Linux Load Command Line Grub Boot Loader But Go No Further
Replies: 2 | Post Date: 02-02-2004, 11:00 PM | User: Corran Horn314 | Forums: hardforum.comI think my hard drive is fried. The 40gb cheapo maxtor hard drive for my linux machine refused to boot. It would load the command line grub boot loader but go no further. Usually it does the graphical version of grub. I used the maxblast cd to check it and it keeps saying that it cant read it, but it will display the information about it(size etc. ) The fact that it loads any of grub shows that it isn't totally gone, but i can't seem to get anything else from it. Any suggestions? Or should i start shopping?

Computer Freezes On Boot - Long Time To Load Windows
I was having issues with a game of mine hard locking my pc. The only way to get out of it was to hold down the power button and force the pc to power down, then boot back up. Trying to trouble shoot the game, this happened several times. Then, it started freezing on the memory test. It's not really freezing, though - if i leave it sit for a very long time ( 5 to ten minutes ), it will eventually boot into windows. Any ideas?

Smart Command Failed
When i boot my pc and before i could enter the os, i can see this;
Primary master hard disk:s. M. A. R. T.command failed
I don't know if this is the reason now when my os hangs when it loads, just a thought!

System Messages Command For Windows 98
I remember back in grade 7 i used to be in tech class, and message people on their computers through a run command telling them they had won the lottery or something, but then in grade 8 they switched to macs so i couldn't. Well now i'm in gr. 10 and i remembered about it, and i was wondering if anyone knows the run command for windows 98? Is it something like system_msg (computer number)?

Blue Vertical Line Across A Lcd
I have a buddies laptop and the screen has a vertical blue line in it that won't go away. I'm pretty sure its not software related. Its there as soon as the screen turns on . It has onboard graphics. It shares the system memory. Any idea what it might be and what i might have to replace on it? When it comes to hardware i'm somewhat weak. Any idea how i can even start to trouble shoot this? As its onboard graphics i can't even check the vid card.

Power Surge Through Phone Line
Is it possible to get a power surge through the phone line and fry the phone jack on the wall as well as the dial-up modem?
My phone jack doesn't work as well as the hardware modem. I had to replace the modem and plug it into another jack to regain dial-up internet. (Yes, i know broadband would cure this but dial-up is the only thing available to me)

What Router And Adapter For 6meg Line ?
Iam after going from 1meg to 6meg line today and the max download rate i can get is 720kbps. But i only reach 550 max. I checked on speedtest and says iam on a 4. 8meg line. Now i am unsure of these routers and modems and adapters. But i think. Just perhaps that these are at fault here. From what i know. My specs are:

Just wondering, what exactly are the advantages of the green line of wd drives?

Network Line Speed Testing
I recently had a 100 mbps connection between two locations established, but it seems slow (i.e. , A 590 mb file is taking 30+ minutes to copy, when by my calcs it should be like 47 seconds). What i am wondering is if there is any hardware i can put on a line to determine the actual line speed we are seeing? This would be of great help to me if i could just verify that the line is slow.

White Line On Laptop Lcd
My laptop lcd developed a 5 pixel high strange line across the screen less than halfway up. From top to bottom it looks as follows:
3 white pixel lines
1 normal pixel line
1 white pixel line
What makes it strange to me is that all of the white pixel lines can change, albeit very slowly. In other words, if i'm displaying a photo if i minimize it the "white lines" become darker, even to the point that when i restore the photo i can no longer see the white line at some points. I thought it would mean that there was some dead transistors but that would mean that no shading/color or change would happen right? Any bright ideas on what is happening and if there is hope at repair/solution?

Trying to uipgrade windows from 95 to 98 i reformatted my hard drive and did other things i didn't know i was doing. Result: when i turn the computer on i get nothing except a black screen with a blinking cursor line. My hard drive recognizes nothing. Is there anything i can do to save the hard drive? Anyway about a week ago, my hp pavilion n5472 laptop developed a horizontal line approx a quarter down the screen, and it just wont shift. Changes colour when i visit a website with colours, for example if the site is white, the line becomes green, if the site is black the line turns grey. Is there anything i can do to get rid of this line? When i try to 'mouse over' the line, it appears that the mouse goes under the line. If that helps to describe it :confused also is it likely that the line is an actual physical fault with the machine, or something to do with drivers and such.

The run is out to an apartment off the main house. I ran close to 200 feet of cable to the house. The cable modem kept dropping the connection. I put a booster at the start of the run, and now the connection is stable but only runs at 400kbps. I get over 5mbps in the house. Would a 200 foot run cause that much line loss and reduction of speed?

How do i crimp cat5e or cat6 with phone line connectors? Back when i got u-verse for my internet they couldn't get a clear enough signal through the coax cable so they came in through the phone line. Recently the dog ate the cable from the phone line to the modem so i bought a new phone cable for it. When i replaced it i noticed they didn't actually use phone line, they used cat5e with a phone connector (rj11 i think). I haven't been able to find any information on what order to crimp 5e or 5 with those type connections. Anyone know? Also, the phone line works, and i have the net right now, but ive capped out at 17. 1 mb/s instead of the usually 18-18. 5. Not a big drop i know but im pretty sure its just the cable.

Keyboard Randomly Shoots Cursor Back To Start Of The Line
My keyboard is like 4 years old. I wanted to clean it so i took it all apart took all the keys off and cleaned everything. I put it all back togeather and now when i type it randomly shoots the cursor back to the start of the line. Also when i start the computer up it wont start untill i press all the keys on the keyboard a few times then it boots fine. It is like some key gets stuck down. I cant figure out what key it is that would cause the cursor shoot back the start of the line. If i knew what it was try and fix it. I took it apart again and made sure everything linged up just right. Any idea what key could be causing this?

X-fi Linux Support
I have learned to my disgust that creative have no plans to release any form of linux driver until sometime next year. This leaves me in an unfortunate position as i use both linux and windows a lot. All of my sound hardware is hooked up to the x-fi which is a genuine improvement over the audigy. However, i have no sound available to me in linux leaving me in something of a pickle. Does anyone know of a way in which the x-fi could at least be goaded into working in linux?

Everyone in the know seems to be telling me to install linux os on my comp. I haven't done that because i don't know much about it. Will i have compatibility problems like with a mac?Like if i burn a cd or dvd for someone, will they have trouble reading it on their windows pc? What's the interface like, similar or totally different and foreign? And do i have to know certain computer commands or whatever, or is it just point and click like windows?
Can i install all the same programs i have used with windows? Or are there different "linux versions" of these i need to get. And what about all the video codecs and shite?! Slow Keyboard In Linux
Strange problem in my linux install on my laptop. I don't know what happened, but now to type anything i need to hold down the keys for a good second. Just typing this is taking forever. Strangely, whilst logging in (the username/password entry), the keyboard works fine. I don't know where to begin, and don't have a usb keyboard to test.
