use cheaper desktop class drives (remember that while we don't want to lose data, we're not a massive-budget enterprise either). Of course the biggest issue we run into using these type of drives in combination with an enterprise class raid card is the time limited error recovery issue (tler aka cctl). So we want to pick our drives carefully. Unfortunately there is nothing so nice as wdtler available for any drives but western digital; and they are actually so greedy (for you to buy their 2x priced enterprise drives, even for a simple home raid) that not only did they change firmware to prevent the utility from permanently changing the settings-they actually went out of spec and disabled s. M. A. R. T. Sct error recovery functionality as well. Which is enough reason for me to never consider patronizing them again. Which brought me to seagate vs hitachi vs samsung. Seagate has had some ridiculous horror stories recently after their acquisition of maxtor (is anyone really surprised?) And as much as i have been a huge fan in the past i just couldn't bring myself to trust that their latest generation of drives meet muster. Samsung on the other hand seems to have a very small market share, and generally little information available on the internet. Which leaves hitachi (aka ibm). But not really, because ibm drives basically sucked. But apparently after hitachi took over ibm's had drive division things really improved. You can find posts on the internet saying ". I will never buy from this manufacturer again because the drive i ordered was doa. " For pretty much every single drive/manufacturer out there. But for hitachi's recent lines the level of satisfaction seems to be quite high (compared especially to seagate). Soo. I have decided to give them a try. Besides, they have tons of detailed documentation and utilities available on their website (see below). Therefore, i have purchased 8 hitachi 7k2000 drives for use in a raid-6 array on an adaptec 5085 adapter. This should give me just shy of 11 usable terabytes (2tb really means 1. 8 and raid-6 being n-2 so 6*1. 8)-a great start. Without getting into system details (which for now doesn't matter much) i will add to the discussion with what i have learned. First and foremost, the adaptec card cannot even finish a build/verify on the raid-6 without one of the drives dropping (having done nothing but hook up the raid box to the adapter and attempt to create a raid). This was somewhat surprising, as i did check each drive's s. M. A. R. T. Attributes (using smartctl 5. 38, from gparted live) prior to insertion in the raid box and everything is fine. I knew i would have to address the cctl (aka tler) issue; i just didn't think it would affect me right out of the gate. So, currently this is what i'm doing and why:

1) use the hitachi feature tool to:

1a) disable the write cache on each drive. This is because the raid card should be the one managing writes; and when it performs a write, it should do so with the expectation that each drive has actually written the data right then and there. This prevents a situation where a power loss to the raid box could result in data loss that the adapter/os would never be aware of. Additionally, the erc write timeout value should not have to be set (this is a good thing, follow the links below on sct write timeout specification as to why). And yes, the adaptec card has an option for supposedly disabling write cache on all connected drives, but to be safe i'll force it on the drive side. 1b) enable power management with value 128 (0x80). As i am planning on using this array in a home environment, allowing the drives to reach idle states will save a substantial amount of electricity, furthermore the raid card *should* be capable of spin-down as well, adding further to potential savings. Dollar-wise the savings pale in comparison to the cost of the drives, but since there is no actual need (in my application) to have them constantly running at full power, it is still a good idea. 2) use the hitachi drive fitness test to perform an advanced test on each drive (this takes hours) to verify that each drive is truly in prime condition. The above mentioned tools are available at the following url:

Now, after having done all of this there should (theoretically) be one final step, and that is to set a read erc timeout. I won't finish performing advanced tests on all drives until a few days hence, so for now i will just add what information i have learned, and later update with results. So the first tool i came across for changing sct error recovery values is the famed hdat2. It works, you can plug the drive directly into an sata port and access it, change the value for read timeout to 70 (7000 ms/7s) and it sticks through reboot. The problem is, i haven't figured out any way to use it while the drive is plugged into the raid box and that box is connected to the adaptec 5085. If anyone knows how please let me know and i'll try it just to let people know. In the meantime, since values changed via s. M. A. R. T. Sct do not keep after power has been removed (e.g. Unplug the drive from the direct connection to the computer and plug it back into the raid box) it is not a very useful tool for my purposes. After all, if you have the drives directly connected to your computer (not using a hardware raid card) you will likely want to use zfs, and then read/write timeout values will be a non-issue anyway. The other issue with the hdat2 approach is that inevitably your raid box will lose power at some point (even if you have a ups, which i do). Reasons include moving equipment, long term power failure, etc. Lets face it, we're building the raid because we want a highly reliable, low administration, home storage network. Having drives revert after power loss and having to remember to re-run an application doesn't meet that criteria. Having a service on server boot check (and if necessary set) those values however does. Which is why i have extremely high hopes for this. I haven't gotten around to porting his patch to smartmontools 5. 39 yet, but if it works as advertised i'll be able to have a simple script run on server boot that checks the read recovery timeout value, and if necessary sets it to 70. I will post back later with my experience once i have all my drives tested and have tried this. For information on error recovery control, and specifically the sct commands to set timeouts see:-

6 Drives For A Raid Array

I have been out of the hd loop lately, doing a new server for work, and yes sas is out of the question due to cost, i was able to get a nice raid card, arc-1680ix-16. So with that i need some good sata drives to go with it in the 500g or larger range. For now i have 6 segate 500g es2 drives that will be temporarily used, but will go to another older server once i move things over, so i need some replacement drives. I know wd has "raid" edition drives and such, and i have heard here and there of certain drives wont play nice in raid and so on, so i want to get some recommendations from people who have used 6 or more drives in raid 50, 60 or 10 and had no issues.

Raid Zero For The Os With 2 Data Drives

I have a dell xps system. I have two wd 640gb caviar black drives. I also have two 500 gb wd blue drives, and a 1tb black drive by wd, so i guess i need a raid controller, for the two 640gb blacks to set up raid zero

Do i need anything else for the data drives? Or can i use the connections on my motherboard? What do i look for when buying a raid controller? Can anyone recommend one?

Slow Hard Drives, Raid 0

I have 2 wd800jd (or soemthing like that) and one's an se and one's not, but there's no difference except for the fact that one's older, but they're still the same thing and later they renamed the drive. So why is my raid 0 slower than a standard 5, 400rpm hard drive? Is it the model thing, because this is unbelievable. Startups are like a normal computer (but mine's high-end, it should be faster) and i've recreated the raid array 3 times so far, but it's always slow in sisoftware sandra. It's really annoying.

Looking To Raid 0 New Vertex Drives, But Have A 780i

So i couldn't resist any longer. I just bought 2 ocz vertex 60 gig drives, and i plan on setting them up raid 0 and loading windows 7 on them. I did my research as far as setting them up, but i noticed that the nvidia chipset, well, sucks a lot of ass for raid, and that's putting it nicely. I'm really sort of screwed with my options as well. I like my 780i, haven't had any problems, but i'm not going to pay a lot of money, be an early adopter, and not get the performance i should out of these drives. So option one is to dump my motherboard for one with ich10r. Problem with that is i run sli, which i don't want to get rid of, and i think there is only one board i've found (gigabyte) that can do sli, but both pcie slots are 2. 0 x 16. They are 20. 16/8. Option 2 is to just go i7, but i'm not ready to take that plunge yet. I'd have to get another motherboard, processor, and unless i get the new evga board that is $299, i'd have to sell my gtx 260's and buy some ati cards to crossfire. Lots of money i don't really want to drop on top of the $420 i just spent. Sure, i could sell my old stuff, but that probably wouldn't even make up half the price of the new stuff. Option 3, and the one i'm leaning towards, is to get a perc5i pcie hardware raid controller. I have a question though, to those of you who use these and have sli. Will it fit underneath the sli bridge? I had a fatality sound card that just barely made it, and from the looks of the 5i, it might be a tad taller. I know my 780i has a lot of room, but with two double slot cards, i only have the middle slots open for any other card i want to put in there. Edit

Oh, and will the 5i work well (or at all) with windows 7? I heard the drivers can be an issue. Bah, i'm so bitter, i really like my 780i. Any thoughts?

Raid Adapter For 6+ 1.5tb Drives ?

Ive researched areca, adaptec, 3ware, highpoint, and promise raid cards. None of them say they "support" the seagate 1. 5tb drives. Adaptec 5805 gets close with the st31500341as. So: i need some help selecting a raid controller that will work with these drives and have good to great performance. Does anyone have any real world experence with these drives and running a hardware raid without any issues? Ive looked through the 10tb+ club and see the adaptec cards pop up a lot. Any helpful information would be great. Im trying to avoid spending $500 on a card and find out its not going to work.

Transferring Os Onto New Hard Drives Then Raid

I bought two caviar 640gb and i intend to use them in raid0 for my vista 64. This would be transferring out my old wd3200aaks and setting it aside. Can someone please instruct me the first steps i would need to do this. Logically, i assume i need to clone the old drive onto one of the new ones. Then i should setup up raid. If someone can direct me the proper tools to do so, that'll be most helpful. Also, i'm curious about short stroking since someone people brought it up in larger storage media. My plan if all goes well is 2x640gb os raid0 plus 1x1tb archive which hasn't arrived yet.

Should Ncq Be Enabled For Drives In Raid ?

I was in a discussion with someone that insisted that ncq should be disabled on drives that are in a raid since the controller card knows the situation better and can do the ncq itself. They cited as proof the fact that enterprise drives have ncq disabled. I'm fairly confused about the subject myself now, as i can't seem to find any concrete info online so i'm asking here in hopes that more experienced folks can answer. 1) as far as i can tell and from searching, ncq is a function that requires both the drive and controller to have it enabled (along with the corresponding driver support on the os side); is this true or not?

2) are enterprise drives shipped with ncq disabled and what would be the reasoning behind doing so? Compatibility perhaps?

2 Wd Black 1tb Drives In Raid 0

I ordered two western digital black 1 tb drives yesterday as a bit of an upgrade for my sig machine. Right now i've got two seagate 250gb 7. 2k drives in raid 0 (using the asus maximus ii's built in raid). I've got that array split 250/250 for winxp x64 and win 7x64 beta. I'll have my official win 7 pro x64 tomorrow, so i thought i'd upgrade the drives while doing the os installs. Also have 2 500gb 7. 2k drives for storage (1 wd, 1 seagate). I read somewhere that there may be problems running raid with these black drives now that wd has 1tb re3 drives. Any truth to this? I saw the 1tb wd re3 drives on newegg - $174 per drive seems a bit excessive for my purposes (now days, mostly blu-ray -> 720p/1080p encoding. I'll be getting the drives tomorrow, but figured i should find out before i open 'em up and discover i can't run raid 0 reliably.

I am looking for an external hard drive that contains two 1tb hard drives that i can put in raid 1 and has at least one usb connection and one esata connection. I have looked on newegg and found one thing that may be of help but i'm not sure because the description is very vague and there is only one review.

2tb Drives For A Raid Array

I'm running a 5 x 750 gb array of seagates right now on a dell perc 5i, but am running out of space. I told myself that i would upgrade when 2 tb drives really started dropping in price, and at the $140 level that we're seeing with holiday sales i'm ready to bite. Hitachi - deathstar (i owned two of those, wow, what a pain), but i wouldn't hold that against the company now

So what is actually the safest bet? 5900 vs. 7200 rpm doesn't matter to me because i only need to be able to max out gb ethernet; in fact, the 5900 rpm drives running cooler would be a good thing. Many people seem to complain about a brand because of reputation, so if i could get opinions from actual owners that would be preferable. Actually, i suppose the real reason i am making this thread is to weed out opinions from what people are actually seeing.
